Skills DevelopmentIn Collaboration with Construction Skills Queensland J M Kelly have initiated an Apprentice CoordinatorProgram to address our ongoing commitment to skills development and the positive impact such a programhas on the community at large.

Tim O’Connor, Apprentice Coordinator

Tim has a trade­based background, completing his carpentry apprenticeship three decades ago.He delivers all in­house training for JMK carpentry apprentices. Tim overseas / coordinatestraining for all trade apprentices, and has Bachelor of Building Design in Engineering (CQU).

Many of the contracts that J M Kelly undertake employ back to backrequirements for their subcontractors to meet the same high level oftraining and apprentice involvement as they do themselves. Thisapproach leads to an anticipated apprentice and trainee workforce ofaround 10% across their projects, with around 80 apprenticesemployed locally by the group.

J M Kelly continue to meet and exceed Queensland GovernmentApprentice Training Requirements, averaging 30% above thestipulated training compliance requirements over the last two years.

Recognising that today’s workers are tomorrow’s leaders, J M Kellyrecently sponsored 35 employees to undertake Diploma of ProjectManagement studies in partnership with a Registered TrainingOrganisation. Participants were a diverse group including apprentices,trades, estimators, project managers and contract administrators.JMK continue to promote training and self­improvement within theirgroup culture.

The group continues to be a critical stakeholder in the QueenslandTraining System. Their policy provides equal opportunity for allemployees including but by no means limited to young people, casualworkers, people with disabilities, women, people in remotecommunities and people from ethnic and linguistically diversecommunities.

Two current areas of specific focus are:

Environmentally Sustainable Design and Construction

J M Kelly Project Builders actively seek to integrate Environmental Design Principals into all of theirprojects. Whether or not an individual project is to be delivered under an Environmentally SustainableDesign rating system, JMK will aim to incorporate local materials and manpower on all of their projectsleading to a reduced carbon footprint as well as making use of nil or low cost impact systems such as lowvolatile organic compound materials, low energy lighting, energy efficient ventilation and cooling and waterefficient fittings and systems.

J M Kelly maintain a fully developed Environmental Management Plan and have an experienced GreenBuilding Council of Australia Approved Professional within their management team. Development of anInternational Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) accredited Environmental Management System and anincreased involvement in Environmentally Designed projects are amongst J M Kelly’s principal strategicgoals.

Building Information Modelling

J M Kelly Project Builders are excitedby the ongoing advances in BuildingInformation Modelling (BIM) softwareand are focused on developingindustry and client relations with aview to enhance and improve currentpractices and enable early projectparticipation. Participation that willlead to effective provision of specialistadvice including time and costestimation allowing the effectivedevelopment of four dimensionalmodelling.

Reduced tender costs and overheadsarising from long term industrypartnerships will allow  J M Kelly to retain and improve their competitive edge whilst providing clients withcost effective development solutions and early budget, time and build­ability advice and risk mitigation.

In 2006 J M Kelly invested in CostX software which is a powerful estimating tool with wide rangingcapabilities, not least of which is integration with Revit 3D Architectural Modelling.
