Kyle Lucyk Visits SaskatoonOn October 31, 2010 , Kyle Lucyk of Winnipeg spoketo the Saskatchewan Orchid Society. Kyle comes fromManitoba where he earned his degree in AgriculturalEcology from the University of Manitoba. He workedfor Ecuagenera in Ecuador for almost one year , doingall kinds of work ranging from tours, to photography,to hands-on work in the greenhouses. He has alsotravelled in Canada and Europe as a representative forEcuagenera.

Kyle grows orchids in his Winnipeg basement, evengrowing some of his orchids from seeds. He presentlyworks with the city of Winnipeg as a naturalist and isserving as vice-president of the Manitoba OrchidSociety.

Kyle spoke of his work at Ecuagenera, one ofEcuador’s largest orchid exporters. He talked briefly oftheir greenhouse operation, but the bulk of his talkwas about orchids in the wild and how he applies hisknowledge to growing them at home.

One method of bringing down night-time temperatureswas using clay pots whose temperatures dropped dueto evaporation. Using altitudes of naturally growingorchids , he tries to attain similar conditions. Humidityis increased by utilizing more moss as a growingmedium, and by putting it around his orchids. Hespoke of switching mounted orchids to pots, in orderto attain more consistent humidity. He uses fluorescentlighting. He also suggested using warmer growingmasdevalias to achieve more success in our homegrowing. He gave several examples.

Unfortunately, due some technical difficulties, Kylecould not show the visual part of his presentation, which would have added much to his talk. After somehastily-made notes, he regained his composure andcame back with a very informative and interestingpresentation.

Kyle promised the Orchid Society, he would send thevisual portion of his presentation along with a writtenscript for us to use at a future meeting. To date, wehave not received the presentation, but anxiously awaitits arrival as we could use it for one of those meetingswhen a speaker was not available.

Kyle brought a selection of his plants for sale. Theseincluded divisions and seedlings of Phragmipediums,Masdevalias, Lycastes and Maxillarias. These werewell received by the membership.

On the downside, this was a very expensiveundertaking for SOS. Airfare was double what we hadanticipated and along with other expenses, this turnedout to be very expensive. However we are mostgrateful to the COC for the travel grant they sograciously made available to us, for assisting us tobring in out -of-city speakers and for bringing ourcosts down considerably. Thank you again and again.

Respectfully submitted: SOS

COC Travel GrantThis is the second year the COC has offered the TravelGrant. Five societies have received $200.00 each tobring in a guest speaker. The societies that received thegrant this year are: Saskatchewan Orchid Society,Orchid Society of Nova Scotia, PEI Orchid Society,Windsor Orchid Society, and Essex County OrchidSociety. We look forward to reading about theseevents in future COC newsletters.

Gail Schwarz, COC Education Chair

Treasurer ReportAs of March 31, 2011, the COC finances are in verygood shape. Thanks to unexpected revenues and lowercosts for some activities, we should end the year with asurplus of approximately $1,500 compared tobudgetary deficit of about $500. Since it is still earlyin the year, we should not conclude that this will be thefinal results as many unexpected issues may come uplater in the year.

André Couture, COC Treasurer

From the PresidentElsewhere in this Newsletter you will find a PressRelease from Les Orchidophiles de Montrealannouncing their bid proposal for the 2017 WorldOrchid Conference that they will be putting before theWorld Orchid Conference in Singapore this fall. TheMontreal club is a very active group that has strategicalliances with other Quebec societies as well as theworld famous Montreal Botanical Gardens. On behalfof COC I have offered whatever assistance we cangive to this very significant proposal. Andre Poliquinhas assured us that they will not require any financialassistance. While Les Orchidophiles de Montreal hasnever joined COC, what they propose is of interest andof benefit to all of Canada and deserves the fullsupport of all Canadian orchid enthusiasts.

The spring show season here in the East is almost at anend. We have seen wonderful shows in London,Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal, Rochester, Quebec Cityand Ottawa. Some of the results are reported elsewherein this newsletter. We look forward to receiving theresults of all shows and exhibitions in Canada.

There has been some scuttlebutt about the cost of ourinsurance program relative to other such programs forgarden clubs. A little investigation revealed that ourprogram has some worthwhile extras such as insurancefor our shows which in this day and age is veryimportant.

On the financial front our treasurer, Andre Couture, reports that we are presently doing better thanexpected relative to our budget. The Edmonton AGMsilent auction has netted us approximately $1000. Wethank all donors and bidders as well as those wholooked after the auction. The Alberta Orchid Societyhas also indicated that they will not be asking for theCOC AGM subsidy.

If in the summer ahead you should have plans to visitToronto, the Southern Ontario Orchid Society invitesyou to SOOS Orchidfest 2011 on Sunday August 7 atthe Toronto Botanical Gardens, Lawrence AvenueEast at Leslie Street. AOS judging starts at 10 am. Youare welcome to sit in or bring plants for judging. Thereis a pot luck lunch at noon, and there are two talksstarting at 1 pm. Montreal’s proposal for the 22ndWorld Orchid Conference in 2017

The Montreal orchid society Les Orchidophiles deMontreal was founded in 1978. Since 1982, theyset up their annual spring orchid show,Orchidexpo. This orchid society has grownconstantly over the past 20 years, themembership culminating to 750 members in2004. The Orchidexpo show has also evolvedand it is today one of the most important inCanada, attracting specialists from all over theworld. The creation of an AOS (American OrchidSociety) judging center in Montreal, with thesupport of this Montreal orchid society isconsequent with this orchid culture enthusiasm inQuebec.

Every year now, two Orchid Shows attract theamateurs and professionals in Montreal. TheOrchidexpo, set up by Les Orchidophiles ofMontreal is presented in the spring, while theEastern Canada Orchid Society holds itsexhibition in the fall. The Saguenay Lac-Saint-Jean and the Quebec City orchid societies alsohave their parallel activities in other regions ofQuebec province.

The Montreal Botanical Garden joined theMontreal Orchidophiles in this project of holding aWorld Orchid Conference (WOC) in 2017. Closeties between these two organizations quicklyresulted in the enhancement of the quality ofcultivation of orchids and their presentation atOrchid Shows. Suffice it to mention that in thepast three years, more than 100 AOS trophiesand awards were granted to them.

The candidature of Montréal

Over the last decade, the Board of Directors of LaSociété des Orchidophiles of Montreal studied theidea of holding a World Congress (WOC) inMontreal. Participation in the Vancouver congress(1999), Dijon (2005) and Miami (2008) allowedofficials to better assess the task, and convincedthem to propose this bid for holding the 22ndCongress of 2017. The involvement of the Palaisdes Congrès de Montréal and Tourisme Montréalhelped to take this decision and Les

Orchidophiles de Montréal filed the candidature ofMontréal for this 22nd World Congress of 2017.

This 7 days exhibition would be presented inSeptember 2017, at Le Palais des Congrès deMontréal. The site offers all the qualities requiredfor holding of such an event, both by the quality ofthe services offered as by the proximity and easyaccess to the many hotels surrounding it. Theparticipation of Tourisme Montréal and theMontreal Botanical Garden are major assets forthe success of the Congress. In 2017, Montréalwill also be celebrating its 375nd foundationanniversary. This will be an ideal opportunity forthe coming of the WOC.

The choice of a site by the WOC Trust.

It is a committee of two representatives of theAmerican Orchid Society and two representativesof the Royal Horticultural Society that constitutesthe World Orchid Trust., headquartered inBermuda. The WOC is presented once every 3years, in different parts of the globe. The 20thCongress of Singapore, in November 2011, willbe followed by a 21st Congress 2014 in SouthAfrica. Considering the policy of alternationapplied by the WOC Trust, Montreal would havea good chance to be chosen for 2017. Organizersalready know that China (Sanya City) andPortugal (city of Joinville) also filed theirapplications for the same 2017 Conference, andthey anticipate that other applications could befiled. It is at the Singapore Congress, after thepresentations made by the representatives ofthese countries that the decision will be taken.Les Orchidophiles de Montréal is now preparingthis Singapore presentation for the candidature ofMontréal.

Activities during a World Orchid Conference

There are 3 types of activities during a WOC. It isabove all a meeting of nearly 2000 delegates, coming from all over the world that will attendsessions of lectures and conferences. Thosesessions are spread on a week and deal withscientific subjects, conservation, and horticulture.

A fantastic world exhibition of displays of orchidsis set up during the WOC. It attracts each time

hundreds of thousands of visitors, amateurs asprofessionals, and organizers are convinced thatMontréal will attract all major exhibitors whousually attend these exhibitions. It is in itself aunique tourist attraction for Montreal and Quebec.

Finally, Montreal and Quebec offer many touristand international attractions that meet the thirdgoal of a WOC. The Montreal Botanical Gardenand the Insectarium, the Biodome, but also theSt. Lawrence River, old Montreal, the Chinesedistrict, the Montreal Casino and Cirque du Soleilare among the many attractions that are near thesite of the Congress. The organizers areconsidering many projects that may entertaineven the most adventurous participants.

The Organizing Committee

The members of the Organizing Committee haveacquired a great reputation. Mr André Poliquin, who took the leadership, assisted by Mr. JocelynThibeault, as Mr Mario Mireault and Mrs GilberteBensoussan, have all been a member of theExecutive Committee of the Board of Directors ofLa Société des Orchidophiles de Montréal since1989. The team that they have built around themshows great expertise in the fields of orchidculture and orchid shows, of administration, import of orchids, as in the field of the AOSjudgment, but also the organization of congressand in the tourism field. This embryonic team willwait the official choice of the WOC Trust beforemaking a full expansion. Organizers of coursehope for the support of all Canadian OrchidSocieties for the realization of this project, andmany societies have already ensured them oftheir full cooperation.

Orchid flowers fool flat-footed fliesby faking fungus-infected foliageThe lady’s slipper orchid (Cypripedium fargesii) doesnot look well. Its red and yellow flowers are nestledamong two large leaves, both covered in unsightlyblack splotches. These look like the signs of a fungalinfection, but they’re not. This orchid is deceptive, notdiseased. It produces the black spots itself and in doingso, it lures in flat-footed flies that feed on fungus. Theflies, duped by the orchid’s false spots, pick up pollenand spread it to another flower. By appearing infected, the orchid reproduces.

PEI Orchid ClubOn April 14, almost 30 avid orchid growers met inCharlottetown for a P.E.I. Orchid Club meeting. TheClub had a special guest speaker, Mr. Don Northcottfrom Phytocultures Ltd. This company specializes inplant tissue culture systems and offers a tissue culturekit for orchids. Mr. Northcott gave an informativepresentation which highlighted the steps to reproduce afavourite orchid. Phytocultures Ltd. also producesplants from seed. Mr. Northcott invited the membersto pollinate their favourite orchid and then have theseed capsule given to him for flasking. He suggestedthat then the Club members could have a challenge tosee who could flower the first plant from flask.Needless to say, the members were ready for thechallenge! Mr. Northcott also demonstrated meristempropogation. Although the demonstration plant usedwas not an orchid, each member got a memento of themeeting with a tissue culture vial containing a tinydaylily!

Although we are a new club, our members have awealth of enthusiasm and guest speakers help us tolearn and grow our orchids. We are grateful to Mr.Northcott for his time and we look forward to visitinghis tissue culture facility during a future meeting.

34th Annual London OrchidSociety Show & SaleThe London Orchid Society (LOS) held its 34th annualShow and Sale on March 19 & 20, 2011, at a newlocation, Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School. This new building has warm natural light streaming intoit, lots of space for displays, vendors, and orchid lovers.Under the excellent direction of Show Chair, SeanMoore, another successful show was held.

LOS Display Receives COC Award

When visitors stepped into our new display hall, theywere greeted by the COC award-winning display, created by the London Orchid Society.

Under the leadership of Mike Dahms, his artistic teamcreated a dramatic woodland clearing, with soaringbranches and vertical colour blocks of orchids, thatcascaded down to puddles of colour on the floor. Asmall branch fence framed the clearing. China birdswatched the visitors. A shy lamb peered inquisitivelyover a fence rail at the door, contemplating anadventure.

And, everywhere, absolutely everywhere, orchidsbelonging to LOS members filled the table.

The well-grown plants were individual stars. LOSmembers took home six first-place ribbons, sixsecond-place ribbons, and eight third-place ribbons, for an impressive total of 20 ribbons. And that’s notall! Two rosettes were awarded for best in theirrespective classes.

Our generous LOS members brought much joy topeople, and they helped to make this exhibit a winner.Participation is its own reward!

The two best in class Rosette winners at the COCawarding winning LOS display were:

Vanda Pakchong Blue – Russell Stoddart & TracyNelson – First Place & Rosette for best in VandaAlliance

Onc. croesus – Larry Churchill – First Place &Rosette for best in Oncidium Alliance
