MEETING MINUTES Feburary 10, 2015

Call To Order: President Gordon Boyd called the meeting to order at 6:29 pm and welcomed the 39 members and significant others who were present. Gordon introduced Dave Flinchbaugh, our Membership Director for 2015 and asked the membership to forward any

membership information/corrections directly to Dave. Gordon also recognized and welcomed Jim Rizutti who traveled from the NCM and was present for this meeting.

Minutes: The minutes of the January meeting, as posted on the Club’s website, were approved without discussion.

Treasurers’ Report: Treasurer Larry Lough stated that as of February 5th, the club checking

balance was $2211.73. This includes the dues from the 38 paid members and does not include 8 additional paid members whose monies have not been yet deposited.

National Corvette Museum: Master Ambassador Don Paulson reported: • The Club’s progress toward its $15,000 pledge is now $7,965 paid to-date. A letter from

the NCM was read thanking CFC for the donations toward their 1-Acre pledge.

• Update on the sinkhole: It is now totally filled with micro piles to support the new concrete floor that is now only 1 level. Also, the NCM is providing a weekly update via YouTube on the sinkhole progress. There is also a contest to guess how many tons of

stone went into the process of filling in the sinkhole. Contest info can be found on the NCM website.

• There is now a video that shows the raising of the “Blue Devil” ZR1 from the sinkhole. • Don passed out the new NCM brochure on available programs and offerings. It was

mentioned that the NCM is offering ½ price on memberships as a Valentines Day

promotion to recruit new members. • Don advised that Debra Paulson is now an official ambassador of the NCM. • Don will have the full NCM Ambassador’s report posted in the club newsletter which can

be viewed on the club website.

Special Report: John Fort described he and Carol’s 11 days at the NCM booth at the Barrett-

Jackson Auction that covered sales of cars and car memorabilia. The highlight of the auction was the sale of the Ron Pratt’s total car and car themed collection. He described it as being a “wonderful time” and the granddaddy of car auctions. He also commented on their experience in

watching their new Vette being built and said it should be considered as an adder by anyone who is doing the Museum delivery program. He also thanked Jim Rizzuti for helping make this

a memorable occasion.

Old Business: Gordon reviewed the club’s main event for January, the Southport Cruise and Dine in which 32 members participated which included a great lunch at the Fishy Fishy Café. It

was noted that it was great to see Bobby Smith present smiling and enjoying his fellow club friends. (It should be noted that Bobby passed away February 5th). Bill Bordwine mentioned that Bobby wanted to make sure Chuck Josephson got recognition for handling all issues in

selling his Vette, also for taking him for some rides.

Chuck handed out envelopes at the meeting for the Lower Cape Fear Hospice for those

interested in donating in Bobby’s name.

Don Helms mentioned that Bobby gave him 2 Corvette windshield banners for anyone who wanted them.

Gordon outlined Bobby’s dedication to CFC and a short explanation of his many activities to promote the club and how much he will be missed. Don Helms proposed having a T-Shirt as a

tribute honoring Bobby; possibly in a red color, the color he loved for his 2014 C7.

New Business:

Page 3: Cape Fear Corvettes Newslettercapefearcorvettes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/... · 2015-02-19 · A letter from the NCM was read thanking CFC for the donations toward their 1-Acre

Gordon reviewed the upcoming activities for March: 1. We will be hosting the upcoming Inter-Corvette Club on February 28th. The last time

CFC was the host was 3 years ago. There are 4 Corvette clubs involved who have been notified of the venue and details of this event.

• The event will be held at Carrabba’s Italian Grill. A flyer will be sent to the membership with all the details.

• There will be a special cake with the CFC logo for desert.

• It’s important to have as many members as possible from CFC present since we are the hosting club.

• This event is scheduled for 11:30am to start the serving of lunch to avoid the normal

lunch traffic but everyone is encouraged to arrive earlier if possible to socialize with other club members.

• It was mentioned that Jonathan (Carrabba’s) has been a great host for past events of CFC and is enthusiastic about hosting this lunch.

2. March 14th will be a “Tech Day” and Potluck Luncheon at John Talatinian’s house in

River Landing, Wallace, NC. A flyer will be sent to the membership with all the details. Please bring chairs and note that this is a social event, not just a tech event for the

“guys”. A list of names of those attending is required in order to be able to enter the front gate entrance.

3. March 28th is our cruise to the Waccamaw Boys & Girls club to deliver bags of gifts.

• The club donates a total of $500 in the form of $10 gift certificates that are placed in the gift bags. It was noted that the 50/50 drawing money makes up part of the $500 club donation. There will be a flyer to the membership outlining the details of this event.

Members are encouraged to bring auto magazines as well as magazines appropriate for the girls to be placed into the gift bags.

• Volunteers interested in helping with the purchasing of the gifts for the gift bags should contact Greg or Evelyn Stanley.

Other business/activities:

1. Tim Ward donated a shirt for a door prize for the upcoming multi club luncheon. 2. Gordon mentioned having a “mystery” cruise each month. The event planned for

February was cancelled due to extremely cold weather forecasted but there will be a

monthly event planned, going forward, weather permitting. 3. It was noted that membership dues (48 paid so far) need to be in by March 1st for the

discounted price of $25. Any member whose dues are not paid by March 31st will be removed from the membership roles.

4. Tony Caracciolo has 10 free tickets to the auto auction in Goldsboro. Anyone interested

in going, please give him a call. 5. Gordon announced that a historic 67 Corvette owned by Gus Grissom was recently

purchased by Don Latham, a local car dealer, and will be coming to Wilmington. Don stated that his intention is to restore it to its original production build.

6. Gordon mentioned that he is working on a Darlington track event possibly inviting the

Mustang Club to join us to get enough entries. It is planned that extra monies from this club event will be put toward the 1-Acre fund. More details will be presented at the March membership meeting.

7. There will be further investigation about a possible special club cruise to the NCM as a club sponsored event.

8. Tony Caracciolo has 2 Corvette books at ½ price. He also reminded us that we have a deal to get any books published by Motorbooks for ½ price, contact him directly if interested.

Meeting adjourned at 7:36 pm.

Meeting Minutes respectfully submitted by Jerry DiGiovanni, Secretary

President’s Message

To All Cape Fear Corvette Members

A sad event happened this month. Bobby Smith, a long time CFC member passed away after a long fought illness. Bobby will be remembered as a fun, energetic club member with lots of enthusiasm and passion. Bobby was instrumental in securing sponsors last year for our show t-

shirt that we gave out to all registered owners at our annual show. The last time I spoke to Bobby was at the Southport Cruise & Dine January event in Southport. He pulled me aside to tell me to not worry about this year’s show t-shirt. He had already secured the sponsors and

that CFC member Don Helms had volunteered to continue on with the t-shirt design, production and collection of sponsor funds. That was the kind of person Bobby was. Even though he was

battling with his illness, he was always thinking about the club. Two of Bobby’s favorite club events were the Lake Waccammaw Boys and Girls Home Easter Bag

Cruise and the Mike Casey Toy Run for the Marine families. Bobby believed that giving back was more important than receiving and he felt strongly about the club supporting local charity events. The club will continue to support these charities along with our gift to the local food

bank from our September car show.

Let us all be inspired by Bobby and his actions. We will miss you dearly Bobby! R.I.P Bobby. Gordon
