TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 4, 2016

A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR ……1. Please see below the blessing I extended on the occasion

of the dedication of the new transitional housing apartments, The Gardens on 6th:

Loving Father, we gather here in this August of the Holy Year of Mercy, as decreed by Pope Francis. We gather to seek your kindly blessing on this land provided by the Tectum Corporation and these new apartments provided by Herb and Pat Murphy.

We thank you for the vision and generosity of all who labored for the good of those who will live on this land. May they find a good home here – one that is welcoming and safe.

We ask too, that you will continue to bless and encourage the good work of the St. Vincent de Paul Society under whose umbrella of service the Haven and Thrift shop were founded and continue to serve the underserved.

Finally, dear God, we praise You and bless You for all the wonders of Your creation and Your grace which prompts us to carry on Your good works in ministry to the needs of all our sisters and brothers, especially those who need us.

May Almighty God bless us all, may He make His face to shine upon us and give us peace. Amen.

2. Perhaps you’ve noticed the equipment around the church. The General Preservation Co. is cleaning and sealing the exterior of the church. They will probably be here for about two more weeks. Interestingly, Joe Goodburn, the superintendent of the job, is a former student and old friend of mine from the days at Watterson High School. (John Archibald, also from Watterson was the construction superintendent of the church.) They just can’t get away from me.

3. As of this writing, we are awaiting diocesan approval to allow the production company for the Bruce Willis movie to use our unpaved lot. More to come when we know something.

4. A prayer for Labor Day: Prayer For the Work of Our Hands Blessed are you, Lord God, Creator of all that is good, for in your mercy you give us work that we may be co-creators with you.

With hands to fashion and form, minds to imagine what has yet to be,hearts to care for what we have made, and a spirit to impart to our own creations,we rejoice in the labor you give us.By imitating you, our God and Maker,we continue to shape the world, to name it and claim itand be good stewards of your good giftsthrough the life-giving Spirit that renews the earth.Keep in our mind the power you share with us that we may create only that which leads to peace.May the work of our hands and our visions and dreams collaborate with your good will, which continues to build for us your kingdom on earth. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

– Diana Macalintal, Work of Your Hands

NOTES FROM THE LOFT JOIN THE CHOIR: Regular choir rehearsals resume next

Sunday, September 11th. The choir rehearses on the loft at 9:30 a.m. and sings for the 10:45 a.m. Mass every week. There are also rehearsals on Thursday nights from 7:00-8:10 p.m. (starting September 15). New members – both women and men – are absolutely welcome to join.

JOIN THE BELL CHOIR: The St. Edward’s Handbell Choir is looking for new members! We currently have a few bells that are in need of people to ring them. We’ll teach you everything you need to know about the music and how to play the bells – all you have to do is volunteer. Rehearsals are on Tuesday nights from 7:00-8:30 p.m. from September through May, and the bell choir plays for Masses about every 4-6 weeks, including 9:00 p.m. Christmas Eve and Easter Sunday. Ringing in the bell choir is a great way to start participating in music ministry – no prior experience is necessary.

DIOCESAN FLOOD RELIEF COLLECTION ~ SEPTEMBER 17-18

Over the last couple weeks we have seen the terrible news of the historic flooding in Louisiana. The region is experiencing what is being called the worst domestic disaster since Hurricane Sandy. As many as 60,000 homes have been damaged, with nearly 20,000 people being rescued from the flood waters. Lives have been cruelly altered. As a result, Bishop Campbell requests that all parishes in the Diocese of Columbus participate in the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ emergency collection to assist the victims of the 2016 Louisiana Floods.

Our hearts and prayers go out to the families who have lost loved ones and to all those living in communities who have lost homes and businesses along with their sense of security. Our prayers and material support are urgently needed to help rebuild lives. The USCCB has asked that this emergency collection for the 2016 Louisiana floods be taken on the weekend of September 17-18, 2016. This emergency collection will be used both to support the humanitarian efforts of Catholic Charities USA and to provide pastoral and rebuilding support to impacted dioceses. You can contribute via the St. Edward Online Giving or make checks payable to St. Edward Church with “Catholic Charities Flood Relief” in the memo for the second collection that weekend.

SPIRITUAL ADOPTIONTo all who spiritually adopted a baby in March, a hearty “Thank You!” Your baby weighs over one pound now, and his mother can feel his movement. Before this time he was too small for her to feel. Although he swam with

ease in his watery world, he needed to be big and strong enough to kick hard against the outside wall and dent it – the inside wall of the uterus has little feeling. We are midway through the pregnancy now. Your prayers have helped your baby’s mother continue with her pregnancy and seek the help she needs. Please continue your daily prayer that this little one be allowed to survive.

THURSDAY MORNING SCRIPTURE STUDYThe new study, “Priest, Profit, King” by Bishop Robert Barron will begin September 8th in classroom 8 following the 9:00 a.m. Mass. We were all anointed with these words at Baptism. Bishop Barron explains what this means in the Old Testament, to Jesus and to us in our lives today. If you are interested in attending, please call Gayle Blubaugh at 740-739-6740 or email [email protected]. A limited number of books ($25.00) are available to pick up in the Parish Office.

TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 4, 2016

CORPORAL WORK OF MERCY ~ SHELTER THOSE WHO ARE

HOMELESSWhile we may not always have the ability to

bring someone into our home and care for their corporal and spiritual needs, there are some very

basic ways that we can involve ourselves in the plight of those who are homeless in our world. We can educate ourselves on the causes of homelessness. We can investigate the plight of the refugees driven from their homes by war and poverty and we can advocate for legislation on this divisive issue. We can look into and fight for the enforcement of the legislation for fair housing in our country and our community. We can clear the clutter from our homes and donate useable items for someone else’s home, thus simplifying our lives and using what we have to benefit others. We can volunteer with Habitat for Humanity or a similar program. We can acquaint ourselves with the homeless shelters in our area and offer support, supplies and donations. This brings me to the introduction of a way that we can, right here, right now, make a difference in the lives of those who are homeless in our community.

St. Vincent de Paul Housing Facilities, which also operates St. Vincent Haven, is opening a new transitional living program. The Gardens on 6th, in Newark, is a 24-unit transitional living program providing affordable housing coupled with case management and supportive services for men, women, and families exiting St. Vincent Haven, the Salvation Army and New Beginnings programs. Maximum time in the program will be one year and participants will be required to attend life skills workshops, set achievable goals and work with the staff at The Gardens to sustain their path toward self-sufficiency. This is a hand up not a hand out. The residents will be working diligently to improve their situations and insure that they have the planning and decision making skills to achieve success and meet their goals.

THE ST. VINCENT DE PAUL HOUSING FACILITY COULD USE OUR HELP FURNISHING THE APARTMENTS

The Women of St. Edward are inviting parishioners to participate in this Corporal Work of Mercy, by making a monetary donation to be used to purchase items for the apartments. Each apartment will need to be equipped with kitchen utensils/cookware/tableware and bed and bath linens. Some examples of what your donation will buy:• entire kitchen, bed and bath, $211.00• kitchen utensils/cookware/tableware, $140.00 • bed and bath linens, $71.00 • Sheets/blankets/pillows, $55.00• Pots and pans, $35.00 • Dishes, $25.00 • Bath towels and washcloths, $16.00 Please make a check payable to St. Edward Church with “St. Vincent de Paul Housing” in the memo and put your envelope in the collection basket. –Or– you can pay Online via the St. Edward website. Every dollar that you donate will be greatly appreciated. This is an incredible opportunity to shelter those who are homeless in our community and help them to attain the skills necessary to continue to provide for themselves and their family in the future. Lest we become like the rich man in the parable and miss the Lazarus on our doorstep, we should make a conscious effort to see those who are homeless in our community. I mean really see. Make eye contact and say hello. That communication brings us and our suffering brother or sister back to a basic sense of human dignity, human equality and human connection. That is the heart and soul of mercy.

The Catechism CornerWe continue our journey through the Catechism: The 4th Commandment: Honor your Father and your Mother by reading paragraphs 2234-2246 collectively entitled, “The Authorities in Civil Society” 2234 – God’s 4th Commandment also enjoins us to honor all who for our good have received authority in society from God. 2235 – Those who exercise authority should do so as a service. 2236 – The exercise of authority is meant to give outward expression to a just hierarchy of values in order to facilitate the exercise of freedom and responsibility by all. 2238 – Those subject to authority should regard those in authority as representatives of God. 2239 – It is the duty of citizens to contribute along with the civil authorities to the good of society. 2240 – Submission to authority and co-responsibility for the common good make it morally obligatory to pay taxes, vote, and defend one’s country. 2241 – The more prosperous nations are obliged, as able, to welcome the foreigner. 2242 – The citizen is obliged in conscience not to follow the directives of civil authorities when they are contrary to the demands of the moral order. 2243 – Armed resistance to oppression by political authority is not legitimate unless 5 conditions are met – please read those on your own. 2244 – Every institution is inspired, at least implicitly, by a vision of man and his destiny. The Church invites political authorities to measure their judgements and decisions against this inspired truth about God and man. 2245 – The Church is not to be confused in any way with the political community. “The Church respects and encourages the political freedom and responsibility of the citizen.” 2246 – It is part of the Church’s mission “to pass moral judgements even in matters related to politics, whenever the fundamental rights of man or the salvation of souls require it.”

At the end of today’s Gospel Reading from St. Luke, Jesus says a lot about what it means to be His disciple – the demands and the expectations. As His final statement in the reading, He says, “…anyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.”

This is another case where the translation from the original Greek may produce misunderstanding. Most of us understand the word “renounce” as meaning “reject” or “hand over.” However, another meaning of the Greek word might be “to say goodbye to.” That is the real message, and it is one with a strong stewardship element.

What the Lord may be trying to communicate is our possessions can stand in the way of being His disciple and being a good steward. It is a question of trust. Trust is at the center of a stewardship way of life. Jesus tells us that we need to trust in Him to a greater extent than in ourselves or in what we may possess. That is, of course, not easy for us.

Nevertheless, to place our trust in the Lord is exactly what it means to be His disciple. Psalms perfectly captures the challenge we face and provides the answer to the challenge as well. In Psalms we are told: “Man says to God, ‘Show me and I will trust You.’ And God replies “Trust me and I will show you’.” www.catholicsteward.com

DAY OF PRAYER FOR PEACE – SEPTEMBER 9 In light of recent incidents of violence and racial tension in communities across the United States, USCCB has invited Catholics across the country to participate in a Day of Prayer for Peace in Our Communities on September 9th, the feast of St. Peter Claver. For resources, visit www.usccb.org.

MERCY HERE, THERE, AND EVERYWHERE Has it sunk in yet? Do we really grasp that we are surrounded

by God’s mercy? As we continue to mark the Jubilee Year of Mercy, is it becoming more apparent to us that mercy is God’s “identity card” as Pope Francis has noted, and that as Christian people, it is to be ours as well?

Mother Teresa of Kolkata is to be canonized this month. Perhaps more than any individual in recent memory, Mother Teresa embodied the face of the merciful Christ for the world. Her selfless service on the streets of Kolkata inspired people of all ages and many faith traditions. Her care for the poor and dying was and is challenging to those of us who have never encountered such poverty in our own city streets, towns, and neighborhoods.

It seems appropriate that Mother Teresa’s canonization is taking place during this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Her life witness helps us to look at the circumstances of people where we live and to meet their need in the ways we are able – as Mother Teresa is quoted as saying, to do “small things with great love.”

What “small thing” can you do today to make the life of another better, to help Christ’s mercy to be known? How will mercy be your “identity card” now and into the future?

Page 9: CANONIZATION • SEPTEMBER 4, 2016 · 04-09-2016  · – Diana Macalintal, Work of Your Hands WELCOME! You may have come as a stranger to us, yet you are known to Our Lord, Jesus

“What page, what passage of the inspired books of the Old and New Testaments is not the truest of guides for human life?” ~Saint Benedict, from the Rule of Saint Benedict (73:3)

“Give yourself fully to God. He will use you to accomplish great things on the condition

that you believe much more in His love than in your own weakness.”

– SAINT TERESA OF CALCUTTA

Monday, September 5 ~ Twenty-Third Week in Ordinary Time

Saint Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa, Canonized a Saint 09/04/2016) ~ Labor Day ~

Holy Gospel: Luke 6:6-11 On a certain Sabbath Jesus went into the synagogue and taught, and there was a man there whose right hand was withered. The scribes and the Pharisees watched him closely to

see if he would cure on the Sabbath so that they might discover a reason to accuse him. But he realized their intentions and said to the man with the withered hand, “Come up and stand before us.” And he rose

and stood there. Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it?” Looking around at them all, he then said to him, “Stretch

out your hand.” He did so and his hand was restored. But they became enraged and discussed together

what they might do to Jesus.

Meditation: What is God's intention for the commandment “Keep holy the Sabbath” (ref. Exodus 20:8; Deut. 5:12)? The scribes and Pharisees wanted to catch Jesus in the act of breaking the Sabbath ritual so

they might accuse him of breaking God's law. Jesus knew their thoughts. The scribes and Pharisees were

filled with fury and contempt for Jesus because they put their own thoughts of right and wrong above God. They were caught up in their own legalism because they did not understand or see the purpose of God.

Jesus shows their fallacy by pointing to God's intention for the Sabbath: to do good and to save human life rather than do evil or destroy human life.

Prayer: O God, who called Saint Teresa to respond to the love of your Son thirsting on the cross with

outstanding charity to the poorest of the poor, grant us, we beseech you, by her intercession, to minister

to Christ in his suffering brothers. Through our Lord Jesus Christ your Son who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer seeking the intercession of Saint Teresa of Calcutta: Jesus, you made Saint Teresa an

inspiring example of firm faith and burning charity, an extraordinary witness to the way of spiritual childhood, and a great and esteemed teacher of the value and dignity of every human life. Grant that she

may be venerated and imitated as one of the Church's canonized saints. Hear the requests of all those who seek her intercession, especially the petition I now implore... (mention here the favor you wish to

pray for). May we follow her example in heeding Your cry of thirst from the Cross and joyfully loving You in the distressing disguise of the poorest of the poor, especially those most unloved and unwanted. We

ask this in Your name and through the intercession of Mary, Your Mother and the Mother of us all. Amen.

Contemplation: The Sabbath for Catholics (and all Christians for that matter) is celebrated on Sunday as the “Lord's Day” to commemorate God's work of redemption in Jesus Christ and the new work of creation

accomplished through Christ's death and resurrection (ref. 2 Corinthians 5:17). God's action is a model for us. If God "rested and was refreshed" on the seventh day, we, too, ought to “rest” and let others,

especially the poor, “be refreshed” (ref. Exodus 31:17; 23:12). Taking “our Sabbath rest” is a way of expressing honor to God for all that he has done for us. Such “rest” however does not exempt us from our

love for our neighbor. If we truly love the Lord above all else, then the love of God will overflow to love of

neighbor as well. Saint Augustine of Hippo said: "The charity of truth seeks holy leisure; the necessity of charity accepts just work.” How can we make Sunday a day holy to the Lord? First, by refraining from

unnecessary work and from activities that hinder the worship we owe to God. We can also perform works of mercy, such as humble service of the sick, the infirmed, and the elderly. And we ought to seek

appropriate relaxation of mind and body as well. The joy of the Lord's Day is a great gift to refresh and

Page 10: CANONIZATION • SEPTEMBER 4, 2016 · 04-09-2016  · – Diana Macalintal, Work of Your Hands WELCOME! You may have come as a stranger to us, yet you are known to Our Lord, Jesus

strengthen us in our love of God and of neighbor (ref. Nehemiah 8:10). On this “Labor Day,” let’s think

about how we can make every Sunday – the Lord’s Day – a day of rest, and rest in the arms of the Lord. On this Labor Day let’s also spend some time thinking about “how” we labor, and if any of our time is

spent laboring for the Lord to help those in need. Inspired by the life and work of Saint Teresa of Calcutta how can each of us labor to help those in need? Laboring for the poor, the needy, the ill, the lonely, the

marginalized of our society is a labor of love. Look around you – in your parish, your neighborhood, your office, your school, your family. Certainly there are people in need whom we can reach out and help, and

do so with love imitating Christ who always sought to help others.

Tuesday, September 6 ~ Twenty-Third Week in Ordinary Time

Holy Gospel: Luke 6:12-19 Jesus departed to the mountain to pray, and he spent the night in prayer to

God. When day came, he called his disciples to himself, and from them he chose Twelve, whom he also named Apostles: Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip,

Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called a Zealot, and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor. And he came down with them and stood on a

stretch of level ground. A great crowd of his disciples and a large number of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases;

and even those who were tormented by unclean spirits were cured. Everyone in the crowd sought to touch

him because power came forth from him and healed them all.

Meditation: When Jesus embarked on his mission he chose twelve men to be his friends and apostles. In

the choice of the twelve, we see a characteristic feature of God's work: Jesus chose very ordinary people. They were non-professionals, who had no wealth or position. They were chosen from the common people

who did ordinary things, had no special education, and no social advantages. Jesus wanted ordinary

people who could take an assignment and do it extraordinarily well. He chose these men, not for what they were, but for what they would be capable of becoming under his direction and power. When the Lord

calls us to serve, we must not shrug back because we think that we have little or nothing to offer. The Lord takes what ordinary people, like us, can offer and uses it for greatness in his kingdom. Is there

anything holding you back from giving yourself unreservedly to God?

Prayer: God of might, giver of every good gift, put into our hearts the love of your name, so that, by deepening our sense of reverence, and, by your watchful care, keep safe what you have nurtured.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Contemplation: Wherever Jesus went the people came to him because they had heard all the things he

did. They were hungry for God and desired healing from their afflictions. In faith they pressed upon Jesus to touch him. As they did so power came from Jesus and they were healed. Even demons trembled in the

presence of Jesus and left at his rebuke. Jesus offers freedom from the power of sin and oppression to all who seek him with expectant faith. When you hear God's word and consider all that Jesus did, how do you

respond? With doubt or with expectant faith? With skepticism or with confident trust? Pray to Jesus; while in prayer, ask him to increase your faith in his saving power and grace.

Wednesday, September 7 ~ Twenty-Third Week in Ordinary Time

Holy Gospel: Luke 6:20-26 Raising his eyes toward his disciples Jesus said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for the Kingdom of God is yours. Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied.

Blessed are you who are now weeping, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice

and leap for joy on that day! Behold, your reward will be great in heaven. For their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way. But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. But woe

to you who are filled now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will grieve and

weep. Woe to you when all speak well of you, for their ancestors treated the false prophets in this way.”

Meditation: How can one possibly find happiness in poverty, hunger, mourning, and persecution? If we want to be filled with the joy and happiness of heaven, then we must empty ourselves of all that would

shut God out of our hearts. Poverty of spirit finds ample room and joy in possessing God alone as the greatest treasure possible. Hunger of the spirit seeks nourishment and strength in God's word and Spirit.

Sorrow and mourning over wasted life and sin leads to joyful freedom from the burden of guilt and

oppression. God reveals to the humble of heart the true source of abundant life and happiness. Jesus promises his disciples that the joys of heaven will more than compensate for the troubles and hardships

they can expect in this world. Thomas Aquinas said: "No person can live without joy. That is why someone

Page 11: CANONIZATION • SEPTEMBER 4, 2016 · 04-09-2016  · – Diana Macalintal, Work of Your Hands WELCOME! You may have come as a stranger to us, yet you are known to Our Lord, Jesus

deprived of spiritual joy goes after carnal pleasures." Do you know the joy and happiness of hungering

and thirsting for God alone?

Prayer: O God, by whom we are redeemed and receive adoption, look graciously upon your beloved sons and daughters, that those who believe in Christ may receive true freedom and an everlasting inheritance.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one

God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Contemplation: When you encounter misfortune, grief, or tragic loss, do you respond with fear or with faith? With passive resignation or with patient hope and trust in God? We know from experience that no

one can escape all of the inevitable trials of life — pain, suffering, sickness, and death. When Jesus began

to teach his disciples he gave them a "way of happiness" that transcends every difficulty and trouble that can weigh us down with grief and despair. Jesus began his sermon on the mount by addressing the issue

of where true happiness can be found. The word beatitude literally means happiness or blessedness. Jesus' way of happiness, however, demands a transformation from within — a conversion of heart and

mind which can only come about through the gift and working of the Holy Spirit.

Thursday September 8 ~ Twenty-Third Week in Ordinary Time

Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Holy Gospel: Matthew 1:1-16,18-23 The Book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the

son of Abraham. Abraham became the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers. Judah became the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar. Perez became

the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram, Ram the father of Amminadab. Amminadab became the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab.

Boaz became the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth. Obed became the father of Jesse, Jesse the

father of David the king.

David became the father of Solomon, whose mother had been the wife of Uriah. Solomon became the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asaph. Asaph became the father

of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, Joram the father of Uzziah. Uzziah became the father of

Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah. Hezekiah became the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amos, Amos the father of Josiah. Josiah became the father of Jechoniah

and his brothers at the time of the Babylonian exile.

After the Babylonian exile, Jechoniah became the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,

Zerubbabel the father of Abiud. Abiud became the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor, Azor the father of Zadok. Zadok became the father of Achim, Achim the father of Eliud, Eliud the father of Eleazar.

Eleazar became the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ.

This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since he

was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David,

do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people

from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means “God is with us.”

Meditation: Understandably many ask the question: “What is the significance of the genealogy in

Matthew's gospel?” This genealogy is arranged in three sections portraying three great stages in the spiritual history of the people of the old covenant. The first stage begins with Abraham, the father of the

chosen people, and ends with David, God's anointed King. The second stage takes us to the exile of God's people in Babylon. This is the period of Israel's shame and disaster due to her unfaithfulness. The third

stage takes us to Jesus, God's anointed Messiah. Jesus the Messiah is the direct descent of Abraham and

David, and the rightful heir to David's throne. God in his mercy fulfilled his promises to Abraham and to David that he would send a Savior and a King to rule over the house of Israel and to deliver them from

their enemies. Jesus is the fulfillment of all God's promises. He is the hope not only for the people of the Old Covenant but for all nations as well. Afterall, He is the Savior of the world.

Prayer: Impart to your servants, we pray, O Lord, the gift of heavenly grace, that the feast of the Nativity

of the Blessed Virgin may bring deeper peace to those for whom the birth of her Son was the dawning of

Page 12: CANONIZATION • SEPTEMBER 4, 2016 · 04-09-2016  · – Diana Macalintal, Work of Your Hands WELCOME! You may have come as a stranger to us, yet you are known to Our Lord, Jesus

salvation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy

Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Contemplation: Matthew begins his gospel with the genealogy of Jesus from Abraham's lineage through

the line of David, King of Israel. Matthew concludes his genealogy by stating that both Mary, Jesus' mother and Joseph, his foster father, came from the line of David. Mary was asked to assume in faith a

burden of tremendous responsibility. That required faith and trust. Also, Mary was not yet married. Sexual

relations outside of marriage (fornication) was a sinful act then, and remains so today. Mary was only espoused to Joseph, and such an engagement had to last for a whole year. She was asked to assume a

great risk. She could have been rejected by Joseph, by her family, by all her own people. Mary knew that Joseph and her family would not understand without revelation from God. She nonetheless believed and

trusted in God's promises. Joseph, a just and God-fearing man, believed the message given to him to take Mary as his wife and to accept the child in her womb as the promised Messiah. Like Mary, Joseph is a

model of faith for us. He is a faithful witness and servant of God's unfolding plan of redemption. Are you willing to trust and obey the Lord as Mary and Joseph did?

Friday, September 9 ~ Twenty-Third Week in Ordinary Time

Saint Peter Claver, Priest

Holy Gospel: Luke 6:39-42 Jesus told his disciples a parable: “Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will

be like his teacher. Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own? How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove that splinter in your eye,’

when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! Remove the wooden

beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother’s eye.”

Meditation: Have you wondered why is judgmentalism and a critical mind and spirit so rampant today, even among persons of faith? Part of it is due to the number of “talking heads” on cable television

programs who “spin” their views into their “reporting” on issues and news events – journalists have made

note of this disturbing trend, which influences how we, then, conduct ourselves. Of course blogs and people who feel compelled to post their negative comments and viewpoints on their Facebook pages don’t

help. As difficult as it may be at times, we must strive to “think the best of other people” if we, ourselves, wish to grow in love. The Lord knows our faults and he sees all – even the imperfections and sins of the

heart which we cannot recognize in ourselves. Like a gentle father and a skillful doctor he patiently draws us to his seat of mercy and removes the cancer of sin which inhabits our hearts. Ask the Lord to flood

your heart with his loving-kindness and mercy that you may only have room for charity and forbearance towards your neighbor.

Prayer: O God, who made Saint Peter Claver a slave of slaves and strengthened him with wonder charity and patience as he came to their help, grant, through his intercession, that, seeking the things of Jesus

Christ, we may love our neighbor in deeds and in truth. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Contemplation: A true disciple of Christ is one who listens to the voice of their Master and who submits to the skillful help of the Divine Physician for treating and removing the cancer of sin in our lives. If we are

to be guides and teachers for others, then we need clear vision, both spiritual and moral vision, and a map that shows us the right destination for our life's journey. If our ultimate destination is heaven, then there

is only one way to get there and that way is through the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. In the cross of Christ sin is pardoned and the sinner is made whole, darkness and corruption give way to light and truth,

death is defeated and new life restored. The cross of Christ frees us from condemnation and guilt and

shows us the way of perfect love.
