Canada’s National Ballet School’s 50th Anniversary Gala
On Saturday, February 6, 2010, Canada’s National Ballet School
will host its annual signature fundraising gala. This year, we will
celebrate with a theme of Fête d’Or or gold celebration in keeping
with this momentous occasion. As the traditional gift on a
fiftieth anniversary is gold, we will create a golden evening
of festivities to mark this milestone in NBS’ history.
We invite you to join our 800+ guest list consisting of Toronto’s
most influential taste-leaders who, in keeping with the theme of
the celebration, will gather to honour Joan and Jerry Lozinski,
two dedicated philanthropists who play a vital role in helping
to ensure the future of many leading arts institutions including
Canada’s National Ballet School. We will also be honouring
the leadership, work and vision of our Artistic Director and
Co-CEO, Mavis Staines.
As a patron of Fête d’Or, you will join the glamour of a party
experience that is textured, original and fun set against the
elegant backdrop of The Fairmont Royal York Hotel. You’ll
listen to your favourite songs mixed with a contemporary beat,
sip on signature martinis, enjoy an exquisite culinary experience,
and witness an inspiring repertoire of dance performances that
showcase the exceptional talent of NBS students. After dinner,
and before you indulge your sweet-tooth, raise your paddle high
to bid on some exciting Live Auction items and experiences,
and then get ready to dance the night away. All this, wrapped
into one amazing night!

All proceeds raised through the Fête d’Or Gala will be directed
to Canada’s National Ballet School (NBS), an international leader
in ballet training. Dedicated to advancing the art of ballet, NBS
develops dance professionals in a student-centred environment
by weaving innovation and evolving practice with the finest
teaching traditions. Established in 1959, Canada’s National
Ballet School is one of the world’s foremost training institutions
for aspiring young dancers and teachers. Attracting students
from across the country and around the world, NBS is the only
ballet academy in North America to provide elite dance training,
academic instruction and residential care on the same campus.
This year, NBS is celebrating 50 years of nurturing and
supporting aspiring dance artists and teachers. Our students
have the talent and passion necessary to make dancing their
professional ambition. They posess the drive to pursue this
dream to the greatest heights it can take them. They leave NBS
with a desire to share the dancing they have perfected with the
world. To do this, our students need you—people who share our
desire to develop emerging talent by extending generous
financial support.
Canada’s National Ballet School is a fiscally sound, registered
Canadian charitable organization supported by donors, sponsors,
and government bodies. In exchange for sponsorship,
participating organizations receive a comprehensive marketing
benefits package that guarantees an increased public profile
and ongoing exposure.
Your Support Allows Us to Excel
Well-known philanthropists Joan and Jerry Lozinski have been
selected as the Fête d’Or honourees for their commitment to
Canada’s National Ballet School and the passion they share for
the arts. Joan and Jerry are long-standing patrons of Canada’s
National Ballet School. They have donated not only to the
endowment campaign—to which they are among NBS’ leading
donors—but also to the capital campaign. Their generosity to
NBS positions them as one of NBS’ constant pillars of support,
and allows NBS to fulfill its mandate of talent being the sole
criterion for acceptance into the school.
Joan and Jerry Lozinski’s involvement with NBS is inspiring
to a wide audience, both corporations and individuals alike.
Their unwavering belief in the importance of the arts and arts
education, their tireless promotion of the causes they value,
and their unending generosity towards the school have touched
the lives of many of NBS’ staff, students and artists. They take
pride in their relationship with NBS, which goes much deeper
than that of donor and recipient. Throughout their years-long
involvement with NBS they have hosted international talent
multiple times, forging deep and long-lasting relationships with
many of NBS’ students, including their two partner students. The
younger of their partner students continues to study and train at
NBS, while the older recently graduated and is now employed
as a professional dancer, thanks to the Lozinksis’ belief in his
talent and their support.
Joan and Jerry Lozinski’s leadership and commitment to
Canadian arts and education is a cornerstone in Toronto’s arts
and culture community. The dedication they have demonstrated
has changed the face of Canada’s philanthropic landscape for
future generations. On Saturday, February 6, 2010, we will
celebrate and honour Joan and Jerry Lozinski for their long-
standing dedication to the arts and in particular to Canada’s
National Ballet School.

At Canada’s National Ballet School, a legacy of belief in the
power of dance extends throughout the School’s many
programs. Ongoing analysis of teaching methods, a willingness
to explore new ideas and an overriding vision that dance has
the power to make the world a better place; these are the
trademarks of Mavis Staines, the Artistic Director of Canada’s
National Ballet School. Her contributions to the global dance
community are vast and varied and as such, NBS will honour
Staines as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations.
Born in Quebec’s Eastern Townships and raised in Vancouver,
Staines received most of her training at Canada’s National Ballet
School. Upon graduation from NBS, she joined The National
Ballet of Canada, where she rose to the rank of Soloist after
only two years. She then danced with the Dutch National Ballet,
before having her performance career cut short by injury.
Staines returned to Canada and enrolled in NBS’ Teacher
Training Program. She joined the NBS staff as a teacher in
1982, and became Associate Artistic Director under Betty
Oliphant in 1984. In 1989, upon Oliphant’s retirement, Staines
became NBS’ Artistic Director.
Staines developed a strong relationship with the Prix de
Lausanne, Switzerland, which is long believed to be the
pre-eminent ballet competition for young dancers. Staines
served as a juror for three years and became the first person in
the Prix’s 25-year history to head the jury as President for two
years in a row. Her presentation at the Prix’s Symposium went
on to be published by Dance Magazine in 1997 under the title,
“Going Beyond Classical Tradition.” From 2001 to 2008, she
served as the Artistic President of the Prix.
Staines' ground-breaking work in evolving ballet training has
also made an impact on the world’s dance community through
her lectures and conference presentations. In 2009, as part of
the festivities involved in celebrating NBS’ 50th anniversary,
Staines and colleagues have planned the Assemblée
Internationale (AI), a student-centred dance festival. This event
will bring over 150 staff and students from 12 of NBS’ partner
schools to Toronto for one week in November, where they will
rehearse and learn together while Artistic Staff will participate in
daily strategy sessions. Each of the participating schools will
rehearse a work from that School's existing repertoire. They will
also bring a new, student-choreographed work, which will be
rehearsed by a group composed of students from each of the
participating Schools. The AI will culminate with performances
of both the existing repertoire and student-choreographed
works, as well as a day-long student conference. This dual
focus on community-building on an international basis, as well
as opportunities to discuss the evolution of ballet teaching
methods, is just one of the many ways Mavis Staines has
impacted the international ballet community.
Over the years, Mavis Staines has served in various capacities
with a number of dance-related organizations. In 1998 she won
the Toronto Arts Award for the Performing Arts. In November
2006, she was named by the Women's Executive Network as
one of Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100, and in 2008
she was presented an Honourary Doctorate in Humanities from
Mount Saint Vincent University.
