August 30, 2020 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Cross of JesusThe perception of a cross changed dramatically after Jesus’ crucifixion. Before that event, death on a cross was not only horrible, it was degrading. It was a penalty reserved only for the most wretched of criminals. The word “glory” would not have found its way into the same sentence containing the word “cross.” But all that changed with Jesus. Over time, believers began to venerate and honor the cross. They painted, sculpted, and carved images of it. Many lost their own lives for their association with it. Today our reverence for and relationship with the cross recalls little of the contempt originally associated with it. As it has been through the ages, it is our perception of the cross that determines how we follow Jesus.

Prayer for Racial Harmony “God our Father, You call us to love one another as You have loved us. We pray for the conversion of hearts in our Diocese of Baton Rouge to bring about racial harmony rooted in Your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, strip us of our pride, mistrust and prejudices, so that we may be able to dialogue with one another to build communities where justice, peace and love flourish. We ask these blessings trusting in the infinite mercy of Jesus and the intercession of Mary our Mother. Amen.”
Private Baptisms We are currently using an online baptismal prep program. The cost is $9.99. The program can be completed in your home. After completion, you will be provided a certificate that can be given to us. Once you completed the seminar, we will schedule the baptism for your child. Please call the office and we will provide the link to the program.
Mass Attendance Guidelines Currently, we are allowed to have 25% of the buildings capacity present at any given time. The dispensation of the obligation to attend Sunday Mass will remain in effect in the Diocese of Baton Rouge until further notice. If you are at risk (elderly or have underlying health conditions) you are encouraged to stay home.
COVID Pastoral Center Procedures The Pastoral Center remains closed for walk-ins at this time, however, the office staff does have the ability to answer phone calls and provide services. If you need to come to the office (ex. to purchase a mausoleum crypt), you can make an appointment and one of the staff will be able to help you. Please call the office for an appointment and please wear a mask when you come.
Funerals Inside the Church Attendance for funerals in the church will be limited to 25% capacity of the church. There will NO be visitation (viewing of the body) allowed in the church at this time so the casket will remain closed once it has arrived at the church. The doors of the church will be opened 30 minutes prior to the start of the service. Families are allowed to read the obituary and pray the Rosary during this time. Please do not put anything in the church (such a picture boards). We understand this is a difficult time and we are here to help. Please call the Pastoral Center before you plan your service to be sure that you are in compliance with the current guidelines.
Meetings on Church Property Meetings of church organizations will be allowed again. The procedure is as follows:1. Call the Pastoral Center to let
them know that you want to have a meeting and the date you want it.
2. Go to the Pastoral Center (or St. James Office) for a key and the materials you will need for sanitizing the areas that you used.
3. A checklist for what needs to be sanitized is included with the supplies
4. A list of attendees at the meeting with the date of the meeting needs to be returned to the office with the key and supplies and checklist.
5. No more than 50 people will be allowed at a meeting and all must wear masks and be socially distanced (6 feet apart).
6. Meetings are to be held in the main parish hall at all locations to allow to proper distancing.
