Her husband is an inde- pendent insurance adjuster, and they travel across the United States to disaster sites such as hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and even hailstorms. For the last three months they were in South Dakota doing adjustments after a hailstorm. This past week, they were headed home by way of the Panhandle to see their grandchildren. I saw her at the Fair on the Square right after they hit town, and we made a lunch date. We discussed the wonders of being grandmothers and talked of how nice it would be to have our grandchildren growing up next door to us. Lee Stribling earned the fifteenth spot in the Randall High School Hall of Fame on Friday for the learning values she instilled during her time there as an English instructor.

A member of the original staff at Randall, Stribling served 19 years as a teacher of English, being one of the first to embark on the Pre-AP track, and co-sponsored Randall’s first National Honor Society. Stribling said she was genuinely humbled to receive the award.

“It was an honor to be recognized for something I enjoy doing,” Stribling said.

Steve Williams described Stribling as an incredible teacher.“She was a driving force in establishing the high academic

standards of Randall today and has become a model of life-long learning,” Williams said.

Stribling is a rare addition to the Hall of Fame in that not many English teachers have been inducted before her.

“This demonstrates how well-rounded Randall is,” Stribling said. “It’s not just good in athletics, but well-recognized in academics as well.”

D’Ann Moutos, current AP English teacher at Randall and former colleague of Stribling, said Stribling taught her organization skills.

“We met in 1988 when the school opened and became close friends,” Moutos said. “Anytime we had AP meetings I depended on her to keep us on track.”

Stribling retired in 2006 after 30 years of teaching, and now works for the American Quarter Horse Association as a traffic coordinator. She remarks that it was time to move on when she did.

“I enjoyed my years of teaching,” Stribling said. “I worked with a great group of people.”

Texas law prohibits vehicles from passing any school bus that is stopped and has its flashing red lights activated to protect children getting onto and off of a school bus.

However, some motorists still break the law and place school children at risk of injury or death.

During National School Bus Safety Week, Texas Highway Patrol Troopers in

many rural areas of the state may be riding on or following school buses to catch motor-ists who break the law.

When a vehicle illegally passes a stopped school bus with the red lights activated, Troopers riding on the bus will radio ahead to other Troopers who will then pull over the offending motorist and issue a ticket that could cost up to $1,000.

Troopers will also be

patrolling areas where school buses pick up and drop off children, looking for motor-ists violating the school bus law.

“The safety of children riding on school buses is important, and we will do everything we can to ensure that Texas drivers obey the law,” said Steven C. McCraw, director of the Texas Depart-ment of Public Safety.

“Drivers will receive tickets

if they do not stop for school buses as required.”

In 2010, Texas Highway Patrol troopers wrote 414 tickets for passing a stopped school bus.

There were 762 crashes in Texas involving school buses last year. In those crashes, one person died and 89 people had serious injuries, according to the Texas De-partment of Transportation, which tracks traffic crashes.

She said it in such a casual manner, yet I was stunned.

She believes they get the canned goods and run, not knowing when she and her husband will return. It is a part of life they’ve learned to live with.

I can’t imagine leaving home expecting someone to be in it while I am gone.

She expressed her political

views passionately and talked about the possibilities of Civil War again – an extreme posi-tion for a Muleshoe girl.

She was adamant about English being the official language of the United States. I thought it was official.

I cringed at what I was hearing.

I was afraid for my friend and her home. I was also becoming afraid of her rage and offended spirit. From her view, she wouldn’t consider voting for a man who didn’t

address her specific prob-lems.

Her problems are not the same as mine. We may have a common “economy” issue, but her world includes chal-lenges I don’t have to deal with.

Monday, I received a press release from the Texas Department of Public Safety warning parents about teenagers being recruited by Mexican drug cartels.

Earlier that same day, I had heard on the CBS af-

filiate in Amarillo about a 12 year-old boy driving a car for the cartel.

Several thousand dollars of marijuana was impounded upon his apprehension.

“Mexican Cartels have corrupted nearly an entire generation of youth living in Northern Mexico and they seek to corrupt our youth as well to further their smug-gling operations” said Steven C. McCraw, DPS director. “The Mexican cartels value Texas teenagers for their

ability to serve as expend-able labor in many different roles and they have unlim-ited resources to recruit our children.”

According to the press release, parents should talk to their children and ex-plain how the cartels seek to exploit Texas teenagers and the risks in dealing with these ruthless organizations, especially those parents who live along the Texas/Mexico border.

My parents wouldn’t have

had to talk to me. I would have figured that one out for myself.

Even at 12, I knew drugs were bad news as well as the people who peddle them.

When related events occur so closely together in my life, I pay attention.

We don’t live close to the border, but we must consider our friends and neighbors who do.

Their problems might someday become our prob-lems, God forbid.

“I’m more of an aggres-sive person,” Brandon said. “Wrestling helped me a lot with defense, because it is an

aggressive sport.”While he is an integral part

of the football team, Bran-don has a long history with wrestling as well, with a room full of medals and trophies to prove it. He started wrestling

with the River Road Wrestling Club when he was in the first grade and went on to win the Youth State Wrestling Tourna-ment by the time he was in the sixth grade. Randall is famed for its wrestling prestige and

the many state champions it has produced. Brandon won the district title for wrestling last year.

“I was probably going to be a major contributor to the wrestling team,” Brandon said.

“I just hope whoever takes my spot steps up.” Brandon, who wants to go to college to be an architect, said he will likely fo-cus on school now that he can no longer compete in sports. He said he has no regrets

about the position in which his injuries have placed him.

“There’s nothing left to do about it, I’ve just got to keep moving through life,” Brandon said. “This is all part of God’s plan.”

Following the competi-tion, a trick or treat event will begin at 2 p.m. at the park, giving the public a chance to visit with pilots and crews.

“We’ve had about 3,000

one in the world has been af-fected by their research and efforts for healthy babies,” Jones said.

“It’s a great tie into the balloons and the joy they bring to children. We look forward to the weekend and hope everyone will come out and see us.”

“Sunday morning is a re-view of Friday,” Jones said.

This year’s event will benefit the March of Dimes, which is a partnership Jones said he hopes will last for several years.

“A lot of us have been affected by the March of Dimes and pretty much any-

by a pet, it actually hurts sensitive ears of animals.

The event returns to Palo Duro Canyon at sunrise with its final mass ascension. Gates again open at 6 a.m. for the public.

More than 30 balloons lift off from Pioneer Amphithe-atre Auxiliary Parking Lot.

letting them experience the balloons.”

No pets are allowed at the Pirates of the Canyon events. According to the Pi-rates of the Canyon website, the burners that power the balloons make a sound that is inaudible to humans, but when experienced up close

spectators in the canyon and 1,000–4,000 in Amarillo in (John Stiff) park,” said Chris Jones, event spokes-person.

“Saturday is good for kids coming out. They trick or treat the balloonists who always look forward to mingling with the kids and

In between, the “beauties” flaunted their stuff as 11 male contestants, decked out in dresses, jewelry, some with wigs, and lots of “runway attitude,” appealed to the crowd for donations to their individual candidacies.

The first match began at 6:30 p.m., shortly after the Lady Eagle volleyball team completed their practice. Head volleyball coach Lorrie Hammit was questioned by The Canyon News about what “prospects” she might find among the “talented” group of volleyball players about to be on exhibit.

“Anybody that can jump and block and play really good defense – that’s what I’m looking for,” she said. Asked if any recruits would have to pass a DNA test, she replied, “No, not at all. They will have to wear spandex if

they make the team, though.”Some of the seniors who

were warming up prior to the match were very confident of success. “We always have the size factor, but we also have the heart factor.”

As the teams warmed up, Stafford said, “This is Canyon High School’s United Way Youth Cabinet’s idea to have the event. We have 10 kids that are on our youth cabinet. We set a goal for $4,321 this year.”

Explaining where that number came from she said, “They liked the 4-3-2-1. The big campaign is ’10-9-8…’

“Last year they did a dodge-ball tournament during the day, but we weren’t going to be able to do that this year because of all the new testing. So we thought ‘Why don’t we have an event in the evening?’ and one of our girls had this idea for the boys to play vol-leyball. The girls do powder puff football. And then we thought, ‘What’s something

else that would bring people?’ And we thought ‘Why don’t we have them dress up like girls?’ So here we are.”

Many students were involved in the event, either as participants or as specta-tors. “We have four teams, and all of them have at least 12,” Stafford said. “And then we have 11 pageant beauty contestants. All of the boys in the pageant have two girls to sponsor them and help them get ready. The winner is the one who gets the most money.”

Stafford also noted all the students involved in score-keeping and officiating.

There were several ways

the students were working to raise money during the event. The price of admission was $2, but the youth cabinet also hosted a bake sale with items they baked for the event. And then there was the beauty pageant itself.

After being introduced in-dividually, the ‘beauties” went through the crowd with their jars seeking donations.

Tim Gilliland, CHS prin-cipal reported, “What they collected was right around $500 in what just got turned in,” from the “votes” for the winner.

The volleyball tournament began with the junior class boys facing the freshmen. In

a lop-sided game, the juniors thrashed the freshmen 25-9.

The seniors came into the second match confident of an easy win, but the aggres-sive sophomores were not to be taken lightly. The second semi-final was a nip and tuck game with swings in momen-tum and the lead. Down the stretch, however, it was the sophomores who prevailed by a score of 25-22. The seniors were sent to the sidelines for the final.

The final set was to 30 points, and the sophomores, still invigorated from their victory over the seniors, came out ready to play. But the juniors had learned the les-son that overconfidence can be fatal in facing the class of 2014. While the sophomores were determined not to go quietly, it was ultimately, the juniors who prevailed, 30-24, for the championship in the Dude Volleyball tournament that is hoped to become an annual event.

At the conclusion of the championship game, the Beauty Pageant winners were announced.

Christian DeLao was named Miss Congeniality. Isaac Garland was named First Runner Up.

And Marcus Muldrow was named the first winner of Miss United Way, an event that there is already talk of making an annual fund raiser. Although proud of the win, he was humble in victory. “It’s just an honor, first of all,” he said, “to be the first; and ev-eryone who will follow in my footsteps should be glad.”

Muldrow, a senior, said next year he plans, “to go to college, maybe attend WT or Tarleton State.”

He plans to major in ac-counting.

Anyone wishing to support the CHS United Way drive can make a donation at the high school office, or contact Lee Stafford at [email protected] or 677-2740.

Feed efficiency in beef cattle is getting a closer look by a Texas AgriLife Research scientist, who is evaluating both feedlot performance and feed intake to improve profitability and reduce the environmental impact of beef production systems.

Gordon Carstens, an AgriLife Research animal nutrition scientist, along with other agency researchers, has been using GrowSafe technol-ogy to measure feed intake and feeding-behavior traits such as daily visits and time spent at the feed bunk.

The technology is part of ongoing research efforts in College Station and the McGregor AgriLife Research Center.

“Calculating residual-feed intake is an alternative method of assessing feed efficiency in beef cattle, which is based on the fact that considerable individual

animal variation exists in feed intake above and below what is expected on the basis of an animal’s size and growth rate,” Carstens said.

For example, Carstens said to imagine two bulls that both weigh 900 pounds and gain four pounds per day dur-ing a performance test.

“For a given ration, we would expect that both bulls would eat say 26 pounds per day because their require-ments for maintenance and growth should be similar,” he said.

“In reality, one bull may have eaten 24 pounds and the other 28 pounds per day.”

Residual-feed intake is calculated as actual intake minus expected intake based on an animal’s body weight and growth rate, Carstens said.

“So the residual-feed in-take would be minus and plus two pounds per day for the two bulls with the efficient bull being the one with a negative residual feed intake.”

Carstens and other scien-

tists have found that residual feed intake is a “moderately heritable” trait that is ge-

netically unrelated to growth traits.

Thus, genetic selection for low residual-feed intake offers opportunities to select for improved feed efficiency without having to stock larger, mature cows, he said.

“With increased feed costs in recent years, there are a lot of folks in the industry in-terested in using this trait as part of a selection program to improve genetic merit for feed efficiency.”

In addition to measuring feeding intake, the GrowSafe system is able to monitor individual feeding patterns by using electronic radio fre-quency identification device ear tags.

Sensors capture each animal’s trip to the feed bunk and the frequency and time of each bunk visit is recorded by the system’s computer software program.

This data is valuable in

evaluating differences in feed-ing behavior patterns among efficient and inefficient cattle, Carstens said.

“We are interested in learning why some animals are efficient and others aren’t,” he said.

“We are finding that cattle with low residual feed intake actually have lower energy requirements, come to the feed bunk less frequently, spend less time eating each day and tend to have higher digestibilities.”

The technology is robust, allowing for a feed truck to feed cattle in feed bunks each day, thus eliminating the time-consuming task of manual feeding and reducing the cost of collecting feed intake data for genetic evalua-tion purposes, Carstens said.

“Without a doubt, the recent increase in grain prices the past few years, and higher hay costs caused by

the drought will create more demand for cattle with su-perior genetic merit for feed efficiency,” he said.

“In the past, the beef industry has mainly focused on improving genetics of carcass and growth traits. Most recently, the focus has been on improved efficiency, and yes, the increased cost of feeds and drought has driven more interest in these areas.

“We can now start talking about how to improve effi-ciency so we can also reduce the environmental impact of beef cattle production systems.

“Cattle that are more efficient also produce less methane and less fecal output. Several countries are currently exploring the use of these technologies to improve feed efficiency in beef cattle as strategies to mitigate the carbon footprint of animal agriculture.”

The Computer Hacker

I have recently addressed some topics that were only marginally computer related, but they were from the per-spective of protecting one’s computer-based investment. In today’s environment, it might be close to impossible to operate without a comput-er. I know a very few who do.

My “Slippery Slope” series, discussed several things that could cause severe enough disruptions to render our com-puters functionally useless, at least for a time. The point wasn’t to be a doom-sayer, but to give a “heads up” of some-thing to put into their Disaster Recovery Plan.

For instance, say someone has their financial data on their PC, using QuickBooks (www.quickbooks.com). How could they plan for a disruption of service? Hav-ing an extra pack of paper and replacement ink car-tridges allows them to make a complete set of printouts. What about power? A UPS (Uninterruptable Power Sup-ply or Battery Backup) with at least 45 minutes of reserve power could do the trick (see www.apc.com). These are simple, logical steps to take – but only if it is thought about ahead of time.

Take this example to the next level. A lightning strike or other power issue destroys the computer the data is on. Having daily automagic backups to an external USB drive makes it possible to take the data to another computer. (Keep the software handy in case it needs to be installed.) Again, these are simple, logi-cal steps to take – but only if it is thought about ahead of time.

At some point in time, the desire to have the resources on hand to handle these situ-ations becomes important. What if the cause of the elec-trical issue was an EMP (elec-tro-magnetic pulse) from a major solar flare? (See www.solarstormwarning.com .)

In the case of a large-scale EMP event, there probably won’t be “spare computers”

available. This is where the concept of a Disaster Recov-ery Plan leaves the realm of most folks – it is planning for the unimaginable.

Enter a personal “Faraday Cage.” What is a Faraday Cage? It is an enclosure that blocks out unwanted electri-cal fields – such as an EMP or stray electrical discharges from a lightening strike. For the DIY type, a Google search will provide more than enough information to build one. For the wealthy, they are commercially available. For the rest of us, we have to come up with a plan.

Here is my example plan: 1) Purchase: a small, energy efficient laptop computer (install all software on it), a UPS, and two USB drives. 2) Initiate daily automagic data backups on the existing PC, swapping between the two USB drives. 3) Build a Faraday Cage large enough to hold the laptop, UPS, and spare USB drive, that can fit in a closet. Everything except

the Faraday Cage can be eas-ily obtained for under $1,000, set up in a day, and will take under 5 minutes a day to keep up with.

What about the Faraday Cage? I am organizing a one-day seminar where we get together and I actually show you how to build one, completely, start to finish. It uses simple hand tools and things you can easily buy at almost any hardware store. Armed with this information, virtually everyone can build their own.

Those attending the seminar have the option of purchasing one already made. Email me at the address below for information on the seminar.

This is more than just the next level of preparation, it is the next level of peace of mind.

CELEBRATING 8 STRAIGHT YEARS OF BEING VOTED BEST OF AMARILLO!FRANK’S WINE OF THE WEEK

By ALI WESTFor The Canyon News

Aaron Faver’s seventh period government class was looking to another day of note-taking and lectures Oct. 12. Instead, these seniors came into physical contact with the history they had only read about with a spe-cial visit from the Remnant Trust.

David Baum visited Randall High School to share some of West Texas A&M University’s collection of centuries-old works from the Remnant Trust with students who were learning about the significance these documents hold in today’s government.

“I think it’s a novel thing the Remnant Trust is doing,” Baum said.

“Being brought to the Panhandle has given me the opportunity to engage in the community.”

Having grown up at-tending museums where they were told not to touch artifacts, the students were only inattentive to the pre-sentation, when they had an ancient manuscript sitting in front of them which they were free to explore. Senior Austin Castillo said the experience amazed him.

“I was in awe to hold the actual document we read

about in our textbooks,” Castillo said.

Twelve documents and books were passed around the room, each rich in sub-stance and age, ranging from a Gutenberg Bible to a 1344 Magna Carta that had been carried around by a judge as a reference book. Baum described it as a “traveling law library.”

“This would have been ev-erything the judge needed,” Baum instructed. “You can even see his writing in the margins.”

Faver, who also made many comments about the historical significance of the books, described the learning opportunity for his students as revolutionary.

“(The visit) is important to the deepening of under-standing for students,” Faver said.

“It opens their minds to wondering things like, ‘Who held this book before me?’”

He continued to point out the importance of using the books as a learning tool.

“I can read the Bible on my phone,” Faver said.

“But a King James Bible from the 1400’s is differ-ent in that it changes the experience, not the words themselves.”

As a scholar in residence, Baum has big plans for the Remnant Trust’s documents, which debuted at WT last school year. He said he wants to make the books and documents available not only to WT students and faculty, but also to the public by eventually integrat-ing documents into school curricula.

“I would like the whole Panhandle to have access to these books,” Baum said.

“They would be the only stu-dents in America learning in their classrooms off primary documents.”

As for the estimated monetary worth of the docu-ments, Baum said their true value was in the ideas they

contained, which he likened to a pamphlet containing the Gettysburg Address.

“I have no idea how much (money) the pamphlet is worth,” Baum said.

“But these 272 words are sure worth a lot.”

Happy High School’s homecoming will be Friday, with the queen being crowned at half-time of the football game. Candidates are, from left: Tori Schmidt, junior; Brooke Downing, senior; and Maci Bryan, senior.

WTAMU NEWSPage 6 Thursday, October 20, 2011 THE CANYON NEWS

The West Texas A&M Uni-versity campus is dotted with streets named after students who died in the Vietnam War, and on Saturday, the namesake of one of those streets will be remembered and honored at a special ceremony that will stretch from the WTAMU campus to Silverton.

Sgt. Keith Rowell was killed in Vietnam on Aug. 25, 1968, just three weeks before he was due to come home. He left WT and joined the 3/506th Infantry known as the Currahees, 101st Airborne in 1967. On Saturday, eight men from that unit will join Rowell’s family and friends in a special Grave Marker Unveiling at the soldier’s gravesite in Silverton. The day will begin with remarks by J. Patrick O’Brien, university president, at 10:30 a.m. on the patio area outside of Cornette Library, followed by a pro-cession from the WTAMU campus to Silverton for a 1 p.m. unveiling of Rowell’s military grave marker. The occasion will be marked by a caravan of motorcycle riders,

a 21-gun salute and the play-ing of bagpipes as the men from Rowell’s unit honor the soldier’s memory with stories of the man they called “Sgt. Rock.”

The placement of the mili-tary marker is long overdue and probably wouldn’t have happened without the bond that exists between the men of the 3/506. Unit members place flowers every Memorial Day on the gravesites of the men from the 3/506 Infantry who were killed in action between 1967-1971. This past May when fellow unit mem-ber Ray Mayfield delivered flowers to Rowell’s grave, he realized that it didn’t have a veteran’s marker. His observa-tion snowballed into Satur-day’s ceremony to honor Rowell.

“The loyalty and love these guys want to express to my brother after 43 years is amazing,” said Judy Tibbs, Rowell’s sister. “Eight of the guys from his unit are com-ing from all over the United States to be there for the dedication of the stone. Their love for my brother is almost overwhelming.”

Unit members attending Saturday’s ceremony include Ed Bassista, Branchburg, N.J., Ray Mayfield, Lewis-ville, Lt. James Schlax, Sugar Grove, Ill., Mark Jones, Day-tona, Fla., James Gallardo, Fresno, Calif., John Matkin, San Diego, Calif., John Colone, Hell, Mich., and Col. Bill Libby, Abilene.

In memory of Rowell and the 22 other WT students, former students and gradu-ates who lost their lives in Vietnam, Cornette Library is hosting a special Vietnam exhibit. The exhibit opened Wednesday and features actual snapshots taken by soldiers in the field during their tours of duty.

Alumni and students at West Texas A&M University pooled their time, their talents and their money together last spring and summer to donate toward a new endowment that will support the WTAMU horse judging team.

The endowment, named the “Dr. John and Kenda Pipkin Endowment for Excellence in Horse Judging,” was created to provide financial support for the pursuit of excellence and to continue ongoing, sustained success by the horse judging team in national and world competitions.

“The endowment is a benefit because it helps pay our expenses,” said Cori Elliott, a junior animal science major.

The endowment was created by Gordon Davis, chairman and founder of CEV Multimedia, to honor the Pipkins and to form an alliance with WTAMU’s equine program, espe-cially the students. Davis donated a $10,000 gift to “seed” the endowment and has agreed to a 50 percent match until the endowment reaches its goal amount.

At this year’s Ag celebration and reunion, Davis wrote a $17,500 check to match the donations of alumni and current students involved with the team. Current and past members of the team were there to receive Davis’ match.

“It gives more opportunities to horse judging team mem-bers,” Elliott said. “It keeps the team upping the bar, and it also encourages transfers.”

Elliott transferred from Black Hawk College in Illinois and is a new member of the WTAMU horse judging team.

“This endowment is extremely significant in that there will be an ongoing, long-term source of financial support for stu-dents that participate in an extremely important student-de-velopment program,” said John Pipkin, director of the Equine Industry Program and head coach of the horse judging team. “It is a funding-match partnership with CEV that WT must take full advantage of.”

The endowment impacts the team in more ways than just

financial support.“The endowment encourages us to work harder,” said Shel-

bie Brigance, sophomore marketing major from Canyon.Davis, WTAMU alumni and current students, program

supporters, and the College of Agriculture, Science and Engi-neering will all have to work together to reach the endowment goal of $500,000 by 2015.

“While it will clearly take commitment and generosity from current and former students, as well as program supporter’s generosity, it is a goal that should be met and surpassed,” Pipkin said. “Alumni, current students and many program supporters know the tremendous value this program has for students, and the long-term professional benefit that students receive.”

Because the endowment was created in part to recognize the success of the horse judging team at national and world competitions, the team understands what it takes to continue to be successful for years to come.

“The program is successful because we put in long hours,” said Sarah Baldridge, sophomore equine industry major from Carlsbad, N.M. “We are dedicated to the program.”

For more information on how to donate to the John and Kenda Pipkin Endowment for Excellence in Horse Judging fund, contact Tim Bynum at [email protected] or at 651-2069.

Two national debate cham-pions paired up with mem-bers of the West Texas A&M University forensics team in a parliamentary-style debate on political-party spending Monday night in the Class-room Center.

The Gamma Phi chapter of Lambda Pi Eta National Communication Honor Soci-ety together with WTAMU’s Department of Communica-tion hosted Richard Robin-son and Ben Jasper of the United Kingdom, who were joined by WTAMU forensics team members Bethany Beck, a graduate student in commu-nication from Lawton, Okla., and Chris Bridenbaugh, a junior communication stud-ies major from Amarillo. The debaters considered the resolution “This House would cap political party spending at elections.”

Parliamentary style debate encourages audience partici-pation, and the meeting room was set up with a center aisle so that audience members could sit on the same side as

the debaters they supported. If, during the debate, audi-ence members were swayed by the arguments of another debater, they could get up and move across the aisle. During the course of the debate, audience members were invited to call out “for shame” when they disagreed with what was being said or cheered the speaker on by saying, “hear, hear.” At the conclusion of the debate, there was a “division of the house” in which audience members voted for which team won the debate.

Robinson is a recent graduate from Manchester University. He was awarded a first-class degree in law and will commence practice as commercial solicitor in 2013. Jasper graduated from Wadham College, Oxford with a first-class degree in modern history and an M.Phil in politics. He just completed the Graduate Diploma in Law and is due to start work as a lawyer at Clifford Chance next August. He served as president of his college’s radically liberal stu-dent union, head of coaching at the Oxford Union for three years and tutored first-year undergraduates.

The UK debate tour was organized by the Committee on International Debate and Discussion of the National Communication Associa-tion. WTAMU is one of four universities in Texas chosen as a tour host.

The new school year is going well so far! We have new subjects, and we’re learning fast. Jennifer Jolly, a fifth grade language arts teacher, comments on this. “The class is good so far,” she claims. “They’re adjusting to the new people and friends. Also, I’m proud of my class because they are learning a lot, and they’re fun to know.”

We asked her what we

would be learning this week. She was very open with this following conversation. “We’ll mainly be focusing on non-fiction and poetry,” she informed us. Sure enough, this is a fantastic year!6B

In sixth grade language arts classes, students are learning about story elements in fictional stories and con-tinue reading the novel “Bud Not Buddy” or other novels. They are also continuing to read thirty minutes a night and summarize their reading

using the summary technique who wanted what but so and. In science, students learned about several elements.

In social studies, students are beginning to learn things about South America, such as types of government, the economy, and the various cultures. In math, students are working on their fraction unit.

Two students from each homeroom were invited to view a live webcast of the author James Patterson in the library Oct. 13. Patterson is a

well-known author of novels such as the highly praised “Maximum Ride” novels. It was a great experience for all involved.

The University Interscholastic League selected two Can-yon ISD coaches as National Federation Coaches Associa-tion State Coaches of the Year. Canyon High School girls’ cross country and track coach Ray Baca was selected as the NFCA State Coach of the Year in the area of girls’ cross country and Randall High School wrestling coach David Quirino was selected as the NFCA State Coach of the Year in wrestling.

As a result, both coaches are automatically nominated for sectional coach of the year and will be considered along with other coaches in their section for this honor. States in-cluded along with Texas competing for sectional honors are Arkansas, New Mexico, Colorado, and Oklahoma. Sectional winners will be nominated for national coach of the year.

CISD coaches named Coach of the Year

Both CISD schools saw their bands advance to Area “A” marching band compe-tition with First Division ratings at the Region I UIL marching band competition at Dick Bivins Stadium in Amarillo last Saturday.

The region marching con-test is the first in a series of contests that eventually lead the best bands in the state to the UIL State Marching Band Contest in November. This year, all 1A, 2A, and 4A bands who receive a First Division at the region level advance to the Area “A” Marching Band Contest. 4A bands from the Panhandle, Lubbock, El Paso, Wichita Falls, Midland/Odessa, and the Northwest Metroplex Area will compete in Odessa at Ratliff Stadium on October 29. The top bands at the area contest earn a trip to San An-tonio to perform at the UIL State Marching Band Contest held at the Alamodome.

The Lady Raiders clinched the 3-4A district championship Tuesday evening as they traveled to Dumas and toppled the Demonettes 26-24, 14-25, 32-30, 25-23. The Lady Raiders, ranked No.2 in the state polls, and the Demon-ettes, ranked No. 5 in the same poll, showed why the pollsters have kept two 3-4A times in the top five for most of the season. If the

two teams continue on their winning ways, they are likely to meet one more time in the regional finals for a ticket to the state tournament.

Katie Dudding led the Lady Raiders in kills with 15 while Libby Strickland was close on her heels with 13. Macy Ramsey had seven blocks with Dudding and Sydney Harlan adding five apiece. Madalyn Pepper made 18 digs with Dudding

adding 15 to the total. Whit-ney Hunt registered 44 as-sists. Harlan scored four aces and Dudding added three.

The Lady Raiders are now 36-4 overall and 12-0 with two matches remaining in the regular season. Their next match will be at home against Hereford Saturday at 3 p.m.

When asked about the per-formance at the region con-test, Randall band director David Wright said, “It was a pretty good performance; our best one so far. But there’s still a lot of work to do before the area contest.

“The judges really seemed to enjoy our performance,” Wright added. “They ap-plauded our students’ hard work and attention to detail.”

Canyon’s band director, Michael Sheffield, said, “We really won the crowd over. This is a very entertaining show, and the audience bought into it.

“We had a fantastic performance, but we’re still working on tightening up. The kids love this show and all that it stands for. We’ve got more we can do with it.”

The Canyon High School

Soaring Pride band received their 11th consecutive first division rating at Saturday’s contest, winning first divi-sion ranking from all of the judges. The band’s show “La Fiesta Mexicana” is dedicated to the memory of Steve Baird, the late horn instructor and band director at Canyon.

The line up for the Area “A” Marching Contest will not be complete until all participating regions wrap up their contests next weekend. “I expect to see some great bands at the area contest,” says Wright. “It’s always an exciting contest!”

Canyon’s Soaring Pride band will compete in the ZIA Marching Band Fiesta in Albuquerque, N.M., as a final warm-up before the UIL Area marching contest in Odessa on October 29.

The Randall-based Raiders won the Amarillo Junior Team Tennis league’s 14-and-under intermediate championship as play wrapped up Sunday at the Amarillo National Tennis Cen-ter and Canyon High School.

Coach Shirley Blank’s Raid-ers finished with 256 games won to edge Tulia’s Stingers 250, for the title. The Raiders qualified for the JTT Regional in Lubbock Oct. 30.

The 14-and-under advanced Rebels, with four Canyon play-ers on the roster, also qualified for the Regional.

Congratulations to Ryan Rebstock in third grade for being chosen as the overall winner. His picture was chosen to be on the cover of the 2011-2012 directory. Other winners include: Jaylen Reed, Madison Weber, Kennedy Moore, Sterling Boyles, Jett Martin, Makylla Stocker, Kashlee Dickinson, Jeff Zheng, Derrek Clements, Laci Lightfoot, Elijah Kelley, Davis Blaser, Emma Garcia, Pace Kear, Kyla Cobb, Shane Whitworth, Nathan Bartley, Aubyn Nall, Gage Lewter, Spencer Hancock, Brooke Chapman, Lexiz Torrez, Elizabeth Reed and Dayton Cornelius. Congratulations and great job to all of the winners!

Crestview hosted a PTA Reflections workshop Oct.

11-12 to encourage students to use their creative side. Each year, students are given a Reflections theme and encouraged to draw, write, photograph, sing, video or dance to reflect the current theme. This years theme, “Diversity Means…”, really got the student’s creative juices flowing. Each student present at the workshop had the opportunity to create an original work of art to reflect the theme. Each entry will later be judged and have the opportunity to move on to compete at the Council, State and even National level. The Reflections program is an an-nual National PTA sponsored event, which promotes the arts in the school. The dead-line for entries is Oct. 31.

For the month October the school is collecting baby items for Canyon Care Net Pregnancy Center.

Students are reminded to bring new or gently used stuffed toys for the collection tubs to benefit the Evelyn Rivers Christmas project.

Today is Extended Thurs-day with faculty on site in the library to help students with coursework after school. Tomorrow is the first pep rally for the CJHS Eagles and Lady Eagles at 2:45p.m. in the big gym.

Parents are welcome to join the cheers, introduction of football/volleyball/cross country/tennis teams, band performance, skits, competi-tions and overall mayhem. You don’t need a slide-rule to figure the birthday of math teacher, Mrs. DeDe Cum-mins on Tuesday. Mrs. Ella Johnson’s speech students

CJH(Continued from Page 7)

vowed a 24-Hour Silence Pledge to polish their listen-ing skills. Students were only allowed to use nonverbal communication (unless ex-empted by teacher or coach) as they went through their daily schedule.

The drama was high as many students didn’t believe they could succeed. It seems the hardest time to comply was during lunch and when-ever the person they had a “crush” on spoke to them. The teaching unit stressed the importance of keen listening and effective interchange.

PLC speaker for Monday morning will be Officer Me-drano with weighty informa-tion and consequential revela-tions about drug and alcohol use and abuse in our area.

Tonight is the PRIDE program for parents in the CJHS library with Jim Cam-eron from 6:30-7:30. Tough

issues will be discussed per-taining to drugs, unhealthy trends, texting issues, and internet use. His experience and expertise can field any question or dilemma parents are faced with. Kim Peters will be the new 4-H agent in Randall County to assist students in the leadership and vocational goals. The 4-H Rabbit project will meet this Saturday from 2-4p.m. with leader, Lynne McCright (282-3627). Every year the PTA sponsors a contest known as Reflections.

The PTA general meeting will be tonight in the library before the Randall County Pride program. The Eagle and Lady Eagle Cross Coun-try teams completed their last meet at the WT Buffalo Stam-pede last weekend. The boys’ team competed with over 100 entries finishing second with lead runner Hayden Willeford

pacing the harriers with a Third place finish. Dylan Knight was sxth and Treet Allison was seventh. The girls’ team finished third as a team led by Angel Hayden in Third place, Sarah Chado finished 13th, and Hannah Yerby 26th overall out of over 150 runners. Coach Eddie Smith hosted his team to a celebratory ice cream feast yesterday rather than running the usual three mile workout. The tennis team will start off the week with a match in Hereford on Monday at 4:30 p.m. Also on Monday the seventh grade Black football team will play at Westover at 6 p.m. and the eighth grade Black team will play at CJHS football field at 6 p.m. Tues-day the seventh grade White team will play here at 5 p.m. against Dumas followed by the seventh grade Purple team playing at 6:15 p.m.
