Operating principle
Anelectricalfieldiscreatedbetween2electrodesonthefrontfaceofthesensor.Theseelectrodesconstituteacapacitorwithacapacitanceof:C = e0 * er*A/dwhere:e0=8.854187pF/m(permittivityinfreespace)er:relativepermittivityofthematerialpresentbetweenthe2electrodesA:dimensionsofelectrodesd:distancebetweenelectrodes
Allmaterialswhereer>2willbedetected.
Whenanobjectofanymaterial(er>2)passesthesensingfaceofthesensor,itmodifiesthecouplingcapacitance(C1).Thisvariationincapacitance(C1>C0)instigatesthestartingoftheoscillatorwhich,inturn,causestheoutputdrivertooperateandprovidesanoutputsignal.
Types of sensor Sensors flush mountable in support
Sensingface
Thespecialfeatureoftheseversionsistheshapeoftheelectricalfieldwhichisrectilinearandconfinedwithinthedimensionsoftheproduct.Cylindricalandblocktypemodelsusedforthedetectionofinsulatedmaterials(wood,plastic,cardboard,glass…),conductivematerials(metal…)orliquidthroughaninsulatedpartition(glass,plastic…)withamaximumthicknessof4mm.
Theseproductsarerecommendedfor: - comparativelyshortdetectiondistances, - applicationsrequiringflushmountingofthesensor, - detectionthroughapartition(example:detectionofglassthroughcardboard), - sidebysidemounting.
Sensors non flush mountable in supportCylindricalmodels(plasticcase).Thesphericalshapeoftheelectricalfieldenablesdetectionofanytypeofmaterialwhetheritbesolid,liquid,granular…(metal,water,oil,plasticpellets,powder,flour…).Detectioncanbeachievedthroughapartitionorbydirectcontact(immersion)oftheactivesurfacewiththeobjecttobedetected.Distancestobeadheredtoaroundthesensingface.(Seecharacteristicspage15).

Operating distancesTheoperatingdistanceofthesensorisrelatedtothedielectricconstant(er)oftheobjectmaterialtobedetected.Thehigherthevalueofer,theeasierthedetectionoftheobjectwillbe.
Theassuredoperatingdistancedependsontheobjectmaterial:Sa=SnxFcSa=assuredoperatingdistance,Sn=nominalsensingdistanceofthesensor,Fc=correctionfactorrelatedtotheobjectmaterial.
Example:sensorXT130B1PAL2usedtodetectarubberobject.Sn=10mm,Fc=0.3.AssuredoperatingdistanceSa=10x0.3mm.
