BATTLE AT THE TOP OF THE LADDER - LEAGUE Canowindra Tigers hosted the Manildra Rhinos at home on Sunday. Pre-game saw a minute's silence in memory of Kevin ‘Cheesy’ Makin with the family parking his car in is regular parking spot as a tribute to his love of the game and the mateship he had with the players. RIP Cheesy, you will be missed xxx The sun shone on the Tigers with the rain holding out until after the main games full time whistle blew. Manildra came out strong, scoring in the first five minutes. The Tigers crossed soon after in what was the beginning of a tit-for-tat half. Half time saw the players walking off to a 24 all score line. Refreshed and refocused the Tigers roared back onto the field making their move with 3 quick tries before Manildra grounded their next and final try of the day. Canowindra eventually ran away with the game with a score of 70–30 at full time. Peta Pita was top try scorer of the day and Rob Burn took out Player’s Player. Brock White returned after four years retirement due to injury, Brendan Traves was on top of the game all day and Lachlan Watson was instrumental in defence. The Tigresses began the run of wins on the day by defeating the Manildra girls 34-8. The Tigresses had to work hard to get through Manildra’s defence but were the better team on the day crossing for 7 tries. Sally McLean was a standout, scoring twice, diving for some try saving tags and taking out the Player’s Player. Other tries went to Jess Fisher 2, Maddie Vitnell 1, Monique Jenart and Mel Rue 1 each. The girls are sure to do some kicking practice during the week to ensure they can increase their score lines with some clever converting. Unfortunately the Under 19s didn’t play at home this week and instead travelled to Molong to battle against the Eugowra Eagles. Fortunately they were still successful, taking down the Eagles 42-18. Kain Earsman played injured but was still in form receiving Player’s Player. Matt McLean had a standout game and Dylan Beer scored three times and was successful in all 7 attempts at conversion. It was great to see the return of Dan Middleton and Blake Willson and to see Jacob Devlin all have great games. All the boys worked excellently as a team in both attack and defence. Next week sees the Tigers First Grade and Under 19s at home against Peak Hill for the beginning of the second round, the first game kicks off at 12:40pm. This is sure to be another great game and we hope to see you all at the Tom Clyburn Oval supporting the Tigers and afterwards at the Canowindra Services Club celebrating.

CANOWINDRA BOWLING CLUB NEWS Last weekend Canowindra Bowling Club hosted the Zone 5 No 4 Pennant Playoffs. Four teams vied for the right to go to the State Playoffs which will be played at Orange in August. Orange City Bowling Club represented Western District, Blacktown Workman's Club represented Nepean, Bargo headed up Southern Tablelands, and Wentworth Falls the Blue Mountains. Orange City (pictured above) were successful in winning all three matches to take out the flag. Players need to be congratulated for their perseverance with the inclement weather on Saturday in the first round. The second round was called off Saturday afternoon and transferred to Sunday where all games were completed in better weather. Congratulations to the volunteers, organisers, Mick & Jazz for catering the excellent lunches provided, and the host club for a successful weekend. Also to the greenkeeper for the excellent condition of the greens, which were in peak condition although wet. Canowindra will host the No 7 Zone Playoffs this coming weekend with 6 teams competing in matches played all weekend. All games will commence 8:40am Saturday, with rounds completed on Sunday afternoon.

BATTLE AT THE TOP OF THE LADDER II - RUGBY After a two week mid season break, the boys should be fresh and ready to go into the second round without as many niggling injuries. This weekend will see the Pythons travel to Condo to battle it with the Rams who are sitting equal second on the table. With the Pythons getting the points in the first game of the season, the Condo boys no doubt will be keen to upset the Pythons' winning ways and make it a great tussle for the points. Next weekend Saturday 30 June the Pythons will be holding their annual Ladies day, and after raising over $8,500 last year towards the McGrath Foundation, this year may be a little more relaxed with all ladies invited to lunch at the Old Vic Inn. and then bussed back to the oval for the kick off against Blayney. More in next week. The boys did slack off at training for a couple of nights, though hopefully this week with a dryer track all players should be at training and starting to take it seriously to continue the momentum after a great first round. The boys managed to cross the try line 38 times and only conceded 9 tries and a few penalty goals. If the boys can repeat this effort they should be a real threat at the race to the finals. The Club would like to take this opportunity to thank their sponsors: Canowindra Produce, Canowindra Hotel, Royal Hotel, David Rice Transport, Cudal Lime Products, Daniel Williams Ag Repairs, Townsend Rural, Lawrence's IGA, Bryton Wool, Oils Plus and Ground Tec drilling. The Australian National Field Days for being Comp sponsors of the Presidents Cup. Also a big thank you to everyone that has helped out with the bus and setting up the grounds and running the club house every home game. One last thank you to Rob Ellis for marking the grounds and straightening up all the not so straight lines that boys attempted at the start of the year.
