FFPS Philosophy and History:Fun-Fair-Positive Soccer

(FFPS) was founded in the Spring of 1986 by Jack Hendrie and several parents in Katy to estab-lish a more positive environment for youth to play soccer. FFPS developed a system where kids could play and enjoy the sport without over demanding parents taking the fun away. FFPS designed a format of 5 aside soccer for more ball conctact, an equal play and play all the positions format with a unique “Equal Substitution System” and balanced teams for more fairness, and extensive parent training to ensure that it would be always positive. The first season in 1986 in Katy saw 150 players play and in 2012 there were 2,000 players in Katy playing in FFPS. In 1995, FFPS decided to expand beyond Katy. FFPS now has 21 new programs for a total of 16,000 players, and 25,000 players are expected by 2018.

About Fun:FFPS uses a 5-a-side soccer

format (5 players per side) which allows every player to get the ball many more times which makes it more fun and the kids learn faster. Lots of action, means lots of fun and great exercise for the kids, too!

About Fairness:

FFPS welcomes everyone; all girls and boys from ages 4 to 18, FFPS includes Special Needs kids on regular teams, and FFPS provides financial scholarships to anyone who needs one. Thus, “Everyone Plays” in FFPS. FFPS has co-ed teams so girls and boys learn to play as a team together. Every player plays equal time and every position each game. FFPS uses a specially designed “Equal Substitution System” to

guarantee this. Also, FFPS has no tryouts or all-star teams and all teams are balanced to optimize a Fun, Fair, Positive soccer experience. FFPS uses a unique technology to “balance” every team, so that the teams are well-matched for action on the field and at the goal.

About Being Positive:

Both coaches are allowed on the field to use positive coaching and provide a safe environment by enforcing the rules with the proper discretion in a cooper-ative way. FFPS standards are very high for coaches as well as parents. FFPS does not allow any derogatory comments or per-sistent yelling that would belittle, distract or embarrass players. FFPS asks parents to encourage not criticize the players! Better yet, to relax, to enjoy, and to “Let the kids play!” After all it’s for their fun!! Parents are asked to use the words like, Go, Good, Great, or Nice at the beginning of a sentence or phrase and they will always be a positive parent. i.e. Good Kick! Good Dribble! Nice Shot! Go Tigers!

Community Involvement:

FFPS believes that it is important to be involved in the community. FFPS works with schools to help ‘At Risk’ kids get into our program. Through FFPS, parents become more engaged which can be key to building self-esteem in youth. FFPS works with schools to ensure fields are well-kept. FFPS provides financial scholarships to anyone in Houston and the surrounding area who needs it. Our philosophy is “Everyone Plays”.

Full Uniform and Trophy:Every player gets a top-notch

full uniform including a jersey, shorts and socks to start everyone off on the right foot (or left if you’re a lefty). At the end of the season, every player receives a really cool trophy that shows how valuable they are and serves as a reminder of their FFPS experience. Because at Fun-Fair-Positive Soccer, every player counts!

No Travel - All Games Played Locally:

Traveling for games all over town can be exhausting - that’s one reason why FFPS Saturday games are played right in the local area. FFPS has 22 locations all around Houston. And because FFPS plays at local schools or parks, you build relationships with people in your neighbor-hood. Stronger community means more friends for kids - and for parents too - a truly family activity!

Convenient Practices - Once Per Week:

FFPS knows life is busy and we aim to respect the busy schedules of families, especially those with larger families and

various commitments. That’s why teams practice only once per week. Hooray! Plus, seeing your teammates for practice during the week builds stronger relationships ON and OFF the field.

FFPS Programs:Spring 2013 Soccer Season:

FFPS has a spring season coming soon with eight games. There is one practice per week. Saturday games begin April 13 and

end June 1. All games are played locally (for a location near you go to www.FFPS.org). Every player receives a full uniform (shirt, shorts, socks) and trophy. The fee is currently $104 but goes to $109 March 19. For more information please go to www.FFPS.org “Season”, then select “Spring” or call 800-828-7529 (PLAY) or Jack at 713-907-4907.

Summer Camps with UK International:

FFPS has a summer camps at 15 locations in the Houston area all summer conducted by UK Interna-tional. UK International had 45,000 campers participate last summer in the U.S., 500 campers from FFPS . The camps are each one week long. The camps are designed to be fun with learning soccer at the same time. All the coaches are certified and all are British. Every camper receives a free soccer ball and t-shirt. The fee is currently $109 but there is a $25 discount from Feb. 15 to Feb. 28. Also, if you sign up 28 days before the camp you receive a Replica Jersey (valued at $30). For more information please go to www.FFPS.org “Season”, then select “Summer” or call 800-828-7529 (PLAY) or Jack at 713-907-4907.

We ensure maximum of fun, fairness, self-esteem building, success and a positive experience in which positive behavior and positive values can be realized for every player.

Lantern Creek Combines Arts, Outdoor Funto Develop Creativity, Confidence

Changing a tire, staging an original production of “Peter Pan” and picking organic toma-toes ay not sound like typical summer camp activities — and that’s exactly how the found-ers of Camp Lantern Creek intended it.

At Lantern Creek, a camp for girls ages 7-17 in Montgom-ery (just north of Conroe), they have thrown out the traditional rules for what summer camp “should” be and developed unexpected, wide-ranging activities with a common theme: fostering creative thinking and self-confidence in girls.

“We’re trying to nurture modern-day Renaissance girls who feel they can do anything –

or at least have the chance to try every bit of it for themselves,” says Elizabeth Gates, Lantern Creek co-founder.

With a full theater stage and art studio, Lantern Creek has a strong emphasis on the arts through classes that include drama, singing, painting and textile arts. Yet the outdoors play an important role as well, with a garden, ropes course, pool, lake and multi-story water slide. A camper might spend part of her morning making pop art, the other half in a canoe, and the afternoon in

“Rosie’s Riveters,” a class designed to teach girls how to use realworld tools.

Equally important as the diverse day-time classes are the evening programs and cabin life.

Whether it’s a costume party focused on women heroes or cabin laundry night, girls are meant to have fun (and gain a strong sense of confidence and community along the way).

“We think of Lantern Creek as place where a girl can be completely herself. She’s not afraid to sing loud or play hard or get dirty. That kind of fun fearlessness is our greatest measure of success,” says Lantern Creek co-founder Sunni Markowitz.

Camp Lantern Creek is offering two two-week and one one-week session this summer, as well as a mother-daughter weekend in April. For details, visit camplanterncreek.com.

Girl Scout Camp gives all girls the opportunity to grow and explore in safe, natural surroundings close to home

Few things are as memorable for a girl as going away to camp for the summer. While she may not remember exactly how this rite of passage made her more responsible and independent, or how it gave her an appreciation for nature, she’ll know it did. And she’ll remember sleeping under the stars, making s’mores around the fire and singing silly camp songs in the warm breeze for years to come.

The camp experience is critical to the development of the well-rounded child. Girl Scout camp offers girls an opportunity to enjoy just being girls in a safe, social setting without the distractions of

modern day life. Girls can connect with others without smart phones. They can play sports outside instead of on TV. And instead of learning life’s sometimes harsh lessons, they can

learn how to prevent them and cope − away from boys and the social pressures of school.

Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council has a summer camp program at three sites close to home− Camp Agnes Arnold and Camp Misty Meadows in Conroe and Camp Casa Mare in Seabrook. All are accredited by the American Camp Association. Here, every girl can make new friends, explore the world around

her and discover her potential. In addition, camp helps youth

reduce stress, learn new skills and engage in a more active lifestyle through hikes, exercise, swimming

and play. Our children need this now more than ever to combat rising obesity rates and diminishing opportunities for outdoor play in safe environments.

Childhood and adolescence is a time of great change, and with social and economic stressors affecting children more and more each day, there is a growing need for the camp experience and the sense of community and achievement it gives each child. Girl Scout resident camp programs offer girls that and more, year after year.

Not a Girl Scout? Not a problem! All girls are welcome. Visit www.gssjc.org/residentcamp to find out more.

The Emery/Weiner School Theater camp is open to young people entering 5th – 9th grades. Led by a professional theater staff, this two-week camp will focus on acting, singing and dance skills, and will culminate in a fully staged Broadway-style musical- complete with professional costumes, sets and lights! If you’ve been bitten by the acting bug, or just want to try something new, this camp is a great opportunity to learn – or improve – your skills on a big-time stage in our proscenium 500-seat Becker Theater. Camp students will run both end-of-camp productions from start to finish from in front of, and behind the scenes.

The Emery/Weiner School Theater Camp

EWS Theater Camp participants will put on a full-scale Broadway-style musical production at the end of the two-week camp.

It’s a Summer of Leaders

In today’s world, many consider our country to be experiencing a severe leadership crisis. Each year more schools are emphasizing the importance of leadership and technologically driven skills- particularly at a young age- when the mind is the most susceptible to learning new subjects. In the wake of booming technology and the societal trend of ecologically friendly living, what is going to prepare our young minds for the rapidly changing, ever growing need for expertise in these fields?

Young Leaders Campus (YLC) is establishing the new benchmark in childhood education. It is a revolutionary child enrichment and development facility created on the notion of transforming the educational industry by introducing today’s children to “globally-focused, technologically driven and ecologically friendly” subjects. Designed to meet the individual’s needs, Young Leaders Campus incorporates all the fundamental principles of leadership in every class, thereby promoting direction and leadership in each student. Offering classes on varying subjects from cooking and dance to science and art, YLC is certainly not lacking in originality.

There are currently two Young Leaders Campus locations in Texas, one of which recently opened its doors in Cypress, Texas in January of 2013. The location in Cypress will be very much like the Champions at Vin-

tage Park location. Zafar Amin, president and CEO of Young Leaders explains, “The Cypress facility will get the same great service and outstanding programs as Vintage Park. One way to look at it is if you go to Vintage Park, it’s like going to Disneyland and if you go to Cypress it’s like going to Disney World.” No matter the location of Young Leaders, you can expect to receive the best service and innovative programs. These locations are the first of many. Construction has already begun on a new facility in Sugarland, which will function as a full-day preschool.

Every summer parents are presented with the predicament of finding activities for their children during the long summer months. From June 10th to August 23rd, Young Leaders Campus will be a

Summer of Leaders. The facility will launch a program for children ages 4-12 years old. While most camps take place during the duration of the summer with a singular theme, the camps at YLC will last one week and contain differing and creative themes for each week. During the summer months, it is important to keep children engaged and actively learning. At Young Leaders Campus, parents can be certain that not only will their children be thoroughly entertained through-out the day, but physically and mentally stimulated as well by learning subjects related to global awareness, historical exploration and much more. A few of the themes that will be offered this summer are Culinary Arts, Dig Dinosaurs, Inventor’s Workshop,

Mummies and Mysteries, Houston’s Habitat Heroes, and many more. From dinosaurs to dance, Young Leaders Campus has something for everyone. Parents and kids alike will be delighted with the appropriate blend of fun and learning at these camps.

“The mission of Young Leaders Campus is to be one of the world’s leading producers

and providers of early childhood education and enrichment programs. Using our proprietary programs and specially designed facilities to differentiate our content services, we seek to develop the

most creative, innovate, and enriching experiences for children.”*

Young Leaders Campus is a company that is enthusiastic about and dedicated to early childhood education. Every class, camp and program at Young Leaders Campus will provide students with a well-balanced, educational and enriching experience with a unique global approach. The objective at YLC is to go above and beyond what superior childcare and enrichment programming should be. As a parent, ask yourself, where can you find a facility that is both enriching in experience and enjoyable for the kids? Look no further, for Young Leaders Campus will go above and beyond to meet every family’s wants and needs.

How will you know which camp is the best fit for your child? There are a number of factors to consider, including cost, distance, session lengths and hours, staff expertise and ratio to campers, age range, facilities and philosophy. Among the most important questions to ask, however, are whether the camp will have activities that appeal to your child, and how comfortable you both are with the camp environment. When it’s the right one, kids have a great time and come home with many happy memories. Check out our summer camp directory for a comprehensive guide to camps available here in Houston, as well as throughout Texas and the nation.
