Welcome...It is my pleasure to bring you greetings and best wishes on
behalf of the Division of Student Affairs. We are thrilled that
your son/daughter/family member is joining us!
Over the next several years, we look forward to an important
partnership with you, which will allow us to work together to
ensure the richest possible experience for your son/daughter/
family member. So we may be effective as partners, it is
important that we provide you an opportunity to get to know
us and our operations. Our Summer Orientation Program, as
well as this publication, is designed to do just that. We urge
you to take some time to review this information, which we
believe you will find useful.
No doubt, both you and your son/daughter/family member
will have many questions as this wonderful higher education
journey unfolds. We encourage you to have your son/daughter/
family member visit us anytime there is a question or concern.
We have an outstanding staff of talented professionals poised to
work with him or her. Additionally, we invite you to contact us
if you have questions.
We look forward to meeting you and beginning our partnership!

Campus and Community — and more.
New Student Orientation — “First Days”The Student Center staff coordinates the SNHU orientation
programs, which are held in January, June and September.
The programs focus on the social, academic and personal
transitions all new students face when going to college.

information you need to know about computer hardware
and software requirements.
Homecoming WeekendSNHU Homecoming is held annually for alumni as well
as current students and their families during the fall term.
This year’s Homecoming Weekend is scheduled for October
18-20, 2013. More information will be sent out toward the
end of the summer.
Family Volunteer ProgramsHere at SNHU, students, alumni, faculty and administrators
are committed to going above and beyond. Parents and family
members of our current students can help us by getting involved
in our Family Volunteer Programs. Contact us if you are
interested in finding ways to connect at SNHU: [email protected].
Disability Services The Office of Disability Services, located in Exeter Hall, Suite
59, coordinates the accommodations and services for students
with documented mobility, sensory, psychiatric attention, chronic
illness and/or learning disabilities. Working closely with the
faculty, staff and the ADA/504 Advisory Panel, the office works
to ensure that reasonable accommodations are made to provide
programs and facilities access to individuals with disabilities.
One StopOne Stop works with students and parents/guardians in
understanding the financial aid process, identifying resources
to assist with paying their bill, and working through other
university administrative and student business needs.
Penmen Cash/Penmen ChangeThe SNHU student ID is a multi-use identification card. It
allows users to gain access to events on campus and contains
information regarding Dining Dollars, Penmen Cash and in
certain cases, is used for room access.
Penmen Cash is a debit system that is available for use in the
Dining Hall, Penmen Place and outside/off-campus vendors.
Outside vendors are listed on penmencash.com. Money may be
added to Penmen Cash at the Sodexo Dining Services office
(603.645.9710) or by visiting penmencash.com. Penmen Cash
refunds may be requested by visiting the Sodexo Dining
Services office or calling 1.800.345.6126.
Penmen Change is a debit system that is available for laundry and
vending transactions, as well as the Hospitality Restaurant,
Café E Dolce and Barnes & Noble bookstore. Students may
add money to Penmen Change at the “Value Terminal” locat-
ed in the Student Center (cash only), via One Stop during busi-
ness hours and/or by mailing a payment. Visa, MasterCard,
American Express and Discover are accepted at One Stop.
SNHU AlertsSNHU Alerts is an optional emergency-alert text messaging
service for students, faculty and staff. SNHU Alerts is just one
method the university will use to communicate emergency
information. We will continue to use a variety of methods as
appropriate, including email, telephone and the Web. SNHU
uses this notification system to send alerts about
• crisis situations affecting the SNHU community
• closings, cancellations, or delays of office hours or classes
Important Student Handbook Information The student handbook is a critical document for SNHU students,
as it contains many of the institution’s policies, expectations,
and student rights and responsibilities, as well as important
federal compliance information regarding the use of substances.
Communication with Students The university uses campus mail and university email as
the official means to communicate with students. It is the
responsibility of the student to regularly check both his or her
intercampus mailbox and email account for information from
the university. Failure to use these modes of university-to-
student communication will not relieve a student for missed
deadlines or date responsibilities.
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, also known
as the Buckley Amendment, affords students certain rights
with respect to their educational records. Under the act, the
primary rights of students include the right to inspect and
review educational records, the right to seek to amend
educational records and the right to have some control over
the disclosure of information from educational records. The
Act applies to all institutions that receive funds under any
program administered by the U.S. Secretary of Education.
Students also have the right to file complaints with the
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act Office concerning
alleged failures by the institution to comply with the act.
Institutions may disclose information to third parties without
violating FERPA through what is known as “directory
information.” At Southern New Hampshire University,
directory information includes:
• student’s name
• address(es)
• telephone listing(s)
• electronic mail address
• photographs
• fields of study [major(s), minor(s), etc.]
• dates of attendance/enrollment status
• anticipated program completion date
• class level
- participation in officially recognized activities and sports
- weight and height of members of athletic teams
- degrees, honors and awards received
- the most recent educational agency or institution attended
Under the provisions of FERPA, students have the right to
request that directory information be withheld from disclosure.
Students who do not want information released to individuals
or organizations outside the university must complete an
Authorization to Prevent Disclosure of Directory Information
Form and submit it to the Office of the University Registrar.
Releasing Information to Parents/Family MembersStudent records regarding academic, financial, social/
disciplinary or other information will not be provided to
parent/family members unless the student completes an
Authorization for Disclosure of Non-Directory Information
Form and submits it to the Office of the University
Registrar specifically authorizing access to his/her
“educational record” information.
