Monsters Inc at CBS

Spot the monsters - with thanks to Room 1 and an interloper.

Thanks to the transforming nature of

professional make up artist

extraordinaire, (Leisa), Mike from

Monsters Inc made an appearance at

school on Friday. This was thanks to

the generosity of our community

raising over $20,000 by way of the

Mathathon earlier in the term. A great

day with plenty of laughter and,

hopefully, not too many frights.

Not Self But Service - Operation Christmas Child

The next opportunity for students to help others in need is called

Operation Christmas Child. This is run by an organisation called Samaritans

Purse. You can find more information at their website:

https://www.samaritanspurse.org.au/operation-christmas-child/.

The idea is that we fill a box (about a shoe box size) with gifts that a less

fortunate child will enjoy for Christmas. Each class will link their boxes to a

specific age group and will set about filling the box with small gifts (new). Gifts

can include - clothing, soft toys, bangles, handbags, necklaces, something for

school - pencils, pens, erasers; toys - skipping ropes, yo-yo, finger puppets;

something for hygiene - soap, face wash, toothbrush, moisturizer, hair clips

etc. Please note that the following items cannot be included - things that melt or

may leak, food of any kind, used or damaged items, anything breakable, toy

weapons, toy money or anything related to gambling.

Each class will do one box for a boy and one for a girl. If you are unable to

donate items then perhaps you can donate a few coins to help pay for the

postage of the boxes (each box costs $9 to cover postage).

We are hoping to do at least 150 boxes. There are some spare boxes available

if your family would like to complete one themselves.

Thank you for your on-going support in helping others in times of need.

Any questions please contact Julie Bose ([email protected])

Not Self But Service - Canteen

Members of the CBS Student Council are helping to raise money for Canteen

this term and we need your help! Canteen is a charity who help to ensure that

no young person aged 12-24 goes through cancer alone, be it patients, their

siblings or other family members.

We will have mascots and ‘bandanna-sellers’ coming around the classes

throughout weeks 9 and 10 to sell awesome bandannas for $4 each. We will

also be having a gold-coin-donation mufti day on the last day of term, Friday 25

September. Be sure to also wear your bandanna on the mufti day, if you have

bought one during weeks 9 and 10! All funds raised will go direct to Canteen

and the great work that they do to ensure that cancer patients and families are

never alone, so please help us to help them!

Thank you so much from the Student Council, Miss Swan and Mrs Richardson

2016

Planning is well underway for the

2016 school year. Currently we

are seeking feedback from

parents to help us

make placements for children

who are already at school. To

assist us to accurately

understand our staffing needs for

next year it would be very helpful

if parents with children starting

school in 2016 completed the

enrolment process now.

While we have estimates of the

number of new entrants starting

school in 2016, having actual

confirmed enrolments provides

us with much more confidence

when it comes to planning.

Enrolment packs are available

from the school office. They can

also be posted to you if you

contact:

[email protected]

Thank you for your help.

MINIBALL

We may be able to enter a fourth miniball team into the Junior Breakers team for Term 4. If your Year 1 or 2 child is

interested in playing miniball in Term 4 please contact the Sports Coordinator. This league is about giving kids the

opportunity to get as much ‘hands on’ time as possible so they play 4v4. Games are in 45 minute slots which includes a

warm up that encourages the kids to work on fundamental skills, along with some basic rules of their league. Games are

then played as two 15 minute halves. Games are played on Monday afternoons at the Breakers training venue off

Constellation Drive.

CROSS COUNTRY

Last Tuesday our inter-school cross country team headed to Sunnynook Park to compete against four other schools in

our annual cluster event. Each school entered 24 competitors with 6 in each race. Several of our Year 5 girl runners were

upset to miss the race after falling ill the day before. However a last minute hunt for some courageous and willing

reserves meant we were able to attend with a complete team. After a few anxieties at the start line everyone ran their very

best especially:

Luke Old - 1st Year 6 Boys

Cam Maunder - 2nd Year 5 Boys

Lucy Leith - 3rd Year 6 Girls

An outstanding performance by these runners! The placings of all runners contributed to an overall score for each school.

This year the trophy was won by Mairangi Bay and Campbells Bay were placed second. Thank you to everyone who

cheered on our team and for those parents who helped prepare the children at our practice session. Lastly thank you to

the team reserves who remained on stand-by in case they were needed.

The Year 3 CBS Firebirds came 2nd in grade C this season at Kidzplay.

Next FOCB meeting is Thursday 17 September at 7.30pm in the staffroom.

On the agenda will be a discussion about an end of year carnival/family

evening- possibly linked to the end of year concerts. If you have an opinion on

this and or are able to help organise it, please come along to the meeting.

These events require a substantial amount of organisation, but are well worth it

as the children and community enjoy them very much. It requires a group of

people to make this happen - not just one or two.

Look forward to seeing you there!

This is advance notice on a Ladies’ Movie Night.

The Dressmaker, starring Kate Winslet - a story of

love, revenge and haute couture. Mark your

calendars now and gather your girlfriends:

22 October 8.00pm, Hoyts in Takapuna.

Set in the fictional country town of Dungatar,

Australia, it is the story of Paris couturier Tilly

Dunnage, who returns home to visit her mad old

mother and the town that expelled her as a child.

She ends up staying, creating fabulous frocks for

the ladies of Dungatar and skillfully disguising their

‘flaws’ – in Rosalie’s words: “ship-sized hips, ski-run

shoulders, watermelon bosoms, (and) mantle piece bottoms”. However, in the

process, the characters reveal their true flaws of jealousy, envy, pride,

pretentious ambition and rivalry allowing Tilly to exact her sweet revenge in a

thrilling climatic ending.

CBS a Winner

Hi! I’m Jaelynn and I won our school $5000 worth of technology by making a

video about my most memorable moment with my teacher. When I found out

that I had won the $5000 worth of technology I felt really happy and proud of

myself, because I knew that the devices would help my classmates. Sometimes

there aren’t enough devices for everyone and then people can’t use them for

their learning, but now there will be enough devices for everyone! I am so

happy! I want to thank all the people who voted for me and I want to thank my

mum and dad, because my mum and dad used social media to tell people

about my video. This actually links to our inquiry- we have been learning how to

use technology to connect with others in a positive way. My video helped

people connect in a positive way. Mrs Lanning met with Mary from Cyclone

Computers in week 8 to talk about the $5000 we have to spend. We ended up

spending the money on 12 HP chrome books. We can’t wait to use our new

devices to connect and learn. Thank you SO MUCH to the University of

Auckland and their #MyTeacherMoment campaign for running such an inspiring

competition with such an amazing prize that will enrich our learning!

Jaelynn Kim, Year 5, Mrs Richardson’s class.
