This year is the Sesquicentenary (150th Birthday) for Candelo Public School and planning for a huge celebration is well underway. Parent initiatives are welcome, please see us to offer your contribution. The next meeting is Wednesday 6 February at 5.00pm (see Candelo PS 150 Year Facebook). P&C Meeting will follow on at 6.30 – 7.30pm and this is a fabulous forum to support the school.

During the holidays there was a hive of activity – Share our Space initiative; painting and high-vis strips; paved lunch area; Aboriginal totems in the native garden; Candelo Show entries and 150 Year exhibit; teachers and staff busily prepared for the start of the new year. To support schools engaging with their communities the Department’s website contains the School Community Charter webpage. On this page you will find information about what our schools provide, how we all play a part. We will continue to subscribe to School Stream (get the app) and Facebook, because they are our means of communicating with parents in the case of an emergency. Our current School Plan is focused on Parent Engagement in Learning - How can we make it work for you? Wednesday 13 February we are keen to meet our parents to share and learn about the following topics:

Review what parents want for children as they attend Candelo Public School (CPS)

What is valued at CPS?

What lessons have we learned from the past to inform the future (with the 150 year focus)?

We are very keen to continue our goal to actively engage with our school community. Students, parents and staff working together to achieve quality teaching, quality learning and active community engagement in learning. We all want children having a great education, learning to love learning and being a great citizen, successful and happy.

All families are invited, so we do hope that a wonderful group of parents and community members are able to attend: Wednesday 13 February - 3.30 afternoon tea in the gallery area/Admin building; 4.00 Forum and then time with your child’s teacher. We will seek to provide some babysitting options to enable parents to attend the sessions… Stay in touch on Facebook. The P&C BBQ will again run at the Candelo Markets this Sunday. If you would like to participate in any of our P&C events – please contact the School. Kindergarten will participate in Best Start program with Miss Watchirs next Monday and Thursday. It is a great opportunity for her to meet one on one with each child to see where they are now as they demonstrate their literacy and numeracy skills and then the programs can be catered to meet their needs to grow their learning. Mrs Campbell will take class K/1 on these days to enable the one on one time to take place.

- Suezanne Bourke, Principal Candelo PS School Photos will be held on Wednesday 20 February. Once again Angie High, a local photographer, will be taking these photos. Please ensure that you return your photo envelopes and that your child dresses in full school uniform, black shoes and has hair groomed on the day. We hope to use the old school desk for the photos for the 150th year photo. Three way meetings with parents, students and teachers are planned for Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 February. Times before, during and after school can be booked. Parents are asked to manage interview times at www.schoolinterviews.com.au to fill in a time using the code 3b7mj. An email will be sent to parents after they log their date. If you do not have access to the Internet please come into school or ring the school office and Megan will add you to the booking schedule. Please bring the completed goal setting sheet, which will be sent home with your child, to the meeting. It is important that parents and student attend the meeting. (NB. It is optional for Kindergarten parents to bring their child to the interview with Miss Watchirs.) Term 1 Assembly will be held on Friday 1 March at 9.10 in the Library. Year 6 will be inducted into the School Parliament and they will present a summary of their portfolio. Kindergarten students will enjoy their first formal occasion. We encourage parents and grandparents to join us for the Assembly celebration.

Children will walk to the pool at the mid-lunch bell and return in time for the end of the day. Please remember entrance to the pool is $3, unless you hold a season pass.

The Zone Swimming Carnival will be held on Thursday 21 February at Candelo Pool. Once again the P&C will be holding a Tea/Coffee/Cake Stall. Please let Megan in the school office know if you are able to assist.

The Candelo School Swimming Carnival will be held on Friday 8 February. Please encourage all children Years

The Small School Swimming Carnival will be held on Thursday 14 February from 9.30. Candelo hosts this carnival and if we could ask parents to provide fruit plates, cakes and biscuits for sale. We will need parent helpers for the cake stall during the day as well as helpers to time the events. Please see Mrs Bourke. Once again we would encourage all children Years 2 to 6 to participate in the events or novelty events. We will be after the title so participation is the key! Children will learn about effort to strive for personal best.

Swimming training at the pool for children swimming 50m laps will be held on Tuesdays 5/2 and 12/2 from 3.30 to 4.15. Please bring swimming bag to school so that children can walk with us across to the pool from school. Parents are asked to collect the children from the pool.

Class 2M News: Welcome back everyone, I hope you had a fun and relaxing summer!

We are very lucky to have two new students, Kelsey and Zara, in our classroom. Please say hello to them and their families and show them how fantastic our community is!

This week we are brainstorming what a quality classroom looks like, learning all our routines for efficient learning, plus playing some fun games to get to know each other.

You will find your child’s home reading folder in their bag today. Please have a look, as there is some extra information in there about reading at home and changing readers at school.

Thank you!

Naomi Moore

Class 3BJ News:

Both Mrs Johnson and myself are very much looking forward to working with the children in the multi age senior class. A focus on individual student needs and cooperative learning to bring the students together in a stimulating learning environment is our plan!

We are a collaborative professional team who shares responsibility for all students in the different levels. This is a huge advantage for all children’s learning and social emotional development. When we have multi-age classes we have a greater even spread of behaviour, gender, ability, independence, special learning needs, etc. Already the children have demonstrated their well developed social skills and some habits of learning that are ensuring that they are able to work and learn so well together.

Mrs Johnson will teach Science across the school and we will be working towards Project Based Learning together. Remember we will be working with you and together we will all make the difference! Whatever class your child is in is usually ok with the children – we work hard to make sure we know, value and care for every child.

Suezanne Bourke

Some of the work carried out over the holidays included

paving, high-vis painting and Aboriginal Totems added.
