By the time you receive this copy of Dimensions, this will be old news – but we want to be sure our 89.5 listeners know that nPR has decided to end production of talk of the nation as of June 27th. totn, as it’s popularly known, has been a part of WHRV’s weekday schedule for many years; and has a wide and dedicated following.
nPR says it made the decision because it wants to redirect its resources to support news coverage through the middle of the day, rather than call-in talk programming – that is, to produce programs that include interviews and reported segments like those heard on Morning Edition.
nPR representatives believe this new approach will complement the strong local call-in talk shows that many stations produce – although candidly, I doubt many stations have programs of the caliber of Hearsay with Cathy lewis and Another View with Barbara Hamm lee!
nPR knows – and we know – that many listeners will be unhappy about this change. they’ve provided contact information for those who want to register their opinions. For email, go to nPR.org and click on the “Contact us” link. they’ve assured us that emails submitted there will be reviewed by the organization. listeners can contact nPR ombudsman, Edward schumacher-Matos via the “Contact us” option on nPR.org as well.
that leaves WHRV in the position of having to find a new program to fill the timeslot totn occupied. While nPR may offer a substitute program, our Content Officer, Heather Mazzoni and the WHRV Program Director, Anthony Mcspadden are taking the time to research all of the programming that’s available – whether from nPR, Public Radio International or any of the other outlets for public radio content – to make sure that what goes on our air is the best possible fit for our audience. Heather and Anthony have already been discussions with other programmers and sources, and are listening to as much content as they can fit into their days (and evenings.)
I can tell you that selecting the right radio programming for a particular time of day and for a particular audience is much more an art than a science. luckily, Heather and Anthony are both very talented individuals, each with a keen ear for “what works.”
I don’t know as I write this what program they’ll choose, but I do know that it is our highest priority to make sure that what you hear in the 2pm hour on WHRV after June 27th will entertain, engage and inspire you. In the meantime, enjoy the remaining days of talk of the nation – only on public radio!

Free speech in the digital age. marriage equality. Voting rights. Separation of church and state. Presidential power in the post-9/11 world.
these are among today’s many major constitutional debates. And they’re not just being discussed by Justices in the chambers of the supreme Court, they’re being experienced by contemporary Americans as they go about their daily lives.
Peter sagal – known to WHRV listeners as host of nPR’s popular Wait, Wait…Don’t tell me! (heard saturdays at 11am on 89.5FM) – wanted to find out where the Constitution really lives, how it works, and how it unites us as a nation. so he set out across the country on a customized red-white-and-blue Harley-Davidson to talk with “we the people” and record their fascinating stories – from new York to san Francisco, from Missoula, Montana to tyler, texas.
And for each contemporary story, sagal dives into the history behind it and talks to prominent legal scholars, historians and public figures, finding out what the Constitution says, the dramatic historical events and crises that defined the Constitution – and why it all matters. Among the experts he consulted are Akhil Reed Amar, Professor of law and Political science at Yale university; Joaquin Alvarado of the Center for Investigative Reporting; guy-uriel Charles, Professor of law at Duke university; Richard Beeman, university of Pennsylvania Professor of History; Richard Bernstein, Distinguished Adjunct Professor of law at new York law school; Constitutional
scholar linda Monk; and many others of equally distinguished rank. Each one-hour episode of ConstItutIon usA vividly illuminates a central theme, essential to the Constitution: the document’s extraordinary and innovative brand of federalism; individual freedoms and the Bill of Rights; the concepts of equal protection and due process enshrined in the 14th amendment; and the fundamental principle of separation of powers.
ConstItutIon usA looks at the strengths and challenges of our American system of government: how revolutionary the phrase “We the People” was
in 1787, the struggles by African Americans, women and other groups to be included in those words – and how tensions over the proper size and power of government are hard-wired into the document.
the program explores long standing debates over strict interpretation versus a “living Constitution,” looks at the Constitution’s remarkable longevity and even asks whether the Constitution is still “up to” the task of working in the 21st Century.
Far from being a dry historical survey, ConstItutIon usA is about the passion, big ideas and high stakes that went into the document, and which energize and excite us today. We think you’ll be talking about this series long after it’s over.

Hear the story of the world-famous lipizzaner stallions, from their origins in ancient times to the almost unknown drama of their rescue in 1945. The film, which focuses on the bond that develops between horse and rider, begins at the spanish Riding school in Vienna. Here the perfect harmony between horse and rider, as well as the beauty and power of the magnificent white stallions, is cele-brated in their impressive performance. their carefully choreographed movements were originally intended for war. then, only the strongest and most athletic of the horses were chosen. the lipiz-zaner stallion was bred for its courage, strength and character, but the horse is also gentle, sensitive and exceptionally responsive to praise.

tony Award-winning director Michael Mayer (spring Awakening) makes his Met debut with a new production of Verdi’s Rigoletto. the new staging moves the opera’s tragic events from a decadent 16th-century Italian court to the glitzy, depraved setting of the las Vegas strip circa 1960. Polish tenor Piotr Beczala sings the Duke, an amoral lounge singer whose entourage includes the world-weary comedian Rigoletto, sung by Serbian baritone Željko Lučić. German soprano Diana Damrau sings the role of the innocent gilda, Rigoletto’s daughter and the victim of the predatory Duke. Michele Mariotti conducts his first company performances of the Verdi masterwork, which features one of the most famous arias in all of opera, “la donna è mobile.”

Research at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) focuses on the complex ecosystems of estuaries and the coastal ocean. While our work has worldwide impact, it all starts right here in Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.
VIMS research: n guides the recovery of the Bay’s blue crabs and oysters n underlies the sustainability of our commercial and recreational fisheries n provides science-based guidance and information to governments, industry and the public n benefits water quality locally and throughout the world
The need for research will never end—if we’re careful, neither will the benefits that come with healthy waters.

WHRo Center for Regional CitizenshipWhrO community Advisory Board Wants to hear from You
Why do you watch WHRo tV? Are you wild about noVA and Masterpiece? never miss the PBs newsHour? What don’t you ever want to miss on nPR and WHRV? Does your day begin with Morning Edition? Do you plan your lunch breaks around the call-in shows Hearsay with Cathy lewis and Another View? or maybe you keep your dial tuned to the classical music on WHRo FM. From documentaries to car repair and from opera to business, public media delivers diverse programming for a diverse audience. this plethora of programming is not by accident, but grows out of public media’s commitment to be responsive to the interests of people both in particular localities and throughout the united states.
to help ensure that we never lose touch with the people we serve, every station is required by law to have a community advisory board (CAB). WHRo’s Community Advisory Board meets quarterly to provide input and advice on programming priorities and community needs and issues. this feedback is important as we strive to serve our region and respond to critical local issues.
In an ever-changing environment, we need to continually hear from different perspectives and connect with new audiences. If you love your community and believe that WHRo and WHRV have a role to play in making Hampton Roads a more healthy and vibrant place to live, please consider sharing your thoughts and ideas by serving on our CAB. For more information, call Kelly Jackson at 889-9415.
What ifthere were a neighborhood where every child belonged?
Support possibilities
There had never been a program for children like Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Fred Rogers made every kid feel safe, cared for and valued. PBS is committed to ensuring Fred’s legacy lives on with programs, like Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, that open worlds of possibilities for every child. Help us create a neighborhood where all children feel they belong, now…and for generations to come.

A fter a life of hard work and countless commitments, retirement should come with a fair bit of freedom. The freedom from so many responsibilities, and the freedom to live your life exactly as you wish. In short, retirement offers the freedom to take ownership of your life.
Taking ownership at Atlantic Shores is unique and works multiple ways. First, you can buy your home, just as you would anywhere, being able to sell it or pass it on. And, your purchase makes you a shareholder, free to serve on committees and have a voice in the community.
Ownership here also means living independently and on your terms. To come and go, work or play, relax or engage with friends. We invite you to see the beauty, freedom and energy of life at Atlantic Shores. It’s a vibrant neighborhood that allows you to fully take ownership, however you choose to define it. We love hearing from listeners of all agesthis young lady made us smile. (She’s referring to the Writer’s Almanac with Garrison Keillor.)
Hi, Mr.summerall! My name is Holly, and I am 13 years old. I just wanted to let you know how much I love your station. I listen to 90.3 every night, and every morning. I just love the sunday Musical Brunch! Is it you who reads the poems every now and then? I’m not quite sure who it is that reads the poems, but I love the voice of the person who does, and I’d really like to know. I can’t exactly donate any money at the moment, but I’m trying my best. I love 90.3! thank you for all you do to make 90.3 the best station ever!

RICHARD WAGNER BICENTENNIAL • MAy 22 • WHRO 90.3 FM
Richard Wagner created one of the most monumental pieces of art ever conceived – the four music dramas that make up “the Ring of the nibelungen.” He was, by his own admission, “…whatever my passions demand of me…musician, poet, director, author, lecturer or anything else.” In the “anything else” category, we can list a deadbeat, a fugitive from justice, an anti-semite, an unfaithful spouse and a supreme egotist. And yet, 200 years after his birth, his music - Music of the Future, it was called – lives on, enthralling opera goers at every performance. Wednesday, May 22rd, marks the 200th birthday of Richard Wagner and WHRo-FM will celebrate with his music and vignettes about his tumultuous and amazingly creative life.
THE RITE OF SPRING • MAy 29 • WHRo 90.3 FM
It’s first performance caused a riot, compete with fist fights, when the ballet “The Rite of spring” was presented at the theatre de Champs-Elysees in Paris on the evening of May 29, 1913. the audience did not know what to make of the music by the young Russian composer Igor stravinsky, what with the dissonances, the spiky stresses, the abrupt changes in rhythm. As a testament to its modernity, this score about a sacrificial rite in pagan Russia still shocks and amazes a century later. one hundred years to the day of its premiere, WHRo-FM will re-acquaint listeners with this pivotal 20th Century masterpiece.
VIRgInIA ConVERsAtIons• FRIDAyS AT 9AM • WHRV 89.5 FM
Every Friday at 9, Virginia Conversations brings Virginia issues to light. last year, WHRV helped launch this live call-in program with our partner, Virginia Public Radio, because we felt the show had the potential for broad appeal across Hampton Roads and the Eastern shore. Has it ever! Virginia Conversations often covers issues from our region, and often features callers from here. Host May-lily lee brings her veteran expertise to the studio every week, and along with her guests, sheds light on things of importance that may not get broader coverage from other news outlets. We hope you tune in every week for Virginia Conversations, Fridays at 9 on WHRV.
