Spirit of Scouting

The spirit of scouting is all in a flame, and the start of a campfire is not without aim.

From the start of a glow as a Beaver Scout joins, as they make their first Promise and pay subs with their coins.

The flickering starts as they move up to Cubs, and start to learn how to deal with life’s rubs.

And then on to Scouts - the flames dance high in the sky, as they begin to understand what little value is in the word “I”.

Through Explorers and Network the flames climbing higher, as they carry on helping keep scouting on fire.

And then “whoosh” the embers fly off high into the night, and become the next lot of leaders - to our great delight!

So as you watch the flames flicker and glow remember that’s the “Spirit of Scouting” you all help to grow"

Songs included in this booklet are those that we sing at our camp fires and have the version of the words that we use. Other versions may be available and the words from these and many other songs sung at camp fires may be found on the Internet.

We’ve put links to this songbook and sites with song lyrics on our website at www.parbrook.org.uk/ldr/resources.htm

I went to market with my Uncle Jim.Somebody threw a tomato at him,Tomatoes are usually wrapped in a skin,But this one was different, it came in a tin.

Mary the milkmaid was milking a cow,The trouble with Mary she didn't know how,Along came the farmer and gave her the sack,So she turned the cow over and poured the milk back.

I called on my girlfriend, her name was Miss Brown,She was having a bath so she couldn't come down,I said slip on something be down in a tick,She slipped on the soap and by gum she was quick

I saw an old man who was tattered and torn,Eating the grass on my front lawn.I said if you’re hungry, in a need of a snack,The grass is much longer around at the back.

I was walking in Horsham along the High Street,When I saw a young man with no shoes on his feet,It happened that money I had and to spare,So I went to a fruit shop and bought him a pear.

Gas man cometh'Twas on a Monday morning the gas man came to call.The gas tap wouldn't turn - I wasn't getting gas at all.He tore out all the skirting boards to try and find the mainAnd I had to call a carpenter to put them back again.

Oh, it all makes work for the working man to do.'Twas on a Tuesday morning the carpenter came round.He hammered and he chiselled and he said: "Look what I've found:your joists are full of dry rot, but I'll put them all to rights".Then he nailed right through a cable and out went all the lights!

Oh, it all makes work for the working man to do.'Twas on a Wednesday morning the electrician came.He called me Mr. Sanderson, which isn't quite the name.He couldn't reach the fuse box without standing on the binAnd his foot went through a window so I called the glazier in.

Oh, it all makes work for the working man to do.'Twas on a Thursday morning the glazier came roundWith his blow torch and his putty and his merry glazier's song.He put another pane in - it took no time at allBut I had to get a painter in to come and paint the wall.

Oh, it all makes work for the working man to do.'Twas on a Friday morning the painter made a start.With undercoats and overcoats he painted every part:Every nook and every cranny - but I found when he was goneHe'd painted over the gas tap and I couldn't turn it on!

Oh, it all makes work for the working man to do.On Saturday and Sunday they do no work at all;So 'twas on a Monday morning that the gasman came to call...

End with a hummed verse

Land of the Silver BirchLand of the silver birch, home of the beaver,Where still the mighty moose wanders at will;

(Chorus)Blue lake and rocky shore, I will return once more,

Boom-diddy-ai-dai, boom-diddy-ai-dai, boom-diddy-ai-dai, boom.

My heart grows sick for you here in the lowlands,I will return once more, hills of the North.

Swift as a silver fish, canoe of birch-bark,Thy mighty waterways carry me home;

Here, by the blue lake's shore, I'll place my wigwam,Close to the water's edge, silent and still;

This song is based on an aboriginal Canadian (Indian) canoeing song

Let’s get funky now(Chorus)

My name is Joe (chant, repeat after me)Hello. My name's Joe, And I work at the button factory.One day my boss came up to me and he said: ”Hello Joe are you busy, are you busy, are you busy are you Joe?”And I said “No”So he said "Press this button with your left hand."So I did.

A chant rather than a song; actions start at the end of each "verse" and carry on, adding "right hand," "left foot," "right foot," "nose," "tongue."

Last verse:Hello. My name's Joe, And I work at the button factory.One day my boss came up to me and he said: ”Hello Joe are you busy, are you busy, are you busy are you Joe?”And I said “Yes”

My ship sailed from ChinaMy ship sailed from China with a cargo of tea,All laden with presents for you and for me.They brought me a fan, Just imagine my bliss,When I found myself going like this, like this, like this...

You repeat this song and with each verse add an extra action. First you wave your right arm, then your right and left arm, then you add your right leg, then left leg and finally you nod your head.

Continue with same words for 4 nights ago, 3 nights ago etc

Scout hymnNow as I start upon my chosen way,In all I do, my thoughts, my work, my play;Grant as I Promise, Courage, Lord for meTo be the best, the Best that I can be.

Open mine eyes to see things as I should,That I may do my daily turn of goodLet me be ready, waiting for each needTo keep me clean in thought and word and deed.

So as I journey on my chosen way,In all I do, my thoughts, my work, my play,Grant as I Promise, Courage, Lord for meTo be the best, the Best that I can be.
