Please welcome CTR’s newest member:

From the President By Roger Morrison

My CTR perspective is somewhat colored from being Mem-bership Chair for several years. I offer you these two thoughts for your consideration:

As has been stated many times, TRs may be the focus of

CTR, but we come for the comradeship and social activities. Members are our lifeblood, and we need to continue to enroll new members. I have many CTR brochures on the club in-cluding membership application forms for the taking. Let me know if you want to have some handy for when you run across an unfamiliar looking car or know of a repair shop that doesn’t have any.

We also need to encourage our members to continue their association with the club by providing diverse events cover-ing the spectrum of members interests – in 2019 CTR had 33 events covering social events, tech sessions, breakfasts, and of course BOG – all of which will be continued, but we still need to pursue new ideas and venues. We have event coordi-nators for both Maryland and Virginia (see The Standard for contact information) and please contact them if you have an idea for a new event

CTR has already had a busy start to 2020 with January start-

ing the season with some of our traditional events – CTR Drives the Capital, the Awards Brunch, the Washington DC car show, CTR Breakfast, and the Simeone Museum. The Standard has all the details.

We started February with our BOG Planning Meeting, then

comes Drive Your Triumph Day, a tech session at British Stand-ard Motors, and finally the Winter Luncheon. In March, we have scheduled a Tech Session at London Auto and a CTR Breakfast. Watch for an Evite for these events.

I look forward to meeting and talking with you at these

events. We are off to a great start for the 2020 BOG and started fi-

nalizing the details at the February meeting. We’ve locked in Gunston Hall for the last Sunday in April, Lionel Mitchel has organized the special display cars for the “Great Cars of Great Britain – Classic and Modern.” The Eventbrite registration sys-tem has gone live and is now available to register your car(s) – see www.capitaltriumphregister/bog.

As always, the success of BOG depends you acting as staff

for the event. Peter Farrell, CTR Vice President, is our Volunteer Coordinator, and he would love to hear from you if can volunteer for a few hours at BOG.

From the Editor’s Cluttered Desk Art Fournier

The winter issues if The Standard are usually on the thin side; however, CTR has been busy with several well-attended activities and members have been generous with article submis-sions. Consequently, this February edition is jam packed. Thank you for your contributions and, please, keep it up!

Last month I mentioned participating in the 2019 Moss Mo-

toring Challenge. More recently, I was pleasantly surprised to discover I will be the recipient of a $50 Moss gift certificate as a runner up. Mind you, I was really far down the list of runners up, but still very pleased with Moss’ generosity for rewarding me for having fun. Hmm, now what does my Triumph need.

If you’re looking for an excuse to drive your LBC (or Miata)

and haven’t signed up for their 2020 Motoring Challenge, please do yourself a favor and look into it. However, 2020 may be the final year for this event. Participation has declined to the point where the Moss organizers are going to take a break after the 2020 challenge runs its course. If the challenge was only open to LBCs, I’d understand the decline. After all, most of us are on the, shall we say, mature side with cars of uncertain reliability. But the event is open to Miata/MX-5 owners as well. Those reli-able cars are out there in quantity and owned by vigorous young people who love to drive, aren’t they? What’s the world coming to?

The Executive Steering Board, universally known as ESB, meets every other month in the odd months. If you have com-plaint, suggestion, or compliment that needs to be addressed by the ESB, please drop me a line at [email protected].

My hope is that you always understand the stains from your

Triumph on your garage floor. Take care.

Winter and Spring Events

International Drive Your Triumph Day is Monday, February 10th. Our annual Winter Luncheon is planned for the 23rd in the Crystal City section of Arlington, Virginia. An additional event has recently been added to the February schedule. British Stand Motors will host a carburetor tech session on the 29th, the perfect way to use 2020’s extra Leap Year day. Information on our February events is in this issue of the newsletter.

One of our most popular annual events is the tech session at

London Auto in Falls Church, Virginia. It is planned for March 21st. If you haven’t attended a London Auto session previously, you won’t want to miss it. It is always informative and entertain-ing. Our March breakfast is planned for the 22nd.

April is always a busy month for CTR. We will begin the

month with our annual George Washington Parkway Run on the 5th. This year we will look at a different rest stop to avoid the congestion that’s always present leaving Columbia Island as tourists head into the District for Cherry Blossom Festival activi-ties. The Williamsburg British and European car show will be on the 18th. Britain on the Green will be held on April 26th at Gunston Hall with the Stuffing Party on the 22nd and Set Up on the 25th. As always, we’ll need your support to ensure BOG’s success.

Looking way ahead to May, we are planning our now annual

Brunch by the Bay on the 17th. We’ll again plan on Pirate’s Cove in Galesville, Maryland. British Car Week kicks off on the 23rd and runs through the 31st. If you haven’t driven your Tri-umph in 2020 prior to that, plan on getting it on the road by then.

It’s wishful thinking to be planning for June; however, sev-

eral shows and related events are already on the calendar. Cars and Motorcycles of England hosted by Delaware Valley Tri-umphs in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, is on the 6th. On the 7th there is the Original British Car Day at Serra Valley Farms in Mt. Airy, Maryland, and the Old Town Festival of Speed, a more spectator-oriented event in Alexandria, Virginia. Britfest, a cele-bration of all things British, will be held in Timonium, Maryland, on the 20th. Father’s Day is the 21st and the date for the Sully Antique Car Show in Chantilly, Virginia. Finally, Triumphs Around the Chesapeake will host their annual Brits by the Bay show at the Harford Winery in Forest Hill, Maryland, on the 28th.

Look for more on these and other events in upcoming issues

of the newsletter. If you have a suggestion for an event, share it with one of the board members. If an idea appeals to you, the odds are good that others would enjoy it as well.

2020 National Meets

Details on three 2020 national Triumph meets have been

announced. The Triumph Register of America (TRA), the club

CTR Happenings

The Capital Triumph Register is a chapter of

The Vintage Triumph Register and 6-Pack

for four-cylinder TR2s through TR4As, will hold its TRA2020 meet June 15th through 19th in Lexington, Kentucky. The Vintage Triumph Register, the club for all Triumph enthusiasts will hold its annual National Convention in Galena, Illinois, August 31st through September 4th. 6-Pack, the club for six-cylinder TR250s, TR5s, and TR6s will hold its annual 6-Pack Trials in nearby Richmond, Virginia, October 1st through 3rd. Look for more on these events as we get closer, but begin making plans now.

Evite Etiquette

CTR has made good use of the evite app to schedule and announce changes to events. We often depend on evite to give us a head count for events that require reservations, such as our so-cial events at restaurants. All of us have had plans change due to unforeseen circumstances; however, when your plans do change and you’re unable to follow through with a commitment, please update your evite response. Or for last minute changes, send an email to the event host so that the club can update reservations. This is also important for driving events. If we know you’re not coming, we won’t delay our start waiting for you (and worrying that your trusty Triumph has left you stranded).

CTR YouTube Channel

CTR has its own YouTube channel where you may view

BOG and CTR event videos. Here’s the link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEBXsxSCRFXkbEuK5z1tE5A/playlists Post videos on YouTube, then send the link to Christo-pher Yurasko ([email protected]) to be included.

BOG 2020 Planning Meeting Update John Buescher

The Standard Page 4 February 2020

The kickoff planning meeting for BOG 2020 was held on Saturday, February 2, at Gunston Hall. It was well attended by 16 hardy CTR members, and we had a rousing discussion with valuable inputs from all who attended. I was excited to announce several new subcommittee chairpersons: Alan Stiley as the awards coordinator; Jim Moscardini for balloting, Stephen Oertwig as the sponsor coordinator, and Bob Fox as the 2020 field marshal. Welcome to the team guys!

Gunston Hall staff provided an update of ongoing renovation

activities, and there are many. First, the Visitor Center building’s renovations are complete to include new roof, windows, and car-peting plus new interactive displays and many other upgrades. Other upgrades that are under construction and should be com-pleted prior to BOG include the upgrade of the mansion’s fire suppression system and installation of period correct gardens in the rear of the mansion which will closely depict the gardens which stood during George Mason’s time. During the installation of the new fire suppression system, the mansion is closed.

Similar to the special display that we had at last year’s BOG,

Lionel Mitchell has proposed the “Great Cars of Great Britain.” The display will include pairs of cars: Jaguar E and F types, Lo-tus Elan and Elise, and classic and modern Mini Coopers, Mor-gans, and Land Rovers.

While early registration went well in 2019, the team wants

the process to be even more efficient. Issues that affected regis-tration included windshield placards which were out of order and delayed giving out participant’s packets. We’ll ensure the wind-shield plaque are in alphabetical order. Some participants arrived with a different car from what was registered online. We will add additional volunteers and dedicated people to ensure cars are properly registered in the proper car class and assigned a valid car number. We expect these changes will make registration smooth-er and more efficient.

Last year we used Eventbrite as our online registration appli-

cation. We will again use Eventbrite for this year’s show. By the time of publication of this newsletter, Eventbrite will be open for registration! So go online at www.capitaltriumphregister/bog and register. Remember, we use online registration to identify the car classes for BOG 2020.

We will continue the Hagerty Youth Judging Award Pro-

gram which will be coordinated by Sandy Thomson and sons. This event is another way that the club is attempting to encourage our youth to become more interested in British car and carry on our love for these automobiles. Additionally, BOG is continuing the Kid’s Entertainment Tent, which proved to be a well-received event, and will again be coordinated by Sharon Edelstein. This

event sets BOG off from other car shows and makes our show a more family-oriented event!

The club has contracted several food vendors which we used

at last year’s show: Thistleberry Farm Bakery (breakfast items), Pork N’ BBQ Fusion (BBQ), and the Mason Neck Lion’s Club (hamburgers and hot dogs) . We continue to search for one other food truck and an ice cream truck. If you have any recommenda-tions, please email your ideas to John Buescher at [email protected].

As a side note, with all the wet weather we experienced, the

Club has planned a backup location at Gunston Hall as BOG is a rain or shine event. If the show field becomes waterlogged and unusable, we have determined that the parking lot behind and to the left side of the Gunston Hall Visitor’s Center is capable of parking approximately 140 cars and several food trucks. We envision that the show will be moved there. Patrick Carter, our field layout coordinator, has developed a contingency layout plan to have “in our hip pocket,” just in case of rain.

Again, if you have an idea(s) to make BOG 2020 even bet-

ter, please email your ideas to John Buescher at [email protected]. All ideas are encouraged and welcomed!

CTR and Gunston Hall staff members met on February 1st to discuss plans for Britain on the Green 2020 to be held April 26th

The CTR Points System (or how do I earn one of those

neat certificates)

Longtime members are familiar with CTR’s point system, but it might be something of a mystery to our newer members who are confronted with sign-in sheets at the club’s events. The point system was initiated several years ago as a means of en-couraging and rewarding participation in club events and activi-ties. At the end of the year, each member’s points are tallied and those with the most points recognized at the annual awards event in January, such as this year’s Awards Brunch on January 12th. Recognition may be in the form of a certificate or something more substantial such as a prize.

Points are earned by attending a CTR-sponsored event (20

points), driving a Triumph (automobile, not motorcycle) to the event (15 points), or wearing an item with a club logo (either CTR or BOG) (10 points). Points are also awarded for organiz-ing or staging a CTR event (70 points shared among the organiz-ers) or acting as the CTR point of contact for an event held by a third party (25 points). Writing an article for the club’s newslet-ter, The Standard, earns 25 points. And recruiting a new mem-ber for CTR will earn 45 points.

But wait, there’s more! Britain on the Green, our annual

British car and motorcycle show, requires a huge investment of time and effort on the part of many CTR members to ensure its success. As such, significant points are awarded to BOG chairs (or co-chairs, as the case may be) (100 points), subcommittee chairs (50 points), and committee members (25 points). Addi-tionally, 15 points are awarded to BOG volunteers in addition to the normal points they would earn by attending BOG as a CTR-sponsored event. Helping at the BOG “Stuffing Party” or with set up activities the day before BOG earns points as well (10 points).

The Capital Triumph Register’s goal is to enjoy our cars in

the company of like-minded people. The points system is a method of encouraging participation in our events by offering the added incentives of recognition and reward for doing so.

BOG Sign Contest John Buescher

Last year we put up signs along Gunston Road which leads from Route 1 to Gunston Hall and BOG to both advertise and direct people to BOG. We mimicked the advertising jingle sign-age for Burma Shave shaving cream. If you do not remember these signs along the many highways, well, you are much young-er than me. Last year’s five signs read:

George Mason’s Green – Sign 1 Is not too far – Sign 2

Just three more miles – Sign 3 To the British cars – Sign 4

BOG logo - Sign 5

The 2020 Britain on the Green commemorative poster was unveiled at the CTR Awards Brunch on January 12th. The poster by noted artist Joseph Craig English features the 2019 Best of Show (Gunston Bowl) winner, the 1955 MG TF 1500 owned by Bill Laux.

The posters will be available at no charge to those who pre-

register for BOG 2020 by April 15th. Early registration is open on our website, www.capitaltriumphregister/bog

We received many compliments from spectators and partici-pants alike on the signs, so we will again be putting up the “Burma Shave” signs along Gunston Road for BOG 2020. How-ever, we don’t want to use the last year’s signs and want a fresh jingle. Here’s where you your literary talents come in.

We are holding a contest to develop the 2020 “Burma

Shave” jingle and need your entries. You have until March 30 to submit your entries. The prize will be one of the items our spon-sors typically provide, newsletter recognition of your entry, and the enduring adulation of your peers.

Please provide your entry to John Buescher at email

[email protected] by March 30 so we can select the winning entry and make the signs.

CTR Winter Luncheon February 23rd

Stephen Oertwig

There’s no snow to be seen and Punxsutawney Phil has predicted an early spring. It’s a perfect time to join Capital Triumph Register mem-bers February 23 for the annual Win-ter Luncheon and kiss the cold weather goodbye.

We had such a great time in 2019 at the Crystal City Sports

Pub that we couldn’t see any reason to change the venue. The Crystal City Sports Pub is located at 529 23rd Street South in the Crystal City section of Arlington, Virginia. This is conveniently located a stone’s throw from I-395 and not far from the Penta-gon. There is free parking in a lot across the street as well as a pay parking lot on 22nd Street South behind the pub.

Plan on meeting 11:00 a.m. with the seating chime ringing at

11:30 a.m. The Crystal City Sports Pub features an extensive $16.99 brunch buffet in addition to their regular menu. We will be seated in a separate dining room on the second floor. The menu link is https://www.ccsportspub.com/menu

It’s too early to look into the crystal ball to predict the

weather, but if Phil is correct, the weather will be grand. In the event of a sketchy weather forecast, be on the lookout for an evite update that will reschedule or cancel the event. Triumphs always are welcome as preferred transport, but if road conditions are not favorable, don't be afraid to drive your daily driver.

We hope to see you February 23 on warm, sunny Sunday. Or

otherwise. Please RSVP by February 20 so the restaurant has time to prepare for us.

British Standard Motors has graciously invited CTR mem-bers to a Tech Session at their shop at 2811-B Old Lee Highway in Fairfax, Virginia on Saturday February 29th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Mick Webb will lead a rousing discussion on Zenith-Stromberg carburetor tune up. He will be able to discuss other types of carburetors as needed. This session will build upon the club’s previous session on Stromberg carburetors. To allow a more hands-on event, Mick has agreed to conduct a simple car-buretor adjustment on a TR6.

There will be coffee and donuts provided by BSM starting at

9:30 a.m. The tech session will wrap-up with pizza and beverag-es supplied by the CTR. This event is a great opportunity to learn more about your car from the people who know British cars the best. Our thanks to Mick and the other technicians for their continuing hospitality and support.

Show your club pride with stun-ning door magnets proudly dis-playing the CTR logo. These magnets are approximately 8”x12” to fit even the smallest TR3 door!!! $20 per pair - con-tact Patrick Carter (202-285-7031 or [email protected]) to arrange delivery or pick them up at the next CTR event. These magnets are always a big hit at the parades in which CTR partici-pates.

London Auto Services Tech Session

March 21st London Auto Services Ltd., again has graciously invited

CTR members to a Tech Session at their shop at 7718 Lee High-way in Falls Church, VA on Saturday March 21st from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Nick Vadala and his technical service team will hoist a club member’s car to conduct an inspection of the car’s undercarriage and explain mechanical issues that may arise. Fol-lowing the car’s inspection, London Auto techs will lead an in-formative session that may include a discussion of the car’s sus-pension, carburation, or electrical issues.

There will be coffee and donuts served in the morning and the tech session will wrap-up with a delicious cookout with burg-ers, hot dogs, and beverages supplied by London Auto. This event is always one of our best attended tech sessions and a great opportunity to learn more about your car from the people who know British cars the best. Our thanks to Nick and his great team of technicians for their continuing hospitality and support.

Awards Brunch January 12th

More than 40 CTR members attended the annual Awards Brunch at Clyde’s at the Mark Center in Alexandria, Virginia, on January 12th. In addition to being an occasion to honor members for their contributions throughout the previous year, the awards brunch also serves as CTR’s annual business meeting. As has already been reported, Roger Morrison was elected to a two-year term as president while Pete Farrell was reelected vice president. All other members of the Executive Steering Board were reap-pointed to their positions and were joined by immediate past president Stephen Oertwig as a member-at-large.

Several special awards were presented. The most notable of

these was the Golden Piston Award presented to Stephen Oertwig for his six years of dedicated service as CTR president. Steve became only the seventh person to receive this award in the club’s 30-year history. Congratulations on well-deserved recog-nition for tireless devotion to the Capital Triumph Register!

Four annual awards were presented. Barry Stoll received the

Bill Goodwin Spirit of Driving Award for his outstanding level of participation in CTR events throughout 2019. The award was endowed by Carol Goodwin in memory of her late husband Bill who was well known for “driving on and driving often” here in the United States as well as the United Kingdom and continental Europe. Barry’s efforts exemplify the ideal of enthusiasm for LBCs in general and Triumphs in particular. The Triumph Over Adversity Award was presented to Dick Burk whose TR3A slowed him down on a few occasions, but never daunted his par-ticipation in club events throughout the year. Bruce Metcalf proved an operable Triumph isn’t needed to rack up participation points in CTR events. Consequently, Bruce was honored with the You Don’t Need a Triumph Award for 2019. Sherman Telis and his TR250 took part in many, if not most, CTR events in 2019 and was recognized for Best New Member Participation.

As has been done for many years, certificates of recognition

were presented to members whose participation in club events throughout the year was exemplary. Points are awarded for many club activities including hosting and taking part in events, recruit-ing new members, writing newsletter articles and, of course, sup-porting Britain on the Green. This year, certificates were award-ed to Art Fournier, Stephen and Ho Yong Oertwig, Lionel and Nancy Mitchell, Doug and Marie Dallhoff, Pete and Lenore Far-rell, Barry Stoll, Roger and Peggy Morrison, John and Sara Buescher, Paul and Sharon Edelstein, Dick and Carole Burk, Sherman and Karen Telis, Tom and Mary Burke, Bruce and Loretta Metcalf, Robert Fox, Walt Seedlock, Ben Cheshire, Alan Stiley and Linda Hollingsworth, Alex Attard, Rich and Lisa Smalling, Rich and Joanne Wilkins, Stuart Diekmeyer, Jim and Michelle Moscardini, Christopher Yurasko, Steve and Ana Harri-son, Sandy and JoAnne Thomson, Glenn Minucci, Richard and Janet Pace, Patrick Carter, Ben and Susan Pontano, Sam Earle, Stan Olownia, Diane Page, Jeneanne Hunter, Doug Walls, Stet-son Tinkham, Maureen and Jay Donn, Sherman Taffel and Ca-

mellia Blackwell, Bob and Maria Young, Steve Mumma, Carter and Emily Sensabaugh, Don and Melodee Sheehan, Al and Elea-nor Ames, Beverly and David Dougherty, Dan and Gina Dragoi, Lyle Farmer, Pete Philips, Jaime Steve, John Croft, Kevin Durkin, and Roger and Mary Haley. Congratulations to all! (Those who didn’t receive their certificates at the Awards Brunch may get them from Pete Farrell at upcoming CTR events.)

Stephen Oertwig presented awards from the 2019 Vintage

Triumph Register national convention to Christopher Yurasko for the CTR website and to Art Fournier for the CTR newsletter.

Throughout the Awards Brunch, door prizes were presented

to those attending. We would like to thank Alex Attard for donat-ing the custom-made, metal TR6 silhouette and Beverly Dougherty for donating two tool sets used as prizes. Several other prizes were donated by sponsors of Britain on the Green such as Moss Motors and British Parts Northwest. Thank you all for your support!

Finally, thanks go to Stephen Oertwig for making the arrange-ments for the Awards Brunch and to Umer Naim, Clyde’s general manager and one-time Morris Minor owner, for the outstanding food and service that has brought us back to Clyde’s year after year.

We have moved away from having to manage club regalia inventory. Having a supplier such as Fourth Gear allows us to have a source where members can order regalia on-demand.

When exploring the Fourth Gear web site,

you’ll also notice that they have other logo galler-ies for Triumph and other British cars as well as British marque logos. You could custom-design you own merchandise with more than one logo. Ralph at Fourth Gear is very amenable to custom orders both in terms of the logos as well as prod-ucts not show on the web site. So, feel free to call him if you want something completely different.

So, now there is no excuse for missing partici-

pation points at club events for not having club clothing.

New & TR250 and TR6 Bumble Bee

Hoses Doug Dallhoff

Much like the original Michelin Redline Tires that many of us had on our TR6 or TR250, bumble bee hoses that were origi-nal equipment on TR250s and early 1969 TR6s have long since been out of production; until now. Using the “Triumph Experi-ence” forum ( https://www.triumphexp.com/forum/tr5-and-tr250-forum.25/ ) to gauge interest, Gary Hickman of Edge Engineering Inc. in Santee, CA and the owner of no less than six TR250s, took on the initiative to duplicate not only the look of these hoses but also the material, texture, and manufacturing process of the original bumble bee hoses and make them available for purchase to other Triumph enthusiasts. Using several bumble bee hoses he collected over the last 30 odd years, he reversed engineered these hoses to determine how they were made. As expected, the manu-facturing methods used were very old school and no longer used by today’s rubber fabrication shops.

A little background on Gary. He worked for three different

British car dealerships in the late 70's and was a British car flip-per during the late ‘80s boom. He’s an engineer, owns a CNC machine shop in SoCal and is a part time race car driver. He’s done several very challenging projects for Cox & Buckles, Moss, and TRF. The most challenging of which was reproducing TR3 and TR4 steering wheels. He likes taking on challenges like this as he says it breaks up the monotony of everyday production work.

A key to getting this initiative off the ground was to get

enough people committed to purchasing approximately 25 bum-ble bee coolant hose sets at $400 per set. Having personally fol-lowed this forum thread, the commitment to purchasing these

hose sets was astonishing and the commitment numbers grew well beyond the 25 needed and kept on growing.

As a result, Gary advanced the project to the next phase.

Having done all the reverse engineering, he now had the material, texture, and manufacturing process worked out. They would be spiral wound using the correct reinforced rubber with a heavy texture to it. The tooling was worked out and the next step was to identify the pattern or texture in the embossing that’s done from rolling the rubber. As it turned out, there were two distinct pat-tern differences; one a “Burlap” texture and the other a “Diamond” texture. The diamond pattern he believed was nothing more than a wire braided sock that was put on the hose while it was being vulcanized. As the diamond pattern upped the level of complexity requiring even more tooling and development time, Gary chose to go with the burlap texture in an effort to keep the project somewhat on track.

All that was left to do now was to revise the tooling to install

the yellow bumble bee stripe. The initial production run hoses were then sent to an independent testing lab for burst testing as well as other needed testing, and all testing was passed for the new hoses.

All in all they went through somewhere around 50+ different iterations to get the yellow stripe as crisp and the cloth weave as close to original as possible. As Gary noted, if this were easy someone else would have done them a long time ago. Everything about these hoses was old school and therefore all their build techniques had to be old school. This was the biggest hurdle that took the longest to overcome.

Final production of the hoses started in Dec 2019 and Gary

started delivering the bumble bee coolant hose kits soon thereaf-ter. What’s next? Gary has already done the tooling and is in the process of making the following additional bumble bee hoses

First production run of new bumble bee hoses

available for purchase: Brake booster hose single yellow stripe, all three PCV hoses with single yellow stripe and 1/4" I.D. Fuel line hose with spiral yellow stripe.

I’ve received my set of the bumble bee coolant hoses and I

couldn’t be happier with both the build quality and look of these hoses. They will look spectacular on my TR250 project when I get around to finishing her hopefully this fall or spring of next year.

New & LED Brake Light Bulbs

Art Fournier

A few months ago I replaced the sealed beam headlight bulbs in my TR8 with LEDs. Now I could see better, but could I be seen? When you drive a 40-year-old small car, you definitely want to be seen. My TR8 doesn’t have a third brake light, so I want it to have the brightest brake lights possible. With that in mind, I bought a pair of red LED brake light bulbs.

The bulbs are name brand (Philips) and, according to the

supplier, were the correct brake light bulbs for my 1980 TR8. The bulbs have 18 LEDs arranged in three groups of six around the perimeter of the bulb. I installed one and waited until dark to test it. To my surprise it wasn’t as bright as the old-fashioned 1156 incandescent bulb it replaced. Further, the light pattern was such that the brake light lens wasn’t fully illuminated. I attribute this to the arrangement of the LEDs on the bulb.

Dissatisfied, I ordered a second set of bulbs, this time a pair

of Brightstar bulbs from Amazon. These bulbs each have 66 LEDs arranged around the perimeter and top of the bulb. This time, the test results were much more satisfying. The Brightstar bulbs were definitely brighter than either the incandescent or Philips bulbs and the lens was fully illuminated.

Incandescent bulbs are very inexpensive; LED bulbs not so

much so. Both the Philips and Brightstar bulbs were $16.99 for a pair. However, to me, the improved visibility justifies the extra cost. The bottom line, though, is not all LEDs are created equal, so shop around.

Simeone Museum Visit January 25th

There hasn’t been much snow so far this winter in the Wash-ington area, but there certainly has been a lot of rain. And proba-bly the rainiest day was January 25th when CTR stalwarts ven-tured north to Philadelphia to join members of Delaware Valley Triumphs for the annual Best of Britain show at the Simeone Foundation Museum featuring British cars of Le Mans. It rained hard enough that only a few CTR members made the trip north and, unfortunately, hard enough that the planned Demo Day drive of British classics was cancelled. However, the Aston Martin DBR1 was fired up inside the museum. Rather a bit rorty to say the least!

After the museum visit, the four of us from CTR joined

members of Delaware Valley Triumphs for a traditional lunch of Philly cheesesteak sandwiches at Chickie’s and Pete’s. Thanks to Dave Hutchison and the DVT members who hosted us on our annual visit to Philadelphia and the Simeone Museum.

Charles Runyan and displayed for years at The Roadster Factory. The Best of Britain show may have been a final opportunity to see one of these TRS cars. Both were purchased from the Runyan estate by a

West Coast buyer and will be heading that way for restoration of their Sabrina engines.

24 Hours of Lemons Sonoma 2019

Mike Roe

The Standard Page 16 February 2020

The “Jet Lag Racing” Lemons group got together once again north of San Francisco this past December for “Arse-Freeze Pa-looza” at Sonoma Raceway. We once again trotted out our 1976 TR7 FHC, modified to run a Rover 4.5-liter V8. The forecast was for rain the entire weekend, and this held true for most of the race. Doug Jensen and I were joined by Roland Hahn and Ann Moran, and Jesse Jordan (a pilot friend of Doug’s) finally got to race after paying for the car for the last 2 years (!). Ann and Ro-land had pulled the car to the track from Salt Lake City in Doug’s nifty new trailer, while Doug, Jesse and I flew in to SFO and made our way to the track Friday.

To be fair to Jesse, the group let him kick off the racing on Saturday morning. The wet conditions made for VERY slow lap times, as our 2+ year-old tires provided about as much grip as an omelet on a Teflon skillet. Everyone except Roland got a chance to run on Saturday and for the most part we stayed out of trouble (except for a couple of spins). The lack of grip meant we were basically coasting around the track so it was very easy on the car and nothing broke.

On Sunday we put Roland into the car first, as he did not

have chance to run on Saturday. The weather started out wet again, but the rain ended about 10 a.m. and, as the track started to dry out, Roland’s times got better. After letting him have a nice long two hour run it was supposed to be Jesse’s turn, but he asked if I could go first to give him a drier track later. I obligingly agreed and hopped in for my turn. The track was nearly dry by this time and my times were down in the low 2:20s (after running 3:10 in the wet). Things were going great until I was on the front stretch running three abreast with an Alfa Romeo convertible and an E-body BMW to my right. We were running about 70 mph and accelerating through the long sweeping left (thus putting me on the inside), and I was closing fast on the Alfa. Just about the

time I thought to myself “I sure hope the Alfa doesn’t try to hit the apex” he (the Alfa) veered left. I hit him squarely in the driv-er’s door just far enough back for him to pivot across the front of my car and spin backwards off the left front of our car and along the wall. I didn’t lift, of course (this is Lemons racing) and since the car seemed to be running fine (and gauges were ok), I contin-ued on. I exited at the end of the lap and self-reported to the pen-alty box just ahead of the Alfa (he didn’t need a tow), where we were given a quick lesson on racing line and checking your mir-rors, then allowed to continue racing.

The remainder of my stint passed without incident (though I was careful not to try to pass on the inside again) and I returned to our paddock about 45 minutes later for Jesse’s turn. Doug and I serviced the car and got Jesse strapped in (Ann and Roland were working timing for the race) and sent him out on the track. We hadn’t even gotten to the press box when we saw our car on the end of a tow strap behind a safety truck (never a good sign). Jesse had been going along and suddenly the engine just quit. We tried to fire the engine back in the paddock and the sounds emanating from the engine were so bad folks came from two paddocks over to ask “what the #$!? was that”? Since it was close to 2 p.m. we decided not to attempt an engine swap, as we would be unlikely to finish before racing ended at 4:45. Oil was leaking from a split in the pan (never a good sign), so we jacked the car up to drain the oil and keep it from leaking in Doug’s nice new trailer. As I loosened the drain plug, water, not oil, came from the drain plug (never a good sign). After a good long while this was followed by what oil remained in the engine. Best guess is a connecting rod let loose and damaged the water jacket and cracked the oil pan, only to be confirmed by the pending tear-down. It’s very likely we’ll be pulling another Rover mill from the Salt Lake Pull-n-Pay; maybe we can find a 4.9!

A Collection of Triumph Oddities

Stephen Oertwig

The Standard Page 17 February 2020

Standard-Triumph produced an eclectic line of cars that suit-ed every taste. There were sports cars and cars for the common person and even vans for the commercial driver. Having such a variety of cars may have been part of Triumph’s demise — it was trying to please everyone.

Most of the cars in the Capital Triumph Register stable are of

the TR series: TR3, TR4, TR250, TR6, TR7, and TR8. There is a collection of Herald-based cars such as Spitfires and GT6s. And there are a few of the oddities such as saloons.

I have one of the strangest Triumph collections among CTR

members, if not most of Vintage Triumph Register members. There are a few VTR members who have more offbeat collec-tions.

I joined CTR in 2004 with a GT6. Then a 2000 Mark II

showed up on the CTR scene after it was restored. These were in addition to a Sports 6 (Vitesse) that is in storage on the farm.

The garage quickly was filled by a Herald convertible in many pieces purchased from Pete Philips. A New Zealand pro-duced 2000 Mark II was later purchased from Matt Schipani. That wasn’t enough 2000s as I bought a 2000 Mark I in Freder-ick, Maryland, and hauled it to the farm in Missouri. It later was joined by another 2000 Mark purchased in Indianapolis in 2007 that took 10 years to take to the farm.

CTR member Bill Goodwin could have rivaled me in Tri-

umph oddities. Bill had three Heralds in Maryland and unknown Triumphs in England. After Bill died, I purchased the Herald Estate that everyone is most familiar with.

There are seven Triumphs in the Oertwig collection. There is room for one more: a Triumph 2000 Estate. I am lucky to have a wife who says, “Buy the car.”

Gibson Auction of TR4/4A Cars and Associated Parts

Doug Dallhoff

Gibson Auction Service of Orange County, Virginia, has been proudly serving Virginia for the past 30 years. They have a vast knowledge and experience in selling real estate, farm equip-ment, machine shop equipment, automobiles, Antiques, furniture, glassware, coins and collectibles. However, this was their first ever auction of British cars and related car parts. Like many of you, I first heard about this auction on Facebook and became curious so I started looking into it. They were auctioning off two TR4As and three TR4s in various declining condition along with an assortment of new and used TR4 and TR4A parts.

The auction ran from Jan 17th through Feb 3rd with a preview

day on Jan 24th. More out of curiosity than anything else, Marie and I drove down to Gibson Auction on the 24th to see if there was anything I could use in my TR250 restoration project. They had the five cars on display outside under cover and approxi-mately 30 lots of various TR4 and TR4A parts displayed on ta-bles and in boxes in the warehouse. Many of the parts were new, in their original packing with The Roadster Factory or Moss la-bels still affixed to them. There were some used parts like a radi-ator, wiper motor, engine, etc. that were also available. In talking to Gail Gibson, marketing and communications person for Gib-son Auction, she mentioned that the owner of these cars and as-sorted parts was a Triumph enthusiast who had passed away awhile back and his widow was now in an assisted living facili-ty.

None of the cars were in any sort of working condition but

the two nicer cars at least had titles, and they were attempting to obtain titles on at least one of the other cars. It was obvious that none of these cars had been touched or cared for in many years. The three nicer cars would all need some level of restora-tion and the two cars in worst condition could at best be used only as parts cars.

I wasn’t interested in any of the cars as I already have my

hands full with an ongoing restoration and I just don’t have the space or desire for another project at this time, but I was interest-ed in some of the parts that were being auctioned. So, I registered online with Gibson Auction and placed some bids. I used the maximum bid feature which allowed me to enter my maximum bid and have the computer bid on my behalf. That way my bid would rise by the specified increment only as others competitive-ly bid. If my maximum was reached and I was outbid, the auc-tion house would notify me by email giving me the opportunity to raise my maximum bid if I desired. I was successful in some if my bids and bowed out of others as the bidding got higher than I was willing to spend. In most of these cases I was only interested in a small portion of the bundled parts as many were TR4/4A specific and not applicable for a TR250.

For the right buyer, there were many really good deals to be had. As the auction came to an end the three nicer cars on dis-play closed as follows: Blue/white ‘66 TR4A w/wire wheels and no bumpers; last driven in 2003 - $5500 BRG ‘67 TR4A w/wire wheels; not running - $6750 BRG ‘61 TR4 not running and locked up with some rust issues -$1650 The remaining two very rough ‘65 TR4A and ‘61 TR4 went for $200 and $330 respectively

Some other noteworthy deals were a box full of miscellane-ous gauges for $110; TR4 new Robbins convertible top, capping and possibly tonneau cover for $330; TR4 new leather seat co-vers $430; new carpet set, underfelt jute kit and rubber floor mats $330; two used TR4 grilles and new TR4 crash pad set $200; used TR4 carbs, intake manifold and fuel pump $20; and a TR4 used engine (possibly frozen) and engine stand $120. I personal-ly came away with new tripod headlights with bulbs for $55; new battery box for $15; and a new transmission tunnel for $70. While picking these items up on Feb 4th I was surprised to see one of my son’s old college roommates there. He was picking up the BRG 1967 TR4A he purchased through this auction along with a friend of his. Together they plan to restore this car. I also met the gentleman who purchased the silver 1965 TR4A parts car. He owns a TR3 and purchased this car primarily for the syn-chronized transmission.

Overall it was a very interesting experience but also a little

sad to see these once cherished items go for, in many cases, just pennies on the dollar. If nothing else it gave me increased incen-tive to finish my TR250 restoration project and put the many boxes of valuable Triumph parts I have stored throughout the house, garage and storage shed to good use.

CTR NIGHT - JANUARY 31 The Washington Auto Show is back to it’s regular end of

Every year, CTR plans a visit to the Washington Auto Show on the final Friday of the show. Some arrive early and spend the day kicking tires and slamming doors; however, we all get to-gether at 6:00 p.m. to swap stories and opinions at the High Ve-locity Sports Bar across the street from the Washington Conven-tion Center. This year’s show featured a larger display of classic cars and a pre-production version of the new C8 mid-engine Cor-vette. Some marques, such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Mini, and Porsche, were missing from this year’s show. Hopefully, that isn’t indicative of a long-term trend.
