first-team all-conference softball team selection in both 2008 and 2009.
Nappi was a two-time YSCC Player of the Year in 2008 and 2009 .
They were inducted during a banquet on Nov. 1.
Norman recognized for leadershipKudos to Communications & New Media Chairman Corey Norman.
The Association of Computer Technology Educators of Maine named him runner-up for Educator of the Year for his leadership in implementing technology to improve education.
Corey was recognized in October at ACTEM’s conference in Augusta. He’ll be recognized a second time at Educate Maine’s education leadership awards conference in Portland on Dec. 5.
Spring Point Children’s Center earns accreditationCongratulations to SMCC’s Spring Point Children’s Center, which has earned a new five-year accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
The accreditation is widely recognized as a sign of high-quality early childhood education.

Campus Connectionscompetition in October, they won two rounds at a debate tournament at Harvard where more than 80 college teams competed.
The Multicultural Club meets from 12:15-1:15 p.m. on Tuesdays in room 104 in the Athletic Center. Anybody with an interest in different identities and cultures is invited.
Tuna tournament funds help SMCCThe Sturdivant Island Tuna Tournament donated a total of $42,500 to SMCC and Maine’s six other community colleges at a McKernan Center reception in October.
SITT raises money each year through its annual tuna-fi shing tournament in Casco Bay. Through the years, SITT has donated more than $170,000 to SMCC, of which more than $160,000 is in the SITT/SMCC scholarship fund.
Students vote in support of carbon referendum
SMCC students voted in early November in support of a student-initiated college referendum asking if the Maine Community College System should divest its investments in oil and coal companies and other businesses connected to fossil fuels.
Hundreds of students voted online, in voting booths on the South Portland Campus and at the Midcoast Campus. Preliminary tabulations showed that about 85 percent of students voted in favor of the referendum, with 15 percent opposed.
The nonbinding question asked: Should the Maine Com-munity College System sell all fossil fuel investments and prohibit any future investments in the industry most responsible for climate change?

Hugues Ingabire is a native of Burundi who moved to Maine in 2013 and is seeking political asylum in the U.S.
Hugues came to SMCC this summer through the MySuccess scholarship program and is studying Liberal Studies with a science concentration. After SMCC he is determined to eventually go on to medical school.

Sodexo raised more than $300 for the Captain’s Cupboard and Preble Street Resource Center during its pie-in-the-face fundraiser. KeyBank donates $500K for student success
SMCC’s student success initiatives have received a huge boost from KeyBank, which donated $500,000 toward a new student success program called Path to Graduation.
The KeyBank of Maine Foundation announced last month that it had awarded a three-year grant to provide support, structure and incentives for students through Path to Graduation.
The program provides students with scholarship funds and dedicated success coaches who work with them on college skills, fi nancial literacy, education and career planning, and academic and personal achievement.
About 90 students are taking part in the program during the 2014-15 academic year. The number will grow to 150 students a year in future years.
SMCC receives $231K NASA grant
SMCC has received $231,000 in funding from NASA to heighten student interest in pursuing careers in aerospace science and technology or transferring to four-year institutions to continue studies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

month that NASA had awarded it a two-year $495,000 grant from which SMCC would receive $231,000. York County Community College will receive the remaining money.
The money will be used for scholarships, a scholars program, research internships, faculty development and infusion of NASA content into college courses.
At the Oct. 16 Transfer Fair, representatives from more than 25 four-year colleges and universities talked to hundreds of SMCC students interested in transferring after they earn their SMCC degree.
SMCC unveils upgraded machining laboratoryMore than 75 people turned out for a ribbon-cut-ting ceremony and open house for SMCC’s upgraded Integrated Manu-facturing Technol-ogy lab.
SMCC has pro-cured more than two dozen new high-speed, high-precision machine tools for its lab at a cost of about $1 million. The money was a portion of a $15.5 million bond issue that Maine voters approved last November to upgrade buildings, classrooms and laboratories at the state’s community colleges.
SMCC held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and gave tours on Oct. 3, which was national Manufacturing Day.

Justin served in the Marine Corps and then worked as a painting contractor before coming to SMCC to study Communications & New Media.
After graduating in 2013, he started his own business, waveswarm, working as a sound recordist. He records audio for everything from feature fi lms and documentaries to TV commercials and web content.
He has worked on “Nature Island Challenge” for ABC and for “Vacation Homes for Free” for HGTV. He recently recorded audio for “The Strange Eyes of Dr. Myes,” a sci-fi musical feature fi lm due out next year.
“I’ve always been into recording sound. I didn’t have this in mind when I started school, but I fell into it and I love it, so that’s where I ended up.”

Sukkah erected for Jewish holidaysA colorful temporary shelter known as a sukkah was erected next to the Captain’s House for the Jewish festival of Sukkoth in October.
Sukkoth celebrates the fall harvest and commemorates the temporary shelters used by the Jews during their wandering in the wilderness after they were freed from slavery in Egypt.
A celebratory Shabbat meal was served inside the SMCC sukkah on Oct. 11.

Kevin Kimball is known around campus for his trebuchet, his love of blues music and the positive impact he has on his students.
A retired Navy veteran, Kimball has been at SMCC for 16 years. He teaches physics, astronomy and cosmology.
He utilizes the trebuchet — a type of catapult used during the Middle Ages — to help students learn about the laws of motion, ballistics, calculating trajectories and making scientific predictions.
Outside of the classroom, he plays the bottleneck slide guitar in his band, Blue Steel Express, and is active in the Maine Blues Festival.
Kimball likes to engage his students “Navy style” and make sure they have a thorough understanding of what he’s teaching.
“I’m going to make sure you know the arithmetic. I’m going to make sure you know the language. Once we establish that, we can do anything.”
