GRANT FUNEDED RESEARCH EXPERIENCE SAMSHA Title: Substance Abuse, Prevention, Intervention, Referral and Education (SPIRE) Amount: $300,000 x 3 If funded, SPIRE will screen 7th – 12th graders in Bowling Green City and Warren county Schools for possible substance use issues. Screenings will determine if no risk, low risk, or moderate high risk for substance abuse disorders. Education and referral will be based on leve of risk. University of Louisville National Institute of Health (NIH) Sub award Grant (16-0237B) Subcontract Western Kentucky University; July 2016 - Present Title: Dissemination of Computer-Assisted Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Depression in Primary Care Amount: $10,279 x 3 years ($30,825)

Dr. Cappiccie is acting in the role of Research Manager. This role will include 8 hour of time per week with the following duties: building network/connections with referral sources at UofL/TJ Sampson Family Medicine Clinic research site, assisting with work flow decisions on rural dissemination site, explaining informed consent to referred patients, obtaining informed consent documents, random assignment of patients to protocol, assisting patients in starting and completing panel of rapid assessment inventories, documentation of patient research, storage and security of research in rural dissemination site, maintaining tablets that will be used for access to online portion of research, weekly interdisciplinary team phone conferences, follow up with patients as needed, transition to care coordinator of the research team, preparation of research articles and dissemination of articles.

Western Kentucky University and Meharry Medical School Fall 16 – Spring 2018 Investigators: Sullivan, Cappiccie, Desrosiers, Harper, Long, Smith Title: Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) Team of social work and nursing faculty at WKU are working with Meharry Medical school to train social work and nursing bachelors and masters students in best practices for screening client populations for substance abuse issues. Part of the screening is then referral to appropriate treatment as needed. This work has included writing curriculum, designing assignments, assessing student outcomes and disseminating findings via papers and presentations. Title: Raising Law Enforcement Officer Awareness of Traumatic Brain Injury Signs: A Training Module Amount: $8000 This mixed-methods research project initiated a proactive response to the need for officer training in TBI by developing a cross-disciplinary team of professionals with expertise in TBI, social/behavioral science, law enforcement, and military veteran affairs. The team of experts collaborated to conduct a curriculum needs assessment to determine factors to be considered in creation of a training curriculum. The needs assessment targeted participants who were providers of services to TBI clients, such as military/veteran’s services, community mental health centers, private practitioners, law enforcement agencies, medical professionals, and therapeutic organizations. From the data gathered through the needs assessment, content analysis determined themes to be included in creation of the training curriculum. Western Kentucky University, CHHS 1/2012 CHHS Research Award Investigators: Cappiccie, A., Wanjiku, M., & Mengo, C. Title: Kenya’s Life Lessons through Lived Experience of Rural Caregivers Amount: $3000 The PI was awarded a grant by CHHS to complete qualitative research in rural Kenya with familial caregivers raising orphaned family members. University of Louisville Recruitment of social work students and professionals on HRSA Grant 8/04-8/06 The overall goal of this $600,000 HRSA Training Grant was to assist older individuals to maintain in their homes for longer periods of time. As a doctoral student at the time, Dr. Cappiccie’s role included coordinated recruitment of Social Work students and professionals for the grant’s training curriculum. CURRENT GRANT APPLICATIONS SUBMITTED SAMSHA Grant Amount Requested: $300,00 x 3 years Subsstance Abuse, Prevention, Intervention, Referral and Education (SPIRE) for 7th – 12th graders would screen for substance abuse issues in the Bowling Green City and Warren County School System. Using the SBIRT model, SPIRE would determine if students were not at risk, at low risk, moderate risk and or high risk for substance use disorders. Appropriate referral and intervention based on level of need would be provided. Western Kentucky University, Sisterhood Grant Amount Requested: $12,000 This grant application targets the connection between freshman students and community involvement through volunteering for Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Central Kentucky. If funded, this grant anticipates that connection to the community will increase retention of

Junior Women’s League, Community Improvement Project Amount Requested: $3000 This grant application targets community funding to help Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Central Kentucky to purchase items needed for a national wide BBBS branding relaunch. The new focus is on the organization behind the “defenders of potential” for children in the community. Items purchases with grant monies would include brochures, business cards, signage for the office, uniform shirts of staff, letterhead, envelopes.
