Overview on Camlock Couplings and Cam lock Fittings:

Cam and groove couplings are also called cam lock fittings. These are quick connect couplings

commonly used in various industries as a hose connection to prevent leakages. The coupling is

well-known because it is an easy and inexpensive way of connection, re-connection or

disconnecting.

Cam and grove couplings can be used in a system in which filing

of chemical drums is required. These can be utilized by factories

that require paint, dye and ink medium transfers. The couplings

are generally used wherein frequent modifications of hoses are

necessary for an appropriate mix. Even cam and groove couplings

are useful for petroleum trucks.

Standards

Federal Mil A-A-59326A

The standard for camlock fittings is based on the specification of the US Military i.e. Mil-C-

27487. Mil-C-27487 assigned the methods, dimensions, inspection procedures, materials,

pressure ratings and tolerances. In 1998, the actual Mil-C-27487 specification was changed by

another Federal Military standard: A-A-59326A. The Federal Mil A-A-59326A offers complete

guarantee for the exchangeability of cam and groove couplings designed to the similar

specification.

DIN 2828

Couplings designed to DIN 2828 are exchangeable with those which designed to the actual

MIL-C-27487 standard. However, vary in terms of part number, thread and hose tail design. A

flat thread seal is added to the female threaded parts and a smooth hose shank following by

DIN 2817 is added to the RK safety clamps complying with the DIN 2817.

EN 14420-7

The European standard coupling (EN 14420-7) is official approved by CEN and useful for cam

and groove couplings designed to American “military specification” A-A-59326A / MIL-C-

27487. However, the American standard coupling does not apply to the connection side and

just to the coupling side. However, the other parts such as seals, rings, levers and bolts are not

interchangeable.

Operation to Connect:

1. In order to start, you first need to open the coupling by

pulling back its locking lever. Do this process from the top

cam handles while moving the handles away from the

coupler.

2. Now you can insert its adaptor into the cam and grove

coupler.

3. Close the coupler by turning the cam handles. Make sure

the arms are closed in the direction of the coupler and then

lock it once the handles get closed.

4. If you want more security, insert the clip from holes above

cam handles. The line pressures move the adaptor and

coupler independently and increase the pressure on the

face of coupling. During normal conditions, the safety locks

are not required but these are essential. The coupler and

the adaptor are created to enhance the fluid turbulence and

the abrasion from dry items while connected.

Operation to Disconnect:

1. Before disconnecting, ensure that the hose coupling is completely depressurized.

2. To open the coupler, pull back its locking lever over the top of cam handles while

turning handles away from the coupler.

3. Take out the adaptor from the cam lock coupler.

4. Close the coupler by lowering cam handles. Lock the coupler when it is not in use that

can protect from any accident or damage.

Temperature Range

The above mentioned working pressure refers to the ambient temperature through

elastomer seals. PTFE seals or higher temperatures will decrease the rated coupling

pressure as well. The maximum working temperature for polypropylene is 70°C / 160°F,

at which point the above mentioned temperature should be decreased by 40%. Seal,

assembly, coupling and hose methods can be selected in relation with the appropriate

temperature range and application.

Production Method

Different sizes of brass couplings are sand cast or shell-molded. The right type of aluminum is a

sand cast 713-T5 alloy, which can be anodized, if necessary. Stainless steel couplings are

investment-cast in a wide range that can be found in different sizes and electro-polished for

various applications. The standard for stainless steel quality for cam and groove couplings is

AISI 316-EN 1.4401. Polypropylene couplings are designed from the polypropylene reinforced

with 25-30 percent acid-resistant fiberglass.

Closed Seal

VLXPSG closed cam and groove seals are made for severe chemical applications. They combine

suitable properties of 2 diverse materials; the chemical resistance offered by the FEP

encapsulation and the rubber silicone core. Encapsulation of the Silicone core makes sure

better operational safety, when it is compared with an open envelope seal. In order to

produce VLXPSG seals, there is no need to use animal derived ingredients such as ADI free.

This decreases the risk of BSE prion contamination. The closed cam and groove seal resists

high temperature operation: between from -60°C / -76°F up to 204°C / 399°F.

Closed Envelope Seal

Closed envelope seal eliminates every contact between the seal core and chemicals. The fully-

closed PTFE envelope entirely encapsulates the FPM. Its maximum temperature is 200°C /

392°F.

Open Envelope Seal

Open envelope seal comprises a square-section EPDM core and a U-section PTFE envelope.

The methods of construction for an open envelope seal ensure exceptional compression

properties. PTFE envelope permits the seal to withstand the temperature up to 200°C / 382°F.

Standard Seal

Standard cam and groove seals comprise of a standard square-section that can be found in:

Thread Seal

Female threaded adaptor and coupler components complying with DIN 2828 / EN 14420-7

In Europe, BSPT and BSP threads are normally used instead of NPT treads. NPT treads are

commonly American threads. As a number of American industrial products and machines are

exported to the European markets, such couplings with NPT threads are regularly required.

The major difference among the above mentioned threads is the method of using seals.

Material Quality

The determination of materials used in cam and groove couplings is done through an in-house

spectroscope. The spectroscope examines the specific quality of coupling materials. So, we

guarantee our customers that the used materials comply with only the appropriate standard.

Adaptor & Coupler Dimensions

Dimension Gauges

The adaptor coupling’s shape allows the interchangeability of the coupler parts. There are

some specific designed gauges which can be used for measurement systems. Using test gauges

minimizes examination duration, simultaneously ensures the best interchangeability and

properly maintains seal properties while employing designed seals like envelope seals. Both

gauges are employed in different dimensions; first one is small and second one is large. In first

stage, the small gauge is passed through the top of the adaptor section. In case this cannot

pass, the top of the adaptor will fall within the permissible tolerances.

High-Technology Measuring Tools

With the help of high-technology measuring equipment, you can measure particular

dimensions of cam and groove couplings ensuring the compliance with the required

dimensions under German DIN 2828, European EN 14420-7 and Federal Mil A-A-59326A

standards. Though normal measuring systems do not give trustable dimensions, we provide

Safety Precautions for Cam-Lock Couplings:

Make sure you use the handle locking device

Low pressure connection

Pressurized media produces risky conditions. It is important to tie-off ends of the hose

to guard against any accidental separation of lines and also avoid bucking or whipping of

the hose.

The match product should be conveyed with appropriate alloy couplings.

Fluidized dry items are more abrasive than liquids. In such applications, it is necessary to

frequently check the couplings for excessive wear and these should be replaced

whenever required.

Pressure test the hose assembly before application, it ensures the leak-free and tight

assembly of clamp, coupling and hose.

Handle Strength

PFA (up to 200μ)

The best quality of a PFA (Perfluoroalkoxy) coating is its temperature resistance up to 260°C /

500°F. Anti-ad-Hesive layer makes the PFA coating suitable to pharmaceutical and food

industry applications.

PTFE (up to 40μ)

PTFE (Poly tetrafluoroethylene) coating is just 40μ thick. The PTFE-coated coupling can resist

temperatures up to 260°C / 500°F. Similar to PFA-coated couplings, PTFE couplings also have

exceptional anti-adhesive characteristics which are appropriate for applications related to

food industry.

ECTFE (up to 1000μ)

ECTFE (Ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene) coatings are made to withstand concentrated &

aggressive chemicals. Couplings with an ECTFE-coating provide outstanding fire properties,

electric isolating and resist to diverse temperatures up to 150°C / 302°F.
