March 2014

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for the interest you have shown in becoming Headteacher of our school.

This is an exceptional opportunity to lead Wilmslow High School through the next stage of its evolution and I do hope that this Information Pack and the school website give you a deep understanding of our ethos, culture and vision.

Wilmslow High School is a community school that enjoys an excellent working relationship with the Local Authority and we have taken a very deliberate decision not to convert to an Academy at this time; however we keep this decision under regular review. The current school population of 1994 students including 490 in the Sixth Form (Jan 2014) is expected to grow substantially over the coming years as a result of the pending local plan that includes proposals for significant housing development coupled with the current expansion of some feeder primaries. New build accommodation will be required very soon.

In common with many other schools in many other authorities we have a major concern about the progress of our pupil premium students and are working hard to ‘close the gap’ whilst at the same time further improving outcomes for all students.

School sport is an important part of school life at Wilmslow as is an extensive programme of ‘Extra’ activities before and after school. Our students undertake many school visits at home and abroad each year and you will be a keen supporter of these programmes.

We are looking for a strong and inspirational leader to build on the achievements of our excellent and highly respected current Head who we are very sorry to be losing. Whether you are an existing Head looking for new and exciting challenges, or a first time Head looking to establish yourself as an educational champion, you will have a proven track record of successful leadership gained over the past six or more years in a 900+ (11-16) student school, or larger if including a Sixth Form.

You will be working with an established and experienced SLT and a governing body that craves success and holds the school rigorously to account in pursuit of excellence for our young people.

If you feel that you may be the right person to fill this position of Headteacher at Wilmslow High School the governing body looks forward to receiving your application for our consideration. You are welcome to come and visit us at one or more of the open sessions where you will be shown around by the students and have an opportunity to meet with members of staff and governors. Full details are contained on the back page of this Information Pack and in the original advertisement.

Yours sincerely

David Bennett

Wilmslow High School, an 11-18 comprehensive, is the only state secondary school in the town. It enjoys good relationships with the partner primary schools in Wilmslow, Handforth and Alderley Edge, from where the majority of our students come. The school is heavily oversubscribed in both the 11 – 16 sector and the Sixth Form, which has increased in size with more and more students from outside the town and from the independent sector seeking places.

The school was designated as a specialist Sports College on 1st September 2003 and gained re-designation in 2008. The specialism now includes sports and the arts. Although specialism is no longer adequately funded, our specialism is at the heart of the school’s culture and ethos in raising participation, expectations and standards and underpins the school’s vision of continuing improvement in all areas of its operation.

On achieving High Performing School Status (HPSS) in 2008 Wilmslow bid for, and gained, second specialism in applied learning from September 2009. Funding for this specialism has now been withdrawn: nevertheless the school continues to offer skills-based personalised learning opportunities to students across the ability range.

Wilmslow High School is also a school committed to nurturing talent of all kinds, with Ofsted commenting in 2013 that students “who have high attainment on entry to the school achieve very well”.

School Culture

The school works hard to maintain a culture in which learning is pre-eminent, which is ultra-professional and efficient, which is inclusive and participatory, which is prepared to undertake radical change in the pursuit of genuine quality, which is never complacent in aiming to improve and which acts in partnership with the community to promote appropriate values, individual growth and the concept of a ‘common good’.

It is based on mutual respect for all staff and students with all people of equal value in Wilmslow High School and its wider community. The school recognises its responsibilities within the Equality Act 2010.

Inclusive, supportive, inspiring

About the role

Governors and staff are looking for a leader who shares our values and ethos. A forward thinking, strategic and innovative leader, you will have a proven track record of driving up standards as an aspiring or current Headteacher. You will bring the skills required to strategically oversee leading and managing change, nurturing talent and developing productive relationships both inside and beyond our growing learning community. Above all, you will share our commitment and determination to providing a learning environment, which develops the potential and abilities of each and every one of our young people.

The school has developed its accomodation over time:

▪ Established September 1984 by the merger of the three town schools to form a single comprehensive school on three sites before consolidating on today’s site following a major development programme in March 1994.

▪ A major extension (the Pavilion), completed September 2004, brought enhanced Sixth Form, sport, history, business studies and ICT facilities and design and technology, science and a Student Services base elsewhere.

▪ Other facilities also included two drama studios, a sports hall, gymnasium, dance studio, fitness suite, a music suite, three food technology areas, a learning resource centre and ICT suites.

▪ Additional facilities are provided as far as possible annually with September 2006 seeing a refurbished ‘High Options’ refreshment area emphasizing the link between healthy eating and sport. In 2007 a new Learning Zone for Languages, new Astroturf, additional car parking and new drainage (to improve the quality of some sports fields) were also completed.

▪ A small Astroturf and the ‘Olympic Hall’ sports hall were completed summer 2010 and in 2011, further internal refurbishment was undertaken. Between 2012 and 2013, 12 out of 14 science laboratories were refurbished and summer 2013 saw a new fitness suite installed.

▪ The Pavilion extension opened in November 2013 as a new ‘learning centre’ providing impressive facilities for students with learning support needs, a suite of rooms relating to the Inclusion agenda, further facilities for sixth form study and another Costa café.

▪ Extensive playing fields include the floodlit Astroturf. Close by are the local Leisure Centre and swimming pool. We believe a ‘positive learning environment’ is an important factor in encouraging students to learn and there is an ongoing commitment to further improve the site.

▪ Planned housing growth will necessitate new build to accommodate an increase in student numbers in the near future.

The House system to which all staff and students belong is led and managed by four Heads of House and supported by Student Managers.

Staff contribute to the monitoring, guidance and support programmes and the extra-curricular life of their House. They are expected to give their full and consistent support to the maintenance of high standards of behaviour, discipline, appearance and uniform, upon which a high priority is placed.

Central to the school ethos is the concept of ‘The Wilmslow Way’ which provides a support and expectations structure for students with ‘good behaviour leading to pride leading to success’ as the central theme.

Wilmslow High’s oversubscribed Sixth Form, one of the largest in the North of England, offers an academic rather than vocational curriculum and attracts students from other local schools.

Offering a structured and supportive approach provides students with the guidance needed to achieve their full potential. 56% of A Level results were awarded at A or B grade in 2013. We also offer the BTEC National Diploma in Sport, with other vocational courses coming online shortly.

Students’ study reflects their individual interests and aspirations. We offer an extensive range of A Level courses; most students study four AS subjects in Year 12 and then choose to pursue three of these at A2 Level.

We are piloting “Learn Xtra,” a range of curriculum enhancement opportunities that enables students to opt into academic enrichment in addition to the core

Sixth Form curriculum programme. Qualifications include the Extended Project Qualification and AQA Baccalaureate, together with AS levels designed to give more ‘breadth’ to the curriculum, such as AS General Studies and AS Critical Thinking.

Building an unbeatable CV or strong UCAS application is about so much more than purely academic qualities. The enrichment programme is designed to sit alongside academic studies and really “make the difference”.

We are very proud of our Sixth Form and the contribution it makes to the life of the school. We have high expectations of our students, who are expected to act as role models for the rest of the school community.

Our aim is to ensure that students leave the Sixth Form as confident, happy and independent young adults, fully prepared for the challenges of life ahead.

“ Wilmslow High School sixth form provides an

outstanding range of extra-curricular and enrichment

opportunities”

The Sixth Form

As a specialist sports college we have an exceptional sporting pedigree. Students who are keen to pursue sport at a competitive level can represent the school at a range of sports including rugby, football, hockey, netball, tennis, badminton and cricket. Our skilled and committed team of staff are dedicated to training students to compete at the highest level.

Recent successes have included:

2013 - Senior Rugby Daily Mail Quarter Finalists; County U18s Hockey Champions, Indoors and Outdoors; County U18s Netball Champions and National Schools Finalists; Senior Football U18 County Cup Finalists and U18 Macclesfield and District Cup Champions; U19 Boys National Tennis Semi Finalists; U19 Boys and Girls North West Trampolining Champions 2013/14, U19 Boys North Champions 2013/14.

2014 - Senior Rugby Nat West Vase Quarter Finalists; U19 Boys (Trampolining) competing in National Finals (March 2014).

The LS team provides for students with SEN and provides specialist teaching and support on a small group basis: 53 students currently receive ‘high needs top up’ funding.

The LS team’s operation encompasses specialist provision for students with hearing impairment.

The school leads on a LA initiative relating to provision for autistic students and a member of staff has responsibility for this resourced provision supported by a number of LSAs.

Learning Support

The school has over 250 full and part-time staff, including teachers, learning support assistants, site, secretarial and administrative staff, midday supervisors, technicians and learning resource centre staff.

The SLT (or Leadership Group) comprises the Head and Deputy Head teacher, four Assistant Head teachers (Directors of Student Services, Learning and Assessment, Personnel and Community). The Curriculum Team Leaders English and mathematics, Business Manager and Information Systems Manager are part of the extended Leadership Group.

The teaching and learning structure is based around four ‘Curriculum Organisers’;

▪ Multi-Literacies (English, Maths, MFL, ICT)▪ Empiric Enquiry (Science, Design and Technology)▪ Individual Development (Music, Art, Drama, Dance, Physical Education, PHSCE)▪ Global Communities (Geography, History, Business Studies and Enterprise, Social Studies, including Religious Education).

A member of the Leadership Group is attached to each ‘Organiser’ to have a ‘light touch’ oversight although leadership and management responsibilities rest with Curriculum Team Leaders and Team Leaders. There are regular ‘Organiser’, Curriculum, Student Services and Leadership Group Team meetings.

The Business Manager, who is responsible for finance, buildings and administration, manages the support staff structure with clerical and administrative support provided for curriculum areas.

A member of the support staff undertakes the role of Examination and Assessment Officer.

An Information Systems Support team is responsible for all aspects of information services from the operation of ICT systems to support for staff and students.

A Learning and Assessment team provides a full range of information including data analysis, targets and monitoring outcomes, to enable students to achieve of their best.

A mix of teaching and support staff facilitates Sports College developments.

Staffing structure

“There is no room for complacency as all members

of the whole-school team are committed to

further development and continuous improvement. This ensures that students’

needs are fully met, both academically and

personally. “Ofsted 2011

The school places particular emphasis on PHSCE Education and operates a system that links curricular activity, tutorial activity and five ‘PHSCE’/ Applied Learning Days.

‘PHSCE’

Professional developmentThe school runs induction programmes for new staff and for newly qualified teachers. It is extensively involved in initial teacher training through the PGCE and Teach First routes and from this year is a lead school in the School Direct programme.

The school participates in the National College of Teaching and Leadership’s range of middle management and senior management programmes. In addition, the school has developed an internal programme for aspiring middle managers, ‘Developing Leadership’, which each year is followed by a cohort of both teaching and support staff.

Targeted mentoring is also provided for teaching colleagues eligible to apply for pay progression. The school’s appraisal scheme for teachers is integrated with career point progression.

Performance management systems for all support staff are built in to the CPD structure. Support is given to the continuing professional development needs of individual colleagues and teams through a range of internal and external CPD provision.

Extra-curricular activitiesWide ranging from educational visits to music, drama, sport and academic clubs and societies, an eclectic ‘enrichment’ programme for the Sixth Form, Sports and Arts ‘Xtra’ programmes, ‘Xtra Xtra, drama and music productions offer opportunity to all.

The school puts much emphasis on developing healthy lifestyles with a balance of studies and different activities and visits for all students.

Students’ participation enhances their overall achievement and desire to aim high: as a result students are now gaining success in many national competitions and events across the curriculum.

“Student attainment in GCSE science courses is

very high and rising year by year. Sixth form attainment

is also very high and well above the national average

overall in science” Ofsted 2012

Page 14: Candidate information - Wilmslow High School€¦ · hjhjhjh. March 2014 Dear Applicant, Thank you for the interest you have shown in becoming Headteacher of our school. This is an

This is an important aspect of the school’s operation and is very much an area of growth.

The school has developed strong links with the local community and major local employers: the Assistant Head teacher, Director of Community and Head teacher are members of the Wilmslow Business Group and are regular attenders at business and community events. Members of the business community support the PHSCE programme (for example, provide interview practice for Year 11 students and provide support, advice and guidance for ‘Dragons’ Den, Young Enterprise et al activities) and provide work placements for our students.

Currently all Year 10 students

have a one-week work experience placement, with further course related work experience in Year 12.

The school’s P.T.A. organises a wide range of social, educational and fund-raising activities with different groups of parents (sports, arts, general) and supports many school events, particularly the arts programme.

The Assistant Head teacher, Director of Community and the Head teacher attend the half termly meetings and are involved in many of the PTA activities.

Community involvement and links are also manifest in student placements, musical concerts, and sports festivals that include many of the local primary schools and

wide-ranging activity in support of local charities.

The school works in partnership with community groups and business links in providing particular events, for example, the annual Wilmslow Show which is a major community event and the bi-annual fashion show.

The school is used extensively outside the core day during weekends and the holidays. This aspect of the school’s operation is managed within ‘High Leisure’ which manages the school facilities for the benefit of the community as a whole.

The school is also a centre for Adult Education which is due to be extended further.

Wilmslow High School has developed significantly over recent years and now enjoys an enviable reputation.

The Section 5 full Ofsted Inspection Report of April 2011 described the school as ‘outstanding’ in 29 of the 31 categories.

An Ofsted subject inspection in November 2012 found science to be ‘outstanding’ in all categories.

A further Section 5 full OFSTED inspection in October 2013, under a different framework, found behaviour and safety of students and leadership and management to be outstanding, and quality of teaching/ achievement of students to be good.

In particular the report noted:

▪ The drive, passion and determination of the Head teacher and her team to have a very positive impact on the school’s work

▪ Students’ behaviour and safety are outstanding. They are proud of their school and show high levels of respect for staff and each other

▪ Teachers are knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Almost all lessons include interesting activities and experiences that particularly challenge the most- able students

▪ There is a rich variety of extra- curricular activities, most notably sport, but other activities such

as music and drama and residential trips and visits ▪ The memorable experiences of students are frequently a catalyst to their success in other parts of the curriculum

▪ The school and Head teacher make a significant contribution to school improvement in the locality and collaborate with other schools to share good practice.

One area for further improvement was identified as:

▪ The achievement of students for whom the pupil premium provides support and for those supported at school action plus is not as good as that of other students.

Wilmslow, a pleasant commuter town with a population of about 30,000, is situated on the southern outskirts of Manchester. It is within easy reach of attractive countryside both locally and in the nearby Peak District.

The town is well served by the motorway network and by rail; Manchester Airport is nearby.

A wide variety of housing is available in south Manchester, Wilmslow, Macclesfield and surrounding Cheshire countryside.

The town is mixed socially, with many areas of affluence and some communities of relative social deprivation.

Cheshire East Borough Council was formed in April 2009 when the former Cheshire County Council was split in two. It is the third largest unitary authority in the North West. It has a residential population of approximately 370,000 residents. Our neighbours include North Staffordshire, Manchester, Cheshire West & Chester, Stockport and Warrington.

First impressions of Cheshire East are often of leafy lanes and wealthy households. Indeed as an area we host 5% of the North West workforce and 7.5% of North West businesses are based here. This can hide the reality that it is a diverse area with many differences in income, employment and health.

Figures that really show this include the life expectancy across the area. In parts of Macclesfield the average life expectancy for a woman is 94, but in areas of Crewe it is 77 – a huge difference of 17 years. Household income also differs, ranging from £65,000 in parts of Macclesfield to £18,000 in parts of Crewe.

Cheshire East Council has a responsibility

to ensure that all its services meet these different needs and that the way services are delivered across the area are developed and shaped to ensure that all who need them benefit from them. Our plan sets out how we will do this, who will be involved and how we will know if we have improved services for local people.

There are 80,000 children and young people aged 0 to 19, representing 22% of the total population of the area. In 2011, 7.5% of the school population was classified as belonging to an ethnic group other than White British compared to 22.5% in England overall. 5.7% of students speak English as an additional language. Polish and Urdu are the most recorded commonly spoken community languages in relation to the school population. 0.2% of students are of black African background.

Cheshire East has 150 schools comprising of 1 nursery school, 123 primary schools, 9 secondary schools, 13 academies, 1 Free School and 4 special schools. A secondary pupil referral unit opened September 2011.

Early Years service provision is delivered predominantly through the private and voluntary sector in over 170 settings; there are 22 local authority maintained nurseries and 1 Nursery School.

Young people perform well. They exceed the average for maintained schools in England at GCSE and A Level. We have many schools that are good or outstanding.

There are some areas where the experience is different. 6% of our population live in areas classified as being in the 20% most deprived nationally. The majority of these areas are in Crewe although there are pockets in Macclesfield.
