Fouling-Release Coatings:In-Service Performance
U.S. Navy has been evaluating fouling-release (FR) coatings on a small number
of ships for ~20 years, and has seldom observed consistent sloughing of hard
fouling.
Full scale performance not matching panel test results.
• Operational area and operational tempo
• Screening test protocol

MIL-PRF-24647E is a performance specification to qualify paint systems intended
for use on the underwater hulls of Navy/DoD vessels.
• Panels immersed statically and uncaged in Biscayne Bay, FL
• Tested in flow channel quarterly for 8 quarters
• Hard fouling shall occupy <40% of the surface prior to flow channel testing
• Hard fouling shall occupy <20% of the surface after flow channel testing at 20 kts

Flow channel test: in general accordance with ASTM D4938
• Replicate panels immersed at Miami test site
– 3 caged, 3 uncaged
• Tested quarterly for 8 quarters
• Run at 10, 20 and 30 kts for 15 min each
• Fouling community measured as percent cover (ASTM D6990)
