CANTON PILOT FOOD WASTE RECOVERY PROJECT Canton’s Village/Town Sustainability Committee and the Village Department of Public Works are launching a pilot project to encourage residents to keep their food scraps out of the waste stream and help create fertile compost for future use. Why Compost? Reduce the organic kitchen waste you send to the landfill. Reduce your disposal costs. Reduce greenhouse gas emissions from food decaying in the landfill. Create a useful product that adds nutrients and improves the quality of soil for trees, gardens, and more. How Does it Work? 1. Collect household food scraps in large covered plastic containers or commercially available compost pails. 2. Bring food scraps to the drop-off site on Outer Lincoln Street near the Pavilion (follow the driveway just before the outdoor rink). 3. Deposit food in one of the designated receptacles; take away your container, including plastic or paper bags. 4. Waste left in the receptacles will regularly be transported by Village DPW crews to the municipal compost site. 5. Residential food scraps will be mixed with leaves and yard waste and transformed into fertile compost. 6. Compost will be used for village parks and grounds and available for community use. What Can You Compost? YES fruits & vegetables meat, poultry & fish bones eggs & eggshells cheese & dairy products bread & baked goods pasta, rice, beans nuts & seeds coffee grounds table scraps plate scrapings NO household garbage grease & oil plastic & paper packaging fast food wrappers takeout containers Canton is a Climate Smart Community
