BULLDOGSHARD WORK

PAYS OFFPAGE 16

As this September journal goes to print, the Bulldogs have successfully navigated their

way through 12 consecutive wins in a tightly contested 2012 premiership race. The Bulldogs have consistently shown amazing attacking brilliance and resilient defence in one of the most physically demanding sports on the planet. Their tireless efforts have now been rewarded with a certain finals series berth and we wish Des Hasler and the mighty Bulldogs well as they set their sights firmly on the greatest prize in Rugby League. In much the same way as the Bulldogs have performed well this year, Canterbury is also experiencing a strong year. Canterbury is hoping to close out 2012 in a positive fashion and is therefore seeking to introduce the first in a series of initiatives that will further enhance your experience at Canterbury. Foremost among these changes is the construction of a new kid’s play area

adjacent to the Banyan Brasserie. This offering is targeted for kids up to the ages of 12 or so, and will provide a fun experience for the kids and, hopefully, a welcome break for mum and dad too. In addition to the new kid’s play area, Canterbury is planning a revamped Christmas spectacular involving wonderful new and expanded Christmas decorations, together with a great festive experience within the club itself. The extensive lighting display certainly promises to be worth a visit and we hope to see you at the club when this gets underway. In these pages you will also see that we have a broad range of entertainment experiences over the next few months, ranging from our highly popular Melbourne Cup Luncheon to school holiday entertainment offerings for the kids. From the culinary perspective, you can enjoy a great night out at our “Chef ’s Table” medal winning offering at The Flame Restaurant or a quality

Chinese experience at the multi-award winning Dynasty Restaurant. In this regard, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate John Lim and his team at The Dynasty Restaurant on 10 years of fine Chinese cuisine here at Canterbury. The Dynasty has been consistently rated as one of the leading Chinese restaurants as voted by The Sydney Morning Herald’s Good Food Guide. If you haven’t already been to visit John and his team, please take up his 10 year celebration discount. Good health to you all and go the Bulldogs!

22WiTH Christmas only

just around the corner, Canterbury is definitely

getting into the Christmas spirit this year. We plan on making Christmas better than ever before by staging our biggest celebrations ever. The decorations this year will put the Griswolds to shame. Everyone remembers what it was like to be a child at Christmas and nothing reflects the joy of the season more than a child’s smile. Canterbury aims to make their smiles even wider this year with a variety of special events and guests to complement our amazing new decorations. Canterbury has teamed with Chas

Clarkson, the company responsible for the City of Sydney’s Christmas tree in Martin Place, to take our decorations to new levels. This will include an eleven metre tall Christmas tree and a seven metre tall reindeer that will be placed outside the club, an area not previously decorated. The view from the Flame restaurant promises to be a great spectacle. “We get into the Christmas spirit every year at Canterbury, it’s always a great time,” Canterbury’s General Manager of Operations Anthony Biasotto said, “But the new decorations we have planned this year will have to be seen to be believed.” Inside the club the story doesn’t

stop, with a large scale makeover of our current decorations completing the package. Santa will be making regular appearances throughout the Christmas period. He will be available for photographs and Christmas wish lists, so tell your children to come prepared. We will also be advertising a range of Christmas activities and events on our website and in local newspapers as Christmas nears, so make sure you find the time to visit us as Canterbury lights up Christmas like never before!

As the weather finally starts to warm up this year, there is a lot to look forward to

at Canterbury. We are currently in the process of upgrading the Banyan Brasserie experience so that it becomes more friendly to our families. At the end of this year we are

hoping to have a substantial new addition to the Brasserie in the form of a new children’s play area. The new kid’s area will comprise of a toddlers play area to cater for children up to three years’ and a larger 100m2 indoor playground for kids four to twelve years of age. The toddler’s area will be a safe area featuring small structures, bright colours and toys. The larger indoor multilevel playground will be complete with slides, ladders

and tunnels designed to exercise and entertain. A parent’s area will also be created directly adjacent so you can keep a watchful eye on your little ones. Adding to the experience, a large flat screen TV displaying children’s programming will ensure kids are occupied allowing you to take full advantage of the Banyan’s offerings. Special acoustic linings will be integrated into the structure so any

noise will be minimised. “Children can be difficult to occupy at the best of times” Executive Manager George Cocokios explains. “It’ll be a place where they can run around and have fun, while parents will have a chance to catch their breath.” As the area will replace the outdoor area opposite the Banyan Bar, a new larger alfresco area will be built on the other side of the Brasserie’s glass façade adjacent to the porte-cochere. This area

will feature large outdoor umbrellas and heaters to offer year round versatility. With a seating capacity of fifty and a view over our extensive gardens and water features, this area will prove a hit over summer.

FOOD & BEVERAGE

CANTERBURY League Club’s Flame Restaurant can add another accolade to its impressive

“Restaurant of the Year” award, earned in 2007. Chefs Claudio Ruggero and Justin O’Bree have now won the bronze medal in Clubs NSW prestigious “Chef ’s Table” 2012 competition, which is open to every club in NSW. The competition was open to more than 1200 clubs in NSW. Our chefs have been finalists in each of the past five years, but this year Claudio and Justin became the first Canterbury chefs to earn a medal for their menu. “It is a real feather in the cap for Claudio and Justin,” Canterbury’s General Manger - Operations, Anthony Biasotto said, “They have worked very hard to come up with an imaginative menu and their presentation was simply superb.” The Chef ’s Table competition requires the contestants to present a three-course meal for 24 people at a cost of no more than $18 per head. They also have to

incorporate one defined ingredient - this year it was avocado - somewhere in their menu. Claudio and Justin decided to use the avocado in their dessert, whipping up a White Chocolate and Avocado Panna Cotta. This proved to be both delicious and a winner, balancing a mix of sweet and savoury. We invite you to judge it for yourself, as it has been added to our Flame menu and has become quite popular with our regular patrons. Canterbury has always been committed to a policy of product development and staff initiative in the conduct of its restaurants. Our success at this year’s Chef ’s Table competition is a solid marker of the progress we have made.

THE results that the Bulldogs have had this season began when we turned up to Belmore Oval on October 31 2011. This

was first day of preseason training and it was the the day when we as a playing group cemented our mindset for the season. If we wanted to be successful in this years’ competition and get the results we wanted, it would require hard work, dedication and sacrifice. These three requirements were demanded from the day Des and his coaching staff joined the club. None of us knew what to expect, however Des immediately made a positive impact with us. The preseason proved to be the hardest we have endured. Three or four sessions a day for five days with the weekends off… Boy did we need those weekends off... It was all about working hard, being accountable and giving our all for those five days. We endured a twelve week preseason, one that no doubt has paved the way for the manner in which the team has played this year. They say if you have a good preseason, you generally have a good season and we hope our members and fans have been able to enjoy watching this hard work pay off. Des has certainly brought accountability and belief amongst the team this year. He has impressed upon us the need to have an attitude to execute the little things and the mindset to not let our mates down. He does not complicate our role within the team, but expects us to give our all and perform well for the Bulldogs. Des and his coaching staff set out what they want from us and if we commit to their plan, then we’re going to get the results and rewards we want. Des is a coach that has brought out the best in us and is someone we all want to play for!

There have been many highlights so far this year. We have put together some great winning streaks but we have also let some games slip. However, the most pleasing thing that I have seen from the playing group this year is our ability to bounce back from those disappointing times and turn those disappointments into positives. This shows our true character and a return of the Bulldogs spirit of old. One that I have seen develop so rapidly this season.

HARD wORK PAYS OFFwITH STEVE TURNER

Ben Barba has been a revelation this year and I have loved watching the evolution of his game. Many people questioned whether Benny had what it would take to become a regular first grader. To his credit he has worked so hard on his game in both attack and defence. He has also matured and grown so much as a person away from the game. I applaud Benny for the way he has

approached his football this season. Another guy who has not only become a regular first grader but also a fan favourite is Josh Reynolds, a local junior. Josh worked so hard in the preseason to cement his spot in the first grade team. Josh was happy to just make the 17, but his hard work and dedication has removed any doubt that he deserves his spot in the #6 Jersey. Josh is one of the fittest players in our squad and it is easy to see that he enjoys his footy. At 23, he is a Bulldog with a very bright future ahead of him. We have also welcomed the Englishman James Graham with open arms. Bupa as we affectionately call him, has shown Australian fans how talented a player he is. Very skilful with the ball and one of the fitter forwards at our club. James just keeps getting better and better as the season has progressed. Josh Morris has developed into one of the most damaging centres in the game. Earning State of Origin selection this year, Josh is playing some of the best footy he has ever played. After playing a couple of NSW cup games last year, Josh worked so hard in the preseason to earn the rewards he has received so far this year. This is a true sign of determination and sacrifice from Josh and has laid the foundations for a good season. We have also seen the emergence of young players in Josh Jackson and Dale Finucane. Both have been involved in the Bulldog’s system for some time and were standouts in the preseason. They worked very hard to get to where they are now. They carried that form into NSW cup, which warranted their selection in the Ground Work – Steve Turner on the attack.

New Level – Ben Barba showing that the hard work is paying off.

Rising Star – Dale Finucane looks to spread the ball.

Josh Jackson in full flight.

first grade team. As we have seen by their performances thus far, these two boys have promising futures ahead of them. There have been many noticeable achievements this season, but it has been the ability of Des to bring us together and play to our capabilities that has stood out the most. The game against Manly at Brookvale in Round 20 truly showed how far this playing group has come. We were down to 15 men after 20 minutes and for the boys to play like they did against a quality side in Manly, under those circumstances, shows how much belief and character we have. I was in awe of the team’s performance that night. It was a game that I believe showed the true qualities of this football side.

With only a few regular season games remaining we certainly know that we have achieved a great deal so far this season, but if we want to class 2012 as a success, we still have much to do. There is plenty of improvement to come and we have so much to learn together. We must continue to work hard, because we all know how tough this competition is and how good all of the fifteen other clubs can be on their day. I look forward to what lies ahead of us!

BULLDOGs Squash Club representatives Gary McIntyre, Christine McIntyre, Sarah

Nelson and Stephan Creak (pictured below) recently competed in the 2012 World Masters Championships in Birmingham, England.

The Australian contingent proved fierce with former world number one Michelle Martin, a winner of six British Open Championships and three World Open Championships making her World Masters debut as top seed in the Women’s Over 45 event. Michelle powered through to the Grand Final where she met fellow Australian, Bulldogs Squash player and former World Masters Over 40 champion Sarah Nelson. Michelle managed to clinch a 3-1 victory to take out the Gold Medal, with Sarah winning the Silver. In a strange twist and fantastic show of sportsmanship, it was actually Sarah who convinced her friend Michelle to compete in the first place. This was done knowing full well that Michelle’s formidable skills would ultimately cost her the Gold. With close to

eight hundred participants from all around the world competing in the competition, their victory was no small feat. Well done girls.

LONG serving president of Lakemba Services Memorial Club Ann Garland was recently

honoured on the Queen’s Birthday list with the prestigious Order of Australia Medal. “You do what you do because you love doing it” said Ann, who regards the award as one of the highest points of her life although she never expected to be nominated. Her service to veterans and the memory of those who never returned home led to her appointment as President of the Lakemba sub-branch of the Returned Services League of Australia in 2006. Ann has also been a State councillor of the Australian Legion of Ex-Servicemen and Women for twelve years. A veteran herself with twelve years’ service in the Women’s Royal Australian Air Force during the 1950s and 1960s, Ann has lived in the local area for 45 years. In 1988, Ann took the position of President of Lakemba Services, then President of the Lakemba Services Social Committee after the amalgamation with Canterbury League Club. She also acknowledged that her service to the community would not have been possible without the support of her family.

The Memorial at Bardia Barracks, a sombre reminder of the sacrifices made.

Ann Garland receives an Order of Australia Medal from NSW Governor Professor Marie Bashir AC, CVO... A well deserved honour.

NASHOS DEDICATE MEMORIAL TO FALLEN MATES

THE National Servicemen’s Association of Australia, whose NSW office is run from Lakemba

Services Club, recently dedicated a Memorial to 117 national servicemen at Bardia Barracks. The memorial is dedicated to the soldiers who lost their lives in non-active service in NSW between 1951 and 1972.

iN yet another honour for Lakemba Services, Ron Brown OAM, President of the National Servicemen’s

Association NSW Branch since 1999, has been appointed as one of twenty five NSW ANZAC Centenary Ambassadors. He will serve on an advisory council

chaired by General Peter Cosgrove AC MC (Retired), which will play an important role in leading the State’s commemorations of the Centenary of ANZAC, 2014 – 2018. “I’m very pleased that these highly respected people from all

sectors of the community have generously chosen to use their time and expertise to help NSW commemorate the ANZACs,” General Cosgrove said. We would like to congratulate Ron on this great honour.

THE renovations that were recently carried out at Earlwood Ex-Servicemen’s club seem to be paying

off in a big way with Earlwood receiving a ‘TAB of the week’ award. The TAB sent Jamiee Rodgers, expert TAB Sportsbet woman to film a segment at the club.

THE NRL finals are almost upon us again this year and if you can’t make it to the game, you

should think about coming to watch it at Earlwood Ex-Servicemen’s Club. You will feel like you’re at the game watching it on our massive four meter screen. Earlwood has all the facilities that you need to enjoy the game and we love it when passionate fans come and support their team.

TAB TIPS EARLwOOD AS A FAVOURITE

wATCH THE FOOTBALL ON THEBIG SCREEN

“Everyone really enjoyed watching the filming,” offered Earlwood General Manager Ken Shine, “I think she gave our members a few good tips too.” “The TAB has always been popular with our members. The staff here are excellent and the award is a credit to how well they

look after everyone.” With Melbourne Cup day fast approaching, Earlwood Ex-Servicemen’s Club is a great choice for anyone wishing to place a bet on the big day. Come in and try the great facilities today, especially a great Italian offering at Papa’s Bistro.

THE Bulldogs League Club Social Golf Club has called Canterbury it’s home since it started in 1961.

In the early days, a committee comprised of Ron Ibbitson, Max Truer, Col Lewis and Bill Piggot organised games at courses including Cumberland, Richmond, Castle Hill and as far away as Gosford and Wyong. With the opening of the Rugby League Country Club at Narellan in 1962,

the Social Club based the majority of its games there until later moving to Camden Lakeside. Golf Day presentations and BBQs were very humble in those days, being held in the old greenkeepers shed, later moving to larger white sheds near the oval as the club grew. It was with this growth that the club started to challenge other League Clubs in Pennant competition, with much success.

Weekend Golf trips were popular events, with trips to Dubbo, Leura and Coffs Harbour bringing many fond memories. Blackheath still features on the yearly programme forty years on.

Today’s eighty plus members may not compare to the more than five hundred that the club boasted in its heyday, however those members remain loyal and we look forward to a bright future for the club.

TO mark the Club’s Gold Anniversary, all players both past and present are welcome to attend the Anniversary

Celebration Dinner on Saturday October 13 in the Blueberry Hill Function room at Canterbury. A three course dinner, beer, wine and soft drinks are included for only $25 plus we can assist in transporting our senior members to and from Canterbury. To attend, you must RSVP John Khoury, our Club Secretary by Monday 24th September with payment by email [email protected] or by phone on 0404 073 307. With so many stories to relive, it should be a fantastic night!
