Amorphous Metal Casting Complex Geometries in High Volumes


Amorphous Metal Casting, also known as Bulk Metallic Glass (BMG), is capable of

producing complex geometries in high volumes using multi-cavity tooling and a

proprietary robust low cycle time process.

• Our most common alloys are Zirconium-based.

– American made by Materion, a global leader in performance alloys.

The advantages of Amorphous Metal Casting

• Amorphous metal parts come out of the mold in a useable state and do not require

expensive sintering binder removal or stress relieving

• Cast tolerances can easily be +/- 0.001”

• Extremely limited shrinkage (roughly 0.2%)

• Almost-optical level as cast surface finish

• Unparalleled elasticity with hardness comparable to tool steel (54c)

• 1.46 times the strength to weight of titanium

• Salt spray tested corrosion resistance comparable to 300 series stainless steel

Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) is a technology

that uses a fiber optic laser to fuse together layers of

metal powder.

• The parts are built up or grown additively, layer

by layer, to create a dense end product.

• Depending on the application, there are

recommended options for material condition:

– Stress-relief, Solution Heat Treat

– Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP)

The correct combination of conditioning strategies

coupled with the correct build strategy can bring

material properties to a high of 96% dense compared

to billet form

Precision Machining Highly Accurate DMG and Makino 5+ Axis Machines


Visser Precision is much more than a conventional machine shop.

• We tackle the difficult alloys

• All machine tools are highly accurate DMG and Makino 5+ axis machines

• All tooling is preset and balanced offline prior to program run

• All tool path is simulated, then the simulated results are compared to models

• All jobs are palletized for in-process inspection capabilities

• We employ Erowa automation to increase spindle on-time and decrease the

need for additional operators

Advanced manufacturing capabilities require advanced inspection.

Quality and inspection are key to advanced manufacturing—and advanced

metrology and inspection capability set Visser Precision above its competition.

Developing and commercializing an advanced manufacturing process as complex as

amorphous metal casting required significant investment in material inspection

equipment. Our investment has also proven to complement powder-based

processes like our additive manufacturing program.

Our ability to dissect completed builds, and understand part densities from both cast

and additive processes is second to none. Even more critical to the additive process,

we are able to inspect powder size and shape from lot to lot before builds begin.

Lastly, our MTS test rig allows us not only to qualify and compare batches of cast

parts but also preform destructive test to additive build plate coupons.
