CEO MESSAGE

DEAR MEMBERThe festive season is when the Club really shines. We look forward to hosting thousands of people across our venues on Christmas Day, helping families celebrate our most special day.

It’s great news that Snapper on the Lake at the Yacht Club will also open on Christmas Day from 11am to 3pm for those seeking a more casual lunch or snack.

One of the special things your Club does each year is the complimentary Pensioners’ Christmas Party. This year on December 1st we’ve extended the event to include Jamison and Tuggeranong as well as Woden. The Woden event is already sold out but some tickets remain for Jamison and Tuggeranong. Please call the venue direct for details.

We’ve also got some bumper promotions on for Summer including the popular Countdown to Christmas, as well as the great value 5:1 points redemption offer for food and beverage in January and our ‘Get Cruisy’ promotion offering free cruises on the MV Southern Cross. For families we’re delighted to bring back free movie screenings in the lead up to Christmas.

For our health club members it’s great news we are now open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as the first step towards our exciting new future which you can read about on page 14 of this magazine.

In November we farewelled a Club legend, Gus Sorrentino, who had been with us since 1980 including managing Tuggeranong since 2001. We’re pleased to welcome Huw Bennet to the Club who will be continuing the ‘service with a smile’ tradition made famous by Gus at Tuggerannong.

Finally a huge congratulations to the team at our Yacht Club venue for winning Best Small Club of the Year and Best Restaurant in the 2015 ClubsACT Awards. Our chef team of Anurag and Bradley from Tuggeranong also won the Battle of the Chefs competition and we were also thrilled to take home the Community Partner award.

May you and your family have a safe and happy Christmas.

RELAX AND ENJOY CHRISTMAS WITH US!It’s time to take the stress and mess out of Christmas Day lunch and celebrate in style at the Canberra Southern Cross Club.

The club is inviting members and guests to ditch the pile of dishes at home and let us do all the hard work while you relax and enjoy our tradition of celebrating the festive season.

We have a range of delicious Christmas events at each of our venues featuring everything from traditional fare such as roast turkey to classic Australian seafood including prawns and oysters.

Woden venue manager Matt Walshe said Christmas Day was a special time at the club.

“We have our decorations up, the tables are laid out beautifully, we play Christmas music and there is a real festive feel,” he said.

“Families and friends get together and have a wonderful time at the club and we really look after you.

“The best part is you don’t have to do the dishes.”

At the Golden Grille patrons can dine on seafood and salad, traditional roast meats and vegetables and Christmas pudding with brandy custard.

In the Corinna Ballroom the scrumptious menu includes king prawns, carved loin of pork with a mustard crust, a selection of cakes and pastries and a lolly buffet.

Yacht Club venue manager Simon Plummer said many customers had made Christmas dinner at the club a tradition and people should book quickly to avoid missing out.

“Christmas at the club is a real treat, there’s a party atmosphere, a real family feel and everyone always has a good time,” he said.

“The food is a standout, as is the friendliness of the staff.”

At the Yacht Club Restaurant the menu offers hot smoked rainbow trout, prosciutto wrapped turkey breast and mango mousse.

Aboard the M.V. Southern Cross you can enjoy dill marinated prawn salad, blueberry honey glazed leg ham and bitter chocolate and raspberry tart.

In the Yacht Club Marquee the buffet includes jumbo pacific oysters, salads, slow cooked turkey breast and mince pies and yule logs.

Tuggeranong’s Anurag Gautam said the club was like a “second home” for many people at Christmas.

“It’s a home away from home for a lot of members and they enjoy Christmas Day here every year because the food is good,” he said.

“The people that attend really make the day as they are all in such a happy, festive mood and so are the staff.”

At the Valley Grille the menu includes smoked chicken, prawns, roast turkey and honey glazed ham and Christmas pudding.

In the Peppercress Restaurant the festive menu includes kingfish, salmon and oysters, roast turkey breast and artisan cheeses.

Jamison venue manager Brian Dobson said Christmas time was always a joyous occasion at the club and on Christmas Day the addition of excited children made it even more so.

“Christmas is for children and they always love the visit from Santa and the lolly bag that he gives them,” he said.

“We have people that come to the club every year for Christmas and we love to welcome them back along with those that might be coming here for the first time.

“It’s a lovely day and it means you don’t have to worry about all the mess at home.”

At the Cornerstone Brasserie the menu includes pumpkin soup, prawns, oysters, roast meats and vegetables and fruit pavlova.

A Henry’s Meal + a sweet treat just

MORE fun and increased value for families will arrive at the Canberra Southern Cross Club in time to celebrate the festive season.

From early December Henry’s Family Restaurants at Woden, Tuggeranong and Jamison will feature a festive season kids menu.

This means your mini food critic can tuck into the spirit of the season and try our special Turkey Sliders or perhaps a Santa Pancake for dessert.

CEO Ian Mackay said the new Henrys kids menu had been extremely popular since its launch in August and the festive season additions followed the tradition of making Henry’s a fun, tasty and relaxing place for families to dine.

“The festive season Henry’s menu is a great way to celebrate Christmas with our youngest customers,” he said.

“Parents have told us they love the new-look menu that folds out into an activities page and the value that Henry’s combo meal deals offer,” he said.

“For just $8.90 you can buy a main meal and then add a combo of a drink, a dessert or games, for $2 each. If you buy the lot it’s just $14.90 for a great meal and a fun night out for the kids”.

“It gives parents a chance to relax and enjoy their meal as well.”

In addition to the Club’s regular free kid’s face painting offer, which is available at Jamison, Tuggeranong and Woden from 6pm-8pm on Fridays throughout December, families can also enjoy all the fun and entertainment of a clown performing at Woden venue on Thursday evenings.

There’s also free movies for families to enjoy together across all of the Club’s venues in the lead up to Christmas.

The movies with screening times and locations are listed on the facing page.

“We want to make sure families can enjoy the safe and happy environment of the Canberra Southern Cross Club venues,” Mr Mackay said.

Snapper by the lake is your perfect summer venue with great food, music and family fun.

Snapper enjoys a supreme warm weather setting offering the perfect combination of fresh fish and chips, picturesque views and rolling green lawns for the children to play on.

Yacht Club General Manger Simon Plummer said the popular live music on the lawns, introduced last Summer, is back every Saturday and Sunday from 1pm to 5pm.

Also new for this Summer is the Grant Burge pop-up bar. The bar means less queuing for a refreshing beverage while enjoying the location.

“It’s a relaxed, fun place the whole family can come down and enjoy.

“You can have really good fish and chips, mum and dad can enjoy a beverage, listen to the music and kids can play on the lawn on the shore of the lake.”

A new meal deal had also been introduced for Summer featuring a $2.50 regular soft drink with every main meal purchased.

In a first, Snapper will be open from 11am until 3pm on Christmas Day for families and friends wanting to enjoy a relaxed Christmas lunch or snack by the Lake.

The Southern Cross Health Club in Woden first opened its doors 20 years ago when stonewashed denim and sweat bands were still in fashion. It has since introduced Canberra’s first circuit for older members, expanded to become Canberra’s largest health club, won numerous awards and earned a gold health club rating with Fitness Australia.

It has been an important part of your club’s past. And with the exciting plans that are beginning to take shape, it will be a vital part of the club’s future.

“The Canberra Southern Cross Club has chosen to grow in the health and wellness area, as part of diversifying and meeting members’ needs. We now have the perfect opportunity to do this in Woden. Our Irving Street Health Club lease expires in a couple of years, so it makes great sense to develop a fantastic purpose-built facility to move into at that time,” said General Manager, Mark La Brooy.

The future Health Club will be part of a new health and wellness centre, planned to open in early 2018 on the nearby section 79 (the old Pitch and Putt site).

“Early plans are for a modern multi-storey centre that will offer even more choice of services.”

Initial ideas include an early learning childcare centre and a whole foods/wellness café on the ground level, with other levels housing a 24-hour gym, group exercise and training rooms, and allied health professionals such as physiotherapy and remedial massage. Gym equipment will be state-of-the art and there will be free member parking.

“We’re imagining everything you need to review, revive, rebalance and recharge—everything for a healthier, better future—all under one roof. This will be a first for Canberra and a unique development for the southside.”

At this stage, plans are still being developed and member and community consultation is underway, kicking off with two special Health Club member information sessions held on 5 November.

The response has been positive, including the following comment from Linda, a Health Club member since 2009:

to make sure we provide what our members want so that together we create Canberra’s best new health and wellness centre”.

FUTURE OF THE HEALTH CLUB

“I am delighted that you are planning a purpose-built facility and that your plan is to remain in Woden…I liked your idea of more integrated health services—including physio and other allied health professionals—as well as a coffee shop or even other services like a health food store… A ‘one stop location’ for those things would appeal to me…Thanks for engaging and involving us. I look forward to hearing of the plans as you move forward”.

Mark La Brooy said the club is genuinely interested in members’ views, “We want

GARAGE SALEIF you love hunting for a bargain or have always longed to take a piece of the Canberra Southern Cross Club home with you, the club’s inaugural Garage Sale will allow you to do both.

Overflowing storerooms at the club’s four venues have been emptied and their treasures will go on sale at the Woden venue from Friday, December 4.

Every purchase will help make someone’s Christmas a little bit happier, with funds raised going towards the club hosted Pensioners’ Christmas Parties.

Woden Venue Manager Matt Walshe said the sale would feature everything from practical items, such as crockery, to more eccentric bits and pieces, including metal artwork.

“One man’s trash is certainly another man’s treasure,” Mr Walshe said.

“It’s a great opportunity to come and have a look and see what we’ve pulled out of storage, you might even be able to grab a few Christmas presents.

“We will have everything from crockery and glassware to furniture, unique vases and ornaments, artwork, wall hangings, decorative copper pots and much more.”

Mr Walshe said items would be for sale for as little as $1.

“These items have been gathering dust and this is an opportunity for members and guests to take them home at bargain basement prices,” he said.

“Members may even recognise some of the items from their time in the club and this is their chance to take a trinket from the club home.”

The Garage Sale will run from 9am to 6pm daily for two weeks, unless sold out.
