i General InfoBreedekloof

A short one-hour scenic drive from Cape Town to the small town of Rawsonville will take you to the heart of the Breedekloof valley, a prime holiday, conference and wedding destination. The area is home of 24 wineries and known to be the "fun" wine route of the Cape. Here you will find yourself close to nature and in an eco-conscious region boasting a range of outdoor activities, wine and food along the Breede, Molenaars, Elandsjacht and Smalblaar rivers. French Huguenot settler Pieter du Toit discovered the Breedekloof area in 1716. Part of the land within the Breedekloof is known as Goudini, de-rived from the indigenous Khoi-San word meaning ‘fragrant honey’, hence the name of the popular holiday resort in the area. Wineries in the Breedekloof are known for producing easy drinking new-world style wines. Award winning wines normally in-cludes Chardonnay, Pinotage and sweet dessert wines from the area.

Take the scenic N2 route from Cape Town, pass Somerset West over the breath-tak-ing Sir Lowry’s pass and discover the Elgin region. Visit the charming apple and rose town of Grabouw or carry on through the Houw Hoek Pass to discover Botrivier and the exciting new wineries along the route. You’ll enjoy the natural beauty, vast open spaces and adventurous activities of the area.

Apart from being world-famous for the ex-port of apples, fruit and roses, the region also boasts fantastic mountain biking trails. Wines from the Elgin Valley offer delicate aromas and fruit character similar to that of Burgundy due to the cool climate and slow ripening process. You’ll also find many farm stalls and individual shops along the roads in this area, many of which offers fresh goods to fill a picnic basket.

Info

Franschhoek (French corner) is one of the oldest towns in South Africa and has a strong French history and influence as this is where the French Huguenot refugees settled in 1688. Many of the refugees were given land by the then Dutch government who ruled the Cape of Good Hope. Many farms and businesses still have French names and the town’s atmosphere is uniquely French-like.

The town’s close proximity to Cape Town (45 minutes), ideal weather, architectural beauty, huge variety of culinary offerings and award winning wines make it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Cape Winelands. Many describe Franschhoek as the "food and wine capital" of South Africa. Apart from the cozy coffee shops and sociable restaurants, the village is rich in history and offers many art galle-ries, craft, interior and antique shops.

There is always something to do in Franschhoek and major events include the Franschhoek Harvest Festivals (February & March), Literary Festival (May), Cook Franschhoek (June), Bastille Festival (July), Franschhoek Uncorked (Septem-ber), Open Gardens Festival (October), Cap Classique & Champagne Festival (December).

Franschhoek Pass, Franschhoek, 7690

Cradled by the Franschhoek mountains, Haute Cabrière is deeply rooted in history. Following French tradition, the still wines are named after the farm – Haute Cabrière - and the Méthode Classique range is named after the original founder, Pierre Jourdan - a French Huguenot, who was granted the land in 1694. Today, his pioneering spirit lives on in proprietor Achim von Arnim and his family – wine enthusiasts whose lust for life is visible in every aspect of the estate.

Info

The Helderberg area includes the towns of Somerset West, Macassar, Sir Lowry’s, Lwandle, Strand and Gordon’s Bay. The area is located between the False Bay ocean and the Hottentots Holland and Helderberg mountain ranges. The vast stretch of white sandy beaches, warm water, cliffs and coves make the area a tourist and photographer's paradise. Situated on the N2 highway just 45km from Cape Town, the Helderberg is the gateway to the Overberg, Winelands and Garden Route.

The area offers a combination of nature and urban life and boasts many hiking trails, watersports and the possibility to abseil and paraglide. The region is well-known for its wineries along all major routes as well as its three golf courses and sunset cruises. The many beaches in the area is great for sunbathing, swim-ming and water sports such as surfing. Whales can also be spotted on the scenic coastal drive between Gordon's Bay and Rooi Els (June to November).

The region is home to the Helderberg Nature Reserve situated on the slopes of the Helderberg mountains. The reserve offers a vast range of plant and bird life including many protea species and an indigenous nursery. Visitors can enjoy a picnic or join a guided walk to learn more about the local flora and fauna.

The Strand is the oldest holiday destina-tion on the Western Cape coastline. It is also one of the most popular. Gordon’s Bay is home to the South African Naval College and its sheltered harbours play host to nu-

merous regattas and other yachting and angling events.

Gordon’s Bay combines the flavour of an international resort with the charm of an old-style coastal town. In summer the narrow streets and bustling beachfront come alive with the sounds of happy holiday makers.

The Helderberg Basin is also a shopper’s paradise. Stroll down Main Road and Bright Streets in Somerset West, go antique hunting in Halfway Road or stroll down Beach Road running between Strand and Gordon’s Bay. You’ll find many independent stores and shops, some modern and some who still capture old world retailing charm. Helder-berg also offers many smaller convenient shopping centres such as Waterstone Village opposite the Lord Charles Hotel on the corner of R44 Broadway and Faure Roads.

It’s not often in life that one gets the chance to create a name for oneself…The name arose from the joining of two natural elements – one a symbol of foundational strength; the other a necessity for refreshing life. “Waterstone” tells of the partnership of people working together with Mother Nature, to create something of pleasure and enjoyment. And in the process of working hand-in-hand, an amazing story unfolds……proof that great things are done by a series of small things brought together.

Hermanus and Stanford is part of the Cape Whale Coast and is approximately 120km from Cape Town. Hermanus was once a rustic fishing village but has greatly developed into a vibrant coastal holiday town today. Its location is particularly well-known as the best land-based whale watching site in the world (June to November). Herma-nus is also home to the world’s only Whale Crier, who patrols the cliff paths signalling whale locations by using his kelp horn.

Hermanus produces some world famous wines in the Hemel-en-Aarde area. This is one of South Africa’s most picturesque wine routes and offers a cool maritime cli-mate for the production of unique varieties and interesting blends.

The area is proud to have the first UNESCO-declared Biosphere Reserve in Southern Africa. The Fernkloof Nature Reserve is home to more than 1600 identified species of indigenous fynbos. The reserve offers hikes, a mountain bike trail, a wheel chair path, some wildlife and bird watching. The reserve offers true beauty and botanical significance.

Hermanus offers excellent sport facilities to play a game of golf, tennis, squash, bowls or just go fishing. The town centre is filled with many seaview restaurants and small interesting shops making Hermanus a per-fect day, overnight or holiday excursion.

The Victorian influenced town of Stanford lies 20km east of Hermanus along the route R43. The town lies at the foot of the Klein-riviers’ mountain and on the banks of the Klein (small) River. The town is known for its

architecture, birds, flowers, wine and tran-quility. The central core of Stanford is a pro-claimed heritage site. Many of its buildings date back almost 300 years with an original undeveloped market square dating back to 1785. For such a small town, Stanford offers many attractions like the Birkenhead micro brewery, Klein River Cheese factory, art, craft and antique shopping, wineries and a few restaurants, coffee shops and popular local pubs. Well worth a visit.

In a country known for its warmth and sunshine, this is a place of cool temperatures and maritime breezes, ensuring our vines continue to deliver premium quality fruit, and pinot noir crafted in a Burgundian style. General Info iKlein KarooIncl. Barrydale, Calitzdorp, De Rust, Ladismith, Montagu, Oudtshoorn & Prince Albert

The Klein Karoo is an arid landscape, where temperatures range from very hot to very cold, and is home to a wonderful array of succulents and aloe, typical to this area.

Montagu, the gateway to the Klein Karoo, offers remarkable beauty meandering through spectacular scenery and moun-tain passes. This tranquil town offers a multitude of activities such as scaling the striking rock formations, wine tastings, hiking, mountain biking and 4x4 trails.

You’ll find Ladismith nestled at the foot of the Klein Swartberg mountain range in the Klein Karoo. An impressive moun-tain peak, called Towerkop, towers over Ladismith. Look out for Stanley’s light, a famous landmark in this area. Ladismith boasts its own and unique style of archi-techture, the so-called Ladismith style. It is a simplified Georgian design and dates back to the 1800's.

Calitzdorp is known as the port wine capital of South Africa and heart of the Klein Karoo. Calitzdorp also forms part of the Cape Floral Kingdom. The village takes pride in its renowned wine industry, particularly in its world-class port wine.

Oudtshoorn is nestled at the feet of the Swartberg and Outeniqua Mountains, and is the home of crocodiles, ostriches, the Cango Caves and the annual Klein Karoo National Arts Festival. The Cango Caves, one of the world’s greatest natural wonders, were declared a national monu-ment and is one of the 10 most visited tourist attractions in South Africa.

Prince Albert is a favourite of nature lovers and is linked with the Central Karoo and the Swartberg Mountains by three gate-ways, namely the Swartberg Pass, the Meiringspoort and the Seweweekspoort. Adventure lovers can partake in wonderful experiences such as hiking and 4x4 trails. For the more discerned traveller Prince Albert offers cheese making tours, culinary experiences, wine and olive tastings.

Info

The Overberg is a great expanse of stun-ning and varied vistas and stretches from the Hottentots-Holland Mountains in the west, to Swellendam in the east right up to the Riviersonderend Mountains in the north. Follow the pristine coastline through Hermanus and Gansbaai to Cape Agulhas and Arniston and enjoy the vast open spaces of this region.

Each year during the winter and spring months (July – November), the Southern Right Whales can be seen playing in the Indian Ocean. Gansbaai is also a very popular destination for great white shark diving excursions. Experience the official meeting place of the Atlantic and Indian oceans at Cape Agulhas, the southern-most tip of the African continent.

Cross the Breede River at Malgas (close to Swellendam) on the last remaining manually-operated pontoon (ferry) in South Africa.

Discover all the beautiful and historic towns which form the inland part of the Overberg such as Greyton with the majority of its original Cape vernacular architecture still intact, Napier surrounded by wheat and barley fields where the endangered Blue Crane is still spotted, Elim, a Moravian mission and Villiersdorp, also known as the pearl of the Overberg.

Each of the jewels of the Overberg has something to offer, from the magnificent mountains, rolling hills to stunning sandy beaches and beautiful fauna and flora.

Info

Paarl is the third oldest town in the coun-try and has a considerable viticultural heritage spanning from 1687 when Gov-ernor Simon van der Stel awarded titles to the first colonial farms in the area. The name Paarl, derived from “Perel” (mean-ing pearl in Dutch) refers to the large pearl shaped granite rock on Paarl mountain. Paarl offers many magnificently preserved examples of Cape Dutch and Victorian buildings situated alongside the 12 km long Main Road, the longest in the country. Vis-it the oldest Dutch Reformed Church still in use in South Africa (Strooidak church) or one of the museums to view the history and subsequent development of the area. The town was in the international spotlight when Nelson Mandela, who spent the

final years of his incarceration at the Vic-tor Verster prison, walked to freedom in 1990. This also marked the beginning of the democratic rule in South Africa. A bronze statue of Mandela now stands outside the prison to commemorate this event. Paarl offers an array of shops, art galler-ies and restaurants as well as many wine cellars and tasting facilities. There are also many hiking and cycling trails and scenic drives which can be enjoyed in and around the town.

Mount Vernon Farm, Road R44, Klapmuts, 7625

Mount Vernon Wine Estate is a story of a family from Dur-ban who settled here a number of years ago for a change in lifestyle. That change brought a new sense of direction with Debbie Hooper becoming not only one of the few women wine makers in the Cape but also producing ex-ceptional quality wines by virtue of their award winning status. The secret is the ability to discover, nurture and ex-tract qualities that are unique to Mount Vernon from grape to the final product. This, combined with a true determina-tion to succeed, is what has made Mount Vernon a wine of distinction.

Robertson is situated in the Breede River Valley, popular for its beauty, award win-ning wines and thoroughbred horses. The Robertson area is surrounded by the spectacular Langeberg Mountains offering tranquil nature scenes, fruit orchards and vineyards.

Robertson has a treasure-trove of national monuments that should be visited such as the Pink Church dating back to 1859, the Museum, the Edwardian (12 Piet Re-tief Street), the Victorian (59 Van Reenen Street) both houses dating back to the early 1900s as well as the Powder House.

Montagu situated on the R62 at the feet of the Langeberg Mountains, together with Ashton forms a natural gateway to the Klein Karoo. Montagu is not only known for its lush and fertile valleys but also for its hot springs. Montagu is perfectly located to offer an array of outdoor, adventure and eco activities.

Be sure to drive through the hole in the wall at Kogmanskloof, considered as the gateway to the Klein Karoo.

McGregor, also situated on Route 62, just 10 minutes from Robertson, is a pictur-esque village with beautiful whitewashed cottages lining its streets. McGregor is not only a popular spot for healers, artists and craftsmen but is also a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle from the city.

Route 62 meanders all the way from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth and is a popular wine route, leading through the wine-growing ar-eas of not only Montague, Robertson, Ash-

ton and McGregor but runs through many other wine producing regions. The R62 is one of the longest wine routes in South Africa. Activities along the route include safari drives, cultural tours, museums, hiking and 4x4 routes.

Robertson Winery is an important role player in the South African wine industry and and it’s history is closely linked to that of the town. Since different styles of wine vary greatly in their soil and climatic require-ments, our cellarmaster, Bowen Botha, believes that the desired style should determine the choice of vine-yard. Adhering to a philosophy of minimal handling and gentle pressing in order to capture the natural flavours of the fruit in the wine and craft wines of exceptional quality and individuality. Ornament Gallery specialises in contemporary jewel-lery, showcasing the work of internationally acclaimed local artist Aninka Harms. Although the emphasis is on jewellery design from South African as well as International artists, theme exhibitions are enhanced with ceramics, textile and paintings. The concept of Ornament is to bridge the gap between “applied” and “pure” art. This difference is merely a romantic idea that has made way to a more holistic approach with flowing borders. The choice is now to select a work of quality, instead of deciding between art and craft.

In 1983 Gyles Webb and his wife’s family bought a run-down fruit farm on the southern slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain, overlooking the town of Stellenbosch. A winery was built, and the orchards made way for vineyards. This family owned and operated wine estate rapidly made a name for itself with classic dry, minty Cabernet Sauvignons. The estate practices sustainable agriculture to ensure that the healthiest fruit is grown and harvested.

It is a picturesque wine estate featuring breath taking views over the Table Mountain, a game farm, a guest house, the Guinea fowl bistro/wedding venue and is in close proximity to Cape Town. From a wine making perspective it is unique, being able to produce both excellent white and red wines. With oceans on both sides, the cool sea breeze is perfectly suited to the Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc process, as it acts as a cooling system to the vineyards while the sun on the hillside ripens the grapes to create the velvety taste that has become synonymous with Saxenburg’s red wines.

The Swartland gets its name from the Renosterbos (indigenous fauna) that turns black after the winter rains and is also considered the bread basket of the Cape due the large scale cultivation of wheat in this area. The region spans from Malmes-bury, Piketberg, Darling to Riebeek West and Riebeek Kasteel. The area has vast open spaces planted with wheat, canola and vines.

The Swartland has something for all travellers from leisure to adventure activities, accommodation, fantastic restaurants and culinary establishments as well as various wine routes.

Malmesbury, considered the heart of the Swartland, boasts majestic mountains, rolling wheat and canola fields in the summer. It is a vibrant and bustling com-munity and the largest of the towns in the Swartland area.

The twin towns of Riebeek Kasteel and Riebeek West, situated 4km apart is a hub for painters, writers and artists and is well known for its superb wines and olive products. The Riebeek Valley (as this area is also referred to) boasts breathtaking scenery and offers a myriad of outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling and bird watching.

Piketberg, lying at the foot of the Piket-berg Mountains was established in 1836. You can see beautifully restored cottages in the old part of town as well as the old cathedral-like church. The area is unique insofar that the Piketberg Mountain stands alone and is surrounded by three

towns. The area offers peace and seren-ity and is the perfect place to escape from the rat-race and wind down.

Take the R44/R46 through the Nuwekloof Pass and discover the charming, yet con-temporary town of Tulbagh, only 120km from Cape Town. The valley was discov-ered by European settlers in 1658 and was developed from 1743 when the museum church was built. In 1969 the town suffered major damage due to a devastating earth-quake. Most of the historic buildings were painstakingly restored to its original glory. Today, Church Street constitute the largest concentration of National Monuments in a single street in South Africa.

Apart from being a central base to explore the Witzenberg Mountains and surrounds, Tulbagh is also a popular location for coun-try-style weddings. The town is romanti-cally set against the beautiful mountain backdrop with stylish Cape Dutch archi-tecture, wild flowers and natural beauty.

Tulbagh is a tourist destination for all sea-sons and offers a true relaxing country atmosphere to revitalise the soul. Adven-turous activities include bird watching, horse riding, hiking, biking, fishing and just being in nature. The town prides itself on its offering of local produce and crafts and boasts many art galleries, museums, unique shops, fine restaurants, pubs, a chocolate factory, a wine route, olive farms and even handcrafted cheeses.

The wineries on the Tulbagh wine route add its own charm and tradition to the region. Many of these farms have been in the same family for generations. The route also includes a few micro-produc-ers and boutique wineries.

You’ll find true Cape hospitality in this val-ley and top quality accommodation offer-ings that will suit your every need. Tulbagh is known for its diverse and abundant flora such as wild Proteas and herbs such as buchu. In spring visitors are welcomed with a show-off of blooming wild flowers and the beautiful blossoms of the fruit trees. Winter in Tulbagh is special with its cold nights but crisp, clear days and snow capped mountain peaks. Cosy res-taurants, warming sherries and log fires add to the romantic atmosphere.

Wellington is rich in history and tradition and has a magical atmosphere that will captivate you once you discover the town, its people and attractions.

Wellington boasts about twenty declared National Monuments and offer beautiful architectural jewels such as Cape Dutch homesteads, Victorian mansions, the museum, grand halls and colleges.

The history of Wellington shows that the French Huguenots were first to settle here in the 17th century. In its early years the town was first known as Limiet Valley and later as Val Du Charron or Wagenmakers-vallei (Valley of the Wagonmaker).

After the eventual establishment of the town in 1840, the name was changed to Wellington in honour of the Duke of Wel-lington, renowned soldier and conqueror of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo.

Wellington is home to many vineyards and fine wines as well as beautiful Cape Dutch homesteads. A large portion of the Cape’s vine cuttings are produced here at various vine nurseries. So most vines has some Wellington DNA in their make-up.

The Wellington Wine Route and Wellington Brandy Route are both top attractions in the region and its members offer good quality at exceptional value. All members on the route is within easy driving distance from each other and all-in-all the region is a paradise for the winelover.

You’ll also find two leather tanneries producing quality leather products such

as shoes, handbags, book covers and other smaller articles. Major events on the Wellington calendar includes the Draken-stein Coon Festival (January), Wilde Berg River Cycle Ride (March), Passover Festival (April), Safari Half Marathon (May), Stok-kiesdraai Festival (October), Festival of lights (November).

Follow the N1 through the Hugenote tunnel (one of the latest and longest in Africa) on a satisfying and “wide-open” drive to Worcester, the gateway of the Breede River region. This beautiful town lies between the Breede and Hex rivers and is surrounded by the Brandwacht, Over-hex and Langeberg Mountains. Worcester is the largest town in the Breede River region and also the last big town as you approach the Karoo on your way north.

Getting around in spacious Worcester is a true pleasure. The wide streets, easy layout, influences of neo-classical architecture, well maintained gardens, ample parking and friendly locals, will really make you feel welcome. With the recent addition of the large Mountain Mill Mall, Worcester is now a central hub for industry, training, shopping and tourism. Worcester is ideally situated to explore the surrounding towns, vines and valleys of Rawsonville, Botha, De Doorns, Ceres and Robertson.

Worcester is the “capital” of the largest wine producing area of the country. The region boasts a flourishing wine indus-try which dates back 250+ years. From here many award winning wines find their origin before they are shipped to grace dinner tables throughout the world. The region is home to some of the country’s largest wine exporters. Tasting and buy-ing wine is a big activity and past-time for tourists to the region and both Olof Bergh Solera Brandy Cellar and the KWV Brandy Cellar offer tastings at their cellar door.

Major events include: Autumn Splendour Festival in De Doorns (May), Soetes & Soup in Breedekloof valley (July), Bree-dekloof Outdoor & Wine Festival (Octo-ber).
