The world of the collector is a never ending one. Being a collector myself, I understand the passion and zeal of the collector’s journey – with no end in sight, we stubbornly continue to pursue our love for collectibles although others may deem ours a lost cause. But, as any collector will tell you, each collectible that you seek out, is presented with, or chance upon brings an element of pure satisfaction and joy that you are left with no other feeling but to soldier on for the next one.

My love for camels began quite by coincidence. Little did I know that my one-off purchase of a camel-shaped transistor radio many years ago would snowball into a massive collection of the beautiful creature. Nor did I predict it would ignite some latent passion in me to become a collector, animated with the slightest broach of the subject. In retrospect, perhaps it seemed appropriate to begin a camel collection since the camel was already the chosen mascot for the Arab-Malaysian Banking Group, as the AmBank Group was formerly known.

My collection of camels is by no means a selfless journey. Throughout the years, I have had the fortuitous bit of luck in having colleagues, families and friends who have shared my passion in collecting and added to that initial camel transistor radio. My collection has amused and bemused many, ranging from the everyday stuffed camel soft toy to one as exotic as a handcrafted camel made of glass presented to me by my staff.

This book is by no means an attempt to rationalise the collection or make it into a study of science and the collector’s enthusiasm. Rather, the book has been put together as a loving dedication to those who have enjoyed and shared my passion in my camel collection, and to thank them for their many thoughtful contributions, as well as showcase the assembly of camel paraphernalia that I have amassed throughout the years. It is also a book that I hope will encourage others to understand the fun and passion this hobby brings. Mine may not be a complete journey, but the excitement and anticipation of finding that next camel – how or what that will be – will continue to drive me forward with zest.

A John Biccard charismatic skintone Camel Head in marble suspended on a steelpost embedded in a wooden stand. It has sad doe-like black eyes and wears a head gear, in lofty contemplation of The Seven Pillars of Wisdom – looking more spiritual than all the three Magi put together. The artist describes “the enigmatic smile which plays in the corner of his mouth is the smile of a camel which has passed through the eye of a needle. So serene is his composure and detachment that he is spirited off to transcendental realms denied to the likes of us – encumbered as we are by all our wordly baggage. His smile is the smile of Gnosis – of real knowledge as opposed to mere belief.” (Purchased in Sandton City, South Africa by Tan Sri Azman Hashim in 1995.)

Ships of the Desert

The camel has been known as the Ship of the Desert for its overwhelming resilience and ability to navigate arid desert environments. Well adapted for the dry landscape, camels can travel great distances without food or water for long periods of time.

Historically, camels have played an important role among the Arab societies. The camel is a symbol of wealth for the Arabs, providing them with milk, hair, leather, meat and mobility. And, in nomadic societies, a herd of camels is also a sign of the tribe’s wealth and can be often traded for food, weapons or other necessities.

There are numerous mentions of the camel in the Islamic society in the Holy Qur’an. When Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) migrated to Medina, his first task was to erect a mosque.

The Prophet relied on the Grace of Allah to guide his camel to the spot on which the Muslims’ first mosque would be built.

Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) was also mentioned in the Holy Qur’an as the Messenger sent to the people of Thamud. The symbol of his message was the she-camel which his people hamstrung rather than provide water as they had been asked. The she-camel is seen as a symbol of submission to God and a gift from Allah the Mighty Creator.

The camel today remains one of the most unique of the world’s animals. Its long, strong legs and powerful muscles allow it to carry heavy loads for long distances. It can carry as much as 150 kilogrammes in load and typically travel about 40 kilometres a day.

Well-rounded in its capabilities, the camel is seen as a symbol of resilience, strength and endurance.

Since 1982, the camel was chosen as the symbol for Arab-Malaysian Development Bank. What began as a mascot for its savings box has today become the icon of the Group. Not only has the camel become synonymous with the Group’s red and yellow corporate colours but, the mascot also embodies the Group’s continued integrity and has symbolised the Group’s position as Malaysia’s preferred banking group with regional capability and international connectivity.

This book is a collection of all manner of camels in the Group’s possession. Some have been given as well-thought gifts while others were procured by Tan Sri Azman Hashim during his many travels abroad. From stuffed cuddly toys to Swarovski-studded figurines, including a six feet high mother-son stuffed camel purchased for RM34,000, this book is an ode to one of God’s most resilient creations and a celebration of the emblem that has defined the AmBank Group throughout the years.

Since 1982, the resilient camel was chosen as the symbol for Arab-Malaysian Development Bank.

What began as a mascot for its savings box has today become the icon of the AmBank Group. Not only has the camel come to personify the Bank’s red and yellow corporate colours but

the mascot also embodies the Group’s continued integrity and recognised financial performance in the world of banking.

This book is a collection of all camels, large and small, in the Group’s possession, located in banking halls and office premises. Some have been given as well thought gifts while others were

purchased by Tan Sri Azman Hashim during his many travels abroad.

This book is a celebration of the emblem that has defined the AmBank Group throughout the years.
