CEO MESSAGE

DEAR MEMBERAutumn brings change and certainly it’s a time of positive changes at your Club. We are introducing new plans to improve services to Members and I’m pleased that many of these are now in place to make your visits to the Club more enjoyable. You can find details of our improvements on page 11 of this magazine. The highlights are the new parking directional system at Woden, an online restaurant reservation system at Yacht and free wi-fi across all our venues. There is plenty more to come in the near future too.

I hope Members can make it to our Future Health Club information session on March 22. Details of the session are on page 19.

The kick off to footy seasonis just around the corner. We wish good luck to the many football clubs across the codes that we sponsor, particularly Wests, Tuggeranong Hawks, Royals and our newest partner Woden Weston Football Club. We look forward to welcoming players, supporters, friends and family at all our venues throughout the season.

It’s also an exciting time for horse racing fans with the Grand Finals of Australian Racing, The Championships, being on in Sydney on April 2 and 9. For our TAB regulars, we’ve got tickets to be won to experience the excitement of The Championships in 2016.

Finally, I encourage all Members to participate in our unique Community Rewards program by choosing a charity or community group to support. We donate 10 cents in every dollar you spend on food and beverages to your nominated group. Over 40 community groups are registered and the front cover of the magazine gives you just a hint of the broad range of great schools, sporting clubs, charities and groups you can choose from. To sign up as a supporter of any group simply drop by reception at any of our venues or visit our Community Rewards Program page at our website, cscc.com.au.

Members have a unique opportunity to give back to the community simply by dining and drinking at your favourite club venue.

Under the innovative Community Rewards Program, 10 cents in every dollar members spend on food and beverages in the club will go towards their nominated community group.

The program started in 2015 and more than 30 groups have already received much needed support.

Membership Manager Lauren O’Hara said those now involved include a wide range of community groups such as sporting clubs, dance and scout groups, school parents associations and charities such as Karinya House and the Royal Society for the Blind Canberra.

“The program allows our members to choose which community groups they support and really engage with them at a grassroots level,” she said.

grandchildren that attend Garran Primary, or have friends that have kids there.”

Royal Society for the Blind Canberra coordinator Rebecca Rawlinson said the program provided positive connections between Canberra’s not-for-profits and the business sector.

“RSB Canberra is absolutely thrilled to be involved in such a grassroots community program,” she said.

“More than ever we’re in need of community support and to get this as well as the opportunity to spread awareness about vision loss, as well as our specialist services, it’s amazing.”

Members can nominate their favourite community group from the list below by visiting reception at any venue or by going to our website www.cscc.com.au/rewards.

COMMUNITY REWARDS

“What’s really wonderful about the program is that it also supports smaller groups that may not otherwise receive a lot of funding.”

Wests Junior Rugby Club spokesman Keven Whitton said the sporting group was delighted to be part of the program.

“We have earned in excess of $4800 so far, which we have used to purchase playing uniforms,” he said.

“This has helped enormously in keeping the cost of playing rugby affordable for all of our members.”

Sue-Ann O’Rourke, mother of Jack and Lily, told Members’ Magazine: “Our family loves going to Henry’s and it’s now even better knowing that every time we go that Garran Primary School benefits through the Community Rewards Program.”

“I urge members to join the program, especially if they have children or

The Club’s annual Chef’s Signature Dinner is being held at Woden on Friday 18 March at 6.30pm. It’s the highlight of the year for the Club as our four executive chefs join forces for one night only and showcase their talents. At the time of writing less than 30 tickets remain for the event so be quick to secure your spot at this gastronomic extravaganza.

Anurag Gautam, our Executive Chef from Tuggeranong, who will be preparing the main course said, “This year I have decided to do a mutton dish which may not sound fashionable but is having a huge comeback in Europe and even has Prince Charles and top gourmands backing! The Prince has been attending and hosting a lot of dinners to revive this beautiful meat which has a lot more flavour and is more environmentally friendly than other cuts.

The mutton dish I have decided to cook is one of my favourites and combines my love of old steam locomotives, trains and travelling at a leisurely pace. It is a very old dish which can be traced to the 19th century when the British were building the railways on the sub-continent and wanted to have a simple roast, and their chefs and cooks couldn’t understand why somebody would eat any roast without adding some spices! The Railway officers loved the spicy roasted mutton so much that they had it as a celebration main course when the first railway line in the Himalaya Mountains was completed. I’m looking forward to sharing this with our Members on March 18th.”

The fine food will be matched with wines from Arras, Eddystone Point, Amberley, and Peter Lehmann. The highly regarded

also be using these tablets to take drinks orders at your table so you can sit back and enjoy the company of friends and family.

The Yacht Club has also become the first bar or restaurant in Canberra to launch ‘Clipp’, a clever new app that lets you establish and pay for a bar tab with your smartphone. Members will shortly also be able to book a table at the Yacht Club on our website using an online reservation system.

By the end of March free WI-FI will also be available to patrons at all venues, which will be especially beneficial to corporate, functions and events clientele as well as members who want to connect whilst enjoying Club facilities.

TECHNOLOGY

New technology being introduced at your Club will see members spending less effort on time consuming tasks. From parking your car to ordering your meal and accessing the internet, things are getting easier at the club with a focus on giving members and guests more time to spend enjoying themselves.

Club CEO Ian Mackay said a car park directional system, called Park Assist, has been installed at Woden with rave reviews from members. It lets members easily find available parking spots in the multi-level car park.

“We are putting things in place so that we can give members more time to enjoy themselves and less time being wasted on things such as looking for a parking space,” he said.

An easy order kiosk will also be up and running in March at the Woden venue and Snapper so you can skip the queue and order your meal quickly at these electronic kiosks.

Another improvement about to be launched is the ability to order your drinks at the same counter when placing your meal order. The Clubs investment in a new smarter till system has enabled these type of customer friendly time saving enhancements to be implemented.

Mr Mackay said a new “queue busting” service would also be implemented in March where staff using handheld tablets would hit the floor at all venues whenever a line to order became too long. They will

THE PIONEER CLUBIf you like to meet new people, socialise and feel connected to the Canberra Southern Cross Club then the affiliated Pioneer Club is for you.

The Pioneer Club is welcoming new members to come and enjoy mingling with like minded people at its relaxed monthly luncheons.

Established in 1996 -1997, the Pioneer Club was set up by founding Canberra Southern Cross Club board members as they approached retirement as a way to ensure they kept in regular contact. Canberra Southern Cross Club members were invited to join and keep alive the friendships they had made through the club.

Pioneer Club convener Adrian Caddy said the only requirement for membership is to be a member of the Canberra Southern Cross Club.

He said the beauty of the luncheons is that they are simple affairs.

“It’s very low key,” Mr Caddy said.

“It’s an opportunity for people to sit down and have a quiet lunch in a nice friendly atmosphere and talk to each other.

Mr Caddy said the luncheon is held on the last Friday of every month from February to November with the Woden club usually hosting the event.

“Once or twice a year we also venture out on the MV Southern Cross for a pleasant two-hour cruise on Lake Burley Griffin,” he said.

Mr Caddy said the informal nature of the club, which is free of fees and obligations, had made it very popular, with about 60 members attending each month.

Members range from those in their 50s to some in their 90s and come from varying backgrounds.

Frank Boyle, a former CSCC director for 17 years, was one of the Pioneer Club’s founding members and still loves attending today.

“It’s a nice gathering of older members to socialise and enjoy a meal together,” he said.

“It’s an opportunity to meet like-minded people in about the same age group.”

To join the Pioneer Club or for more information contact Adrian Caddy at [email protected]
