October, 2015 Dear Parents and Guardians, The Halloween celebrations will soon be upon us. The annual Halloween Parade for the children of Candlebrook will be held on Friday, October 30th, beginning at approximately 1:30PM. (AM Kindergarten students will parade around the hallways at 10:15AM.) Parents are invited to view the parade from the sidewalk in front of the Main Entrance and on the lawn across from the bus lane. Only parents assisting with classroom parties are permitted to go to classrooms. Homeroom parents are not permitted to bring young siblings to the classroom parties since your first priority is the classroom students. You should also be in the process of obtaining your clearances. Once completed, please submit your clearances to the office. After the parade in the front of our school, students will return to their classrooms for parties. If any parents do not want their children to walk in the parade, please contact the school office at 610-205-3702 to schedule an alternative activity.
ADVANCE NOTICE REGARDING COSTUMES: (This also pertains to our PTC Monster Mash on 10/23 in our Multi-Purpose Room)
PARENTS MUST PROVIDE GUIDANCE IN THE CHOICE AND CONSTRUCTION OF YOUR CHILD’S HALLOWEEN COSTUME. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD’S COSTUME IS “SIMPLE” AND APPROPRIATE FOR AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SETTING. COSTUMES SHOULD NOT BE OFFENSIVE OF ETHNIC AND/OR RELIGIOUS GROUPS. CHILDREN MUST BE ABLE TO WALK, SEE CLEARLY, AND BE WARM. PLEASE REFRAIN FROM COSTUMES THAT ARE SUGGESTIVE OF VIOLENCE (i.e. “Scream” masks pumping blood, etc.), DRUGS OR ALCOHOL OR INCLUDE WEAPONS OF ANY TYPE OR FACSIMILES OF WEAPONS (i.e. GUNS, KNIVES, SWORDS). IT IS AGAINST DISTRICT POLICY TO BRING SUCH ITEMS TO SCHOOL! We recommend a “hands free” costume for our school event. Children should bring their costumes to school in a bag clearly marked with their name. All children will be expected to change from their costumes prior to dismissal. Please help us promote a positive Halloween experience for our children. Thank you very much for your cooperation in this matter. Lunch/Recess Schedule: Grade 4 – 11:15 – 12:00 3 – 11:25 – 12:10 2 – 12:05 – 12:50 1 – 12:15 – 1:00 Our tentative time schedule of events follows: 1:15 to 1:30PM - Students change into costumes.
1:30 to 2:15PM - Classes will be called to report to the All Purpose Room beginning with 4th Grade, 3rd, 2nd, etc. where they will have an opportunity to view one another’s costumes. Kindergarten will lead the parade, followed by first, second, third and fourth grades.
2:15 to 3:00PM - Children return to classrooms for classroom parties. 3:00 to 3:25PM - Students clean up and prepare to leave (all costumes bagged and ready to be taken
home). Please coordinate carpools if you plan to attend the parade since parking is limited. Your efforts will reduce traffic and parking around the parade route. The parade will be cancelled if it is raining. Sincerely, Anthony J. Sparano, Jr. Principal (over for costumes and schedules)
October, 2015
Dear Parents, I am happy to share with you how some of our classrooms conducted their Halloween parties during the last couple of years while observing our Health and Wellness Policy. Since most students receive plenty of treats on Halloween night to enjoy at home, let’s steer away from “candy” as part of the Halloween party. You also need to check with the classroom teachers regarding food allergies. A healthy snack could still be an item not permitted in the classroom. The most popular items enjoyed in the past were: sliced apples with a dip, soft pretzels or pretzel bits with cheese sauce, pumpkin seeds, Jello Jigglers of all different shapes and sizes, cheese fingers (cheese sticks with ridges cut into them and tiny apple slices for fingernails), apple faces with sunflower seeds as teeth and raisins for eyes, pizza, marshmallow ghost made with pretzel stick legs, raisins, craisins, grapes, nachos and salsa, apples cut to resemble mouths with almonds representing the teeth, clear cups filled with orange jello and green on top to look like pumpkins, clear rubber gloves stuffed with popcorn, fruit trays, cheese trays, vegetable trays, banana and orange salad, baked cheese balls, popcorn balls, fruit cocktail, mini yogurt flavors, chex mix, trail mix, dried fruit assortment, rice crispy treats decorated with orange and black jimmies. Beverages consisted of: apple cider, water, fruit punch with sherbet, fruit juice packs and yogurt shakes (orange juice could also be added for a smoothie). In addition to food, there were many games, crafts and activities held during the parties such as decorating mini pumpkins, Halloween BINGO, pass the “hat” pumpkin, 7-Up, wood hanging scary signs, scary storytelling and decorating apples. Teachers and parents reported that students had a great time! In fact, the classrooms that did not make food the top priority of the party noticed that the students were better behaved and enjoyed making things to bring home. Here are more orange ideas for Halloween treats:
• Carrot sticks with ranch dressing dyed with orange food coloring • Fruit salad or fruit kabobs with oranges, cantelope and mangoes • Baked sweet potato strips • Frozen orange fruit bars or sugar free popsicles • Orange cheddar cheese chunks/cubes • Orange cool whip on orange jello molds

Guidance Lessons this cycle will focus on making good choices, not giving in to peer pressure, and being an Upstander. Peer pressure begins at an early age and kids need the skills to say no to healthy and unkind behaviors.
First graders will read My Best Friend at School, a story about a classmate who is very silly and tries to get his other classmates to be silly too. This lesson reinforces the idea that we don’t have to follow what our friends are doing if they aren’t making the right choices.
Second graders will read a story about The Band
Aid Chicken. They are learning the importance of standing up for what is right and not to “peck”on others.
Third graders are reading If Only I Had a Green
Nose. They are exploring how to stand up to spoken and unspoken peer pressure and make choices independently - regardless of what others may be pressuring them to do.
Fourth graders are learning how not to get caught in the web of peer pressure. The fourth graders are practicing the following steps to say “No” and still keep their friends:
1. Ask Questions (what are we going to do?)
2. Name the Trouble (that’s...)
3. Identify Consequences
4. Suggest an alternative (why don’t we...)
5. Move it, Sell it (Come on, it will be fun)

Words to live by:
“Wrong is WRONG even if everyone is doing it.
Right is right even if NO ONE is doing it.”
Candlebrook will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week from Monday, October 26th through Friday, October 30th. This year’s theme is “I’ve Got Better Things to Do Than Drugs!” Each day of Red Ribbon week we are reinforcing the idea of living a healthy, drug free lifestyle. During health class, students in grades 1 - 4 decorated their own iPhone and created “apps” showing the healthy choices they can make. Please stop in to see their work exhibit on the bulletin boards. Lessons continue to be taught through the health and guidance curriculum in the 1st - 4th grade classrooms. You can also reinforce these concepts by talking with your child about the Red Ribbon Week Pledge:
“I want to enjoy life and be the best that I can be. I pledge to be healthy. I will not use illegal drugs. I pledge to say “No!” to drugs. I will take care of my body and live a drug-free, happy and healthy life.”
Red Ribbon Week Activities 2015:
Monday - “I’ve Got Better Things to Do Than Drugs”
Tuesday - “I Love My Drug Free Selfies” - Students should wear red to show support for Red Ribbon Week!
Wednesday - “You Mustache Yourself “Is This Healthy” - Students can wear mustache anything!
Thursday - “Follow Your Dreams, Not Drugs” - Student are encouraged to wear PJs or comfortable clothing!
Friday - “Treat Yourself to a Drug Free Life!”
Parent: What can I say to my child about not giving in to peer pressure?Counselor: Making good decisions independently is hard enough as kids get older, and kids are surrounded by peer influences. You can remind your child that its normal to listen to and learn from other friends in their peer group, and some peers have a really positive influence, but it is up to your child to make safe and healthy choices instead of giving in to bad influences. It is a hard thing to say no, but see if they have at least one other friend who can join your child in walking away from peer pressure. Have someone else willing to say “no” will take the power away from the peer pressure and possibly make it easier to resist. Remind your child that, if he or she continues to face peer pressure, talking to a trusted adult can help him or her feel better. You can role play how to say no or how to come up with an alternative response and walk away from a situation that may get your child in trouble. Peer pressure is tough for, but the more you talk about and practice with them, hopefully the easier it will become to say no in the future! Check out kidshealth.org for more great tips!

INNOVATION WORLDS
BUILDERS BOULEVARD Some kids like to use their minds while others like to use their hands. This world mashes them together! The young innovator gets to be creative with what they want to build and then has an opportunity to make it real. Fans of construction toys are in heaven here.
BIOLOGISTS BAY
We know pretty early on who is a dog whisperer. That stated, this love of life reaches beyond dogs, and even mammals! Lovers of cats, spiders, dolphins, tulips, bacteria, and even velociraptors will have a chance to immerse themselves into all that is living (or was alive at some point)!
PILOTS PAD Dreams of flying are never in short supply, especially with children. The Pilots Pad is all about air and space so your future aviator has an outlet to soar. Whether you have an aspiring jet pilot or a hopeful astronaut, we have the perfect place for them to discover flight.
SORCERERS SQUARE Step into the portal to discover our science fiction and fantasy world. Whether you’re a fan of Star Wars, World of Warcraft, or Harry Potter, this is one place where you can feel right at home. No offense to lovers of the real world.
LAB-RATS LAIR Do you have a child who loves to experiment with science? Of course you do! What kid wouldn’t want to see the explosion when you put Mentos in Coke? In the Lab-Rats Lair, we conduct safe, and sometimes gooey experiments that strange science fans of all ages can enjoy.
PERFORMERS PARADISE STEAM is STEM with the addition of arts and music. Learning and exploring the arts tune children into their creative side by engaging them in the most right-brained arena of the fair. Be entertained or discover your calling to be the world’s next superstar!
ROBOTS RETREAT If there is one area to look for the latest innovations, robotics is certainly a great place to start. Being able to watch a robot in action is nice but it’s hard to beat the satisfaction of building and controlling a life-like machine for yourself!
HACKERS HIDEOUT It’s chic to be geek these days. For those who crave technology, this is where you can ride the wave of the future and push technology to its limits! Innovators of hardware and software are welcome.
NUMBERS NATION Mathematics and competition collide at Numbers Nation. If you are looking for a place to test your number prowess, challenge others in games of brainpower and dexterity, or simply hone your knowledge of the universe’s common language, then this is the place for you.
CONSERVATIONISTS CORNER Being green can be rewarding to you and your surroundings. Creative advocates of air, water, natural resources, and more will be amazed by today’s energy advances. In other words, this environment is for the environment.
