When one thinks about it, it is surprising that it has taken the Montreal Section so long to think of a "Sugaring-off Party". Maple syrup andsugar have long been a well known, if not economically important, foodproduct of Quebec and "Sugaring-off Parties" have traditionally been important (sweet and sticky) social events. Finally some bright memberthought of the suitability of such a social event for the Section, and onApril I, 1978, more than 50 members went to Chez Bou-Bou in St. Dominique, Quebec. The party was perhaps a little sticky but such a sweet success that it will likely become an Annual event.

Their last technical session took place in April, when the Section assembled in the Hilton Hotel in Dorval, where they were joined with theMontreal Home Economists Association to hear a paper on "The Practical Application of Microcrystalline Cellulose". This interesting paperwas presented by Mr. Wiliam R. Thomas, Product Manager, Food Materials Corporation, U.S.A. On May 10, the Section held its Annual Meeting, when the Officers listed above were elected and installed to rule theSection for the ensuing twelve months. This was a dinner meeting and theafter-dinner speaker was M. Claude Cote, President of CommuniplexInc. His topic was his company's iDvolvement with the Quebec advertising campaign "Au Quebec, faut se tenir ... en sante".

We thank M. Jean-Gilles Noel for supplying this information inEnglish.

Although it is likely to be included elsewhere in this issue, it is fittingthat this column should congratulate Ben Berck on his being granted theEmeritus Membership Status. One of Ben's many contributions to the development of our Institute was his promotion of a News-Letter to ourmembers. Thus, he can be known as one of the instigators of the InstituteAffairs Section of our Journal. Another interesting news item from theManitoba Section is that Past President Grant McLeod was one of theluncheon speakers at the recent c.I.c. Annual Conference in Winnipeg.Grant McLeod, who is now the Director of the Environmental ControlBranch of the Dept. of Mines, Resources, and Environmental Management. He spoke on the problems facing the development of strategies thatwill lead to realistic monitoring of the environment and sound legislationto control the effects of pollution.
