Capabilities in SPread Spectrum Signal Exploitation

General Activities

Signal Science undertakes projects pertaining toNational Defense in areas il1\"oh'ing:

• Definition of the target signal em·ironment.

• Development of signal processing algorithmsapplicable to spread spectrum signalexploitation.

• Analysis of spread spectrum signals such asdirect sequence spread spectrum. frequency hop,and other formats.

• Laboratory and field testing of spread spectrumsignal detection algorithms and systems.

• Evaluation of advanced spread spectrum detection and processing concepts.

Our breadth of experience in field testing underreal-world conditions places us at the forefront ofknowledge in spread spectrum signal exploitationtechniques that ,,·ark. Our staff comprises aunique expertise achieyable only [rom many yearsof activity "'ith DoD projects requiring robustsolutions to spread spectrum signal exploitationproblems in the field.

Signal Science's approach to ne'" spread spectrumsignal exploitation problems encompasses theory, development, laboratory demonstration and fieldtesting. In addition to our full-time staff, \\'eretain nationally recqgnized experts as consultants. Our library of spread spectrum signalsmasked by various types of Rf interference(recorded on analog tape) enables us to carry outlaboratory demonstrations "'hich represent realworld conditions before taking a system to thefield. Our library of computer algorithms permitseasy configuration of spread spectrum signaleXploitation approaches so that algorithm performance can be evaluated prior to capital outlays for

expensive spread spectrum hard\,·,ue.

The spread spectrum signal exploitationapproaches generally permit a confIguration ofcommercial equipment driven by a suitable minicomputer for maximum versatility. By implementing a test bed configured with commercialhardware, our customers realize significant savings in hardware costs, development time, maintenance support and documentation. Primarycomponents for most test bed configurations willinclude:

• RF Receiver

• Spectrum Analyzer

• Signal Conditioner

• Computer/Controller, with Peripherals

• Analog Recording Equipment (Optional)

General Description

The Signal Science SSDS-ll Spread SpectrumTest Bed is a computer-dri,-en system \\-hichdetects Bi-Phase Shift Keyed (BPSK) and QuadPhase Shift Keyed (QPSK) signals. The SSDS-Ilsearches a programmed RF band and performson-line signal processing to detect BPSK andQPSK spread spectrum signals. Cse of standardcommercial receiving equipment accommodatesthe specific RF band and BPSK/QPSK clock ratesunique to user application.

In the SSDS-ll, computer control permits RFsearch functions to be carried out automaticalh

and unattended. Search parameters, programmedfor specific user applications, are retrieyed fromdigital storage and used by the Computer/Controller to set Receiver and Spectrum A.nahzer controls. The Signal Conditioner transforms receivedsignals for processing by built-in features of theSpectrum Analyzer and computer soft,,-are. Thecombined processing of signal data b\ the Spectrum Analyzer and Computer/Controller yieldon-line detection alarms and produce digitalrecords of detected signal parameters.

Software for the SSDS-ll permits optimizing thesearch strategies for different user applications, such as BPSK and QPSK detection where signalto-noise, signal-to-interference, and clock ratesvary in different RF search bands.

Physical DescriPtionThe SSDS-II occupies one full-sized or two halfheight equipment racks and is easily transportablefor field applications. Once configured for its specific applications, no cable changes are required tooperate the system. The SSDS-ll operates oneither 110 VAC, 60 Hz or 400 Hz. Remote control

modes of the Receiver and Spectrum Analyzer areaccessed by the CPIB and other standard bussesthrough commercially available bus interfaceunits.
