CAPACITY BUILDING CAMPAIGN

For 35 years, Emergency Food Network (EFN) has provided Pierce County with a consistent, diverse, and nutritious food supply so that no person goes hungry.

• 1982 - EFN established in a 3,000 sq/ft warehouse with 4 partner food programs

• 1987 - grew to serving 50 partner food programs, distributing $403,000 worth of food per year

• 1994 - EFN purchased our current warehouse and grew to distributing $3,000,000 worth of food per year

• 2016 - EFN currently has 68 partners in Pierce County and distributes $22,000,000 worth of food. 1 in 7 people in Pierce County face food insecurity, which is defined as the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food

To accomplish this increase in food distribution, EFN leveraged foundation, corporate, government and donor support, as well as food contributions to provide $12 worth of food for every $1 we receive.

The stewards of our organization determined that in order to keep pace with the needs of our community, EFN needed to build capacity. In response, our Board of Directors unanimously voted to proceed with the public phase of the Capacity Building Campaign.

By maintaining and adding to existing facilities EFN will be better suited to serve the community for years to come.

Middle Phase • Completed • 2015-2016

• Land: Purchased a 2.2-acre parcel of land directly across from the EFN warehouse providing the opportunity to expand.

• Generator: Emergency generator was installed enabling EFN to maintain and distribute food even in the event of a power outage. In 2016, the generator was put to good use when EFN’s warehouse lost power during inclement weather. The generator started up within seconds of the outage and the freezer and cooler continued running keeping the food at safe temperatures.

• Truck: Received new refrigerated box truck allowing EFN to transport an additional 46,000 pounds of food each year.

• Driver: Hired a new driver, Tina, increasing the number of deliveries to partner food programs.

• Grant Coordinator: Hired an additional staff member, Claire, focused on fundraising, increasing the amount of purchased food distributed. This position has helped to bring in more than $1 million in grants.

Current Phase • Pending • Develop Land: The 2.2 acres of land that was

purchased will be developed as an area for vehicles and supplies clearing up space near EFN’s warehouse for the new storage facility.

• Storage Facility: EFN will build a new 2,500 square foot facility for additional storage. This building will be placed on our current lot while vehicles and supplies will be moved to the new property.

• Repack Structure: EFN’s current tent covered repack area will be replaced with a permanent structure improving sanitation and the flow of the warehouse.

• Community Garden: The new land that was purchased comes with the opportunity to provide a community garden for our neighbors’ use.

• Loading Dock: The current loading dock will be enhanced to provide better security for the food we have on hand.
