I would like to take a mo-ment to thank all who had par-ticipated in the Group 225Search and Rescue Exerciseon 28 October 2007. Not onlydid Cape May County and At-lantic County Squadrons at-tend, but members from all

over New Jersey. It was abusy and productive day, allthe training tasks plannedwere achieved, and foremost, there were no safety issues.Thank you to all who came.

Congratulations were in or-der for Cadets Michael Quinnand Coleman Calhoun forachieving the Brig. GeneralBilly Mitchell Award thismonth. Both cadets are mem-

bers of the New Jersey WingCadet Competition Team.We will have another MitchellAward in November and thisbelongs to Cadet TristanKooker. Keep striving for ex-cellence.We are pleased to announce

an Open House to be pre-sented on 18 November 2007from 1000-1400 hours. Weare actively seeking new ca-

dets and seniors into thesquadron, and we hope todraw new perspective mem-bers to join our great squad-

    ron.The upcoming Holiday Sea-

son will be busy for the squad-ron; we have already partici-pated in Halloween Festivitiesand Parades, and we will havemore parades to attend.I see weekly that more and

more cadets are taking theirachievement tests, and pass-ing them on a more consistentbasis. This is working proof ofthe Mentoring Process wehave installed into our CadetPrograms. Keep up the goodwork and study prior to takingthe test, if you are mentallyprepared and have studied thematerial, the better yourchances of passing and being

promoted. If you are unsureof the Mentoring Program, seethe Cadet Commander, andhe will provide a mentor to as-sist you in your needs. We will be working on getting

a Model Rocketry Program inworking order by January of2008. I will be working withCaptain Mindy McNicholas, our Aerospace Education Offi-cer to come up with a worka-

ble program for the squadron.SEMPER OPTIMUSCaptain Kevin L. Barstow, Sr.Commander, NJ-009

Deputy Commander for CadetsCadets and Seniors,

Even though I have not been down to a squadron meeting or function for the pastcouple of months, I wanted to let everyone know that I have been paying attention to the e-mails and links that have been forwarded to me.

I would like to congratulate Cadet 2LT Quinn and Cadet 2LT Calhoun on theMitchell Awards. I wanted to be there in the worst way, however, unfortunately work mustcome first!

I want all the cadets to look at what Cadets Quinn and Calhoun have accomplished. It hasn't been easy for either of them, but they stuck it out, overcame the problem areas ofthe cadet program, and completed Phase two of the cadet program. Something that not agreat percentage of cadets complete.

Use their dedication and desire to inspire you to not give up on your goals. Just likeI have said in the past, if you want something bad enough, don't let anyone stop you fromachieving it.

My detail that has taken me away from the squadron is almost complete. I hope wewill be wrapping everything up sometime in the next couple of weeks. After that, I plan ongetting back into the swing of things with the squadron meetings as well as activities.

Remember, I am only a phone call or e-mail away.Keep up the good work, I'm proud of all of you!

Another month has flown by and I cantbelieve November is beginning. October was avery busy month! I want to start by saying con-gratulations to Cadets Quinn and Calhoun on theirMitchell Awards. What a wonderful accomplish-ment! We are all very proud of you! There was alot of preparation for the ceremony, but it was wellworth it to see Quinn and Calhoun receive theawards and commendations they so deserve. Iwould like to say a big thank you to all the cadets, parents, and senior members who helped with thepreparations and refreshments for the ceremony. To the Calhoun family the cake was a master-piece! Thank you!

I was able to help out with parking duty atthe Cold Spring Pumpkin Festival. Thank you toall the cadets who came out and showed me whatto do! Parking cars is not exactly the most excitingthing to do on a beautiful Saturday morning. But itdid feel good to help out and be useful! My son,C/Kooker wasnt able to help because he was offtaking the PSATs. Given the choice, Id muchrather park cars!

As I am writing this I am thinking of theSAREX that many of us participated in yesterday,October 28th. Being relatively new to CAP, it wasthe first time Ive had the opportunity to be part ofa SAREX , or any large training exercise for thatmatter. I was able to get another training flight asa mission scanner, which I am grateful for. I wasable to fly with Captain Fellows and 1Lt. Wuerkera great team! We flew a photo reconnaissancemission. I discovered how easy it is to get a littlequeasy while taking photos in the back seat of abouncing airplane! I also had my first experiencein dealing with the media. I have to say that I wasmuch more nervous talking to the media, than fly-ing in the plane! All in all it was a great experienceand a fun day. Im anxious for the next time wecan train so that I can work on my Ground Teamskills. I encourage all of you to get out there andget involved. Learn something new and try some-thing different. Civil Air Patrol really has a lot to

offer. Please check your email regularly. I havebeen trying to keep everyone updated on squad-ron news via email. If you are not getting my

emails, contact me so that we can get that re-solved. If there is a change in your contact info, including email, or phone, be sure to update yourinformation on e-services at www.cap.gov . Ifyou have never checked out e-services, you reallyshould become familiar with it. There is a lot ofinformation on there. Finally, be sure to check outthe Wings new online news website: www.njwgcap.org On the website you can find outwhat is going on in NJ Wing, including trainingopportunities, news, and useful links.

Cadets and parents, we always welcomedonations of office supplies, trash bags, andsnacks and drinks for our hungry cadets (and sen-

iors)! If you have any fundraising ideas please letus know.

Cadets, remember that the squadron isopen at 1800 hrs every Thursday for testing. Itsalso a good idea to come early if you have anyquestions, need help. or any supplies. Pleasedont be afraid to ask for help if you need it. If any-one has any questions or suggestions, dont hesi-tate to contact me.Thank you to C/A1C Alexander-my AssistantPAO- for taking photos for me during the SAREXat the squadron. You did a great job!Thank you,

Health ServicesWe have all heard about MRSA in the news lately and I thought I would give a briefoverview and some tips to avoid infection.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) is a type of staph that is resis-tant to certain antibiotics. These antibiotics include methicillin and other more common anti-biotics such as oxacillin, penicillin and amoxicillin. Staph infections, including MRSA, occurmost frequently among persons in hospitals and healthcare facilities (such as nursinghomes and dialysis centers) who have weakened immune systems (see healthcare-associated MRSA).

MRSA infections that are acquired by persons who have not been recently (withinthe past year) hospitalized or had a medical procedure (such as dialysis, surgery, catheters)

are known as CA-MRSA infections. Staph or MRSA infections in the community are usuallymanifested as skin infections, such as pimples and boils, and occur in otherwise healthypeople. Here are a few things we can all do to avoid most contact infections:1. Keep wounds that are draining covered with clean, dry, bandages.2. Clean hands regularly with soap and water or alcohol-based hand gel (ifhands are not visibly soiled). Always clean hands immediately aftertouching infected skin or any item that has come in direct contact with adraining wound.3. Maintain good general hygiene with regular bathing.4. Do not share items that may become contaminated with wounddrainage, such as towels, clothing, bedding, bar soap, razors, andathletic equipment that touches the skin.

    5. Launder clothing that has come in contact with wound drainage aftereach use and dry thoroughly.6. If you are not able to keep your wound covered with a clean, drybandage at all times, do not participate in activities where you have skinto skin contact with other persons (such as athletic activities) until yourwound is healed.7. Clean equipment and other environmental surfaces with which multipleindividuals have bare skin contact with an over the counterdetergent/disinfectant that specifies Staphylococcus aureus on theproduct label and is suitable for the type of surface being cleaned.

If you follow these simple steps you will greatly decrease your risk of infection. Ofcourse if you think you may be infected see your physician immediately. MRSA is character-ized by a red, raised, warm, pus filled lesion. They can start as small papules that developinto large pustules or abscesses. Lesions are often confused with spider bites.

From the CadetsC/Amn Coughlin works as a lighthouse keeper atthe light house in Cape May, NJ.. His newsletterarticle is going to feature the Cape May Light-house and be continued in the next newsletter.

    Part 1: Construction

The Cape MayLighthouse was built in1859. The Army Corps ofEngineers started con-

struction in 1857. It has atwo wall, brick structurewith a foundation oftwelve feet of subterra-

nean rock shaped like a pyramid. The spiralstaircase, made of cast iron, is believed tobe one in the same as the scaffolding forthe inner wall, which is a seemingly unusualway to build a structure, but was actually aningenious way of structuring the lighthouse. As the stairs and inner wall were con-structed, there was probably another scaf-fold around the outside to construct theouter wall simultaneously. While the innerwall goes directly upwards, the outer wallleans into the inner to connect at the top, giving extra support to the structure andthat conical lighthouse look. At the base ofthe lighthouse there are three arches, andevery two stories on the way up there is anarch for support that connects the inner wallto the outer wall. In each arch, there is awindow for lighting, as there was no elec-tricity when the lighthouse was built. Wherethe two walls converge, there is no spacefor a window or an arch, so portholes pro-vide the only lighting. That concludes the

basic construction of the lighthouse.C/Amn Craig Coughlin

Last weekend I participated for thesecond time this year in the New JerseyWing Dragon Drill Team. It is an intenseweekend of drills, drills and more drills. Thedrill team is an excellent experience in drillmovements, color guard and volleyball. Theweekend is very challenging but at thesame time thrilling.

Recently I also went on an O-Flightto Millville with Lt. Wuerker and C/Calhoun.

It was a great flight with minimal turbulence,a little foggy, but a beautiful early eveningflight! I'm looking forward to the next oppor-tunity to fly.C/A1C Dylan Rutherford

Once again, the past month has beenvery eventful for me in Civil Air Patrol. Notonly have we gained several new members, but there have also been many events re-cently. The Mitchell ceremony for Quinn andCalhoun went very well for everyone, and Iwould like to congratulate Quinn and Calhounon receiving their awards. Also, I managed tosuccessfully pass both my Mitchell tests dur-ing the past month, so hopefully I should bepromoting to C/2Lt. sometime in the near fu-ture. I will definitely continue to work as hard

as I can to promote even after I receive theMitchell Award. In addition to what is going onat the squadron, my flight training with CivilAir Patrol is going very well. I am receiving alot of good instruction, and I hope to solo onmy 16th birthday.C/CMSgt. Tristan Kooker
