Candidiasis
Appearance:Removable creamy-white plaque (pseudomembranous)Underlying mucosa is normal or erythematous
Location: Tongue, palate, buccal mucosa
5D’s: Drugs, Dentures, Diabetes, Debilitation, Dryness
DD: Cheek Chewing, Thermal burn, Chemical burn
Tx: Systemic antifungals (fluconazole or ketoconazole) Topical antifungals (clotrimazole, nystatin suspension)
Angular Cheilitis
Appearance: fissured, erythematous
Location: commissure
Tx: Antifungal (Nystatin Crema) Antifungal + corticosteriod (vytone, mycolog II) If Antifungals don’t work try “Triple Antibiotic Ointment” (OTC)
In children, usually caused by staphylococcus not candidiasis
