What is an oncogene?

an oncogene is any gene that encodes a

protein able to transform cells in culture or

to induce cancer in animals, including v-onc

and c-onc. Most oncogenes are mutant

forms of normal genes (proto-onc) involved

in the control of cell growth or division.
