Vaccines to Prevent and Manage Outbreaks of Rift Valley Fever
Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a mosquito borne disease found mainly in the Horn of Africa.
It causes abortion rates exceeding 90 percent in livestock. It also leads to severe human suffering.
Experts rank RVF as one of the top biological threats for the United States.
The FAZD Center is
evaluating four
candidate animal
vaccines for RVF
developed at the
University of Texas
Medical Branch.
Early results suggest the
RVF vaccines produce
antibodies believed to be
protective against RVF.
The FAZD Center will
submit the best RVF
candidate vaccine to a
virus challenge in 2010.
A successful RVF vaccine will meet an urgent
need to provide the nation with a defense
against a potentially catastrophic disease.
