A Note from the Editor…

In this third issue, be inspired by our pupils’ abundant energy and enthusiasm for life and learning as you read about how they embraced exciting, new adventures both on the home front and overseas. Our pupils proudly represented Singapore and the school as ambassadors, in their many interactions with people from other schools and countries, while on school trips, learning journeys, co-curricular activities and competitions. High-spirited, they fervently supported their houses during Sports and Games Day while humbly demonstrating admirable sportsmanship. They sang in one voice, songs of love and loyalty for the country as they celebrated Singapore’s bicentennial together. Our Canossians sons and daughters truly did themselves, their families, their school and their nation proud by showing a deep sense of rootedness and loyalty!

P6 Motivational Talk by CCPS Junior Alumni Members Having been invited to deliver a motivational talk on 1 August to our graduating batch of pupils, Genevieve Yen rose to the challenge. Her passion to inspire her juniors was moving; she had rushed down after her enrichment lessons just so that she could give back to her alma mater, which she felt had been such an important part of her growing years. Our pupils were truly impressed by her boundless energy and enthusiasm.

Currently in Secondary 4, it was still very clear that Genevieve was both nostalgic about her time in CCPS, as well as proud that both her mother and she are Canossian. She confidently addressed the eager, wide-eyed P6 pupils who were her attentive audience for the session. “Thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak to all of you. It is my honour. My mum is a Canossian and I am a Canossian too!” gushed Genevieve. She started by sharing fond memories of her teachers and friends who had been by her side throughout her time in school. Reassuring her juniors that there was still time to work even harder for the Primary School Leaving Examinations, she divulged that just a month before her examinations, she had stepped up her efforts and worked intensively to revise her work. This proved successful with her all A result, a marked difference from the 1A and 3Cs that she had received in the school’s preliminary examinations. Genevieve spontaneously and good-naturedly answered all questions that came up during the session. It was evident from the line of questioning and their comments and behaviour henceforth, that the P6 cohort was inspired and encouraged. They made up their minds not to be complacent. Instead, they would have the grit and resilience to work hard in life to achieve their personal goals in life, the first one being their upcoming PSLE. Written by: Mrs Priscilla Ho National Education (NE) Show 2019 Our P5 pupils were elated to attend the NE Show on 13 July. This year, the National Day Parade returned to the Padang as Singapore celebrates its bicentennial – 200 years since Sir Stamford Raffles founded Singapore in 1819. It was significant that it was held at the Padang where Singapore celebrated its first National Day Parade in 1966. In high spirits, they awaited the start of the parade and were not disappointed as the parade started on a high note with the Red Lions doing a spectacular free fall to the cheers of excited spectators. Our pupils were thrilled as they witnessed the military drive-past. The arrival of these 171 mobile column vehicles marked the 50th anniversary of their appearance at their first parade in 1969. Our pupils were filled with utmost respect for our nation’s operational readiness to defend our homeland as they watched this display of impressive hi-tech machinery. Pupils strongly exuded the Singapore spirit as they sang the National Anthem and recited the pledge with pride. The celebratory mood was evident as pupils sang a medley of National Day theme songs with gusto. It was indeed an awe-inspiring evening for the Primary 5s as they affirmed their joy and pride to call Singapore their home. Written by: Mrs Wynne Seah

National Environment Quiz 2019 It is everyone’s responsibility to care for the environment, and this belief is upheld strongly by three of our P5 pupils who represented our school in the National Environment Quiz held at Nan Hua High School on 17 August. Rajagopal Dhurga Dharshini (P5 Hope), Ong Wenran (P5 Peace) and Chloe Loy (P5 Peace) participated in this quiz, alongside many other schools nationwide. With a voracious appetite for the literature available on environmental issues, our pupils read up on wildlife conservation, public health, alternative energy sources and other related issues. They deepened their understanding and knowledge of the environment at the exhibition on environmental education set up by the secondary school pupils. Finally, they attended talks by renowned professors in the field of environmental studies, making for an overall enriching, engaging and educational experience for our pupils at the National Environment Quiz 2019. Artitude and Musicalites Showcase & Learning Journey On 26 August, the Artitude and Musicalites members from P3 to P6 had the opportunity to showcase what they had learnt this year, to a very supportive audience of staff and students. Canvasses of beautifully oil painting by our Artitude members were displayed outside the AV Theatrette. These works of art were the products of a series of oil painting workshops. They reflected the pupils’ keen observation of still life, as well as their understanding of composition, tonal study and colour theory. Demonstrating their musicality, the Musicalite members strummed confidently on their guitars to Chan Mali Chan and You Are The Reason by Calum Scott during the recess performances. That same afternoon, the school organised a learning journey to the Children’s Biennale at the National Gallery for our Artitude and Musicalites members. It was an eye-opening experience, with everyone enjoying the interaction with the many art installations by local and Southeast Asian artists. Written by: Mrs Evelyn Pong

Brownies Camp 2019 The inaugural Brownies Camp was held on 24 to 25 May. The camp was jointly run by the SACSS Girl Guides and the CCPS Brownies teachers. The camp kicked off with some icebreaker activities that allowed the Brownies to have lots of fun while getting to know each other better. The Brownies learned how to pitch tents with the help of the older Girl Guides. Through sheer determination and lots of teamwork, all the Brownies managed to pitch their own tents to sleep in later that night. It was heartening to see the Brownies willingly rendering help to their fellow peers. The Brownies were equipped with an important life skill as they learned how to do outdoor cooking using mess tins. For many, it was their first time and they were thrilled when they successfully whipped up a feast of healthy spaghetti for their dinner. With full bellies and full hearts from the conversations over dinner, they participated excitedly in a craft activity that required them to braid ribbons to form necklaces and bracelets. The Brownies sang and danced to some popular campfire songs under a blanket of stars before retiring for the day.

The next day’s Wide Hunt saw Brownies travelling in groups from station to station to learn various skills such as how to use their scarves as slings during an emergency and how to tie knots. Games were also played at the stations. There was uproarious laughter from the Brownies as they had fun with water games to wrap up the camp. The Brownies took part in a relay race where they had to try their best to fill up a big bottle with water using only a wet sponge.

At the farewell, the Brownies presented handmade gifts and cards to the Girl Guides to thank them for all their guidance. It was an enriching and unforgettable experience for all.

Choir Exchange at St. Anthony's Canossian Primary School (SACPS) On 28 May 2019, our Choir participated in a Choir Exchange Camp hosted by SACPS, together with St. Anthony’s Primary School (SAPS). Each choir put up an impressive performance in this friendly showcase of choral music. Passionate about singing, our pupils were heartened and inspired by the synergy emanating from all three choirs coming together to learn from one another. Our pupils forged friendships as they interacted enthusiastically with their counterparts from the other schools. They also had great fun playing the games conducted by the various choir instructors. At the end of the camp, they exchanged letters and gifts with these pupils. There was so much joy in the air as they ended the camp with huge smiles on their faces. It was indeed a valuable opportunity for our Choir pupils to work with like-minded pupils from the different schools. Written by: Mdm Norisha Mid-Autumn Festival 2019 On 30 August, the school celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is one of the most popular events celebrated by the local Chinese community. It takes place annually on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month. The legendary Moon Goddess, Chang’E, is worshipped during the festival. This year, more than a hundred families from the Primary 1 and 2 level were involved in the celebration. They had a fun-filled time bonding and participating in different activities such as guessing the titles of songs related to the moon, putting together jigsaw puzzles and taking part in lantern quizzes. The highlight of the evening for the children was the opportunity to create their own mooncakes. The festival went into full swing after the sun went down. It was a delightful and heartwarming spectacle of children, together with their parents, taking a leisurely stroll along Sallim Road with their colourful, glowing lanterns of different designs. P1 Learning Journey: Exploring the Neighbourhood On 4 July, our Primary 1 pupils explored the Canossian heritage gallery, learning about the rich history of our Canossian Village and our Canossian Saints, St Magdalene of Canossa and St Josephine Bakhita. While on a purposeful walk around the Circuit Road neighbourhood, they observed the various types of housing in the neighbourhood while reflecting on the importance of housing as a means to provide shelter and protection from the elements. Entering Mattar Station, they learned about the various occupations of the people working in the train station. They also learnt about public transportation in Singapore. At a stretch of shop houses in the neighbourhood, pupils identified a minimart, bakery, fruit shop, and wet market and learned about what can be purchased at each shop. They also had the chance to observe the people working there. The highlight of the learning journey was a simulated shopping task. Pupils first wrote a list of items needed to prepare some food for a class party. They explored the Fair Price Shop to select these items, stated the reason for their choice and recorded the prices. Finally, they had to identify the coins and/ or notes that they needed to pay for each item. At the end of the day, the P1 pupils had a deeper appreciation of our rich Canossian heritage. They also understood more about the community they live in and recognised the value of teamwork. Written by: Ms Tan Wei Wei P1 Learning Journey to a Carnival On 5 July, our P1 pupils were thrilled to participate in the carnival held at St. Anthony’s Canossian Secondary School. This fun-filled event was organised to commemorate the school’s 140th Anniversary Celebration, in conjunction with the nation’s bicentennial celebrations. Once at the fun-fair, pupils could hardly contain their excitement. They relished the opportunity to select their favourite ice-cream flavour at the ice-cream stall. Exploring the carnival grounds happily, they took the opportunity to expend their energy playing station games and leaping

around joyfully in bouncy castles. Some pupils experienced a thrilling ride on the mini-viking ship while others received balloons to take home with them. During the carnival, the pupils learned to stay calm and gracious as they patiently waited in queue for their turn. Making their carnival experience come alive on paper was a challenge that pupils undertook in their English class. This writing task helped enrich their learning as they had the chance to discuss their thoughts and feelings about the entire experience and weave them into a descriptive recount of the day’s activities, using vocabulary learned in class. The ten-dollar carnival coupons given to each child were generously sponsored. Both the school and the P1s were extremely grateful for the blessing that they had received. Written by: Mrs Josephine Chua-Tan Mei Ting P2 Learning Journey to Kampong Glam Our P2 pupils went on a learning journey to Kampong Glam on 4 July and immersed themselves in the Malay heritage and culture. As they walked along the shophouses at Arab Street, the brightly-coloured fabrics and textiles which are used to make traditional clothes caught their eyes. They learnt about these traditional ethnic clothes and noted the differences in design. The beautiful Persian rugs, artistic handicraft and exquisite rattan bags, baskets and furniture also fascinated the pupils. Along Bussorah Street, flanked by shophouses, our pupils reminisced about the history of the place which was where one could find services to prepare pilgrims for haj and where Malay talents (singers, actors and songwriters) would gather. At one of the shops, pupils were intrigued by the traditional toys and games which helped children build strong bonds with family and friends in the past. At Sultan Mosque, a national monument since 1975, pupils observed the mosque’s architectural features and learnt about its historical and cultural significance. They were reminded about the diverse communities that live and worship in Singapore and how these communities play their part in nation building through their charity and mission work. Pupils were amazed to learn that the Malay Heritage Centre, once known as Istana Kampong Gelam or Kampong Gelam Palace, used to be the residence of Malay royalty in Singapore. In its Herb and Spice Garden, they learnt about the healing properties of these herbs and spices which have been harnessed in Malay cuisine and cultural festivities and have been used to maintain general health. Through this learning journey, our students had learnt to appreciate the diverse communities in Singapore, especially the Malay community. Written by: Ms Tan Wei Wei

P4 Literature Programme To empower our pupils to make meaning of texts, explore themes and empathise with others, the school conducted a two-day literature workshop from 4 – 5 July for our P4s, based on the beautiful story of Charlotte’s Web, by E. B White with two poignant themes that resonated with the pupils: friendship and loyalty. Through engaging group discussions, animated role-play, detailed text analysis and hot-seating, pupils studied how the writer developed the characters in the story. Appreciating writer’s style, pupils familiarised themselves with literary devices used by the writer, such as personification. At the end of the two-day programme, the pupils compared the original text with the film version to sharpen their critical thinking skills. A meaningful post-movie discussion allowed pupils to share insightful observations about the differences between the two media, such as how the audio and visual effects in the movie help evoke viewers’ sentiments towards the characters. P5 Cultural Immersion Trip to Malacca It was a delightful cultural immersion for the P5 pupils as they explored Malacca on 4 and 5 July 2019. Pupils soaked in the rich history of Malacca as they walked around different museums like the Baba & Nyonya Museum and Cheng Ho Museum. In the Baba & Nonya Museum, students gained insight into the life of a Peranakan family as they explored the museum, which used to be the residence for four generations since 1861. At the Cheng Ho Museum, pupils learned about Admiral Cheng Ho, a famous explorer whose voyages brought him through Melaka, leading him to found Malacca’s port. Our pupils also had the opportunity to visit other interesting historical sites such as Dutch Square, St Paul’s Church, St Peter’s Church and A’Famosa Historical Complex. They were treated to a breathtaking, panoramic view of Malacca as they sat in a rotating viewing platform, the Taming Sari Tower (Menara Taming Sari) which rises from ground level to around 262 feet (80 meters). Apart from the sightseeing, our pupils also visited Sacred Heart Canossian Convent, which is one of the many Canossian schools around the world. They learned how connected the Canossian schools are despite the geographical distance and how all Canossian schools live out our Foundress, St Magdalene’s mission steadfastly and diligently. This educational trip was thoroughly enjoyed by our pupils. Many raved about how they enjoyed getting to understand the rich history of Malacca and also the history of Sacred Heart Canossian Convent, which they felt looks like our school before it was rebuilt. For many of our pupils, this was their first overseas trip away from family where they had to be independent and responsible for themselves, as well as their friends, to ensure the overall safety and well-being of the group. Many wished for the trip to be a longer one. It was indeed an experience that all our pupils will reminisce about for years to come. Written by: Mrs Priscilla Ho

P2 Learning Journey HortPark On 5 July, our P2 students had a beautiful and meaningful nature experience at the HortPark. During this learning journey, they were encouraged to look around and make use of their five senses to appreciate the great outdoors and capture images of insects, animals, plants, and structures that they saw, with their imaginary camera. Prior to this trip, as part of Physical Education Outdoor Education, pupils had to talk about this trip with their parents, even discussing with them about what they should bring along. During the learning journey, pupils had to move across different terrain and learned to take precautions while walking on wet surfaces and uneven ground. The pupils eagerly explored the Nature Playgarden and solved Mathematics problems by counting the number of stumps on the ground and coming up with mathematical statements. As part of team building and creativity, they worked together to build the tallest structure using materials that they could find. They also went playground hopping, deriving great fun from their exploration of the three thematic playgrounds there. At the class picnic, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the packed food they had brought and there was lots of laughter during this time of bonding. The pupils had the chance to write about their picnic experience in English class. All of them had fun and agreed that it was the best learning journey ever! Written by: Mrs Josephine Chua-Tan Mei Ting

Primary 4 Learning Journey to the Science Centre The P4 students attended a fun and enriching workshop in Science Centre, Singapore, on 15 and 16 July 2019. During the workshop, the pupils satisfied their natural curiosity about heat and temperature as they gained much insight from the planned activities on these topics. They explored the use of thermal conductivity bars to deepen their understanding on heat gain or loss by an object. By applying the concepts of heat energy and temperature, students worked in groups to tackle the design challenge of using different materials and other methods to keep their homes cool.

Pupils collaborated with great synergy while in their groups. They discussed hypotheses, conducted experiments and made observations. Even when the experiment results were unexpected, they took the initiative to attempt the experiment again, demonstrating their keen desire to succeed. Written by: Ms Adeline Teoh

P2 Learning Journey to Esplanade On 16 July, the P2 pupils went on a learning journey to the Esplanade. First, they attended a performance – A Musical Canvas by Ding Yi Company at the Recital Studio. Pupils put into practice the concert etiquette that they had learnt prior to the learning journey. From the performance, they recognised the different families of instruments in a Chinese chamber ensemble. They also learned the role each instrument has within the group. Appreciating the beauty of the music, pupils gained insight into how music is open to interpretation and can awaken and inspire one’s imagination. It was indeed a very engaging performance as the pupils were busy drawing on their own musical canvas together with the performers. After the performance, pupils went on a guided tour to learn about the arts spaces at the Esplanade. At the end of the learning journey, pupils had developed an appreciation for Chinese chamber music and had a deeper understanding of one of the iconic arts places in Singapore, the Esplanade. P4 Life Skills (Fried Egg Sandwich)

Having undergone last year’s life skill programme to learn how to make an egg mayonnaise sandwich, the P4 pupils happily donned chef hats once again on 17 and 18 July to learn a new skill of frying eggs to prepare their own fried egg sandwich. From the operation of an induction cooker to the cracking of an egg and fluffing it up with a fork, the pupils had a delightful time watching their eggs cook. For many, it was the first time they were frying an egg. Looking out for their friends, the pupils encouraged one another during the session and always had time to offer a word of advice to anyone who found any step in the recipe particularly challenging. At the end of the session, the pupils enjoyed their delicious sandwiches, with many excitedly announcing that they would definitely surprise their parents with a fried egg sandwich when they returned home that day. P1 Art Learning Journey to National Gallery Singapore Our P1 pupils had an insightful art and music experience when they visited the National Gallery Singapore on 18 and 19 July. Through the guided tour of the museum, pupils viewed local and international artworks presented in various engaging and interactive formats. Some pupils used a simple viewfinder to help them focus on sections in the artwork while others innovatively rolled up paper to create an imaginary telescope to study the details.

At the 2nd edition of the popular Children’s Biennale, the pupils experienced a new dimension of creativity as they had an immersive experience at several art installations under the theme, Embracing Wonder. The pupils’ imaginations were ignited as they spent time dressing up as pirates on board a Sampan at the exhibition, Dayung Sampan, created by artist, Zainudin Samsuri. They also created unique sounds and melodies by throwing soft balls at various coloured metal tubes arranged like huge wind chimes in the installation, Chance Operations, which was designed by artist, Song-Ming Ang. This educational learning journey was both fun and inspirational for our pupils. It helped to further reinforce their already positive perception of art and music. Written by: Ms Chloe Tan

Travelling Short Film by Objectifs

On 29 August 2019, the school watched a series of four short films produced by Singaporean filmmakers. Through the programme, pupils learnt that Singaporean filmmakers come from different backgrounds and they often produce films that provide insight into the lives of people. In the 30-minute programme, pupils watched Ca$h by Tan Wei Ting, Popsicle by Vigo Toh, The Perm by Wee Li Lin and Builders by Eysham Ali. The films brought us closer to the unsung heroes in our daily lives and allowed us to better appreciate their efforts and contributions to our society. Written by: Ms Chloe Tan Ever Ready For Emergencies Our pupils were treated to a lively, humorous and very educational puppet ventriloquism show, Ever Ready for Emergencies by the Singapore Civil Defence Forces (SCDF) on 29 August. They were equipped with some simple yet effective strategies, aligned with Ministry of Education and SCDF guidelines, which they can adopt in various emergencies such as a fire or an act of terrorism. It was emphasised to all that in every emergency, keeping calm is key. Pupils were cautioned against playing with anything that can start a fire and learned that they should call 995 in the event of a fire. They were also advised to stop, drop and roll because smoke rises, so there will be less smoke at lower levels. Pupils were taught to run, hide and tell in the wake of an act of terrorism. They also learned that when encountering a collapsed victim, they had to press, tie and tell. Pressing on the bleeding area would provide the necessary pressure to stop minor bleeding, while tying a tourniquet above the wound would help stop more severe bleeding cases. The pupils were then introduced to the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and how this might be useful for someone who has had cardiac arrest to improve his or her chances of survival. This prestigious international choral competition at the Yong Siew Toh (YST) Conservatory of Music Concert Hall attracted many top local and international choral groups from various countries such as Australia, China and Indonesia. After months of intensive preparation and training, our choir girls performed exceeding well, garnering an impressive Silver medal! The Choir also had the opportunity to participate in a choral clinic conducted by a member of the SICF adjudication panel, Dr. Cara Tasher, who has served as Director of Choral Studies at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville since 2006. Using her rich musical knowledge and expertise, Dr. Tasher helped our pupils understand how they could further improve and develop their skills. Questions posed by our pupils about Dr Tasher’s interest in choral singing, motivated our pupils as they gained insight into the reasons for her love and passion for music. The entire experience of watching some amazing choral performances by several local and international participants was both humbling and enriching.

Health Week and Inter-House Sports & Games and Cheers Championships 2019 It was an exciting period leading up to our National Day Celebrations with a series of sports & fitness activities to energise our pupils and reinforce in them the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The National Kidney Foundation conducted a talk on Leading a Healthy Lifestyle for P3 pupils, heightening their awareness of the vulnerability of one’s kidneys if one does not take due care of one’s health. The Central Narcotics Bureau also conducted a talk on Anti-Drug Abuse for our P5 & P6 pupils on the dangers of drug abuse. The school also worked closely with the Health Promotion Board to hold a mini exhibition cum sharing on the benefits of a balanced diet, regular exercise and the importance of observing personal hygiene. Classes were rostered to attend the session during their Health Education periods to encourage pupils to adopt these recommended good practices. Special recess activities were conducted to focus on health matters, with our Health Ambassadors facilitating the mini games stations to instil good health habits. Following this, our inaugural Inter-House Sports & Games and Cheers Championships was carried out over a period of three days from 5 – 7 August. Pupils representing their houses competed in the level games. Our teachers and pupils had fun creating props such as banners, flags, shakers and drums from recycled materials. These set the stage for a lively visual and sound backdrop for the energetic house cheerleading led by the various houses. Showing their loyalty and support for their houses, the entire school cheered enthusiastically. This motivated the athletes to achieve their personal best, while enhancing the sporting mood of the event. It was heartening to see that there was a strong sense of camaraderie and a vibrant spirit of sportsmanship that transcended the houses, as pupils and teachers not only cheered for members of their own house but also for participants of different houses. Everyone proved a winner with the active participation and good sportsmanship demonstrated by all throughout this eventful week.
