Reflection:

The course schedule is the plan for the unit and contains a timeline, activities, due dates, and notes to help students’ progress through the course. The timeline helps the instructor to organize the materials. The activities help to develop strategies to provide access to all students. These activities preview the online experiences the students will face and provides a framework to follow when developing the content. The whole document is an essential starting point for the instructor when they are building the unit. This helped me to focus on the content to be taught, when to do each module, and was the foundation for developing the strategies I was going to use to teach this online unit.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/sp85papx54rw8f1/7480_UP_Anderson_Jeremy.pdf?dl=0

Reflection: (100-125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.

This document was created at the beginning of the unit that I taught to the students to anticipate challenges and problems in the online classroom. It addresses concerns such as technology requirements, prerequisite skills, and universal design principles. I met this standard by anticipating what students would need by going through these elements to ensure that all students would have the same access and ability to master the content. It helped me to understand what the learners would need to be aware of by reflecting and planning before the implementation of the online experience. It proved to be a valuable tool as I did experience challenges with students not knowing how to navigate some of the online lessons that I created and had the students work through.

Reflection: (100-125 words) - Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.

This artifact shows the need for continual growth in technology knowledge by researching scholarly articles and learning about online learning resources. This topic is new and rapidly evolving and there is a great need to maintain skill and content knowledge to be a successful online educator. I had to research access and equity to better understand how to best provide access to all learners and to make sure that access was equitable to the diverse populations that would be accessing the online content. I was able to learn a great deal about the need to provide equitable access and how to actually provide equitable access. It shaped my philosophy on how to approach the online learning experience and I was able to implement things from this research into practice.

Reflection: (100-125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.

This artifact shows the need to differentiate instruction based on students’ learning styles. I took an assessment to learn not only about my learning style but on other peoples’ learning styles as well. The artifact shows the result of this test and my reflection on what I learned from doing this activity. It shaped the planning and implementation of the online unit that I used. This was important as it is vital to understand the different learning styles of students as you won’t have the ability to observe the students that take an online course. Including a learning style assessment will help the student and the teacher be successful in an online course.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/o0sgfn7mdb86aau/7480_Syllabus_Anderson_Jeremy.pdf?dl=0

Reflection: (100-125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.

This artifact was a critical component of the online experience. It meets the standard by laying out the terms of the class for both the students and myself. It contains clear expectations for the course including the grading criteria and rules for behavior for the course. It also contains a section on the organization for the course so that students would know how to navigate the material and what would be expected of them. This helped me to understand the course better because of the detail involved in laying out the course to the students. It made me more accountable because of the written commitment and did the same for the students.

Reflection: (100-125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.

This artifact is from the opening page on schoology, visible to the students when they first log in to the site. It contains a welcome letter and instructions on navigating the course. It explains how the course is organized into 9 units and how to understand the material contained in each unit. This proved to be very helpful as I didn’t have to explain how the materials were organized to students or parents. It was critical in helping students know what to do and when to do it by. It helped show me the importance of explaining the course organization as in a fully online course you don’t have the luxury of telling the whole class at the same time.

This artifact shows the assignment given to all students and a sample from one student that demonstrates higher order thinking, creativity, social negotiation, and a project based lesson. This assignment was a central theme that incorporated all elements of this standard. Students had to show mastery in all aspects of this standard by working online with other students in a project-based task. It was a valuable experience as I learned a great deal on how to design and implement a project-based task. Each student turned in a unique project to be assessed, which helped to meet this standard.

Reflection: (100-125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.

This artifact is a sample of the analytic data that I used during the implementation of the online learning experience. To be an online educator I had to use data on a regular basis to identify student learner problems, chart progress, and use the information to inform decisions. This sample shows how I was able to chart and assist students with their time management. This data and others like it also was critical in identifying students in need of interventions, which came in the form of email contact, one-to-one interventions, and granting accommodations. This helped me in understanding how to use data when I didn’t have observation to assist in informing decisions.

Reflection: (100-125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning. This artifact is an outline of the assignments, materials, assessments, and instructions used in the online learning course. The activities are diverse and took into consideration all learners involved in the online teaching experience. I included resources that I thought would be beneficial to the age group and cultural diversity that were involved in this experience. I also used the 504 plans and IEP modifications as they applied to specific students. This helped me to understand the importance of providing modifications to students and to design activities for a diverse population. The activities proved to be meaningful based on assessment results and student engagement.

Reflection: (100-125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.

This document is the result of an assignment where all students were able to choose a topic of their choice and collaborate to create scatterplots based on the chosen topic. It allowed the students to use their diverse talents to create slides to show mastery of the standard being assessed. The students had to work together to create the document and all students were included in the collection of data and the creation of the artifact. It helped me to understand the power of online learning as this artifact could not have been possible without connecting all students with the power of sharing documents. It was a powerful example of what is possible in an online learning environment.

Reflection: (100-125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.

This artifact shows a sample of the communication tools used in this online course. I was able to send messages to students throughout the unit to a central page designed for communicating. Many of the student had these messages sent directly to their mobile devices. This helped in continuing the dialogue between teacher and students throughout the unit. There was a tragic event that happened in our school and communication was critical when plans needed to be changed. I learned the importance of communication and having a plan in place to communicate with students that were not physically located in the same place.

Reflection: (100-125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning. This artifact shows the process in the set up of the online course to ensure parents had a way to communicate and interact with their students. Parents could join the course as observers and could stay up to date with the materials and due dates in the course. They could also send messages, or call with any questions or comments that they needed to share. I also was able to send messages and share information with parents effectively through the notification process when the course was set up. This helped me to understand the need to keep parents involved in the online learning process. It is important that parents who are invested in their child’s education have a way to be notified of the actions taking place in the online course.

Reflection: (100-125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.

This artifact is the top of the forum where students interacted and commented on each others projects. Students told each other what their topic and predictions for the data project were and later talked with each other about the results. This was important as it fostered student-to-student communication. I met this standard by using forums throughout the course and made it an important part of this online unit. It helped to generate interest in the project and make the results more meaningful to the students as they shared what they had learned with each other.

Reflection: (100-125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.

This artifact represents a lesson we did in class using the LMS as a platform for synchronous learning. The unit I taught was a blended unit and I was not able to do a synchronous session outside of school hours. I was able to meet this standard by having students share data and communicate with each other using Google slides in class as a means of working together synchronously. This taught me how to manage a class using technology that I later incorporated in the course when I facilitated an online lesson on special education. I used the same approach that I learned with my students for that lesson.

Reflection: (100-125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.

This artifact shows how I was able to communicate to the students asynchronously throughout the course. It was important as many of the announcements were part of the learning process and helped guide the students in lessons and in the course organization. These announcements gave students opportunities for remediation and enrichment. They were helpful in studying for the assessment at the end of the unit. This type of communication has an advantage over oral communication by being permanent and accessible at anytime. Students were instructed on where to view these announcements and they could also communicate questions and concerns at any time throughout the unit.

Reflection: (100-125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.

This artifact is a sample of the grade book that the students had access to throughout the implementation of the online unit. The icons are comments with feedback to the students for their formative assessments. The students were given time frames for these assessments and could monitor their progress. Students were also able to make up assignments or get additional help when they were unsuccessful in the early stages of their learning. This helped me to understand ways to communicate the results of what the students did and guided the instruction for future assignments. It was an important part of the course for students to know how they were progressing.

Reflection: (100-125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.

This artifact is an example of the way I gave feedback for assignments and projects. Students were given feedback on graded assignments within a reasonable amount of time. Feedback was specific and students knew they had the opportunity to comment or ask questions about the feedback they received. This was an important part of the online learning experience as written feedback is a way to let students know how they are progressing through the course. This helped me to think about feedback and why it is important to get that feedback out to students quickly so that as they progressed through the course they would be more confident with what they were learning.

Reflection: (100-125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.

This artifact is an example of the testing data with analysis to ensure fairness and to evaluate the effectiveness of each question. I created a summative assessment for the online unit and administered the test to the students. The data analysis showed the percentage of students who got each question correct which is a good way to test the validity of each question. This shows mastery by evaluating the students throughout the course and reviewing student responses to test items. This helped me to understand the time commitment to converting test items to a digital format, reflecting on test security, and how to analyze test results.

Reflection: (100-125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.

This artifact shows the setup process to creating the grade book used in the online course. Grades are an important way to increase student productivity by giving them feedback at providing them with motivation to meet each of the standards that were assessed in the online unit. The grade book was used throughout the experience and aligned with the standards the unit taught. This helped me to understand how to create an online grade book, how to manage it throughout the unit, and how the grades could drive instruction based on mastery or lack of for each standard.

Reflection: (100-125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.

This artifact is from the analytics section that I used in tracking data in the online course. This gave me the ability to observe what the students were doing and how often they were doing it. I was able to see in each class the assignments that were being used and at what time periods were they being used the most. I did this on a large scale by viewing individual assignments and also for students to see who was utilizing the online platform. Looking at both sets of data helped me to understand the whole picture of the online course and the students’ level of engagement in each assignment. This was helpful in understanding how students interacted with the online content.

Reflection: (100-125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.

This artifact is representative of my commitment to troubleshoot software and hardware problems. I gave students a place to go if they had problems with either the software or the hardware. I met this standard by helping students in the computer lab as well as provided answers through telephone and by email. This helped me to understand the large variety of platforms that online courses take as students presented me with several problems based on what device that they were trying to access the content on. There were a variety of issues with hardware that we dealt with in the computer lab as well. I was able to troubleshoot them and find ways for all students to have access to the online content in the lab.

Reflection: (100-125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.

This artifact is what I used to ensure that students knew the code of conduct for the online course. It also addressed what was inappropriate in terms of forums, commenting, and posting. The students had to acknowledge that they read and agreed to the terms outlined in the document. This strategy helped in limiting the occurrences of students using the LMS inappropriately. This helped me to understand in what ways students might use the online platform in inappropriate ways and how to keep that from happening. It kept the learning environment positive and focused on learning.

Artifact 24 – Course/Teacher Evaluation

PSC Online Teaching Endorsement Standards:Candidates will provide opportunities for evaluating teaching effectiveness within the online environment (i.e., classroom assessment techniques, teacher evaluations, teacher peer reviews). (III.iii.IV)

Reflection: (100-125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.

This artifact shows how the students were able to give feedback on the unit. This provided them with the opportunity to evaluate the effectiveness of the instructor and the content that was provided to them in the unit. This is important to help in further refining and developing online content in the future. The feedback from the students is helpful in seeing what went well and what needs to be improved. It also gives the students a voice in what they learned and how they learned it. The biggest concern in implementing this on the LMS that I chose was making the feedback anonymous as students were not likely honest because they comments were attached to their names. This is something that would need to be done differently in the future.
