Let Every Day Be Christmas ~ by Norman W. Brooks
Christmas is forever, not for just one day, For loving, sharing & giving are not to be put away
Like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf. The good you do for others is good you do yourself!
Peace on Earth, Good Will to men, Kind thoughts and words of cheer
Are things we should use often and not just once a year
Remember too the Christ child, grew up to be a man; To hide him in a cradle is not our dear Lord’s plan.
So keep the Christmas spirit, share it with others far and near, From week to week and month to month, throughout the entire year!
Annual Christmas Turkey Lunch!!
On Wednesday, December 21st, we will have “A Holly Jolly Christmas Time” at Canadian Martyrs school with
turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and let’s not forget the vegetables. Many thanks to School Council for
organizing this event. What better way to celebrate Christmas and be thankful for the many blessings at
Canadian Martyrs School than by sharing a turkey lunch!! Yum!!
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Hello Crusaders Community!
The month of December is upon us and so it the time when we prepare our souls for the coming of Jesus at
Christmas. This is the time of year when we need to take some time to reflect on how we have helped others and
how we can continue to help others. After all, it was Jesus who challenged us to “Love thy neighbor as yourself.”
At Canadian Martyrs we have done so many things to help others in our community and throughout the school.
We have participated in the Terry Fox Run, we have done a Thanksgiving food drive, and we are starting our Angel
Tree initiative. In school we see helping hands each and everyday on the yard and in the school. We see our
book buddies helping others, our office helpers, our announcement helpers, our library helpers, and so many
others. Let’s take some time this Christmas Season to reflect on how each and every one of us can help to make
“...earth, as it is in heaven.” Merry Christmas Crusaders!

Christmas Book Fair: December 5th - 7th
You are invited to visit our Scholastic Book Fair and take a look
at the many books on display. The Book Fair will be open for
purchases Monday December 5th and Tuesday December 6th
from 8:45 am to 4:15 pm, and Wednesday December 7th from
8:45 am to 11:30 am. Purchases can be made with cash,
cheques (made out to “Canadian Martyrs School”), credit cards,
or debit cards.
As in past years, there will be a special draw for parents who
attend the Book Fair on December 5th or 6th. You could win
$25.00 in books for your child, and $25.00 in books for your
child’s classroom. Watch for more details and a Book Fair flyer
coming soon to a backpack near you. Your support for our Book
Fair helps provide new books for our library, and shows our
children that we value books and reading. Hope to see you at
the Book Fair!
Christmas Outreach Program
Angel Tree
Just a reminder that our school is participating in the St. Anthony Daniel Parish “Angel Tree”
program from Monday, November 28th until Tuesday, December 12th. The angel tree will be the
primary symbol of our outreach activities during Advent. A permission form has gone home and if
you would like your child to participate please sign the bottom portion of the form and return it to
the office. Once returned, your child can choose an angel from the tree. Please return the angel
along with an unwrapped gift. We will then exchange the angel for a star that your child can write
their name on and place on the tree. Our hope is to change all the angels to stars!! The angel
tree gifts will be picked up by the St. Vincent de Paul staff early on Friday, December 18th.
The staff at Canadian Martyrs School are extremely appreciative for the kindness and generosity that has
been shown by our school community through these charitable initiatives. Thank you for your continued
support.
“Giving from the heart is the very best of all gifts.”
Primary Christmas Concert
What would Christmas be without
singing, dancing, and
performances? On Friday,
December 16th, the Primary
classes (JK -3) are once again
having a Primary Christmas Concert
in the gym beginning at 2:30 p.m.
Hope to see you there!
And still more Happening @ our school . . .
Important Notice - Parents and Students
PLAYGROUND CLIMBING STRUCTURE IS NOW CLOSED!!
Everything within our power is done to ensure that our outdoor climbing apparatus (creative playground)
continues to provide both a safe and enjoyable student activity. Regular visual safety inspections, student
reminders of safe practices and daily staff supervision help to minimize the chance that accidents will occur
while playing on the climber. Unfortunately, the one variable that we cannot control is the weather.
With the onset of winter, the ground cover around the apparatus freezes, creating an unsafe condition for our
students. The frozen base no longer cushions the impact as students descend the slides and poles or jump
from the platforms. This condition could result in a serious injury to the student. When our board’s Safety
Officer issues an advisory that the ground is frozen, the use of the climbing apparatus will no longer be safe.
To this end, our climbing structure is now closed until the base surrounding the equipment is no longer
frozen. Parents are also advised that the climbing apparatus should not be used outside of regular school
hours until it is safe to do. If conditions change, we will let the students know via an announcement in the
morning.
Colder weather will soon be upon us! Please ensure that your child(ren) come to school dressed
appropriately for outdoor weather. All students should have coats, hats, mittens, scarves, and
warm boots. Please provide a pair of indoor shoes as students are required to wear footwear at all
times. Playing outdoors is a pleasant & healthy activity when students are wearing suitable
clothing. We will monitor the weather conditions daily and make decisions based upon our local
conditions. In the colder weather we receive requests to allow students to remain indoors when
they are sick.
Please remember that children who are too ill to go outside should be resting at home.
When the weather is bad in the morning, listen to your local Waterloo Region radio station for
cancellations (CHYM 96.7) OR check the school board web site for the cancellation link. One click
will tell you if your bus is cancelled and/or if your school is closed.

Healthy Holiday Celebrations!
Holiday celebrations allow schools the opportunity to make nutritious foods taste great. They also
provide an opportunity for students to learn about healthy eating. With a little creativity, you can help
students practice what they know about healthy eating and Canada’s Food Guide during the holiday
celebrations!
Shift the focus from food to fun!
Have a tasting party where kids can vote which healthy foods they would like to have. Including kids in the
decision making may enhance their acceptance of healthy foods at celebrations
Ask parents to bring things like games, crafts and other fun activity items instead of food
Food Ideas
Use nature’s colours to your advantage! There are a ton of vegetables to match the colours of the season.
Create a Christmas tree out of broccoli and various veggies as tree ornaments
Use carrot sticks as a representation of Hanukah candles
Make fruit kabobs, alternating green and red grapes, or green and red apple pieces
Decorate mini bagel holiday ornaments with colourful veggies cut in a variety of shapes
Cut fruit into the shape of snowflakes (repurpose the cookie cutters!)
