Client:Mackay Sugar Limited

Principal Contractor:Vassallo Constructions

Vassallo ConstructionsPh (07) 4968 0068www.vassallo.com.au

As part of Mackay Sugar Cogeneration construction, the Marian mill required bagasse and mud ash pads to be constructed for surplus product. Set on seven hectares of poor ground Vassallo Construction completed this bulk earthworks project in time for their crushing season. The client made some significant increases to the scope during construction including the installation of a fire main and relocation of fill from a different mill, all which Vassallo Constructions were able to successfully provide within the timeframes required.

11

Oonooie Dunder Storage

Client:CSR

Principal Contractor:Vassallo Constructions

Vassallo ConstructionsPh (07) 4968 0068www.vassallo.com.au

This project called for a superior finish to earthworks to enable a protective cover to be installed. This cover was attached to a concrete filled anchor, trenched into the dam wall. The dam capacity is approximately 100 mega litres.

12

Kelly’s Dam

Client:

Principal Contractor:Vassallo Constructions

Vassallo ConstructionsPh (07) 4968 0068www.vassallo.com.au

inhouse design and construction of a 110mL farm dam plus a 10mL sump for flood harvesting. Particular attention was taken when geological testing found a substrata of a sand deposit under an overlaying clay strata. The base of the dam was thoroughly ripped cultivated and blended to ensure that no sand lenses extended into the base of the dam. The dam functions exactly as designed with no leakage

13

Borg’s Dam

Client:

Principal Contractor:Vassallo Constructions

Vassallo ConstructionsPh (07) 4968 0068www.vassallo.com.au

inhouse design and construction of a 200mL ring tank used as an irrigation storage dam. The dam was situated on an old creek bed and particular attention was paid to the bottom of the impervious clay core extending below the old creek bed (approx 8 metres deep) to ensure the integrity of the Dam. This dam functions exactly as designed with no leakage.

14

MARIAN MILL - MOLASSES STORAGE

Client:

Principal Contractor:Vassallo Constructions

Vassallo ConstructionsPh (07) 4968 0068www.vassallo.com.au

The molasses storage tank had a 2mm liner installed and was covered with a 2.5mm bladder anchored to a concrete perimeter beam. A pump pit and leakage inspection pit were also constructed. A megaflo drainage grid and other associated pipework was installed within the bladder structure.

15

MACKAY HARBOUR - MOLASSES TANKS

Client:North QLD Bulk Ports

Principal Contractor:Vassallo Constructions

Vassallo ConstructionsPh (07) 4968 0068www.vassallo.com.au

As part of their overall upgrade to their offshore molasses delivery system, Mackay Sugar engaged Vassallo Constructions to construct a 55,000 tonne molasses storage facility located on an old residential area within the Port of Mackay. The works consisted of the removal of 50,000m3 of earthworks to another site located outside of the port precinct, installation of 200 metres of 500mm dia and 800mm dia poly pipe, concrete spillways and a 450m long concrete road encircling the facility. The existing soil consisted of a fine dune sand, which provide a challenge to traverse in road trucks, which was mitigated by using dozer and excavators to load trucks in stable areas.

During the works it was discovered that the surface was contaminated by fragmented asbestos created during the demolition of the residential buildings that had once been situated on the site. Vassallo Construction in conjunction with a specialist sub-contractor undertook to remove approximately 5000m3 of contaminated material to a buried dump site within the property. This involved the creation of a spray down area for trucks to pass through in order to remove the creation of dust.

16

ROADWORKS

Roadworks form a substantial part of our project list. These include urban residential road requiring kerb and channel work and rural and major roads to Main Roads standards. GPS and laser assisted graders ensure that road finishes are well within tolerances and have been successful in reducing overall construction time.

17

Evans Avenue Rehabilitation

Client:Mackay Regional Council

Principal Contractor:Vassallo Constructions

Evans Avenue is a busy thoroughfare and also a small business precinct. The project consisted of full width road rehabilitation whilst maintaining traffic flow in both directions and access to the local businesses. After four years of adjacent construction activities affecting the area, businesses where understandably concerned about the impact of the works. Vassallo Constructions in conjunction with Mackay Regional Council undertook extensive liaison with stakeholders to ensure disruption was minimised. To reduce the impact, stabilisation of the road was completed at night after business hours including businesses such as restaurants.

Due to a major water trunk main being located adjacent to the kerb, stormwater drainage upgrades were undertaken within the traffic lanes. An upgrade to the consumer water main, required careful coordination to ensure businesses were not adversely affected, including temporary supply pipes being installed.

During construction, illegally dumped waste was encountered and Vassallo Constructions managed the clean-up and reprogramming of the works to minimise the impact on the project.

Hill End Road

Client:Mackay City Council

Principal Contractor:Vassallo Constructions

Vassallo ConstructionsPh (07) 4968 0068www.vassallo.com.au

Located within a residential street this road upgrade required Vassallo Constructions to closely liaise with homeowners to provide access to their properties during construction. This was compounded by extremely poor subgrade that required lime stabilisation however Vassallo Constructions managed to keep disruptions to a minimum. Works also included drainage upgrades, cement treated base course, kerb, asphalt, guardrail, footpaths and line marking activities.

19

Archibald Street/Paradise Street Roundabout

Client:Mackay Regional Council

Principal Contractor:Vassallo Constructions

Archibald Street is one of the two main access point into the Paget industrial centre and is a designated B-Double truck route. Consequently it services a large volume of the precinct traffic both day and night.

Vassallo Constructions approach to traffic management was critical to the successful delivery of the project and an innovative “elongated roundabout” solution was utilised to maintain traffic flow without the impact of traffic controllers or signals and hence minimise disruption during construction. Night works were also utilised to reduce the effect on traffic for parts of the project.

The project provided a number of other challenges including high quantities of underground services (including those not known about), 1350mm dia stormwater duplication, poor subgrades, complicated pavement structures and large landscaped areas.

Client:Mackay Regional Council

Principal Contractor:Vassallo Constructions

Mackay Regional Council commissioned Vassallo Constructions to undertake environmental remediation on a disused landfill site. The proposal accepted by Council entailed profiling the site, capping with a Geosynthetic clay material and then overlaying with an imported clay layer to form an impervious cover to an area approximately 176,000m2. A leachate trench was installed at the perimeter to prevent the escape of any contaminants. The methodology submitted in the alternate tender represented a considerable saving for the council with no comprise in the final results. Heavy machinery utilised GPS guidance to ensure precise conformance to design and minimum cover tolerances. This project was also a finalist in the 2013 CCF Earth Awards.
