A New Day for Catholic Education in Dorchester On December 2, a new era in Catholic education began for the students, faculty, and teachers of Saint John Paul II Catholic Academy (SJPIICA), the largest Catholic elementary school in the northeast. Following a successful $10 million fundraising effort led by co-chairs Bob Atchinson and Jack Sebastian, the newly- renovated 100-year-old Lower Mills school building of SJPIICA was blessed and re- dedicated by Cardinal Seán O’Malley in preparation for the arrival of 326 eager students in January 2016. Joining Cardinal O'Malley were Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, Campaign for Catholic Schools Chair, Jack Connors, Inner-City Scholarship Fund Chairman, Peter Lynch, Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of Boston, Kathy Mears, and more than 100 other supporters whose joyful smiles and celebratory handshakes were in full supply. The Lower Mills campus is the sixth building to be renovated by the Campaign for Catholic Schools since 2007. Significant upgrades to the building include: modernized rooms equipped with the latest in classroom technology, a state-of-the-art science lab, an early childhood wing, and an updated, handicapped-accessible entrance. Each new space in the building is named by a family who cares deeply about Catholic education and wants to see its continued success for generations of Dorchester children to come. "This was a labor of love for the volunteers who raised the $10 million for this project," said Mary Flynn Myers, Vice President of Development for the Campaign for Catholic Schools. "Bob and Mickey Atchinson, Jack Sebastian, and their great committee opened their substantial rolodexes and invited their friends and colleagues to visit the school. Thanks to them, a new and enthusiastic group of supporters has joined our ranks. Of the 143 contributors to this effort, 78% gave for the first time. We welcome them and hope they will continue to walk with us." SJPIICA Regional Director, Sr. Ellen Powers, CSJ, addressed the group with these words: “You have transformed a tired, century-old building into a stunning, bright school. Most of our students spend as many as 11 hours with us each day of the school week. Now, they will spend that time surrounded by the care and love of their teachers in beautiful rooms with new technology and furniture. Our school is now on the same level as the extraordinary students we serve. Our hearts are overcome with joy and prayers of thanksgiving for your generous commitment to making this dream a reality.” Fourth grader Devin proudly represents his classmates at the ribbon cutting for SJPIICA's Lower Mills campus (left to right): Cardinal Seán O’Malley, Mayor Marty Walsh, Bob Atchinson, Peter Lynch, Jack Connors, Kathy Mears, and Jack Sebastian. Page 2: CAMPAIGN FOR CATHOLIC SCHOOLS: WINTER 2015 A New Day … · A New Day for Catholic Education in Dorchester On December 2, a new era in Catholic education began for the students, faculty,

In October, businessman and philanthropist Don Rodman joined Jack Connors, Honor Roll Chair, Chris Boland, and others at the Boston College Club for the Campaign for Catholic Schools’ Honor Roll breakfast. Rodman, whose childhood love for cars grew into an award-winning car dealership, spoke of philanthropy and introduced his new book, Rodman's Ride and Other Stories of Giving.

Born and raised in Dorchester, Rodman recalled how small acts of kindness impacted his family and drove his decision to prioritize giving from the time he opened the Rodman Ford dealership in 1960.

Philanthropy took on a leading role when Rodman created the Rodman Ride for Kids 25 years ago, becoming a full-time volunteer 13 years ago. This year, the Ride surpassed $25 million in lifetime

fundraising with 1,200 riders supporting dozens of charities working with at-risk urban youth. Rodman acknowledged that giving back comes in many forms. At the Campaign for Catholic Schools, volunteers dedicate their talent and attention to our students. Contributors provide funding for scholarships, technology, and renovated buildings. They make sure all our students have the opportunity to succeed.

Rodman challenged the group, “Why not start today?”

Ask any South Boston resident where to find the best hot dog in town, and chances are you’ll find yourself at Sullivan’s of Castle Island.

For more than 60 years, Sullivan’s or “Sully’s” as it’s more widely known, has been a local family favorite in one of Boston’s most beloved neighborhoods. Now, in addition to serving hundreds of patrons each summer, owners Brendan and Adrienne Sullivan are

Who’s on BoardIt’s been a great year for the Honor Roll, the Campaign for Catholic Schools’ leadership annual giving society. In fiscal year 2015, we welcomed 21 new individuals, corporations, and foundations to the Honor Roll, bringing the grand total to 99 members. A special word of welcome and thanks to new executive committee members Maureen Joyce Harrity, Larry Naughton, and George Issa.

Honor Roll membership is open to those who make a gift of $2,500 or more to the Annual Fund. For more information on the Honor Roll, please contact our new director, Jillian Pereira, at 617-779-3723 or [email protected].

A Window to the FutureAt South Boston Catholic Academy (SBCA), the future is bright now that 40 new windows have been installed in the former St. Brigid Elementary School building. In recent years, an opaque film that could not be removed developed on the original classroom windows, rendering them unable to see through or open and close. Thanks to a challenge grant offered by South Boston natives Jack and Lillian Smith, the Campaign for Catholic Schools raised $125,000 to help replace the windows in time for the new school year. Thanks to all who contributed, more than 300 SBCA students are receiving an excellent education with a view to a bright future beyond the classroom.

serving the needs of five deserving students and their families who are eager to take a bite out of a quality Catholic education in their community.

Since 2009, the Sullivan Scholars program has provided scholarships each year to five South Boston residents who wish to enroll at South Boston Catholic Academy (SBCA).

“We’ve been fortunate to be part of the South Boston community for many years,” Brendan reflects. “When we received a call from the Campaign for Catholic Schools to help support some of the kids we see every summer, we knew what a wonderful opportunity we had to help support SBCA, these young students, and their families.”

Thanks, Brendan and Adrienne, and all our scholarship supporters who believe in the important difference a Catholic education makes in the life of a child.

Dear Friends,

The Bible tells us there is an appointed time for everything. This past year, it’s been a time to build.

Earlier this month, we celebrated the newly-renovated Lower Mills school building of Saint John Paul II Catholic Academy that will make dreams come true for 326 deserving students. I can’t say enough about the committee who helped to build the school, in particular, our co-chairs Bob Atchinson and Jack Sebastian and their friends who raised $10M to cover the cost of renovations. They are a gift to the students of Dorchester.

It’s also been a time to remember and celebrate the life of a good friend, the late Carolyn Lynch. Along with her husband Peter, Carolyn stepped up to make the first gift in support of the Campaign for Catholic Schools even before our organization formally existed. She saw the vision, believed in the mission, and knew what it would take to make it happen. Ever the teacher, Carolyn will continue to educate and inspire us all for generations to come.

And now, it’s time to ring in a new year. Have a very blessed Christmas, and thanks for all you do to support Catholic schools.

Jack Connors, Jr.Chair, Campaign for Catholic Schools

A growing group of enthusiastic individuals is making an impact during and after school at Saint John Paul II Catholic Academy (SJPIICA). Led by Honor Roll member Tina Grant, 30 adults are volunteering their time and talent for students in new and exciting ways across SJPIICA’s four campuses in Dorchester and Mattapan.

In addition to providing small group and one-on-one tutoring during the school day, the Volunteer Network has enriched the extra-curricular opportunities available to students through the creation of a knitting club, chess club, cooking club, manners class, and basketball team.

“The Volunteer Network promises to give more in personal satisfaction than it asks for in time,” says Tina. “The role of the volunteer is so vital, and the positive impact on our students, teachers, and families is remarkable.”

Are you interested in joining the Volunteer Network? Please contact Tina Grant at 617-265-0019 ext. 7012.

DID YOU KNOW?34% of all philanthropic giving occurs in the last three months of the year.

Please renew your gift by December 31 to help Catholic schools stay strong.

Thank you!
