In the turbulent scenario of the eighties, amid the chaos and darkness that invaded Peruvian homes at that time, a young Ursula Sayan developed a special fascination with light and its vital nature.

In her exploration, she discovered wax and its quality, which enabled her to interpret the spontaneous language of this element. She created her first candles, relying upon her instinct and inspiration to improvise tools and processes in a corner of her parents’ home.

In 1998, she had the opportunity to share her knowledge with a group of children as part of a program organized by a NGO that proposed her to teach them classes on how to make candles and wax candle holders. This program allowed Ursula to reach a personal consolidation as an artist which in turn enabled her to establish herself in this line of work with a solid spiritual relevance.

Convinced of the urgency to create in order to grow and to grow in order to create, she set up a small workshop on the third floor of her parents’ home, this time with the help of a young assistant whom she had met when he was a young teen in her classes at the NGO.

In 2005, she formed a partnership and collectively with this associate launched Tanha Candle Design, a company that today brings together the mysticism of her work and the structure necessary to support sustainable production and growth so that her candle sculptures may reach more people while maintaining the essence of its origins.

Tanha means “the joy of living” and the company’s philosophy is based on that premise. At Tanha, employees live and work doing what they like the most: illuminating the life of their clients with unique, beautiful pieces. They draw upon the essence of nature to give free reign to their creativity and passion for wax, combining inputs of high quality with techniques acquired with time and dedication.
