CAMPAIGN REPORT SUMMER 2012/13ShS SFES k E ZEl safe.org.nz
In 2009 a campaign led by SAFE beamed images of mother pigs suffering in
sow stalls to households all over the country. Footage of pigs spending their
whole lives conned and unable even to turn around featured on national
television, shocking the nation. The subsequent outcry caused a controversy
that eighteen months later led to real change in the welfare and regard of pigs
with a phase-out of the cruel stalls (which becomes law in 2016).
SAFE has since turned the spotlight on battery and colony cages for hens
and is now launching an exciting new campaign called Stop Factory
Farming, with a broader perspective on all cruel factory farming methods.
Stop Factory Farming aims to end the cruelty of intensive farming methods in
New Zealand.
Factory Farming in Clean Green New Zealand
With agriculture being the backbone of the New Zealand economy, many of
us believe our farmed animals are well-treated and respected. Our clean,
green, 100% pure reputation depends on it. However, New Zealanders
would be shocked to know that intensive farming has become big business
here with most animalsone hundred million of themcruelly conned in
factory farms each year.
Factory farming is far removed from the traditional scene of animals outside
in pastures, free to roam. In order to maximise prot, farm animals from pigs,
chickens, turkeys to cows and ducks endure harsh and cruel lives, denied
their most basic needs. Many animals suffer anxiety, boredom, stress and
illness in factory farms. They have no sunlight, no fresh air, no room to move
and no way to express their natural behaviour for their entire life.
SAFEs new Stop Factory Farming campaign will expose cruel farming
practices, and stop them, through education and advertising in a consumer-
driven campaign asking shoppers to avoid factory-farmed products!

Consumer ActionFactory farming continues because it is hidden from public view. It is
a practice that we should all be ashamed of and SAFE believes most
New Zealanders would be horried if they saw the conditions factory-
farmed animals live in. The Stop Factory Farming Campaign aims
to open the doors on these hidden practices, and galvanise public
opinion and consumer behaviour to take action against cruel, low-
cost, mass-produced animal products.
As part of this campaign, New Zealanders
eyes are being opened by means of a
major national drive involving television
advertisements, billboards, posters and
bus adverts. Our new cage is a cage TV

SY T lY ESAs part of the Stop Factory Farming campaign many
of SAFEs efforts have been centered on stopping the
introduction of the cruel new colony cages for hens.
Successful blockade highlights plight of hensIn response to the delayed welfare code for hens, and proposal to introduce
colony cages, SAFE took part in a dramatic dawn blockade, resulting in
access to the largest battery cage facility in New Zealand being obstructed
for a day.
Eight-metre-high tripod structures, with climbers suspended, were set up
at the entrance to the Mainland Poultry complex in Waikouaiti. The activists
were from a collection of animal advocacy groups coming together as the
Coalition to End Factory Farming, with SAFE in a supporting role.
The action was carried out to highlight the continued cruelty of cages, says
Campaign director Eliot Pryor, and especially to stop the introduction of the
proposed colony cage system which Mainland Poultry is trialing.
Mainland Poultry has refused the media access to these new colony cagesand it is easy to see why, says Eliot. They do not want the public to see the
abhorrent conditions the animals are forced to live in.
The action attracted huge media interest throughout the day, and the story
was headline news for a number of news outlets, including internationally,
successfully highlighting the plight of hens.
What do egg labels really mean?SAFE often gets asked what egg labels actually mean. Is free range ok?
What about barn and organic eggs? With misleading packaging, standards
and claims adding to shopper confusion this handy chart breaks it down.

TAKE ACTION FOR NO CAGESKeep up the pressure to stop the introduction ofcolony cages!
The National Government has had the opportunity to end the cruel
connement of hens but is failing to do so. Labour has indicated
support for a ban on current battery hen cages but has not yet
established a position on colony cages.
We ask you to encourage the leader of the Opposition in Parliament to
say NO to colony cages - ask him to take a strong stance and commit
to banning all cages if Labour comes to power. In doing so, you will
also be reminding him that animal welfare is an important issue.
Send your e-card now at stopfactoryfarming.org.nz!
Tasmanian ban on battery cages welcomed
A great boost to the campaign against battery hen farming comes from
Australia where Tasmania has become the rst Australian state to commit to
a complete phase-out of battery hen cages. The Tasmanian government will
also phase out sow stalls by the middle of next year well before the pork
industrys own target of 2017. Well done, Tasmania!

ANIMAL WELFARE PROPOSALS WILL TAKE NEW ZEALAND BACKWARDS
SAFE NEWS: HELPING ANIMALS!
SAFE has joined forces with Humane Society International to launch the
New Zealand arm of the largest-ever global campaign to end animal testing
for cosmetics. The campaign, launched to coincide with World Week for
Animals in Laboratories, was rolled out simultaneously in forty-eight countries
including New Zealand, the United States, Canada, India, Australia, South
Korea, Russia and South Africa.
SAFE Campaign Manager Mandy Carter said: While SAFE understands
no New Zealand-based companies are currently conducting any product
testing on animals, New Zealand law doesnt forbid it so it could happen
if a company applied for and were given government approval. There is
absolutely no need for cosmetics to be tested on animals and we would like
to see this enshrined in New Zealand law to ensure it will never happen.
Please sign online at www.safeshopper.org.nz Kiwis will be able to support
both an international ban, and at the same time send a strong message to
the New Zealand government.
The Animal Welfare Act (AWA) 1999, the single most important piece of
legislation that affects animals in New Zealand, went under review this year
and SAFE made a substantial submission to demand signicant change
along with mobilising New Zealanders to take part and show that animal
welfare is an important concern. Thanks to everyone who got involved! The
legislation is expected to go through Parliament in early 2013 and its not toolate to take more action!
SAFE has major concerns about the draft Act put forward by The Ministry
for Primary Industries (MPI) so its important we keep up the pressure. The
Ministry appears to be merely ticking boxes and their effort at best could be
described as unambitious; at worst, harmful, says SAFE Executive Director
Hans Kriek. For example, the proposals to allow practices that breach
welfare standards to be carried out indenitely, and for economic factors
to be given primary consideration, will lead to the continuation of all kinds of
cruel factory farming practices.
Public concern for animal welfare continues to grow, as Kiwis have no
tolerance for animal cruelty. We must make sure New Zealand does not miss
the boat again, says Mr Kriek.
SAFEs submissionAfter twelve years the Act can be seen
as an abject failure. In the revised AWA
SAFE wants to see:
the establishment of an independent
Commission for Animals;
an end to the legal loopholes that allow factory farming practices
(such as farrowing crates for pigs);
breaches of welfare codes becoming offences.
Lets make it happen
While public submissions have closed, SAFE remains determined to
ensure MPs support SAFEs proposed changes to animal welfare law.
Your local MP will vote for or against the legislation, a vote that could
make a big difference for the animals! Have your say by sending a
message to your MP and vote for a nation that is truly a world leader in
animal welfare!

I have worked with SAFE on a number of occasions. They are a highly
effective force for badly needed change in how humans treat animals
in New Zealand and abroad. I especially commend SAFEs excellent
education workbooks for school teachers and students, which offer along-awaited refreshing, progressive perspective.

JUMPS RACINGNO FUN FOR THE HORSESFor the 2012 New Zealand jumps racing season SAFE initiated a new
campaign to bring attention to the forgotten casualties of jumps racing.
Although jumps racing may have a glamorous and fun image, behind
the scenes horses are suffering.
Jumps racing is a sport that is cruel and dangerous, and every year
horses routinely die on New Zealand tracks. Jumps racing has a much
higher rate of death and injury than at racing, because horses are
pushed to jump at speed.
September proved to be the worst month for jumps racing casualties
in New Zealand, with three horses killed, bringing to six the total
number of deaths in the season.
The death rate in jumps racing is unacceptable and SAFE is calling for
the sport to be immediately suspended.
Go Veg is SAFEs new initiative,
encouraging and empowering people to
adopt a positive lifestyle for animals, the
environment and ourselves!
GO VEGAND EAT LIKE A GENIUS
Classic Lasagne, recipe available at goveg.org.nz
GO VEG, the campaign that has everybody eating like
a genius, ofcially kicked off on November 1st and
already people are signing up for a 30-day trial of the
inspiring lifestyle.
Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, Gandhi. Abraham Lincoln and Vincent
Van Gogh all chose to live as vegetarians and now its a lifestyle choice on
the rise for its benets to the lives of animals, for ones own health and for the
protection of the environment.
Joining the list internationally are Bill Clinton, Stella Mc Cartney, Anne
Hathaway, Mike Tyson, Ellen De Generes and Samuel L Jackson. Locally,
Gin Wigmore, Tamati Coffey, Denise LEstrange-Corbet, Anna Paquin and
Samantha Hayes join artists, musicians, actors, presenters and sportspeople
who are all making the switch. And some of these high prolers have even
got on board to help Go Veg reach out and inuence others.
As World brand founder Denise LEstrange-Corbet says, There are no
challenges to going veg, only huge benets for your health and wellbeing.
The website Goveg.org.nz is dedicated to inspiring and assisting New
Zealanders with the changes to the new way of life. Its crammed full with
tips, advice, recipes, guidance and inspiration. Theres also a 30-day meal
planner that guides you meal by meal with recipes and ideas.
A cross-section of vegans and vegetarians share their experiences and
insights into being veg on the homepage of the Go Veg website. Some are
life long vegetarians whilst others made the change fairly recently.
The design and the feel of the campaign are friendly and informative. We
have aimed to make going veg easy, accessible and fun, says Promotions
manager Amanda Sorrenson. Some cool and impressive veg people have
got on board to help promote Go Veg. They depict how, they have an Edge
by being Veg
And for those considering taking the Go Veg challenge themselves, actor and
vegetarian Michelle Langstone has the nal word: I say, go for it!

GREYHOUND RACINGDYING TO ENTERTAIN YOU
Viewers of a 60 Minutes investigation in October were shocked to discoverthe truth about greyhound racing an animals-as-entertainment business,
driven by a gambling industry in which dogs are used up and discarded when
they are no longer protable. 60 Minutes discovered dogs were euthanised
if injured or no longer wanted and that hundreds are killed every year in New
Zealand as a result. Find out more at safe.org.nz

A BAN ON THE OUTDATED CRUEL
SPORT OF RODEO YOU CAN HELP!
Based upon my extensive experience with large animals, I have come to
the conclusion that rodeo events are inherently inhumane. It is impossible
to create a humane rodeo.
Peggy Larson, former rodeo rider, farmer and veterinarian.
The government is taking public submissions on the draft Code of Welfare
for Rodeos until the end of November. This is the document which governs
animal welfare standards for animals used in rodeo. SAFE is rejecting
the draft code and calling for a total ban as no welfare code can alter the
inherently cruel and exploitative nature of rodeo events.
SAFE and the SPCA, New Zealands two largest animal welfare agencies,
plus respected animal advocacy organisations worldwide, oppose the use of
animals in rodeos on animal welfare grounds. This disturbing and outdated
form of entertainment subjects animals to fear, stress, risk of injury and
death. It must end.

KIDS PLAY WITH ANIMAL EMPATHY
Each year SAFE hosts an event called Why
Animals Matter in the annual Christchurch
City Council winter holiday Kidsfest
programme . What better way to get
children to empathise than to put them,
metaphorically, into the shoes of the animals themselves with a role play
and dress-up? At the end of the exercise each group reports back on
what life for these animals would be like and how we could help them.
This year some very serious and passionate animal advocates were
demanding freedom for the animals!
Why Animals Matter? At the annual Kidsfest event in Christchurch this year children empathised
with pigs, chickens, circus and laboratory animals.
