The ladies of Soroptimist International of Riverside stepped up to help one of Habitat Riverside’s newest
homeowners when they heard about single mother Janet Hill. Janet and her son had previously lived in a one bedroom home
where the two of them shared a mattress on the floor and did not have much else for their new home. When she received
the keys to her home in Jurupa Valley she was surprised to find that her nine year old son’s room was furnished and
decorated in a basketball theme, his favorite sport. Her own bedroom was furnished with a new bed and linens. In the
kitchen she found pots and pans, dishes, placemats, silverware and a dining room table and chairs. The final surprise was a
brand new washer and dryer set, complete with detergent!

CAP Veteran Employment Training (VET) Program
Soroptimist helps new Habitat Homeowner
Mariam Plowman, a 14 year veteran of the Marine Corps, retired from service in April
2011. During her service she received many awards and she ranks as a Staff Sergeant. She is
working on Safety Policy, coordinating the groundbreakings, and helps with grant requirements.
Corey James, a USMC (OEF) veteran from Detroit, MI, served for four years. He is
currently going to DeVry University to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Project Management.
When asked why he is working with Habitat Riverside he responded, “I see the help that one
can bring to another and the joy you can give someone who is a lot less fortunate than
yourself. That’s what it is all about: simply doing something good for someone without wanting
anything in return.”
Lee Crisp, a 39 year old veteran, is originally from Laurel, MS. He retired from the
United States Marine Corps after 20 years of service. During that time he served in two combat
tours in Afghanistan and one in Iraq. Lee is grateful for the opportunity to tailor his
administrative, leadership, and communication skills for civilian employment and is looking
forward to learning a lot in a professional environment.
Community Action Partnership has teamed up with Habitat Riverside to hire three veterans as an opportunity
to transition back into civilian life and the workforce.

Ramona High School Habitat Chapter joined volunteers
from Coptic Christian Church to help Ramon, a senior
homeowner from Moreno Valley’s Santiago Estates. Ramon has
been going through some tough personal and financial times.
Habitat assisted him with painting his home and completing some
exterior repairs.
The students were ready to take on the paint day as soon
as they arrived. The two groups worked great together getting the entire home completed. They even had enough time to
help a neighbor whose home had been painted earlier in the year with her patio lattice. Ramon thanked both groups for
painting his home and appreciated the repairs that were completed for him. Coptic Christian Church and Ramona
Chapter volunteers, thank you for giving Ramon “A Brush With Kindness.”
