Baiting Baiting or hunting over bait is prohibited on the refuge. Blaze Orange Requirements A minimum of 400 square inches of blaze orange must be worn by all hunters, except waterfowl, when deer firearms season is open. Disabled Access Disabled hunters are encouraged to participate in refuge hunts. Two accessible hunting blinds are available for use on the refuge by reservation throughout the hunting season (see map.) Please contact the refuge headquarters at 304/866-3858, to request additional information about disabled access. Due to increased demand, reservations for the hunt blind may be limited. Dogs Dog training is prohibited except during respective game hunting seasons. Dogs can be used to hunt birds, bear, raccoon, rabbit and hare. Hunting birds with pointing and/or retrieving dogs will be permitted, but no more than 2 dogs per hunter will be allowed in the field. No more than 6 dogs per hunting party are permitted for bear. No more than 4 dogs per hunting party are permitted for rabbit, hare and raccoon. Extra dogs remaining in a hunter’s vehicle will not count as dogs in the field. A special use permit is required for raccoon hunting at night. When hunting with dogs, hunters must account for all dogs at the conclusion of the hunt. All dogs are required to wear a collar displaying the owner’s name, address and telephone number. When hunting bear, releasing and picking up dogs on Cortland Road and Beall Lane is prohibited. Firearms Persons possessing, transporting or carrying firearms on national wildlife refuges must comply with all provisions of state and local law. Persons may only use (discharge) firearms in accordance with refuge regulations (50 CFR 27.42 and specific refuge regulations in 50 CFR Part 32). Weapons legally possessed for hunting are the same as those prescribed by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. Pistols may only be used in the rifle zone area. The use of rifles during the turkey season is prohibited. Non-Toxic Shot Hunters must use and possess non-toxic shot while hunting waterfowl on the refuge. Research Natural Area The Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to preserve the natural features and processes of the area for research and education purposes. Only deer hunting will be allowed in the RNA. Tree Stands/Blinds The construction or use of permanent structures is prohibited on refuge lands. Only temporary tree stands or blinds may be used. All tree stands must have the name and address of the owner clearly printed on the stand. Bending, trimming or cutting branches is prohibited. It is unlawful to hunt from blinds made from cut conifer (balsam fir, red spruce, hemlock) tree branches. It is unlawful to drive a nail, spike, climbing screw or other metal object into any tree or to hunt from any tree in which a nail, spike, climbing screw or other metal object has been driven. All stands must be removed by the last day of deer season. Wild Turkey Spring and fall wild turkey hunting is permitted in accordance with state regulations with the following exception: rifle hunting is prohibited. Shotgun, archery and muzzleloader hunting is permitted. Also, shot larger than #4 is prohibited. Raccoon A special use permit is required in addition to the refuge hunt permit. Contact the refuge office for information. Youth Hunting Youth 14 years old or younger hunting in West Virginia must be directly supervised by a licensed adult at least 18 years of age. The refuge will participate in the state scheduled Youth/Class Q hunt days. A refuge hunt permit is required regardless of the hunter’s age. General Refuge Regulations Hours The refuge is open from 1 hour before sunrise until 1 hour after sunset. All refuge access is prohibited after dark unless specifically authorized by the Refuge Manager. Vehicles Only legally licensed vehicles are allowed on refuge roads. Vehicles are permitted only on public roads and refuge access roads. Off-road vehicles including ATV’s and snowmobiles are prohibited. Parking/Roads Vehicles must park in designated parking areas or alongside open refuge roads in a manner that will not interfere with the normal flow of traffic. Parking overnight on refuge roads is prohibited except for overnight parking on Forest Road 80 for camping at Dolly Sods Wilderness Area. This may be permitted by special use permit in designated parking lot only. Permit must be requested at least three days in advance of date needed. Refuge roads may be seasonally closed due to adverse weather conditions or management needs. Vehicles must remain on established roads as indicated on the map of this brochure. Camping and Fires Camping and fires are prohibited. Alcoholic Beverages The possession or use of alcoholic beverages while hunting is prohibited. Littering Littering is prohibited. LEAVE NO TRACE! Refuge Cultural Resources Disturbing, injuring, destroying, collecting, or attempting to collect any Articles of Antiquity or of historical value, plants, animals, or parts thereof is strictly prohibited. Trail Marking Marking any tree or other refuge feature with flagging, paint or other substance for the purposes of marking a trail is prohibited. Accidents and Violations In case of an emergency, dial 911. All accidents and injuries occurring on the refuge must be reported immediately at the refuge headquarters. Phone: 304/866 3858. Please report violations to the Federal Wildlife Officer at 304/815 3000. REMEMBER! A refuge hunt permit authorizes you to take specified game species only. Harming or needlessly disturbing any wildlife including birds, mammals, turtles, frogs, lizards and snakes is a violation of refuge regulations and is cause for prosecution. The future of hunting on the refuge requires responsible hunter behavior and compliance with regulations. The Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge provides habitat for endangered and threatened wildlife. These animals are protected by Federal and state laws that prohibit any activities that may cause them harm. The following threatened and endangered wildlife may be found on the refuge: Indiana bat Cheat Mountain salamander Northern long-eared bat The following species has been delisted but is still considered rare: Virginia northern flying squirrel Unexploded Ordnance During World War II the US Army used our area for target practice. All unexploded ordnances (UXOs) that have been found have been removed. However, there is still a risk that some undetected UXOs may resurface. The powder used in these may still be explosive. Please RECOGNIZE it, RETREAT from it and REPORT it. RECOGNIZE: UXOs can vary in shape and size up to 23 inches. It may look old and rusty or shiny and new. Do not touch or move it! RETREAT: Mark the location by getting a GPS point, tying a scarf to a tree and/or making an arrow pointing to it with sticks or stones. Then retreat, going back the way you came. REPORT: Report the location of the UXO to the US Army by calling 1 888/283 0303 and to the refuge by calling the Federal Wildlife Officer at 304/815 3000. The refuge was established to protect wetlands and to conserve fish and wildlife resources. Compatible public use is permitted on the refuge, including wildlife observation, wildlife photography, environmental education, interpretation, fishing and hunting (in designated areas, in accordance with state, federal, and refuge regulations). A complete listing of laws which govern hunting is set forth in Title 50, Code of Federal Regulations. As a part of the National Wildlife Refuge Improvement Act of 1997, Congress identified hunting as one the six wildlife dependent priority public uses that should be facilitated on national wildlife refuges. In 1998, 50 CFR Part 32 (1988-1999 Refuge-Specific Hunting and Sport Fishing Regulations) added Canaan Valley NWR to the list of refuges open for hunting. This rule specifically allowed hunting of migratory game birds, upland game and big game at Canaan Valley NWR as a wildlife-dependent recreational activity. The refuge’s Comprehensive Conservation Plan identifies hunting as an acceptable and traditional form of recreation, particularly on lands that have historically supported hunting. General Hunting Information Access Refuge lands can be accessed from the following locations: State Route 32, Cortland Road, Beall Lane, Timberline Road, Freeland Road, Forest Road 80, Camp 70 Road, and A-Frame Road. Parking areas are depicted on the map in this brochure. Hunters accessing the refuge through private property must have the written permission of the landowner in their possession at all times. Areas Open/Seasons Hunting is permitted on most refuge lands with the following exceptions: The land surrounding the refuge headquarters and the areas that are marked No Hunting Zones. Please refer to the map. Hunting is permitted in accordance with state and refuge regulations from September 1 through February 28. In addition, turkey may be taken during the spring turkey season. Species The following game species may be taken on refuge lands during applicable state and refuge seasons: white-tailed deer, black bear, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, mourning dove, waterfowl, coot, rail, gallinule, snipe, woodcock, rabbit, hare, squirrel, fox, raccoon, bobcat, woodchuck, coyote, opossum and striped skunk. The hunting of all other species of wildlife is prohibited. Special Hunting Regulations Refuge Hunt Permit/WV State License Only persons possessing a current, signed Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge Hunt Permit, a Government issued photo ID, and a West Virginia state hunting license are authorized to hunt on the refuge. The refuge follows state hunting regulations for private land. All hunters hunting on Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge must follow the licensing guidelines set by the state of West Virginia and the refuge. Hunters must be in possession of their refuge hunt permit, state hunting license and valid driver’s license (or other Government issued photo identification card) at all times while hunting on the refuge. Bird hunters may also need additional stamps and a Harvest Information Program (HIP) number. Please refer to state Migratory Bird Hunting Regulations for further information. Public Hunting Area The area behind this sign is open for hunting in accordance with state and refuge regulations.

Area ClosedAreas on the refuge are closed to provide resource protection, special management activities, or for safety reasons. (See map for specific closures). In these areas roads and trails are not open to the public. No fishing, hunting or other recreational uses are permitted.
