A cake is a result of many
processes and events. A
usual cake is made
special simply by adding
different colours and
flavours of decorations.
Likewise, a regular
academic year in
Kumarans is made
memorable by the
inclusion of various events.
Here is a glimpse of how
Kumarans turns a routine
year into an amazing
treat for its students.

the Principal, has declared the 1st of October as Seva Day in the school.
On this day, the student council serves the helping staff during breakfast and lunch hours.

shoulders. This initiative has been taken up by Kumarans with an aim of instilling an essential
value of “giving back to the society” in their students.
SPORTS DAY 26th October 2018
ASHOKA CHANGEMAKER
The Change maker Schools Network is a global community of leading elementary,
middle and high schools that prioritize empathy, teamwork, leadership, problem-solving
and change making as student outcomes. These schools are leading a transformation in
education that supports children as change makers – individuals with the skill set and
connection to purpose that enable them to generate ideas and take initiative to
effectively solve problems and drive positive change.
Kumarans was awarded the prestigious title before, and this year there was a review. The
learning ambience and lessons, were observed extensively by a team of select
students, parents, alumni and teachers. Their observations and evidences were shared
with the Ashoka ChangeMaker team and the school has received a commendable
feedback with positive results.
The sportive spirit of Kumarans was proven yet again at the Annual Athletic Meet for
the academic year 2018-19. The beautiful march-past was not just energetic but also,
was disciplined. After the march-past, our Principal – Deepa Ma’am also provided
her invaluable feedback. She said that the girls had marched better than the boys
and that this difference had been consistent throughout the various Athletic Meets
conducted in Kumarans. She called it a symbol ‘Girl Power’.
The march-past was followed by the Inter Kumarans relay and various other sports
events. This was followed by the Sports Report. Then, the students who had achieved
excellence in their respective sports were honoured. The Emerald house won the
House Cup for the year 2018-19.
KUMARANS MODEL UNITED NATIONS By Hari Shankaran of class 9
SCHOOL DAY School day at Kumarans is an event that is anticipated by the students and teachers
alike throughout the year. It is an event that is celebrated once in two years which brings
the entire school together. The school day of 2018-19 was an event that was extensively
enjoyed by students, the teachers and the parents. The show was a cultural bonanza of
diverse acts which was a treat to the eyes.
School Day started off with a divine orchestra which was a combination of both classical
and western music. It was followed by a satire in the form of a play highlighting the political
and social atmosphere of the present day state-of-affairs by the senior secondary students
titled “Ek Nazar Idhar Bhi”. Subsequently, one could see a series of acts showing the
passage of time and the evolution of man. Presented by the students of high school and
senior secondary, it included many diverse acts in more than just 2 languages and pieces of
different dance forms. it gave a message of the whole world united that is Vasudeva
Kutumbakam. As a whole, the annual day was an enthralling experience which left the
audience spellbound.
It’s not every day that you find a high school student clad in formal attire, but you could
have seen over 500 of these kids at the Kumarans Model United Nations conference, the
largest of its kind in Bangalore. The Kumarans Model United Nations (or KMUN for short) took
place from the 5th of July to the 7th.
It saw a diverse pool of students representing countries in various United Nations committees,
such as the United Nations Security Council or even fictional “committees” such as the
Illuminati, to discuss various issues ranging from political sovereignty over the Arctic to
humanitarian issues raging across the world. These students took on the roles of world leaders
and influential people to each give their say to push their own political agenda. Such an
event helps students develop a sense of responsibility towards working for the better good, at
a global level.
CAREERS DAY
An event like this is vital for students and their parents. It gives exposure to the various
paths the students can choose not only in college but after as well. A path which is
enjoyable and one in which they can sharpen their skills. Many students were very
fascinated by the things they heard. They felt they now could really find a career that
satisfies their skill sets and adrenaline.
LIT-FEST 2018-19
Lit-fest is one of the most exciting and enjoyable events at Kumarans. Not only does it
showcase the students’ talent, but it also gives the students an opportunity to relax. In
every lit-fest one gets to watch various events such as dance, rangoli, music, dramas,
fashion show, Best out of Waste. A fun addition to this year’s lit-fest was that of hairstyling.
There were numerous enthusiastic participants and spectators.
Careers Day is an event where the students are provided with a platform to interact with
highly accomplished, experienced professionals from some selected professions. Careers
Day is hosted for students in order to select a field that they will enjoy working in.
This Careers Day gave great insights into many career options like psychology, pure
science, commerce, data analytics, health science, architecture and design, data
analytics, sports physiotherapy, law, biotechnology, pilot, media and communication. An
experienced professional from each of these gave a speech about their work and also
answered various questions. They also clarified questions about the colleges they had to
attend and the courses they had to take. A few also stated the difficulty they had
convincing their friends and family and how they trudged on with the immense passion to
become who they were. They also explained the experiences they have read using their
work.
D TALK By Taanika Shankar of class 12
Dear Editor,
As a participant of this after-school enrichment activity, my confidence to speak in front
of an audience has gone from 1 to 9.5, on a 10-point scale; I have learnt so much about
myself through the sessions, met so many great people and more than anything, I have
slowly overcome my discomfort at public speaking.
QUIZ CLUB By Mahati and Yuti of class 8
Dear Editor,
Quizzing is, to unlock knowledge at the speed of thought. Quiz club is an educative
initiative taken up by the ‘Walnut Knowledge Solutions’ which is a part of our co-
curricular activities. The Quiz masters make the sessions fun and interactive by putting
forward a set of challenging questions. They teach us the elements of quizzing, to think
independently and form our own opinions.
They divide us into groups and each group presents a quiz. This inculcates self-
confidence and effective communication skills. The research we do for the
presentations makes us more aware about the world around us. A healthy
competition takes place between the teams due to the scores kept. This also
ensures equal participation. In short, Quiz club ensures the holistic development of
an individual.
Friday is a day we all look forward to because it signifies the beginning of the weekend;
but for around 30 Kumaranites from class 8 to 12, Fridays come with the excitement and
joy of overcoming their public speaking fears or honing their speaking skills in fun-filled
sessions of D-TALK, hosted by Toastmaster’s Deepak Justin (DJ).
Right from impromptu speaking to learning how to structure a speech well with fitting
gestures and voice modulations, to writing speeches ever alternate week, D-TALK has
been extremely insightful. On a different note, just listening to DJ speak makes the one-
and-a-half-hour session seem like about 20 minutes, from his amazing speeches to way
he sceptically exclaims, “hello!” every time he retells one of his crazy experiences!

taken to spread financial knowledge among students. Top 3 students from each zone
and Top 5 schools from each zone are invited to attend a 3-day camp/second round of
the competition at the NISM Campus. I had the opportunity to attend the camp this year.
The value of saving takes anyone and
everyone a very long way. Invest wisely and
widely (never put your eggs in the same
basket). Budgeting is an essential process.
These were some of the key takeaways from
the camp. On the last day, there was a grand

career in finance or not, you should always
know your basics. It was no doubt an enriching
experience that I shall cherish always.

IDC 50 Solve Session
Vivek Rao of class 10
Design innovation boot camp on industrial and product design by idc-50, a collective of
industrial design centre, IIT-Bombay.
This was a design workshop conducted by graduates and professors of the IIT design
sector. The session was split into three parts:
A) Introduction to design thinking and our projects.
B) Designing our products.
C) The build session.
In the first session, the mentors spoke about their experience and the basics of design.
We were asked to present our projects. There were about 7 teams with their own
individual backgrounds and solutions.
In the second session, a mentor was assigned to each group. With their guidance, we
honed in our projects. We were put in groups with children from different schools and
were asked to sketch out our project and isolate our consumers and try to develop it as
exclusively as possible for them.
In the third session, we implemented our work and built a working prototype
with the learning and feedback got from the previous session.
All the mentors were very approachable and open minded to all our
unconventional methods.
Looking at the other project was an eye opening experience as it was
great to see so much talent in one place. It was very interesting to work
with these people. The different ways in which each person from a different
background attacks a problem was very interesting to see and learn
about.
This contest is conducted by TCS for children to develop an understanding of the 21st
Century Skills for futuristic learning. There were multiple rounds culminating in the grand
finale at Mumbai.
Nischal Kashyap of class X and Satish Krishna of class IX were the winner and runner up

ECO TRAIL Sri Kumaran Children’s Home – CBSE
2018-19
NATURE WALK By Tanvi Bhattacharya
Dear Editor,
We carried out a couple of nature walks in the month of August, 2018. These walks were
conducted to show us students the importance of our surroundings. During these walks,
we saw various birds, animals and insects ranging from the tiniest of caterpillars to one of
the rarest spiders, the jewel spider. We also learnt how each organism plays an important
role in the ecosystem. Our teacher , Madhusudhan Sir showed us how each flower has a
certain body structure to attract and help its pollinators and dispersers. Through these
walks, we understood that the school, which we all consider as our home is home to
many others too.

THE BE-2AWARE CLUB By Deeksha of 7B
Dear Editor,
Without this club, we, the students of seventh grade would not be able to experience the
joy of interacting with nature and our creativity would not be put to much use. Personally,
I feel that this club gives us a break from our monotonous routine and also a peace of
mind through simple yet fun-filled activities.
The Be -2Aware club is an initiative by our school which aims to help us students interact
with all forms of nature and learn from it. It introduces us to cultures and practices
followed by people all over the world, thereby increasing our general knowledge. It
also increases our creativity through hands-on projects.
The students who are a part of this club meet once in two weeks for two hours. During
this time, they discuss about any one topic related to their surroundings. The
proceedings of the club and the learning taken from the discussion are noted down by
the students in a journal. At times, the students are also taken outdoors to interact with
nature.

Children of Class 5 were taken to PRANI - a pet sanctuary at Sompura, Uttarahalli Road.
They had a fascinating experience of interacting closely with animals. They were excited
to hold hamsters, guinea pigs and learn more about animals. The animals in the
sanctuary had adorable names. Children had a memorable time visiting the farm.
Camp Kudremukha is located on the bank of river Bhadra situated near Sanjeva

REAP BENEFIT
Reap Benefit is an organization that encourages students to take up problems that
are witnessed by people on a daily basis or even in the long run. It helps them
develop projects that are an attempt at solving these issues. Many Kumaranites
(including alumni) are part of this organisation. This year the organisation conducted
as many as nine sessions for the participants. Reap benefit encourages their young
‘solve ninjas’ to look around and spot problems and find solutions.
