Visiting the School

To ensure the safety of all our students it is very important that we know who is on the school site at all times. Of course, immediately before and after school we have many parents and caregivers visiting the school and this is expected. We also have occasions when parents/caregivers are invited to attend an event, such as cross country. However, outside these ‘drop off’ and ‘pick up’ times and ‘special occasion times’ it is very important that all parents/caregivers who come to the school ‘sign in’ at the office before going anywhere else on the school site. The signing in involves wearing a visitor tag on a lanyard. This then helps teachers to ascertain the visitor has recorded their presence at the office. This does not apply to parents/caregivers who are helping in the class alongside the teacher.

As a school we welcome parent/caregiver involvement and this, clearly, means we will have numerous visitors at school at any given time. With your help we will always know who is on the school site. This is also useful should an emergency evacuation be needed as we must know how many people need to be accounted for. Thank you for your understanding and co-operation.

Hats Hats must be worn when students are outside. CBS hats are available to purchase from the uniform shop, NZ Uniforms 19F Apollo Drive Albany at the cost of $15.

Welcome to our new teachers at CBS

1974

This was the year Richard Nixon resigned as US President. It was the year of the Commonwealth Games in Christchurch. 1974 was also the year John McGowan started his teaching career in a junior classroom in a coastal settlement north of Wellington. From next week onwards there will be a short article in each newsletter containing my thoughts in terms of teaching and school in 1974 compared with 2015. You will be relieved to learn that reading the articles will not be compulsory!

“Not Self, but Service”

Before School All children need to stay around the yellow bike shed area if they arrive at school before 8.30am. No children are permitted to play on any playground before school. Before 8.30am the school is not able to take responsibility for the safety of children. When the bell goes at 8.30am, the children can then go to their classrooms and put their bags away. Please make sure that your children are aware of the regulations before 8.30am. Many thanks for your co-operation.

Safer Internet Day February 10 is Safer Internet Day for 2015 and this year the message is

"Let's create a better internet together"

Please visit the Digital Citizenship page on the school website to find a homework activi-ty to be done during the week Feb 9-13. Par-ents can comment on the Safer Internet day post on our Campbells Bay School Facebook page, add some of your families pledges, you'll see the logo, go there and comment, join us to help make the internet a safer place. Talk about Facebook and Social Media with your family at the same time, why adults need to comment not children. There are some good guides for parents about Social Media on the Digital Citizenship page as well. Check out the OWLS link about safety and privacy as well. ● Parents and carers can help to create a better internet by maintaining an open dialogue with their children about their online lives, supporting them with their online activity, and seeking out positive opportunities to engage with their children online.

While You Were Away! There was plenty of activity at school during the holidays. The major classroom building programme is progressing almost according to the schedule. There was a short delay because of the late delivery of some structural steel/concrete but this is not a major. The second level is about to be constructed and it won't be long before the weatherboard will be fixed in place. The RTLB office (a converted classroom) was demolished in the holidays to allow for the construction of the pathway from the courts to the lower level. RTLB staff are now working from commercial offices in Rosedale Road. The hand over of the new building to the school is expected to take place in mid April. The library remodeling work started in the holidays and will probably take most of this term. The transformation of this space is awaited with anticipated. In the meantime, sadly, we are without a library so books will need to be accessed from the City Library. Not surprisingly, the swimming pool has been well used during the holidays. Aside from a problem in late December when a heating malfunction saw the water temperature soar, things have been running smoothly. Keeping the school site over the holidays is always a challenge. Thanks to Liam, our part time assistant to Geoff, for working throughout the holidays when most people are at the beach!

Park safely and keep our kids safe This term our school is participating in Auckland Transport’s ‘Safety at the School Gate’ programme. Drivers who stop in the wrong place to drop off passengers put the safety of children at risk. Parking officers will be on patrol outside the school this term and will be issuing tickets to drivers who park illegally. The agreed approach is ‘zero tolerance’ – There will be no warnings issued, you will receive a ticket if you are double parked, parked on yellow lines, or over someone’s driveway – or for any other vehicle safety offence. Please park legally to keep our children safe and to avoid being ticketed.

Smoke Free

In accordance with the Smoke Free Environments Act, the school is required to be 100% smoke free both indoors and outdoors. Please do not smoke on the school property (including in the grounds).

Electronic Registers at CBS CBS uses an electronic roll that has approval from the Ministry of Education. The roll will be taken twice daily: 8.55am and 1.25pm. It is important, therefore, for you to ensure that your child is at school promptly by 8.55am. Many important notices are also shared at this time. Attendance codes are recorded for any lateness or absences.

Please send a note to the classroom teacher for any absences or lateness, as these are a legal requirement for schools to obtain. The safety check number is 410 9551 or email [email protected] These messages will be checked every morning from 9.00am, so please leave all messages on this number if your child is going to be absent or late.

Sport - Term 1, 2015 Welcome to those who are new and welcome back to those who are not! With our start date for school being in February this year there is very little lead time to get sports up an running. If you have a child that wants to be involved with school sport this term please pay attention! Deadlines for entries are looming already - this week and next. By the deadline you must have been to the online payment system (https://shop.tgcl.co.nz), paid for your chosen sport and answered any questions that pop up as this will now also serve as your child's registration and this is the only way the school will know your child wants to play. Please do not miss the deadline as the online system will close down your ability to register once the date is reached. We would love to see lots of children get involved, but please make sure you register in time to do so. First up are flippaball (junior water polo) and miniball (junior basketball). For information on these sports (and others) please look at the sports pages on our school google site (https://sites.google.com/a/cbsprimary.org/campbellsbayschool/) Below are the deadlines for these sports. Flippaball Years 3 - 6 Monday 9 February Miniball/Basketball Years 1 and 2 - Thursday 5 February Years 3 and 4 - Tuesday 10 February Years 5 and 6 - Thursday 12 February Please note that the annual swimming competition is taking place in Term 3 this year rather than Term 1 as it will be held in the new pool at the Millennium. Look out for information about cricket next week. The sports pages will be kept up-to-date and sports events are on the school calendar if known. Also check out the Campbells Bay School Sports Facebook page and "like" it to receive information, reminders and photos. Resources Please can you check your cupboards, cars, garages, etc for any school sports resources you may have at home. We are particularly short on touch Player of the Day trophies, touch bags, flippaballs and flippaball coaching manuals and skills cards. Any sports gear can be returned to the school office or my office (opposite Room 10). Coaching If you have a particular interest in a sport and you would be keen to help with coaching please send me an email. It is good to know who is out there! We are looking forward to a great year of sport at CBS! Liz Brotherton (Sports Co-ordinator)
