Message from the Governor

Happy New Year! I’m Mikail Clark, and I have the pleasure and honor of serving as your District Governor this

year! Currently, I am a graduating senior double majoring in international business and business marketing at

Liberty University; starting this fall, I will be pursuing an MBA in International Business, Commerce, and

Marketing. Besides my involvement in CKI, I am also involved with Liberty University Student Government

Association, Liberty International Business Association, and Alpha Nu Psi. In my spare time, I enjoy reading,

writing, and hanging out with friends.

Welcome to the first edition of the new and improved Capital Courier! As you will able to tell by reading this

publication, this is a new year, and our district board is here to serve you with excellence: we are dedicated

to doing whatever we can to help you succeed this year. I believe the best way we can go about doing this is

by encouraging each other to take the tenets of our organization—leadership, fellowship, and service—to

heart, not merely in our involvement in CKI, but in our lives. In everything we do, we should ask ourselves:

“Am I displaying the traits of a leader: openness, compassion, discipline, diligence, charisma, and humility?”

In fellowship, we should ask ourselves if we are reaching out to as many individuals as possible, both member

and non-member alike. Most importantly, when we serve, are we serving for ourselves, or are we serving to

impact the lives of others? One of the beautiful things about CKI is that simply by being a member of this

organization, each of us is already a leader, a friend, and a servant.

The creation and fulfillment of goals is a great way to tangibly implement the tenets of leadership, fellowship,

and service in our organization. As you have learned at SOTC, S.M.A.R.T. (Strategic, Measurable, Attainable,

Relevant, and Time-Oriented) provides an excellent framework for creating goals. Over the course of the

year, your club will use the S.M.A.R.T. goals it made to accomplish its objectives in the areas of service,

membership, fundraising, Kiwanis family relations, interclubs, and more. Similarly, later this month, the

district board will create its annual goals that will be largely influenced by the goals your club has made. In

this way, we can work together to accomplish great feats for our district and our organization as a whole.

In this new version of the Capital Courier, please be sure to take time to read through it thoroughly, as we

have several new sections and featured articles. One of those featured sections is A Message from the

Governor, in which I briefly address the district with updates on recent activities throughout the district and

beyond. Another section you will find will chronicle my travels around the district. You will also find messages

from other district leaders, your lieutenant governors, international leaders, and various members of the

Kiwanis family. As the year progresses, please take the time to soak in the wealth of information you will gain

from each of these sources.

I am very excited for this year and the possibilities it brings! If you ever have any questions, comments, or concerns about anything, please know that your district board is here to assist you to the best of its ability. Thank you for being a member of the Capital District of Circle K International, and happy reading!!! In Leadership, Fellowship, and Service,

Mikail Clark

Capital District CKI Governor

Meet your 2012-2013 District Board!!

Governor Mikail Clark

Currently, I am a graduating senior double majoring in international

business and business marketing at Liberty University; starting this

fall, I will be pursuing an MBA in International Business, Commerce,

and Marketing. Besides my involvement in CKI, I am also involved

with Liberty University Student Government Association, Liberty

International Business Association, and Alpha Nu Psi. In my spare

time, I enjoy reading, writing, and hanging out with friends.

Secretary-Treasurer Ben Durham

Hi my name is Ben Durham and I'm this year's Capital District CKI

District Secretary-Treasurer! I am a sophomore at Hampden-Sydney

College double majoring in English and Philosophy, with minors in

Public Service, Rhetoric, and History. Originally I'm from Charlotte,

NC, so forgive me for being extremely geographically challenged

when it comes to locations in Virginia and Delaware.

Editor Catie Dugan I am a 1st year graduate student at George Mason University and studying International Commerce and Policy. I am originally from Suffolk VA and have been in the Kiwanis Family for 9 years. My favorite service project is a park clean-up with my Kiwanis Club at Clemyjontri Park. I enjoy cooking, reading and travelling in my spare time! My favorite book is the Harry Potter series! I am so excited to see all the great thing the District Board accomplished this year!

Page 5: Capital Courier

Foothills Lt. Governor Chelsea Stallworth

I am a little southern belle who has grown up in Georgia, North Carolina

and Virginia. I have a crazy dysfunctional family that spreads from Virginia

to Texas, and I love them all so much. Being a Hokie is what it is all about

for me. Virginia Tech was the only college I applied to, and I am pursuing

a degree in Biology with a minor in Spanish while working towards

applying to nursing school in the near future. I hope to one day become a

NICU nurse to save babies’ lives. All of y’all will figure out that helping

people is what I love to do. This is going to be such a fantastic new CKI

year, and I can’t wait to work with everyone in this wonderful Capital

District!

Metro-Richmond Lt. Governor Heidi Imperio

Hola Capital Crabs! My name is Heidi Imperio and I am the

Lieutenant Governor for the Metro-Richmond Division! I look forward

to meeting and getting to know everyone I can in the district. Just a

little about myself, I am from Alexandria, Virginia (a.k.a. “NoVA”). I

am a junior at VCU studying Psychology with Biology minor (Pre-

Medicine) in hopes of becoming a child psychiatrist. I love running

around beautiful Richmond, drawing/art, wanting to cook everything I

see on the Food Network, and making people laugh!

Battlefield Lt. Governor Stephanie Areizaga

I'm a junior (soon to be senior!) at Towson University majoring in

sociology-anthropology major with a concentration in criminal justice,

and minoring in creative writing and English. In my free time, I write

for the Towson University branch of a women's online magazine

called Her Campus. My go-to random class to take for electives is

anything dance-related. I love superheroes, volunteering, and the

heavenly combination of chocolate & peanut butter.

NOVA Lt. Governor Amsley Pietranton

I am a DC native and I go to NVCC-Alexandria. I come from a large

Italian-Lebanese family on my dad’s side and a boisterous Irish-

American family on my mom’s side, making family gatherings very

interesting. Some of my favorite things to do are traveling to different

countries and spending time at the beach with family. One of my

personal goals in life is to travel to all 7 continents! My favorite sports are

swimming, soccer, and skiing. I swam and played soccer competitively

for 14 years and I have been skiing since I was two and half.

Potomac Lt. Governor Janelle Hope

At Howard, I was first introduced to Circle K by seeing a random

flyer in my dorm for their upcoming general body meeting. I wasn’t

exactly sure what Circle K was, but the words “Community

Service” jumped out and I knew I wanted to get involved. I LOVE

anything on Bravo! TV Channel, especially Real Housewives of

every city. I have a beautiful hermit crab named Alena, but I love

puppies! My favorite colors are black and purple and I love

traveling and road trips. I enjoy spending time with my family by

talking and watching movies, relaxing through retail therapy, and

hanging out with my friends. I am excited that you all put your faith

in me and I will strive to be the best I can be!

Presidential Lt. Governor Tameka Glover

I attend UVA and I am a rising senior. I am studying Psychology. My

middle name is Monae and I was birthday is April 2nd. My favorite

service project is Camp Holiday Trails Service Retreat where we

clean and help the camp prepare for its summer residents. My

favorite book is the Unexpected Guest by Agatha Christie. I am

greatly looking forward to the upcoming year and all the amazing

thing the Presidential Division is going to accomplish together!

Tidewater Lt. Governor Kim Bond

District Administrator Jennifer Wolff

Hi Capital! I’m Jen Wolff, your District Administrator, and my job is to be

your link to Kiwanis and the Circle K International office! I first began my

journey with the Kiwanis Family in CKI at Towson University (GO

TIGERS!). I graduated from Towson with a degree in Communications

with a specialization in Graphic Design. After college I relocated to

Northern Virginia, where I live with my husband Jeff and our daughter

Charlotte. We are expecting a new k-baby in July. Jeff and I are both

members of the Kiwanis Club of Tysons Corner/McLean, VA. I look

forward to working with all you this year! If you have any questions or

need any help, please contact me at [email protected]!

Assistant District Administrator Derek Dupuis

CKI made a major impact in my life during my time at Virginia Tech and so

I am grateful for the opportunity to give back to the organization by serving

as your Assistant District Administrator and Metro-Richmond Zone

Administrator. I am a proud member of the Kiwanis Club of Ashland

Virginia where I serve as the Kiwanis Advisor to the in-formation CKI Club

of Randolph-Macon College. I'm looking forward to another great year of

Service, Leadership, and Fellowship.

My name is Kimberly Bond and I am the Tidewater lieutenant

governor this year. I am currently a Biology major and Art minor. In

my free time, I love to wobble (for those of you who know the dance,

you understand!) and take long walks outside on beautiful sunny

days. I am excited to work with everyone this year and plan to serve

the board to the best of my ability!"

Page 8: Capital Courier

Greetings Capital CKI Members! Congratulations to all 2011 - 2012 Club Officers and all new officers on your recent elections. As your service year begins, I wanted to share a list of the many resources that CKI has to offer all members through the year. I am here to support you through whatever you need at anytime. Please do not hesitate to contact me whenever you may have a question about Circle K International. Thank you for all you do! CKI offers an assortment of experiences to help members realize their leadership potential and the impact that one small act of kindness can have on the world. In addition to our commitment to the advancement of our tenets of Service, Leadership, and Fellowship, CKI offers its members a plethora of resources and benefits to take advantage of. Check out a summary of different areas where CKI members can benefit and keep them in mind the next time you are marketing and promoting your club to your campus. Campus and Community Service: Because of CKI's reputation of being the leading collegiate service organization, members of CKI clubs share in the practice of serving their campuses and communities. CKI members, by planning and participating in projects and fundraisers, volunteer their time, talents, ideas and skills for the purpose of making a serious impact on the world and those in need. Leadership Development: Through the CKI structure, every member has the opportunity to apply their skills and talents as an officer, committee chair, or committee member. Whether it’s serving on a club’s installation banquet committee, being a district officer, or running for international president, each member has the opportunity to reach their maximum leadership potential and grow in the area of leadership with CKI. Fellowship: Because CKI is organized on more than 500 college and university campuses in nine countries, members have the unique opportunity to become friends with fellow collegians throughout North America and around the world. Attendance at club, division, district, and international projects, programs, conventions and conferences offer an outlet for CKI members to share in their diversity, similarities, and develop friendship with fellow servant leaders around the world. Scholarship & Recognition Programs: Through the generous efforts of the Kiwanis International Foundation and Kiwanians in the thirty districts of CKI, up to thirty $1,000 scholarships are made available to CKI members. In addition, the CKI Recognition and Awards Program offers clubs and members the opportunity to be recognized for their tremendous contributions to CKI. Member Handbook & New Member Orientation Program: Each new CKI member receives a handbook which outlines the purpose, history and structure of the organization and access to the online New Member Orientation Program. Circle K Magazine: Each member receives the Circle K magazine which features articles and information pertaining to service projects, college help topics, organizational updates, opportunities to serve, and more. In-Print Resources: Every member club receives well researched publications and materials developed by the International Office. These materials are designed to assist in club administration, growth and development. Upon publication, these resources will be forwarded to clubs. You can request in-print resources by calling 1-800-KIWANIS ext 411.

Strike Out ALS at William and Mary!!

Submitted by: Daniel Kinney

Nothing is better than baseball on a nice day unless

it is the annual Strike Out ALS game. A CKI and

William & Mary favorite, SOALS, as we call it,

brought 800 students and Williamsburg community

members to Plumeri Park on March 31st for a Tribe

baseball game against the Towson Tigers. For every

student who entered and signed a banner, $10 was

donated for the ALS Foundation by our various

sponsors; all ticket sales to the Williamsburg

community also raised money for ALS. Raffle tickets

were sold for various prizes donated by a range of

sponsors to raise even more money for the ALS

Foundation. A total of $1300 was raised for the

foundation, and as usual for SOALS, the Tribe came

out swinging and won the game 19-2, so it was

definitely a grand slam for the Tribe baseball team

and CKI. One, two, three strikes you are out ALS!

Spotlight on ELIMINATE

With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis

International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate

maternal and neonatal tetanus. Neonatal tetanus kills one

baby every nine minutes—nearly 60,000 newborn children

every year. A significant number of women also die due to

maternal tetanus. The effects of the disease are

excruciating—tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful

convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.

To eliminate MNT from the Earth, 129 million mothers and their

future babies must be immunized. This requires vaccines,

syringes, safe storage, transportation, thousands of skilled staff

and more. It will take $110 million—and the dedicated work

of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family.

Kiwanis and UNICEF joined forces to tackle iodine deficiency

disorders, achieving one of the most significant public health

successes of the 20th century. Now, together, they are

eliminating MNT from the face of the Earth. In doing so, the

project will reach the poorest, most neglected mothers and

babies with additional lifesaving health care. The end of this

one disease means the beginning of better health for so

many families.

District Goal: For the Capital

District of CKI to raise $12,600 for

the Kiwanis ELIMINATE Project,

saving the lives of 7,000 mothers

as well as their future babies,

through district events and club

donations by March 31, 2013.

VCU Culture Show

Submitted by: Daman Gill

Our first annual Eliminate Project Culture show was held on March 8th, 2012 at

the University Commons Ballroom from 7-9 pm. The event turned out to be a

bigger success than we were expecting. All of our tickets were sold out! From

the tickets sales alone we were able to raise more than $600, and from the

Silent Auction more than $50! In total, we raised more than $700 for the

Eliminate Project.

Circle K International teamed up with UNICEF at VCU to support the Eliminate

Project. The theme for the show was “Around the World” in which MNT existed.

For those who are unaware of MNT, it is maternal neonatal tetanus that affects

infants. MNT exists in 35 countries including Africa, Asia, Europe, and North

America. About nine infants die every minute due to MNT because they’re

sensitive to light and touch. Soraiya Thura, the UNICEF at VCU President was an

awesome part of the show.

The crowd was very diverse from different ethical backgrounds. The cultural

booths displayed different ethnic food for people to taste. The night started off

with Avanti Kollaram, the Eliminate Project Ambassador, educating the

audience about the Eliminate Project and how it has impacted the world.

Then, the performances began from the different organizations. The highlight

performances for the night included VCU Poppers, Jhoom, and Muevelo. VCU

Poppers spread the art of popping and other hip-hop styles. Jhoom is a new

fusion dance team that portrayed music from Bollywood to classical and

bhangra. Last but not the least Muevelo took away the show with their

amazing Salsa, Meringue, Bachata, and Hip Hop.

Thanks for the love and support from the Service Committee, UNICEF, and

Circle K International Members, VCU student organizations, dance teams, and

Dr. Rodriquez for making an appearance to the show! We will come with an

even bigger bang next year!!!!

JMU Benefit Concert

Submitted by: Emily Benusa

To accomplish the goal of eliminated maternal neonatal tetanus

by 2015, JMU CKI knew we needed to find a way to go large

scale and raise as much as we could for this amazing cause.

This was the motive for having our very own benefit concert.

With JMU’s theater on campus, and so many A Cappella

groups on campus, the goal seemed attainable. We were able

to secure nine performances and seven raffles for the nights

events. The Acapella groups and dances groups did a

phenomenal job performing and entertaining our guests. Our

club members contributed to the night’s events with either a

raffle item, bake sale items, or volunteering to set up for the

festivities. After collecting all the money from our concert, baked

goods, raffle, online donations, and happy change, we were

very pleasantly surprised to find out that we raised $850. That is

472 mothers; not to mention all of their future children. As a

club, we were so pleased that we were able to make this kind of

a contribution to this cause and help change the course of

history.

NOVA Alexandria Culture Show

Submitted by: Sancho Jacinto

The NVCC-Alexandria CKI Club organized a culture show that occurred on March 30, 2012 at the Bailey’s Community Center in Falls Church, Virginia as a fundraising event for the ELIMINATE Project. The show was a huge success and the audience thoroughly enjoyed it. We raised several hundred dollars for the ELIMINATE Project through donations from sponsors and attendees of the show. There were 12 performers, including multiple dance groups, an acoustic band, and four singers, representing various countries and cultures. Additionally, we also sold raffle tickets for amazing prizes from some of our sponsors, such as McDonalds, Olive Garden, Sport &Health Club, the NVCC-Alexandria Provost Office, and the NVCC-Alexandria Bookstore. Baja Fresh was also a sponsor and food from there was available for purchase by the attendees.

We had a number of club members who performed at the event,

including our Vice President of Service, Fatma Rekik, performing a

Tunisian song, Event Chair, Jennifer Ortiz dancing with her

Bolivian dance group, and myself performing a Beatles song from

my childhood. Additionally, some of my non-CKI friends attended

and performed. It was nice to have my CKI friends meet my non-

CKI friends.

Overall, the event was a huge success. Around a hundred people attended the event. Participants were also generous in their donations as we raised hundreds of dollars for the ELIMINATE Project. The club and it members put a lot of time and effort into organizing and coordinating this event. This has been the most successful project our CKI Club has carried out and it would not have been possible without a collective effort from our members. Photos of the event can be found on our Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/pages/NVCC-Alexandria-Circle-K-International/196413804955, as well as links to videos of some of the performances.

Kiwanis International Foundation Scholarship Winners! The Kiwanis International Foundation Matching Scholarship is a special program using the combined efforts of the Kiwanis International Foundation and the Capital District Kiwanis Foundation. Funds are allocated by the Kiwanis International Foundation and matched by the Kiwanis District Foundation to provide for 5 matching scholarships of up to $1,000 for deserving CKI members. This unique program is designed to provide recognition and financial assistance to individual CKI members who have achieved academic excellence, demonstrated leadership abilities, and provided service to others. The 2011-2012 scholarships were judged by a group of Kiwanis volunteers at this past District Convention. Previous winners of the scholarship, as well as CKI International Reps and Governors from the 2011-2012 year were not eligible for this particular scholarship. We were proud to award Kelly O’Toole (The College of William & Mary), Sonia Iqbal (The George Washington University), Valerie Drogo (University of Mary Washington), and Avanti Kollaram (Virginia Commonwealth University) for the 2011-2012 year. Congratulations to the winners! The 2012-2013 Matching Scholarship will be awarded again at the 2013 CDCKI District Convention. Applications will become available in November and all members in good standing that have not previously won the scholarship are encouraged to apply!

Greetings CKI Members, While your clubs just transitioned to new leadership on April 1st, Kiwanis clubs are holding their annual meetings and electing their new club officers who will take over October 1st of this year as we run on a different calendar than CKI. This is important to understand as you work with your sponsoring Kiwanis clubs on projects but even more so when talking to them about funding for your club. Most Kiwanis clubs plan their budgets for the new year over the summer so that in the fall when their leadership changes they are ready to go. Therefore, if you want your CKI club to be a part of the budgeting discussions, you should approach your Kiwanis advisor with ideas now. The Capital District of Kiwanis International is now well underway with our campaign for The Eliminate Project and we are proud to already have raised close to $300,000 with a large percentage coming from our Service Leadership Programs (SLP) like CKI and Key Club. We are gearing up for our International Convention this June in New Orleans that will be held in conjunction with your CKI Convention. Many Kiwanis clubs and divisions are planning larger hands-on service projects this year as we "Increase Hands for Service." Hopefully, your CKI club is planning on participating with your sponsoring Kiwanis club on Kiwanis One Day, happening April 21st. One Day is our annual day of service where all Kiwanis clubs are asked to plan a service project in conjunction with the SLP clubs they sponsor. We are particularly excited that Kiwanis International President Alan Penn and First Lady Jeri Penn will be visiting the Capital District from May 4-8, 2012. You can come out and serve alongside President Alan on Saturday, May 5th at 9am at Seaton Elementary School in Washington, DC as we host a large scale service project to renovate the school. Please contact your Lt. Governor if you are interested in attending. As always, if there is anything Kiwanis or I can do for you, please let me know. My email address is [email protected] and I am always interested in hearing from CKI members! In Kiwanis service, Jeffrey Wolff, Governor Capital District Kiwanis

together and to strengthen our K Family relations. This is one of my goals for this

year. Thus to accomplish this feat, I am targeting it through my project called Super

K. I have asked everyone in my district to reach out to all branches of K Family and

do something spectacular for the year. Whether this is building K-Kids clubs,

attending a Kiwanis Club meeting, or just doing a joint service project with Circle K,

I plan to unite the K’s! I look forward to working with all of you this year in service

and family.

In spring of 1977, Circle K International was chartered at the

University of Mary Washington. In the 35 years that has passed

since that chartering, UMW CKI has served our school,

community, and world through innumerable service hours,

educational events, charity fundraisers, and much more. We have

fostered leadership skills, friendship, and a passion for community

service among our student body. We would like to thank the

Kiwanis Club of Fredericksburg for their support and

encouragement, our local Key Clubs for their enthusiasm at our K-

Family events, and the Ridgeline Division and Capital District for

helping us thrive as a club. Thank you to all our members and

officers, past and present – we would be nothing without you!

Here’s to another 35 years of living to serve and loving to serve at

the University of Mary Washington!
