Graces from Retreat

Earlier this month I went on a silent retreat in the dessert in Arizona as I have the past two years. The reason you didn't hear about it is because I left before we re-opened for weekend Masses, so I wasn't able to announce it like I have in the past.

I chose to go on retreat because the time of corona isolation was not a retreat. Some people weathered the isolation with ease. They watched a lot of Net ix, worked in the yard, took more time shing, or tackled some house projects. I admit that I did have some good days in isolation, but on the whole, I didn't enjoy it very much. It's hard to celebrate Mass alone every day. It's hard to have such limited contact with mom and dad. It's hard to be disconnected from parishioners and family for so long. I felt the disconnect wasn't only with my parishioners but with God as well. My prayer was often mechanical and dry.

I needed this silent retreat, and I'm glad I went. I was able to focus on my relationship with God. In St. John's Gospel, Jesus talks about the importance of remaining close to Him. One of the images He uses is the vine and the branches. He is the vine; we are the branches. In John 15, He says we need to stay close to Him or we risk becoming dry and lifeless. This relationship is so important that He says, "Without me you can do nothing." Every warning He gives in that passage I felt during the April isolation. I felt dry and lifeless. I felt I was spinning my wheels, getting nowhere fast.

During my prayer time on retreat, I felt the Lord invited me to put Him rst. My rst job is to remain in Him. Everything else is secondary. If I don't stay close to Him, I will notice it soon enough. The storms that I encounter in parish life will soon become storms in my heart. In Matthew 14:22-33, Peter sinks after taking a few steps on water because he sees the storm and is afraid. The di erence between staying close to the Lord and going at it on my own is night and day. I can stay close to Him, or I can be a dry and lifeless vine. I can focus on Him, or I can focus on the storms and sink like Simon Peter.

I thank Fr. John, Deacon Ricky and the sta for taking care of all the pastoral requests while I was away from the parishes. While it was a good retreat, I am glad to be back. Even though our weekend Mass isn't anywhere near normal, it is a good experience to celebrate Mass with my parishioners again.

Peace,Fr. Matthew

Sunday’s ReadingsFirst Reading — Filled with the Holy Spirit, the apostles begin to speak in tongues (Acts 2:1-11)Psalm — Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth (Psalm 104)Second Reading — In one Spirit we are baptized into one body and given to drink of one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13)Gospel — Jesus Christ appears to the disciples and sends them on their mission with the power to forgive or retain sins through the Holy Spirit (John 20:19-23)

Private Baptisms Private baptisms can be done for families who have already attended the baptismal seminar. Attendance is limited to 10 people and everyone is asked to wear a mask. Please contact deacon Ricky or the Pastoral Center to schedule. We are currently researching online options for a baptismal seminar for families to attend. We will have more information in the coming weeks.

Continued Closure The Parish O ce lobby will remain closed. O ce sta will continue working from home. The phone system has been con gured so that sta members can take your calls. You will be connected to Julie, Kaye or Carol Ann. The Adoration Chapel will also remain closed as per Bishop

Duca. Also, we will not resume taking communion to the homebound and we will continue graveside services until further notice. Please be patient with us as we work through this.

Funerals Inside the Church We can have funerals in the churches beginning on June 1. Attendance will be limited to the 25% of capacity currently allowed for weekend Masses (75 at St. Philip, 89 at OLOP, 59 at St. James). There will be no wakes in the church at this time.

Tithe Envelopes Parishioners who are unable to attend Mass are invited to continue making their weekly tithes by dropping the envelopes in the mail slot on the door at the Pastoral Center or at the satellite o ce at St. James. Envelopes can also be mailed to the Pastoral Center.

Summer Faith Formation Summer Faith Formation that was scheduled for June 8-19 has been postponed. Refund requestswill not be denied but we ask for your patience as we research an alternative Faith Formationprogram – possibly an “at home” program or something later in the summer as restrictions maybe lighter at that time.

Mass Attendance Guidelines Currently, we are only allowed to have 25% of the buildings capacity present at any given time.
