In September MCC presented its highest honor to the organizations that collaborated on the U.P. Mobile Mammography Event, held at the Hannahville and Bay Mills Indian Communities in May, 2019. This event planned with and supported by ITCMI and Spectrum Health Betty Ford Breast Cancer Services of Grand Rapids provided 99 no-cost mammograms for both insured and uninsured women. MCC presents Spirit of Collaboration Award The ITCM hosted its annual Three Fires Comprehensive Cancer Consortium and State Cancer Project Meeting Dec. 4, 2019 in Gaylord. Representatives from seven tribes participated to share progress and to collaborate on challenges and solutions for their current work plans.

The Inter-Tribal Council of MI supports cancer prevention and control programs with social media to distribute health information and education materials.

ABOUT: The ITCM Cancer Prevention and Control Programs work in a spirit of collaboration, addressing cancer related health dispariites among Michigan’s American Indian Population through policy, systems, and environmental change strategies.

Electronic Health Records

Tribes are making changes in their electronic health record systems and use a variety of health systems such as iCare, Epic, and Greenway. In order to capture necessary health programming data, ITCMI contracted expert health technology improvement TA through Health IQ and Mr. James Spillane. Continuous Quality Improvement projects will benefit as tribes work towards meaningful use, enhanced provider reminders, improved documentation of patient health data, and increased referrals.

RURAL TRIBAL PROVIDER – CANCER SURVIVORSHIP WORKSHOP – June 2020 In collaboration with ITCMI, the George Washington Cancer Institute will host 2 Primary Care Provider Workshops: June 2, 2020 (Hannahville) and June 3, 2020 (Lower/Mid-Michigan). The workshops are designed specifically for Tribal providers and primary care teams who serve American Indian populations. The workshops will educate about the Patient Center Research Outcomes Institute 2019 Advancing Patient Centered Survivorship Care Toolkit - with an emphasis on cancer survivors in a rural primary care setting. Lunch will be served along with CME, CNE, CHES, continuing education credits will be provided at no cost for all attendees.

MPH Graduate Student Support

ITCM selected two Master of Public Health students from Grand Valley State University to support Comprehensive Cancer and Breast & Cervical Cancer programs. Sarah Keller will work with Breast Cancer Awareness social media with ITCM- Beth Sieloff, and Kylie Szymanski will work with tobacco cessation media with ITCM’s Cathy Edgerly and Mike Willette.
